WRX sideskirts on a RS/OBS writeup

Ok so I know there are a bunch of threads about this, but no write up I could find so far. So here we go.
The parts you will need are:

Flat head & philipshead screwdriver
Drill and 5/19ths bit
Double sided tape (not necessarily the good kind)
Pliers, needle-nose or other
--------------------------------------
Two WRX sideskirts
12 side fasteners
12 under-side fasteners
2 end caps
4 end cap plastic pop-rivets
2 front end plastic pop-rivets
To start, I held up the side skirts to get an idea as to how they would fit. Originally, I was going to go w/ the double-sided tape, but upon further attempts, decided to drill.
First, look under your car along the edge where the bottom pop rivets will be going. There should be 6 rubber "hole filler" plugs under your paint. Use a screwdriver to pop those suckers up. They're a pain to get off, once you've got a hold of the top, stick the screwdriver in toward the middle as to release the little holder pieces. Here's a pic w/ ONE of the bottom holders in.

Next, wipe down your existing "skirts" so their nice and clean (and dry), and attach the skirt w/ one of your bottom pop rivets. Take your double sided tape, and stick a piece to each attachment piece on the inside of the skirt (the part that the side fastener attaches to). Also, make sure the tape sticks JUST enough to the skirt to stay, this wont be permanent. Now, push the skirt up onto the body like it would be when its fully mounted. The goal here is to get it right where you need it, and pull it away, leaving the double sided tape on the car.

Supposing all the pieces of tape stuck to the car, you should be able to see the little 'U' shaped marks to that the fasteners clip into. Use these as your drilling template. Use your best judgment, and drill (w/ a little leway on either side) into the body right in the middle of the 'U' shape on the tape. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about.

You can see where the left over dirt on the sideskirt came in handy in leaving a "template" for me to drill. If your skirts are new (or not dirty  ) use a bit of charcoal or something of the sort, it makes life a lot easier.
Now, double check all your 'templates' look like they're where the should be, more or less along the line of the rough debris guard paint that's on there. Sink or swim here folks... drill into the body w/ your bit, and remove the excess tape. Attach all of the underside pop-rivets, and clip in the side fasteners. They should pop into your drilled holes w/ a little shimy-ing side to side. Attach the end caps, pop on the front pop rivet, and voila! Snug as a bug in a rug... or something.
As a side note, I didnt end up ordering and using the end caps, because the dealer didnt have them in stock, they are more cosmetic than anything, but should definately be used. I'm going back to get mine here soon... any day now... :D .
Hope this helped. It's my first write up, but I wanted to put an end to all of the "how do I attach my XX sideskirts to my XX?" threads. This was done on an 04 OBS w/ 04 WRX skirts, I can't imagine it would change much from year to year. Please, pardon the ****ty phone pics ;)

doh, that subject title came out a bit retarded, oh well.

how does that end cap go on there? Do you have to drill holes for that too? I did a test fit of mine today and couldnt figure out how to put it on.
| silver-RS | 04-03-2007 10:04 PM |
^^^ the end cap is quite confusing...it took me a while to figure out how it works with the skirts...it's very difficult to tell you in words or even picture
as of how it works...
as of how it works...

Yup, you have to drill to put on the end caps... then use the little pop rivets that Subie loves to hold them on!

I've never seen a 5/19ths drill bit.

Can you post some clearer pics of them on the car? Great write up by the way I am doing this next weekend.

Can you post a pic of how that end cap is actually on there?
| RSTimpreza | 04-04-2007 06:20 PM |
^^^ Yes pls

I just put sideskirts on today. I ended up not putting the endcap on until the skirts were installed, and I did not drill a hole for the endcap, just snapped it into place - you'd have to pull pretty hard to get it off, so I think it'll be ok without any of the plastic clips.
I'll see if I can get a picture of the endcap tomorrow.

yea, I didnt end up using the end caps because the dealer had to order them, so I can't post pics quite yet. I would think you'll have to drill.

ya come to think of it, it's kind of a odd bit

I'm thinking this should work for a TR. I'm also interested in seeing these end caps.

Here are the pictures of the way I installed the endcap (no drilling, just popped into place). Click the image for a really big view:

Everything seems to be correct in installing it this way, and like I said it is secure enough that it can't come out unless you really pull on it to unclip it from the wheel well.
I figured out where to drill holes for the side skirt clips by putting some masking tape along the body and putting some heavy grease on the standoffs for the clips. I then pushed the skirt up into place and banged it against the body to leave an imprint of the grease on the masking tape. I drilled the holes according to this and they came out perfect.
Also instead of a plastic pop rivet for the front of the skirt, I pushed a plastic drywall screw socket into the hole in the fender and used a stainless steel wood screw to hold it all together. I use the same thing for my mudflaps in the winter.
Part numbers:
Left Endcap: 96054FE010
Right Endcap: 96054FE000
Bottom Clips: 909140020

i tried today, how did you manage to snap it into place. I managed to somewhat get it on but it is not secure though.

Finally some pictures of end caps! I have skirts and the clips to put under the skirts but no end caps. Gonna order them from subarugenuineparts. Will it look silly without the end caps for a couple days? Will the skirt flop around at the end without them?
| Flaps | 04-05-2007 08:19 PM |
I think the endcaps get held in place somewhat by the skirt, it takes a fair bit of pressure, but the clip on the back side of the cap should pop over the lip in the wheel well and should fit pretty sung.
The cap really doesn't do anything but cover up a gap between the skirt and the wheel well. The skirt should be really solid as there's a clip in the side and the bottom right near the rear end of the skirt. You probably wouldn't notice the endcap not being there, so I wouldn't worry about it if it's only going to be a few days.

you want to drill holes, i want to fill mine. i like my car without sideskirts, that is until i can find the EGR skirts for sale.

Are you guys covering up the clips that are under the skirt with something? it just seems a little open, not much but enough for some stuff like water or liquid mud to get between the skirt and the car underbody (holes under skirt are square and the face of the clips are circle).
Also, can you install the end covers after all of the other skirt clips are in place, without having to remove the back clips.

are you talking about the underside of the skirts? those square holes w/ the circular clips are what you want, note pic #2, of the underside.

We were wondering how to prevent crap (sand, water, etc) from entering through here. Even though the entrance to the sideskirt is little, even with the clips on, things can get through and over time a bunch of junk builds up. i already hear sand grains moving through the skirts when i drive. how do you suggest we cover these up?

Probably a stupid question, but where would you get a 5/19ths bit? I looked at Home Depot and Lowes and all I see is 5/16ths.

Bump for drill bit confirmation and also if anyone can measure the holes from the top of the rocker panel to the hole and from the one end of the rocker panel to the hole.
I just got my STI sideskirts in today and wanna make sure that I am drilling the right distance for the holes.

I realize this is old but wanted to thank the OP:). After doing it this way the skirts are on like they came with the car. Drilling was scary but this method works. I did a few things different but basically the same idea.
My skirts were clean so a grease pen had to be used along with double sided tape to make the templates.
Ended up using a 11/32 drill bit after testing a few sizes.

Yeah, sorry guys for the odd drill bit size. Go with 11/32 or anything that looks close. Your local home depot guy should be able to help you find one :)
