Swapping v9 STi steering wheel into 04 WRX part 1

Swapping v9 STi steering wheel into 04 WRX
I know it's not a straight bolt in as the v9 have a different cruise control setup (I think). Can you retain the "old" cruise someway?

How about airbag compatability? Way around it if it's not the same?

Anything else I'm not thinking about?

Thanks in advance

Mike....I think it is a bolt in, other than the cruise......and IIRC, somebody figured out a work around for that one, too.....the ON/OFF switch gets a re-wire, I think.
The airbag MAY have different connectors, but that isn't a big deal.

....LOVE da bushinigs

I'll search around some more- I think this steering wheel would go well in my wagon :)

Best OEM Suby steering wheel ever. Does your airbag wiring clip directly into the back of the steering wheel or does it have a clip with a green spring loaded locking mechanism? I think for the CC you can just swap over the switch from your stock wheel. It might have to be mounted creatively though.

Haven't had it off. I was kind of hoping someone may have already done such a swap- guy can always hope :)

^ Thanks- that was very helpful :)

hey mike, can you take pics and whatnot of your install when you do it? i might find it helpful in the next few months. gl
BIGSKYWRX 02-23-2006 08:52 PM

got to find a wheel first :D
topend 02-24-2006 01:08 AM

wow that wheel looks nice... gotta find me one of those someday:)
Capt Crunch 02-24-2006 01:36 AM

how much smaller is the version 9 steering wheel compared to the 02 WRX one?
Handsdown 02-24-2006 02:12 AM

my 03 RS wheel is smaller in diameter than the 02 WRX but almost two inches... which made no sense to me:confused:

i'd guess this one's smaller...

I don't know why you think that, but it's not true. No Subaru steering wheel was smaller until the 04 STi and then the 05/06 WRX and STi's. You're saying that your RS wheel is an inch and a half smaller than the new STi steering wheels.

375mm vs 385mm.
BIGSKYWRX 02-24-2006 09:20 AM

^ that's correct :)

umm, i don't know where you're getting your information but i had an 02 wrx wheel IN MY CAR and when i put the rims of the wheels together, the RS wheel was smaller. i'm not wrong, and i'm not saying my 03 RS wheel is smaller than the new STI wheels, i'm saying that the new STI wheels ARE smaller than the 02 WRX wheels which has been confirmed in your anticeding post.

reading comprehension much?

So you're saying your 03 RS steering wheel was NOT 385mm? By saying the RS steering wheel is 2 inches smaller than the WRX steering whell then YES, you are saying that the RS wheel is an inch and a half smaller than an 05+ steering wheel. Reading comprehension is not > than me, a+b still = c. ;)
Handsdown 02-24-2006 12:04 PM

i haven't measured it, but it was smaller in a hold-up comparison than the 02 WRX wheel that I had.

and it wasn't my imagination, it was very much noticably smaller.
amukaoen 02-24-2006 12:04 PM

BigskyWRX did you ever complete this steering wheel install by chance?
Handsdown 02-24-2006 12:09 PM

considering he said "have to find a wheel first" less than 18 hours ago, i'd say no, he hasn't

Do you have a picture of your magic steering wheel up against the other? Even JDM STi Ver. 7 steering wheels are the same size as the momo in the middle WRX steering wheels.
BIGSKYWRX 02-24-2006 02:42 PM

From the 2002 FSM ALL Impreza's are 385 mm steering wheels. From the 2004 FSM ALL Imprezas EXCEPT the STi are 385 mm, STi 375.

If I was a betting man, I wouldn't think that in 03 Imprerza steering wheel diameters were made smaller and than made larger again 04.

If someone has a 2003 FSM by all means post up the specs :)

Thank you! I really don't know where he's getting this from.

Mike, an update on the wheel fitment?

Thinking of doing the same thing.

if anyone needs an 06 roll connecter pm me. I have one that im sitting on until someone needs it. this way you dont have to mess witht he airbag wires. they will just plug right in.
BIGSKYWRX 10-16-2006 11:19 AM

Didn't do it, but still might. Getting the cruise to work is a must for me- everything is far away in MT :) There is a good detailed thread on getting it to work, but it is far from a plug/play- pretty involved-click the link listed up aways.
elsanto 10-16-2006 01:56 PM

^ i just retained my stock CC switch.

With a little modifying it fit into the new age wheel. and its really solid.. i know its not exactly right, but nobody except for me would notice.
BIGSKYWRX 10-16-2006 07:51 PM

did you do this way?

Thanks

I'm wondering if there isn't some way of using the STi cruise control switch. Maybe re-routing the WRX wiring for the on/off switch on the dash to the steering wheel and integrating it into the harness.
BIGSKYWRX 10-29-2006 10:29 AM

I thik there would be a market if someone came up w/ a plug/play solution :)
