Top 10 shootout part 1

johnfelstead 08-01-2002 07:47 AM

Top 10 shootout

I will be competing in a fun event on Sunday, probably the biggest head to head comparison ever taken place between modified road cars.

It's run by the 200MPH plus club to find the ultimate modified road car. Mine being a pretty much bog standard STi5 TypeRA, I will get my ass kicked big style on the half-mile and 1.5-mile drag runs, but it should be fun seeing how I do on the handling section.

The format is quite simple, get the top 10 cars from each make together in one place and see how they compare on a standing start to ½ mile drag run. 1 ½ mile top speed run plus a handling sprint course.

There are 10 Skylines, Subaru's, Supra TT, Vipers, Rover's, Cosworth's, RS Turbo's, Nissan GtiR's, Mitsubishi EVO's. There are also invited one off's like GT2 Porsches and twin turbo RX7's.

It should be a good laugh, I'll take my Camera, wish me luck, I'll need it. ;)

P.S I am praying for rain!!!!! :D

John, believe it or not, I'm doing a rain dance for you RIGHT NOW.

bliu 08-01-2002 09:22 AM

have you removed the speed limiter (if there is one) in your car yet? and what's the top speed with or w/o the limiter? sounds like you'll have some fun, at least on the handling sprint course.;)
Subie Gal 08-01-2002 09:25 AM

Gooooooooooo JF!!! :D
heheheeheee have fun M8... ;)

kick some arse!

johnfelstead 08-01-2002 10:11 AM

I'll try J! :D

The speed limiter is removed on Import, top speed with the limiter is 115MPH.

My STi has an unusual gearset installed, it has the TypeRA 1st to 4th so it gets to 115MPH incredibly quickly (8200rpm in 4th) but it has the higher STi non RA 5th gear which takes the car to 180MPH. The Normal TypeRA tops out at 150MPH.

I wont make it to 180MPH, it hasnt got the power to overcome the drag, i would think 160MPH is more realistic. Fastest so far is 145MPH at the ring, on a corner.

I am having a special STi anti surge fuel pump assembly installed on saturday, i can get fuel surge at half a tank right now. This should allow me to run the car almost empty, which should improve the handling and acceleration a little.

Forecast is now Rain!! Last night it was for Sun. :D Keep dancing in Georgia.

It seems to be working  keep dancing!weather for the event

I was chating to my pal Gareth Lloyd last night. He has made his 600BHP championship winning Escort Cosworth race car road legal for this, plus to take to the ring.:lol: I think he may just win this, that car is truly awesome!

I'm doing the pee-pee dance. Does that help?

Any form of H2O is acceptable. :D
johnfelstead 08-03-2002 11:52 AM

Forecast is now for Sunny Intrevals. Nooooooooooooooooooo :(

I have just had my STi fuelpump assembly installed, not had chance to test it on a fast corner with low fuel yet though.

Oh yeh, i ended up with a scoobymania development back box on the car too.:D Can anyone say LOUD!!!!!!!  Should make it sound nice on the Video of the event anyway. :D
johnfelstead 08-04-2002 08:06 PM

wooohoooo Fastest Subaru of the day award goes to.......

Just got home! Absolutely fantastic day.

The handling circuit runs was a fantastic battle with Puff The Magic Wagon (a PPP engined 5 door with ledaB suspension, all the handling goodies etc) we were trading thousanths at times!

At one stage i was faster with my wet weather run than in the dry as it let me use the front diff more. I set a 35.00s in the wet, which is nuts really. There is just so much grip when the front diff is wound up, it doesnt work in the dry though, the balance is all wrong.

I set my second fastest time going backwards through the timing beam, as i lost it through the last corner as red mist took over, I wasnt backing off! fun stuff. :D

My fastest was 33.67s, which i am chuffed to bits with, that was faster than the class winning Fisher Fury kit car! Fastest on the handling course was my pal Gareth Lloyd in his 600BHP Escort Cosworth race car with a 31.9s. The overall event winning 700BHP Skyline set 32.33s so i was pretty damn close for a bog standard car running normal road tyres rather than sticky R type jobbies. :D

I have a ton of pictures to upload which i will post tomorrow night!

OK, bed for me. Looky what i won, thanks to RC developments for sponsoring the Subaru's!

Big ass trophy for fastest Subaru on the handling course

Cusco rear strut brace. :D

P.S I got my ass kicked on the drag strip :D there are some powerful scoobs out there now! Very impresive!

This should make you laugh. My first drag run, up against a Viper. I kicked its ass up to 100MPH then he just disapeared! Better vids up later.

Finally, what happens to a set of Bridgestone SO2 PP tyres when you are nailing 280BHP through them on a twisty sprint track. :D

johnfelstead 08-04-2002 08:15 PM

Here is the Info from the event overall!!!!!!!

*NOTE* The drag times are over 500 metres, not 1/4 mile. 500 metres is slightly further and is the guiness world record distance in use.

I would have won the handling track outright no problem, but no way would i have beaten that skyline on the drag runs, its was incredible!

Next year i'll take the scoob plus the 700BHP/Tonne Atom i am building. I should kick ass in that. ;)
johnfelstead 08-04-2002 09:19 PM

oops

I have just been reminded that my time wasnt as i stated, the time of 33.67 was my backwards through the timing beam run.

My fastest was 33.04. :D

I cant for the life of me think why that first time stuck in my mind. ;):D
Patrick L 08-04-2002 10:38 PM

GGeeeezzzz John, you need some camber in the rear. Heck, I cored a pair of SO-2 PP's at the begining of last year but that was do to the fact I wore out the tread and got all the way the down to the cord. Man, you burnt up the sides
I autocrossed on SO-2 PP's the last 2 season. I wish we could still get them. :(

johnfelstead 08-05-2002 06:01 AM

Hi pat,

I run 1.5 degrees front and rear camber, thats about as much as i want to go to on the car as it is my daily driver.

I am on tired stock TypeRA suspension so the car was rolling a lot, add to that being able to put all 280BHP through the rear wheels it tends to roll the tyre over on its sides. The wear is actually on the top, not the sidewall, but it is right on the edge of the top.

Looking at the times i have so far, i think i set the 5th fastest time overall, i was just 0.04s behind the fastest EVO that has a genuine 560BHP and all the kit to match! Not bad in a stock STi5 TypeRA. :D

Hope we see some more vids soon, i doubt the DVD will be ready for a few weeks.

Heres a vid of the norris evo 5 with a quoted 587hp

johnfelstead 08-05-2002 08:27 PM

Thanks J! :D

Thats the EVO that beat me by 0.04s on the handling track. :D

I cant tell you about the 2.5 turbo i am afraid. I am sure more info will come out eventually, but i promised not to divulge what i know. All i will say is throw away any thoughts you have about this being an American 2.5 turbo conversion.
aspera 08-05-2002 11:17 PM

non-American 2.5 turbo conversion? OK, so it's not a 2.5 RS-T. Would it be a filled 2.5 Phase 2 block with WRX heads ala Cobb? Or maybe some stroker cranked bored out solid deck block? How about a 2.5 block like Cobb makes, but with AVCS STi heads? How about a destroked 6 cylinder?:)

they just keep going and going and going:)
johnfelstead 08-06-2002 06:52 AM

no problem, they are not the crispest, i got a bit of crap on the lens that wouldnt clean off properly.

I was more interested in driving than taking pictures though, cant think why? ;)

I am saying nothing about the 2.5 turbo, sorry. This is an engine built and designed by 2 of my friends here in the UK, it has nothing to do with any established tuner. I think its pretty safe to say its the most powerful impreza engine in the UK by some margin, and it isnt running nitrous or anything like that, this will be driven regularly on the road.

The guy who owns and built it is Mark Aigin, the other chap is Pat, a very clever guy.

Have a look on 22B.COM and scoobynet, you will see them posting in the technical forums as Pat and R19KET
johnfelstead 08-06-2002 06:32 PM

results are now posted, they had a cutoff time of 3:30pm which is why my winning time is slower than my ultimate fastest. They did show it aditionally on the results though, which is cool. :D

I'm blown away by the top speed numbers. That C76 Norris Designs Mitsubishi Evo 5 187 (MPH) should be shipped over to the US and compete in one of those Motor Trend top speed shootouts. I'd pay money to watch Mustang owners mouth the words "one hundred eighty-seven", and then try to do the math and figure out how much faster that is than a Mustang GT.:)

I can't badmouth Fords too much, just look at the numbers. Those are some FAAAAST Escorts. Most of the other cars look like they would have decent handling at high speed. The EVO and Fords look bricklike by comparison. How do the Subarus handle?
