v8 jdm (rhd) seats into v8 usdm (lhd) part 1

v8 jdm (rhd) seats into v8 usdm (lhd)
I've found a few threads about jdm v7 seats (sounded like a PITA), several hinted that is was much easier w/ v8 seats.

I'd like to retain height adjustment on the driver's side if possible.

Anyone know what exactly is entailed?

It's a PITA - you either need to live with out the adjustment or have the bottom 1/2 of the JDM seat cover and cushion switched over to the bottom 1/2 of the usdm seat frame.

Is there any fitment issues? I don't mind extra work, but don't want something that doesn't fit properly.

My wife is 5'2", I'm 6'- the adjustment is almost a must.

I have not done mine yet, but I have seen some photos here of people that have done it. Based on the info I have there is no fitment issues as long as you use the same version seat. (v8 jdm cover and cushion on v8 usdm frame). There is a tread here I just read in the past two or three weeks with photos of the finished product.

I'll search for the thread- if you bump into it again LMK

thanks

It's not as hard as people make it out to be. Since you have an '04, you the easiest thing to do is just take off the seat cushions from the JDM passenger seat and swap them onto the USDM drivers seat. I tried doing this with my JDM seats, but since I have an '02 the adjusters are different and it didn't line up. You should be fine since you have the updated bases.

I have literally helped my fren swapped out the different sides. Trust me, its more difficult than all the above mentioned posts said they are.

It took us almost like 4 - 6 hours to actually get it done. We had to separate the tops of both seats and exchange them together. Please note that you would also have to sacrifice your stock OEM seats so as to get the seat adjuster on the left hand side of the car. Meaning, you have to operate on a total of 4 seats no less. However, the difficult part is to get to the screws of the top, we ended up up messing up the fabric ( which is stuck with some kind of glue to the cushion ) and also damaging a little of the cushion. I can dare say it is almost impossible not to damage the cushion while taking out the seats.

And the best part ... after you do managed to swap over the seats, you will realise that the driver seat now has a hole the size of your palm at the right hand portion of the fabric ( side that faces the shift knob ). Trust me ... its huge comparing that the cushion is yellowish white in color. In the end, my friend asked his mum to sort of sew a piece of black cloth to cover the hole, and he also took another piece of folded cloth to put inbetween the seat and the centre portion where the shiftknob sits to cover the sewing. Not something you wanna do with STI JDM seats ... at least not by yourself.

It would be way easier to grow taller ...

4-6 hours???? Should take you about 2 hours at the most!!! When your done it will look stock!!! No crazy holes or anything you need to cover up!!!

1. Put the JDM drivers side into the passanger side of your car just like it is!! (It will bolt in and you will have adj on that side also)

2. Put the JDM Pass side on the floor next to your US drivers seat. (give yourself room so you can lay out all the parts your going to remove!!!)

3. pop out the little plastic covers in the centers of the adj handles.
Remove the screws that hold them in.

4. Remove the 2 plastic covers that are covering the bottom of the cushions (One cover on each side. held on with some small screws)

5. take out the 4 bolts (2 on each side) that hold the back part of the seat to the bottom part.

6. Now do 2-5 to the other seat!!! (When your done you will have the two seat bottoms with mounting rails sitting side by side)

7. Now you can remove the cushion (Has plastic clips that hold it to the metal frame/rails) Once you remove it put the JDM cushion on the US frame/rails. Bolt the back part on. Put plastic side covers on. Put adj handles back on. Bolt the drivers side into car!!!

Extra:8. You can put the old US parts on the JDM bottom rails/mounts so it all stays together while in storage or what ever your doing with them!!!

I think thats it!!! Been a while since I did mine!!!
Don't forget you will also need to fix the airbag light!!!!

^ thanks :) I'm wondering if his was a v7 seat- I did read several threads that outlined the many difficulties w/ that swap- while several suggested that v8 (usdm) to v8 (jdm) was much more straightforward- which by your description certainly sounds so.
rayc 09-23-2005 09:33 AM

You just take your time pulling them apart and putting them back together and you will have no problems!! :D
wrxmyers 09-23-2005 09:35 AM

i just installed them without swapping the height adjuster onto the jdm ones and im 5'7'' and i fit and feel exactly where i was at with the usdm one adjusted. Just my 2cents.

Could be!!! But if he used the 02-03 WRX bottoms for the V7 it would have been easy just like the 04-05 WRX bottoms for V8...
BIGSKYWRX 09-23-2005 10:47 PM

Evidently the jdm v7 seats/brackets didn't = the usdm seats/brackets- at least that's what I gathered from the threads I read.

Irregardless - I'm considering a v8/v8 swap and sounds like it will work :D

Spot on man thank you oh so much. I followed this number by number and mine worked out great. I did take pictures at each step and I will get them hosted up tonight or tomorrow, I think the combination of photos and instructions should become a good how to.

im planning to cut and re weld the rear brackets on the seats and then just swap the jdm seats. the seatbelt wont be functional anymore but im getting a 3 point harness anyways
BlackEyeII 11-30-2006 05:58 PM

Photos!
Here are some photies of my swap
1. Step one line up the JDM passenger seat and the USDM drivers seat.

2. Remove the plastics off of each of them

3. Remove USDM STI passenger seats and drop in JDM replacement.

4. Remove the four bolts 14mm on each seat that hold the backs on and remove the backs.

5. Turn the seat bottoms over and find the plastic clips and remove the seat bottom material and padding as one piece. Front > Sides > rear works best for removing clips.

Swap seat fabrics and cushions and re-assemble everything.

Time consuming but not that hard.

Note: I also re-assembled my USDM seat with the JDM bottom so now I have two non hieght adjustable USDM STI seats....

I also had to cut the area for the height adjustment handle mount to come through the JDM material.

Last note, I could not get one of the material clips to hook back correctly from the JDM fabric so I threaded a zip tie through the clip and attached it to the bracket. It worked perfectly. I took a closeup of it somewhere...

nice seats!! but yeah.. the swap isn't that hard. i did it on with my JDM v8s pretty quick after i realized i wasted a lot of time trying to uninstall the rails first lol
NewSTI 11-30-2006 07:12 PM

dang.. i SOOOOO want to do that...but don't know if it's worth to mess up my oem STI seat...
CarQz17 11-30-2006 07:22 PM

does it match alright? or does the blue carpet, door cards, and rear seats kinda ruin the 'black' effect?...hard to see in pics

Thank you Sir!

with blue door cards, it looks "werid"..it HAS to be all black to make those JDM seats worth the money...at least that's what i think when i first put spec Cs in my car
akinasdevil 12-02-2006 07:19 AM

This should be a stick/thread of note. Well done!!!
o2sys 10-24-2007 04:47 PM

Bring a thread back to life,

I have HKS Kansai rails on my JDM Pass. seat (Currently my driver's seat).

If i do this mod by sacrificing a USDM driver seat, i will no longer be able to use the HKS rails right? since the HKS rails only work on JDM seat rails... can anyone confirm?
wrxsnowstyle 12-29-2007 11:07 PM

bump for his question and mine-

im looking at buying the jdm srd recaro's, but am wondering if there is a way to switch the passenger and driver seat- id like to retain usage of my adjuster on the left side and not next to the center console.

Yes, I have hieght adjustments on both the drivers and passengers seats.

I run the USDM drivers seat bottom frame on the drivers side that has been swapped with JDM foam and material for a Spec C Type RA setup. I run the standard setup on the passenger side from the JDM seat.

To do this I had to sacrafice my stock seat height adjustment, but I sold those off anyway as two non-ajustable seats.

No one who was looking at them seemed to care about not having the hieght adjustment.

I wrote a thread on doing the swap, but I hear my links to pics have died. I no longer have those photos. (old hard drive)
wrxsnowstyle 12-30-2007 12:43 AM

so this is only doable if im looking at jdm sti seats? id really like some recaro's or brides, the sti ones dont really hold me in as well as my current 02 wrx seats.
wrxsnowstyle 12-30-2007 08:12 PM

bump for me searching and not finding any answers. it seems to me that most people give up the seat adjustability when they get seats.
candamo 02-20-2012 10:06 AM

bump, anyone knows if the seats from the 1.6 Impreza fit the JDM cushions?
