JDM Headlights part 1

JDM Headlights

Hello All,

I am trying to determine the interest - if any, in JDM Projector headlights from the STi. I have had some inquiries at other sites.

I am planning a shipment of parts to leave Japan within 1-2 weeks, and woud like to include any additional parts, via bulk rate, to pass along some great shipping costs. I am currently also checking into the legality of these lights with the DOT to ensure they are ok to use. Assuming they are legal, I plan on providing the necessary paperwork for you in the event you are harassed by our great law enforcement.

If there is interest, could you please email me, or post here, and I would be happy to provide you with pricing.

Mods - if this is the wrong forum - I apologize, please move to the correct forum.

Thanks - Kevin

Will they have the correct beam pattern for LHD?

Is this the tri-lamp headlight setup?

Can it be available in HID for both low and high beam?

Any pictures or URLs to send us to see more on it?

GoodFinder :)

Thanks for the questions, I am checking with my partner and Subaru in Japan to check on these and will have better info as soon as I hear back.

Keep me updated. If I can pull together the scratch to do it I will.
Geek Guy 01-21-2002 09:10 AM

There are also other vendors that sell the STi projectors - [email protected], TaiChih as examples...
yuns555 01-21-2002 09:55 AM

i'd be interested! but of course it's price that's holding me back. pm me with the details:D . also, unable to email you or pm you.
Zahnster 01-21-2002 10:46 AM

I'm pretty sure the answer to DOT is no. And I've never heard of HIDs on high beams, only low beams.
Dr. Zevil 01-21-2002 11:20 AM

Always interested if the price is right.....

Ok, answers to your questions:

1) yes it is a tri-lamp setup

2) Beam pattern - unfortunately these are for RHD, so odds are the beam pattern is incorrect

3) HID is low beam only.

I am still awaiting reponse from the DOT, I will keep you all informed.

A picture is attached though for your viewing pleasure.

Damn I knew it.

If the price is right I'll still buy em.
Geek Guy 01-21-2002 08:11 PM

I am almost 100% sure that these lights aren't DOT approved. Neither are my morettes.

But if you buy 'em, you just need to learn where to get your car inspected ;)

I don't want to spread misinformation, so tell me if I'm wrong Shooter, but:

1) These will have the RHD beam pattern. However, check out http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=128469 . Imprezer cracked open the lights and removed the plate that sets the beam pattern. This could easily be moded to make what ever kind of pattern you want. I'm not saying that you go and open up your brand new JDM lights, but it is possible to fix the RHD if it is that important.

2) The HID is low beam only. However, these lights have seperate high and low beam sections. This means that it is possible to add a high beam bulb (HID or not). It would require some wiring to set this up though.

Hope this helps.

Any news yet on the lights?

interested

I am interested as long as they are non-hid and the price is reasonable.

I think most of us know what the asking price is here and about what the actual price to bring these over is as well... so....

keep us all posted.

Regarding the HID hibeams, do any cars have those because I didnt think so.
rexwagon 02-06-2002 09:17 PM

Eliminating some confusion over HIDs

From what I've seen (in Japan, when I was there a while ago and saw a WRX), the JDM lamps are a four bulb system. That means that the low and high beams are separate (unlike the U.S. WRX, which has one bulb for both). And yes, the low beam is HID. I think the high beam is normal halogen. Both the low and high beams are projector beams (compact, good appearance, good lighting, but typically more expensive).

To answer your question, 128d, I think there are vehicles that use HID for both low and high beams. Some high end European vehicles (Porsche, BMW) use them. I'm not sure of the details, but I'm looking into it.

Nearly all (if not all) vehicles that use HIDs use a dual beam system (separate low and high). This is inherently better than our poor two bulb system. And, when the low beams are HID, it's really nice.

HID high beams are probably unnecessary for regular street driving. With HID lows on, and halogen projector beam highs on, things would be pretty darned bright.

Shooter Boy, thanks for the info. Please keep us updated. I'm interested.
SammyDFG 02-07-2002 12:54 AM

dude
im willing to sacrifice the money im saving up for vishnu stage 0 if the price is right

hmmm, they come with low-beam HID?
topcover 02-07-2002 06:57 PM

I would be interested if pricing was remotely reasonable. Hint: $900 not reasonable IMO....

Sammy - just your conscience speaking... "Stay the course... save for Vishnu Stage 0!!!!! Woooo!!!! Lights don't make car go faster!!!! Woooooooo!!!" :)
SammyDFG 02-07-2002 07:54 PM

yes yes i know!

unless he selling for $600 or something

cause in the future i want those neways

so sexy!
topcover 02-07-2002 07:56 PM

  Viiiiiisssssshnuuuuuu! Zeeeeeeeroooooo... Faaaaaaster...

Okay, I'll stop. :D

Actually, I've chosen to make the JDM headlights the cherry on my sundae! Stage 1, M2 Dual Exhaust (if Shiv doesn't include one) and I'm done. Lights go last.
BlackBeastie 02-08-2002 01:00 AM

I was just reading about the Audi TT headlights. They are over $1k each. just trying to put things in perspective. The stock WRX headlights are $350 each IIRC.
Graham E Ware 02-08-2002 01:23 AM

There are two types of JDM Sti headlight...

NON-HID and HID.
They are setup for the Right hand drive Sti version of the "New Age" Impreza.
There is no need to "kill" anyone for a Set; I ask US$749 a Pair (plus postage)
for the NON-HId's and always have them in stock; the HID's are US$2200 a Pair as complete assemblies with HID ballasts. These lights fit either the Wagon or Sedan.

eric, how much is shipping to california? 749 plus???? thanks

GoodFinder 02-08-2002 08:29 AM

Eric,

Can you get LHD in HID tri-lamp assembly that would work for the 2002 USA WRX?

GoodFinder :)
Zahnster 02-08-2002 10:57 AM

I've been spreading this idea to people for a little bit of time. If you go back and look at the thread of Imprezer taking his headlights apart. I've got a theory that you can swap the plates between your left and right headlights and there you go. LHD.

I've suggested this to a couple people who have the lights but I don't think anyone has tried it. I was hoping Imprezer would respond with something on the idea, but nothing yet.
WRX Power 02-09-2002 04:55 PM

Any updates on this?
128d 02-11-2002 06:37 PM

I'm still intrested in a set.
Frederf 02-27-2002 03:29 AM

There are such things as HID for dual high and low beam. I forget what car it was, but one used a movable light blocker to keep it lowbeam, and it retracted for high beam.
KillerRex 02-27-2002 04:20 AM

Would you guys happen to know the bulb sizes for the non-HID low/high beam?
TaiChih 02-27-2002 04:36 AM

H1 low and 9005 high
i eat meat 02-27-2002 11:57 PM

frederf, are you talking about the porsche lights? with the "flip plate" to actuate the high beams, instead of a seperate bulb?
Frederf 02-28-2002 03:13 AM

Probably, I'm really into Porsche.
