F1 USGP: No more Indy?

According to this story, anyhow:

[quote] Formula One executives may have penned in June 25, 2006, for another United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but Indy executives say that possibility is dead, that the USGP at Indianapolis is history.
Whether any other American promoter might pick up the F1 option is unclear. Bruton Smith has said he'd be willing to hold a Formula One race at his Sonoma, Calif., road course, if Bernie Ecclestone, F1's TV boss, were to make the right financial pitch.

Burton says if Bernie pays him, he will put on the F1???? Bernie doesn't pay for F1 races, he CHARGES!

Just debating over the cut they get. If FIA really wants F1 to be popular in the US they'll probably give it to him.
I REALLY hope they do because I'll be living a couple hours from Sonoma next year

I don't... going to see the a GP would go from being a 12 hour drive to being totally out of the question.

Does Sears Point have garages?
Indy is close for me. But Road America is closest.

Oooh sears point would rock! I could finally see an F1 race!
Doesn't seem likely though, more of a pie-in-the-sky idea.

Well, this is from a NASCAR-oriented source, so add salt accordingly.

I think I'm probably going to the Canadian GP next year anyway. So if they're not going to have it at Indy, I think Laguna Seca would be the next best place. I love that circuit!

Bernie very much wants to put on a race in Vegas using part of the strip...if rumors are to be believed. If that happens hopefully it will be slightly better than the races held in the parking lot of Ceasars Palace.
I'd love to see F1 at Laguna but honestly the track just isn't fast enough to do the modern cars justice. Even the Champ cars look painfully slow there. Now Road America on the other hand...

Vegas would suck. I went to the '82 race. It's the only place on the planet that could hold an F-1 race and nobody would know or care a block away.
Road America would be awesome.

No, more painfully slow then Monaco. After watching the MotoGP guys there. Laguna Seca should be the place but do they have the room like Indy and Sonoma for the fans and parking.

I hope F1 goes to Infinion. I live close and would go see it!
| MattDell | 07-11-2005 11:54 PM |
I think Road Atlanta would be a better option now that I think about it.
I'd also like to see a DC GP, but we know how those have gone in the past. :(

Wine Country (ie. Sonoma) would be perfect for F1 but, Infinion doesn't really have the infrastructure. I was just there last week and even though they have built up a bit it is still miles away from F1 level. Parking consists of dirt lots for the most part and there are no garages I remember.
It would cost millions to bring it up to hosting a F1 event. I'd love it if it happened but, I'm not going to be holding my breath. I guess the IRL race in Aug will be an interesting test though.
They would be much better off just to do a city street GP.

I would love to see it at Infineon. It would take me 25 minutes to get there. :D

There was a pre-Indy rumor regarding the possibility of a "North American GP" to be held at a purpose-built track financed by Steve Wynn off of the Las Vegas strip, but I haven't heard anything post-Indy. Wynn has a Penske-run Ferrari dealership and was supposedly seen wining and dining with Bernie and Max at his newly opened resort.

I think a Streets of Las Vegas GP sounds like it would be great to watch on TV, but would suck to attend. I really don't want to sit in 110+ degree August weather in Vegas. But maybe I am just not a hardcore F1 fan :alien:

Indy in 2006

I predict it will be back at Indy in 2006... Tony George may get Bernie to lower the price, and these rumors are part of the bargaining...
Bernie is looking at the states and saying, "Well if I let Tony George blow me off, then where could F1 race in the states in 2006?"
And the answer would be, as we can see in this discussion here, there is not a another track ready to accept the F1 circus in 2006.
Looking ahead to 2007, someone like Steve Wynn could toss some millions out his window and have an F1 track built in Vegas, but I wouldn't bet money on that deal coming about. Bernie has talked to Vegas before, and nothing ever came of it.
Which is too bad, because Indy is has that Mickey Mouse infield... I wish Tony George would plow up more of his damned golf course, and have Tilke or someone design a top level road course across more the infield real estate.

I think Laguna Seca would hands down be the coolest track to see F1 in America. But I don't think the track can handle it. Wasn't this weekend's MotoGP race sold out at 58,000? Probably not enough for F1.
| TimStevens | 07-13-2005 08:53 AM |
Not nearly... Silverstone had 100,000 and that's on the chopping block.

I think Barber Motor Sports Park would be a great alternative to Indy if Eddie George doesn't get his way.

vegas 2005 <> vegas 1982 way way way different

Good ole U.S. of A. football is where your mind was and I am okay with that.
I read a clip on one of the f1 sites with the guy from Sonoma. I don't think he gonna get a race if he wants Bernie to pay him. He thinks becuase Bernie has deep pockets that he should have to pay the speedway. Good luck with that.
I personally would like to see it Vegas if they do it right. The cars would have to go down the actual strip not any of this "its on the same street but 5 miles away" crap. The accomadations iin Vegas are great for all the Europeans and S. Americans and I am sure there would be plenty of flow over with time stayed. I just don't see how the track could be all that exciting. Isn't Vegas about as flat as a pool table?

I am about ready for Football.
:D
There is no way they would run on the strip. It would screw up too many things and cost Vegas business. The point I am trying to make is that Vegas would make F1 look like a club race and they would treat it that way. Hell a sold out NASCAR race barely draws a blip on their radar. Too much stuff going on there everyday. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Ill give you that. I think it would be a cool venue but 99% of the people in town at the time probably wouldn't give two flying effs about the race so I agree with you. For those of us who would be there for the race the back drop of the strip would be amazing though.

I don't know about that. I was in Vegas for a totally unrelated reason the weekend of the NASCAR race in '04 and it was very apparent that it was going on that weekend. Sure, there's plenty of other stuff going on but it was very obvious that NASCAR was in town that weekend.
I do agree that racing down the strip is unlikely though.

I'd be all over a race in Vegas! My parents live there so I wouldn't have to worry about a lodging and when the race isn't going on, there's about a billion things to do.
