Richard Burns hospitalized. part 1

firedog25 11-03-2003 10:19 AM

Richard Burns hospitalized.
As much as I didn't want him to win the Driver's Championship, I didn't want him to lose this way.

Does anyone know anything about this?
KC 11-03-2003 10:30 AM

Richard Burnss 2003 World Rally Championship bid is over. The 2001 World Champion, who is fourth in the points table, has been transferred to Cardiff for tests after being taken to hospital in Newport feeling faint yesterday.

Burns has been forbidden on medical grounds to drive his works 206 as scheduled. The plan is to substitute him with Belgian driver Freddy Loix, who is practising the route already.

Illness forces Burns out of Rally GB
Former champion loses title chance on home ground

After leading the championship for much of the season, Burns has missed out

Burns' Peugeot career is over without a single rally win for the team

Britain's World Rally Championship contender Richards Burns is out of this weekend's season finale in Wales after being hospitalised on the eve of the event.

Burns spent Sunday night in Newport hospital in South Wales after fainting at around 17:30 while travelling from London to Cardiff. This forced him to miss the beginning of the recce for Wales Rally GB today (Monday) so he will not be allowed to enter the event on safety grounds.

Doctors will give an update later today on their diagnosis and the seriousness of his state of health.

His co-driver Robert Reid said: "The doctors have basically told Richard not to do the rally. He's having more tests done today, but he's in good form considering the circumstances. Obviously he's hugely disappointed about the whole thing. I thought this year would have a sting in the tail, but I wasn't quite prepared for this."

Both Burns and Reid fell ill on the final day of Rally Catalunya last month, but it is not known whether this is related to Richard's hospitalisation.

Burns lies five points behind joint championship leaders Sebastien Loeb and Carlos Sainz going into this weekend's Wales Rally GB WRC finale. Only Subaru's Petter Solberg, who Burns will join as team-mate next year, can now overhaul the Citroen duo.

Peugeot Sport has claimed force majeure due to Burns' illness, and requested that its 2004 signings Freddy Loix and Sven Smeets be allowed to drive his car in Wales this weekend.

I would prefer that RB not be WRC Champion without having won a single event, but I'd also rather he not miss out on his last chance. It's just a bad break. Hopefully he'll be ready to go knackers-out next year. for "us".
M8 11-03-2003 10:48 AM

Yeah this is a bummer... No McRae next year and Burnsey has to miss out on a shot at the championship over something like this. I have a feeling that he will drive well for subaru next season: with peugot he was making the most of a car he was never happy with and was still the most consistant driver on the circuit this year.

Well, at any rate...

 Best wishes to Richard and Robert and speedy recovery!

from Burns' PR (yep... i'm a fan club member)
BURNS LATEST
We can confirm that Richard Burns was taken ill last night and is currently in hospital. His condition is not serious however doctors do want to carry out further tests. On the advice of doctors, Richard will not be taking part in this weekend's Rally Great Britain.

The entire Peugeot Sport Team expresses its solidarity and wishes Richard a prompt recovery.

Due to this case of force majeure, Peugeot Sport has asked FIA, on the basis of article 5.1.4 of the General Prescriptions and Article 2.3 of the Regulations of the World Rally Championship, to authorize the crew Freddy Loix Sven Smeets to replace the crew Richard Burns Robert Reid.
Sad to see him out of the hunt for the WDC like this... :( I would have loved to see a nice squabble between the guys still in the thick of it at the final round.

Get well quickly Richard!

I'm thinking there will still be a hell of a scrap. There's a nice little dogpile at the top of the standings. I'll be pleased no matter if it's...

Petter - "Our dog in the fight", and just a great competitior - to see him look so excited over a 2nd place in Finland summed it up for me.

Sainz - The Grey Panther, a very classy, very  Old-School driver, already twice a champion, and proof that there's life after 40.

Loeb - You just know he's going to be champ at some point, so might as well get it out of the way. He's one of those who's always a threat, and his pace makes everyone else work harder.

Two young pups up against the (relatively) grizzled veteran, one round to go, on an unpredictable, mixed-surface rally - it's PERFECT!

WOW...sorry to hear about RB. :( Get well soon Richard. :)
I get the RB newsletters but I haven't seen this one.

Anyhoo...I like Petter alot but I'm hoping El Matador pulls it off. Carlos is a living legend in the rally community and it'd be great to see this happen.

Good luck to all WRC drivers this weekend. :D

Ole, El Matador!
What a sucky way for RB to end a remarkably consistent season. Unlike McRe, RB's career is not done by any means. Iit's incredibly exciting to imagine him back on the tages, spanking bright blue cars next season....

So now what for Raly GB and the driver's championship? Being (ahem) somewhat north of the Big 4 0 myself, I have to be rooting for Sainz. That, and the fact that a formative stage of my rally experience was a truly memorable ride in an ex-Sainz recce car (Toyota ST185), he's the logical and emotional choice. Not so long ago, Sainz lost the World Championship within sight of the last control on the very last stage of Rally GB...there's a sad photo of Sainz climbing out of the smoking Toyota (blown engine) as codriver Luis Moya gives the car a despairing kick in the fender.

Of course Petter and Loeb are not exactly going to roll over and submit!

So whoever wins will be deserving. It's just that Sainz deserves it more for his perseverance and courage.

Cheers,

Dave G

...as codriver Luis Moya gives the car a despairing kick in the fender....

NOT ONLY THAT...
but Luis threw his helmet through the rear window of the car IIRC... it'd be nice to see El Matador take out some revenge on rally GB....

but then again.. i bleed True Blue...
so... GO PETTER

My logical choice is McRae! After all it is his home rally :)
Plus, with him not having a drive next year it would hi-lite the irony of such a talented driver being left unemployed.
AndyRoo 11-03-2003 04:09 PM

wow, hope he's alright. not a good way to lose the championship.

any ideas on what the illness could be?
RA29 11-03-2003 05:59 PM

When the going gets tough . . .
johnfelstead 11-03-2003 06:24 PM

What a rediculous thing to say RA29.

Thankfully Richard wasnt alone in the car. Marko Martin was with him and steered the car to a halt when Richard collapsed, otherwise we could be reading a far more sombre thread now.
AndyRoo 11-03-2003 07:18 PM

whoa he was driving when it happened?
Jfrankon 11-03-2003 07:21 PM

one word for GB:

Makinen!:)
cvalle-sd 11-03-2003 07:27 PM

I think Petter's got the advantage, honestly. He won there most recently, the Subie's better on loose surfaces than the Xsara, and Loeb's not as strong in the gravel.

Go Petter:disco:
RichQY 11-03-2003 07:59 PM

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww

i really want to see Burnsie and Petter dual it out in GB..

best wishes for him

yes, he was driving down the M4 motorway from London to Cardif, most likely doing 80MPH.

i think Carlos Sainz will be 2003 World Rally Champ !

... hmm & Burns should drive ... maybe Skoda Fabia becouse of similar unreliability ..

Poor RB, cut the guy a break!
Jeez, what a horrid photo. It's awful what a picture taken out of context will do...or can be made to appear to do.

Poor RB (well, given his salary that's not entirely true) is getting slagged all over the place. The travel schedule these WRC crews have to deal with would make any one of us faint, too! Shoot, we're lucky Markko Martin was there to grab the wheel when Burns fainted on the highway. Markko has been in enough wrecks for one season!

Let Burns rest in peace, get well soon (and start testing his new Impreza WRC 05) and how's about we root for the contenders at Rally GB, in roughly the following order:

Sainz the lionhearted: bravest of the brave, and hardest of the hard-asses

Petter the Hollywood hero and Great Hope for the Scooby Faithful

Loeb the cold-eyed competitor

McRae the local favorite and lame duck

Hope for a safe event, no horrific wrecks or injuries, may the best crew win.

Cheers,

Dave G

Horrific wrecks are fine, just no injuries. I don't want to lose anymore driver's in my favorite motorsport.
Idjiit 11-04-2003 03:48 PM

Richard has been released from Hospital while they await tests...
Kostamojen 11-05-2003 03:40 AM

I havent seen anything about the cause yet... If he just suddenly went unconcious this could be something serious.
Idjiit 11-05-2003 09:06 AM

Unfortunately Burnsie's site doesn't reveal much more...
Jaxx 11-05-2003 04:59 PM

guess the pug guys arn't going to miss him
they gave his GB ride to Freddy Loix ???
RB5 Clone 11-05-2003 05:08 PM

Loix the madman
Don't be badmouthing Freddy Loix. He's the real deal.

Loix was the koo-koo guy who drove Rally Sweden last year with a busted foot. Despite a cast on his leg he landed in the top 10 and threatened to win the whole dang shebang.

This guy is scary fast. Heck, ALL of the WRC pilotes are scary fast.

and the cause....

i just hope they're false :(

damn. :(

nothing official yet. just rumors at the mo....
RB5 Clone 11-05-2003 07:51 PM

burnsie mystery, partially explained?
Jamie, as a rally gonzo yourself you know a bit of what RB is up against.

Angst about "can I hack this rally, can I beat ANY of these amazing drivers and codrivers?"

Confidence in that hell yes you can.

Total faith in the fearful fearless codriver who tells you that at 21.94 kilometers, there's a 90-degree Left lurking 50 meters over that blind crest coming at you in the rain on some inky dark slippy forest road at 97 mph.

Dread of what it means to spank at the edge of physical reality. Can you REALLY hit the brakes hard enough to make the turn noted above?

Determination to just strap in and go for it all, because your crew is so frikken awesome and goes to such inhuman lengths to make sure your car is all it can possibly be.

Being scared ****less knowing what you have just signed up to do.

Not caring because rallying is what you live for.

Caring because you so want to satisfy the fans who stand for hours out in the rain and sleet and dust and heat to cheer you on.

Not being able to do it because you have spent 200 days on the road running dozens of WRC rallies all over the world this year, and by keeping up the pace you now you feel like a dead porcupine and you just fainted while driving a rental car on the motorway.

Whatever RB is being paid to drive in WRC, it's barely enough for him to put so much on the line. We should be reassured that he will be back next year, making his amazing Subaru do amazing things.

Meanwhile, go Petter, Go CARLOS! Rally GB is all yours. Or not...

cheers.

Dave G
Been there a bit meself....
