Anybody got the Kaminari hood?

I got this hood and it seems pretty sturdy. Just wondering if anybody bothered with hood pins.
I don't really like the way hood pins look, so I wasn't planning on using them. Plus it's such a nice looking hood I can't take drill to it :)
Oh yeah another question. I haven't put it on yet cuz I'm painting the car first but is that reverse scoop designed for the radiator heat to blow over the car? If so that's pretty phat.

I hope you have a front mounted intercooler, because you will have heatsoak like none-other if you have a top mount. The hood I'm pretty sure does not need hood pins, I've heard really good thing about the hood.
| N'CTRL | 01-19-2004 08:12 PM |
If you're not gonna put the hood pins on then just get the fibreglass version. It's a little more on the heavy side so it should be more sturdy.
Just a note, the stock hood is better then most, if not all carbon fibre hoods out there. Other then looks in some people's opinions, a carbon fibre hood really has no benefits. Yes, it will save a few pounds, 5lbs. max and I've heard of a few cf versions that are actually heavier then stock. The stock hood, being aluminum alloy, spreads the heat out much better. If you're worried about the aero properties, just get a reverse scoop.
Mike~~

I'd like to know this too because mine is on its way. I wasn't sure either about the hood pins.

Yeah I'm switching to FMIC, my intercooler came today actually.
I wanna hear from people with the hood, and if they used hood pins. From my impression just from holding the hood and trying to bend it, I think it will be OK without them.

i dont have one but I have seen one. it is incredible. very nicely done, good quality. it was on a black WRX, with hood pins. looked nice.

Didnt you pay attention in Physics class?

The reverse scoop on the hood, actually draws air under the hood. By the laws of physics where the windshield meets the hood, since the windshields comes up at an angle it draws the air down under the hood there at that vertex. the same is true for a reverse hood scoop, its like a mini vertex where the wind is drawn into a low preassure spot, here acting as a reverse scoop. Wind dynamics over a car is high preassure, anytime you create a low preassure spot next to a high preassure, the air will try to equalize and draw into the low preassure spot!

Yeah dude I paid attention. That doesn't mean it needs hood pins though.
azimiut, yeah dude I was blown away when I opened the package up. It is way nicer than any other CF hoods I've seen on friends' cars.

You're right, but there are many other factors. For example the air that runs through the grill, over the engine and out the reverse scoop may be (probably IMO) enough to equalize the pressure.
And don't be condesending, not everyone is fluent in aerodynamics.

Geeze, Try to help someone out and, they call me condesending.
Yes, you you are right, there is some flow thru the front grill that may equalize the preassure, but i dont know if its enough to stop a suction.
I was somewhat joking, not completly serious, about the phsysics thing.
relax!!!

it was nice but the car was nicer. it was a wrx with RA engine running 21lbs boost it put down 370whp. not bad. im glad my car went first or it would have made my car look really sad. i only put 255whp down.

I know what you mean about "tone" over the net. It is easy to misunderstand, ones tone of intent. Sorry for the confusion.
Can I see any pics of your car, i have a silver wrx too, I noticed you have carbon fiber. any pics please?

I actually don't have a carbon fiber hood. My carbon fiber claim to fame is a partially painted carbon fiber lip that I don't think anyone else has done... shown here:

I also have cf sidemarkers and sti S202 replica wing. I would get a kaminari hood and FMIC, but I don't want to spend any more money on the car.

what kind of grille is that?

I have the fiberglass version w/ no hood pins. They are not needed. I also got some windshield washer nozzles off of a totaled 1980 something 280Z and mounted them under the hood so I wouldn't have the drill into the hood.
BTW- I'm parting out my car so If anyone is interested in a trade for their stock MBP hood. Hit me up.

I have the carbon fiber one. Have read the Kaminari site that it is not needed and have checked with several sites too. I have gone on several road trips and have gone up to speeds higher than 130 miles and my hood has still held firm and nice, hardly see any wobble at all. Really an amazing hood.

I went a little overboard and left the stock horns in, too. Make sure you use the included relay, so the horns can draw as much juice as they need...

Has anyone with the Reverse Scoop hood had problems with rain or water from washing the car. I'm super close to buying this hood along with a trunk and just want to make sure that i'm not going to have problems with it in the future. Thanks in advance.

Hood pins... hmmm... I've been thinking of getting some for mine, because at 80mph+ there is visible flapping/vibration. I'm thinking of a way to use internal hood pins, something that would hold down the corners, yet not require drilling into the hood.
I've had mine for over seven months now. Lots of rain, some snow, some sleet, and no problems...
JMP781 - we must live within a few miles of each other. Let me know if you want to have a look...

sorry to keep this thread going off-topic, but there is more flow than I think most people are giving credit for. Don't forget that the grill is one of the primary passages for air to flow through the radiator. Typically this air has to find its way out from under the car. Creating a reverse scoop should cause a suction effect that would increase the efficiency of the air passing through the front grill. Why? The air running over the hood has already been deflected and will be deflected even more away from the car (creating eddies and variances in the pressure zones). This lower area of pressure would be quickly filled by air entering the front grill and "looking" for a lower pressure area. This would be very easy to explain with a diagram, but, I'm too lazy for that! ;)
EDIT: please correct me if i'm wrong... I haven't gotten this detailed in any physics in a number of years.
