Airbag light on after new seat install? part 1

Airbag light on after new seat install?
Anyone know of a "for sure" way of getting your airbag light to turn off after installing new aftermarket seats? I've tried the 3 10-ohm resistors in parallel of each other and it didn't work for me. Haven't tried the 3-ohm resistor as I haven't yet been able to find one. I read over at another forum that Subaru told him that none of the airbags will work if the airbag light is on. I'm not sure if the seats are worth it if none of the airbags will deploy in a wreck, not to mention any insurance problems you could run into. Any help would be appreciated.
Capt Crunch 01-31-2005 09:01 AM

I think as close as you can get to 3.3 ohms.

3 10ohm resistors should have worked.

what you've been told is not true.

i removed my driver side airbag from my legacy

air bag light on (well duh!)

totalled the car when someone made a LH turn in front of me
pass side airbag exploded just fine as that sensor was still connected

each airbag has it's own sensor
if the sensors are connected, the bags will deploy.

What did your insurance company have to say about that? Or did they even know about the steering wheel? This issue concern me as well.
Mulder 01-31-2005 08:05 PM

Yes the 10 ohm resistors should have worked. Did you test them with an ohmeter to make sure they read 3.3 ohms when you were done?

No I did not...

I did the required paperwork and obtained approval from the Fed's indicating that i am permitted to have an on/off airbag switch installed in my car (I am 5' tall... nothing more)

nobody would install one. i mean nobody.

so i yarded out the airbag and put a racing wheel in.
lost my $2 airbag insurance discount. whooopeee

Insurance company fully covered the car when it was totalled.

anyway, the airbag will go off. just an FYI

sorry to kinda hijack the thread a little bit, but does anyone have any links or could give me some info on how to do the resistor thing? ive got some V.7 seats coming, and am going to need to deal w/ this when they get here. thanks
cnk 02-07-2005 10:49 AM

Bend resistor wires and insert into the connector. Wrap with electrical tape to keep secure. Can't get much easier then that. ;)

Calvin
IDAFC21 02-07-2005 11:37 AM

certainly couldnt....but just humor me for a second and pretend I have no idea what kind of resistors youre talking about, or where to get them :) My public school knowledge of deductive reasoning tells me im looking for 3.3 ohm resistors, but whats the 10 ohm resistor thing?
cnk 02-07-2005 11:42 AM

If you can't find the 3.3-Ohm resistors, you can make your own with 3 10-Ohm resistors.

Calvin

would these work? http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=002-3.3K
cnk 02-07-2005 01:55 PM

No. . .that is 3.3K-Ohm. . .you want 3.3-Ohm.

oh snap, didnt catch that. Thanks. ok, hijack over
lawn boy 02-07-2005 07:49 PM

i gotta know...where do you put these resistors :o
dubba you are ex 02-08-2005 10:52 AM

they should have a "cel" fix for it
jikhead 02-17-2005 09:59 AM

Well, I guess my car is just immune to these resistors. I tried the resistors that another member sent me, that he had used and worked for him. Air bag light won't go off...so guess I'm just going to have to live with it. Unless someone else has another idea for me.
cnk 02-17-2005 10:03 AM

Did you disconnect the battery, then insert the resistors, then reconnect the battery? Did you insert the resistor far enough into the connector to ensure that it is making contact?

Calvin
jikhead 02-17-2005 01:55 PM

Yes I did. It actually was turned off for a few minutes earlier today. I made a delivery to a school and noticed it wasn't on. Though it was fixed. However, once I got back in my car after the delivery, it was back on. So, back to square one again.
wht052.5 02-17-2005 02:04 PM

Did you F*** with your seatbelts at all? It might just be the pretensioner in the belt, I think they are on the same sensor system, you airbags will probably work fine.
As for the light, Electrical ****e doesn't work well with me so I recommend ye old electrical tape fix. :)
jikhead 02-25-2005 11:10 AM

UPDATE: AFter a few days of leaving the resistors in place, the air bag light is now off.
ESEMES 02-25-2005 01:22 PM

you need the 3.3OHM (no K!) resistors, and in the watt variety.

i have some extras hgere, and would be happy to help out anyone in need.

let me know

they are tough as heck to find, believe me, and i understand your frustrations!

Thanks, but I think you misread my post or I didn't word it very well. I was stating that after unsuccessful attempts at getting the air bag light to turn off, even with the resistors another member sent me, I couldn't get it to work. I finally gave up and just left the resistors in place and said I'd #### with it later. I noticed after a few days, the air bag light had successfully turned itself off. I guess the computer had to learn itself again on the switch or something. Thanks again.

perhaps the connection wasnt tight, and eventually rumbled into place?
DILLIGAF Racing 03-16-2005 03:44 PM

how many do you need per seat?
cnk 03-16-2005 03:47 PM

1 3.0 Ohm resistor per airbag connector so 1 per seat.

Calvin
DILLIGAF Racing 03-16-2005 05:55 PM

or 3.3? $.69 is ALOT of money  Don't want to be wasting it. My seat should be in by the weekend. If I put it in, will I have any issues without the resistor in place?
DILLIGAF Racing 03-19-2005 07:12 PM

did my seat, put the resistor in, and the light came on the second time I drove it. Not checking it anymore tonight. Doesn't really bother me, cause it blends in with the dash.
kennyvb 03-19-2005 07:34 PM

three 10 ohm resistors in parallel worked for me
DILLIGAF Racing 03-19-2005 08:11 PM

I used a 3.3ohm 1/4w I'll check it tomorrow

you need the watt
DILLIGAF Racing 03-19-2005 08:24 PM

well, that sucks. Guess I am going to have a light on for a couple of days then
rad one 04-09-2005 05:19 AM

well i just put some 4.7s in and hopefully they'll turn off once the computer learns it (?) like what happened with yours...if not then im off to see cKevin on monday at AHQ. this thread should be on scoobymods on something.

it takes less than 4 sec. for the 3.3's to turn the light off. no others (to my knowledge.experience) will work. (must get the right voltage, too)

I've been giving away 3ohm resistors for the cost of a self addressed stamped envelope. I still have about 400 left.
See thread if interested...

turboimpreza07 06-21-2005 07:27 PM

I have that same problem, but it's because I took off my bumper support, because I got in an accident, but it wasn't hard enough to make the air bags deploy and that was almost a year ago....So I figured I'll try the resistor idea, but I don't know where to put them...so where do I? I have a 94 Impreza, so any suggestions on location would be gr8..thanks
