DIY JDM orange sidemarkers

One thing I'm sure you all know is that JDM sidemarkers are awesome.
They look great, add JDM flavor to the USDM car and enhance safety and visability everytime you use your turn signals. You can even wire them to come on with your parking lights for even more visability.
What I'm not sure that everyone knows is that they used to be $40 from subydude.
But then supply and demand made that price rise, and now they're $61 dollars.
That's a lot to pay for two little lights, especially when you factor in the cost of drilling your perfectly good fenders.
Now- I came up with a solution.
Aside from the JDM amber sidemarkers, SAA in Japan sells 'frost' and 'tint' sidemarkers that replace both the corner markers and sidemarkers with clear or frosted or tinted units. they even made some colored ones.
These SAA marker packages cost a lot, probably near $115-150. I found one on ebay for $45, so that was lucky. You can't get that lucky nowadays.
The solution?
DIY JDM ORANGE SIDEMARKERS
materials-
subarugenuineparts.com clear sidemarkers for the impreza - $15 each plus shipping. part number 84401SA000
orange sharpie from micheals crafts- $1.29
this becomes a pretty bright orange, not an amber so if you want, you can spray it with some nightshades to give it a light dusting of darkness.
the result-

I cant believe people want them at all. I guess its JDM so it must look good ;). I love how VW people all hate their sidemarkers and some people go though the trouble of shaving them, because most think it loos cleaner, yet we drill holes in our fenders and add them...
Oh well I guess its a matter of personal taste and opinion, and if you like them and can get it done cheap, more power to you

Yes dude some of us try to make are cars look like something that came from the factory. All I need are your brakes/interior/drivetrain and to install my damn roof vent thats been sitting in my room for 4 months. Yes my car sucks
I know.

Handsdown that looks real good for what about 35 bucks? some reason I would still get the orange oem's.

i used a template, copied it onto some masking tape, dremeled out the fender, then kept cutting more and more to make it fit. the key is to start small.

Thats all I did. It only takes some balls and some time and you can make it look nice.

i'm sure if you made a thread in the 'private for sale classifieds' forum someone would snatch them up as long as they were a good price.

what did you use to wire up a bulb in the marker?
| pityr | 02-12-2006 12:31 AM |
what did you use to wire up a bulb in the marker?
wires and stuff :)
My markers came with a bulb holder and harness and then I tapped into the wiring for the turn signal in the headlights to make them light up.

are you serious. that is pretty clean if its really done with a sharpie. looks good with a white car.
| silverF4turbo | 02-23-2006 02:45 AM |
You can get jdm side-only ambers for a LOT less than $40 if you search around... that's all I'm gonna say since I'm still in the process of getting mine :D
Either way awesome DIY

well after a few rainstorms and a bunch of freezing days(30*) they're holding up great
but one of the areas that has the raised curve emblem on it is getting clear- i think i just didn't get it well enough the first time due to the raised areas being hard to cover well...
in all the spot that looks clear again is smaller than my pinkie's finger print, but it's still not orange like the rest of the marker, you can see in to the white and black housing.
upon reflection, if you have the extra money, OEM amber is definitely the way to go- but if you don't want to look like a civic with all the clear corners, this is a good fix.

can this be done on the 04+, i know we dont have a side marker allready like 02-03, so id prolly have to drill my body right?
| pleue | 02-23-2006 07:00 PM |
another thought you guys might want to try is to use krylon stained glass spray which comes in orange. Bonds well to plastics and such, can be found at michael's or most hobby stores. Now who can source some bulb holders for me?

02-03 don't have side markers in the JDM indicator location, only the corner marker.
you have to do the same drilling regardless of whether it's an 02 or 04 or 06.

| wrxdrftr2002 | 02-24-2006 06:14 PM |
yo how do you change the wiring around to make it look more JDM for the tail lights? i wanna do it lol
| circaisdashiat | 02-25-2006 04:09 PM |
how come some bugeye imprezas have the side markers and some dont? i searched google images for 02 impreza WRX and a bunch had them but some didnt.
| x5-992 | 03-09-2006 05:30 PM |
I wouldn't mind clear sidemarkers in my next Impreza. My Lancer had them and I put in blue bulbs which looked sweet at night.

Dont know if this has already been mentioned, but
You can also use this stuff...http://www.hlj.com/product/TAMTS-73
This is what the honda guys are using for their stock corner lenses to make them look like the more expensive JDM ones. It would probably be a little darker than using a sharpie marker
