Big Crash in 2 Hours...

Hey evreyone,
The Grand-Am race at The Glen is on in two hours. I had 3 in-car cameras on my car for this race. I'm hoping they will show some of my trek through the field from 27th to the front.
I KNOW they will show the crash I was involved in.
Anyway, Speed Channel, Sunday 6/27, 2:00pm eastern/11:00am pacific.

Excellent ... thanks for the notice.
I'm about to quote your cornering breakdown advice (from the Under/Over steer Thread)in a message to a novice AX'er ... just to show him how complex cornering is! :)
To bad you didn't drive your regular Suby race car in the Sports Compact "Lap Dance" test ! Why didn't you ... :(

Nice work getting up to 3rd from 27th. Too bad about the accident though.
| GarySheehan | 06-27-2004 08:41 PM |
Actually I got up to 1st. That crash was when the 2nd place driver was trying to pass me on the inside, then didn't give any room at all at the exit.

Yeah Gary, what in God's name was Thornton screaming at you about? He's the one that went wide into you.
| Butt Dyno | 06-27-2004 09:56 PM |
I already ranted about this on another forum, but the coverage/explanation/editing of the BMW slamming into Gary's car was awful. They didn't even mention that he was first at the time. You'd think 27th-to-first would be a bigger deal.

I was wondering the same thing. Even Dorsey Schraeder said he cut Gary off.

Yeah. Saw the crash and it was obvious that he came out into you. You were clearly already all the way on the outside edge of the track and he just came out right into your line. I suppose he thought he was clear? Or that you'd just go off track to avoid him? Clearly not your fault from what I saw.
| lukerussell | 06-28-2004 08:43 AM |
I love watkins glen. I think that's my favorite track yet. It was obviously the other guy's fault. He either thought he was clear of gary or thought if he came out far enough, gary would hit the brakes. that turn is so wide and uphill and banked that it couldn't of been a car control problem.

For those of you that missed it the coverage really wasn't that great. But I guess thats a side result of condensing a 250 mile race into an hour of coverage. It seemed like more happened in the parts that they didn't show than during what they did show. For example they cut away right as Gary passed for 2nd place and then came back and said "oh, by the way this is crash occurred" and showed Gary's crash. I thought that the announced was saying it was Gary's fault for not giving more room (when the only thing for Gary to do was slow way down or drive off the track). Did I misinterpret what he said?
| Butt Dyno | 06-28-2004 12:17 PM |
 I transcribed it yesterday.. here is what the announcer said..
"Look right there, the 4, the Audi of Gary Sheehan just does not give the BMW... (enough room? what? finish the sentence!) right on board, take a look here, BAM just cuts him off, BOOM, that is a big hit... (the announcer sounds like John Madden)and that was at a corner where two cars can go side by side. [cut to shot of BMW driver waving his hands around] Obviously very upset driver here, lucky he's not injured"
That was a REALLY poor description of the events, IMHO. And they didn't mention the little detail where Gary was in the lead when it happened.

Hey Gary,
I saw it yesterday. As everyone else is saying, pretty poor coverage. Hopefully the officials realize what happened and who blew it.
Anyway, are you feeling better? And are you going to be at Sears Point, (Infinion) in July?

I was back and forth all day doing house stuff. I saw Gary in 3rd place for a few laps, but that is petty much all I caught.
Anyone got some video of the incident? Gary?

Didn't see the incident on TV unfortunately...
Is this a matter of Gary getting the blame/short shrift because he's new to the series?
You'd think a crash between P1 and someone trying to pass for the lead would be a major highlight of the race, not a sidebar:confused: Like I said though, I didn't see it, so maybe I don't have all the info.

Gary, it was much more exciting to watch what I did see knowing you are on this site. I was telling my girlfriend about you and even she was pretty interested!
Keep up the hard work. You looked really good out there.

If they are your in-car videos, why do you need permission from speed channel to post the videos?
Just wondering.

Because the ownership rights of all in-car videos is typically retained by the event owner. That's just the way it is, like it or not.

Actually, they were Speed Channel cams, so the footage is the property of Speed Channel.
I don't know much about the BMW driver. I think he may be the team owner, though.

Don't hold your breath. For some reason Speed can show "Tuner Transformations" 4 or 5 times a week, but races only get aired once, maybe twice if it's F1...

That's not true. I saw some monster trucks racing around a muddy stadium repeated at least twice this week :)

Well, the good news about it all is that you got several good mentions of your name as you were coming into the leading group. You also were up on the leaderboard list they showed before commercial break. I think Leigh Diffy said, "......some of you may remember Gary from his great run up at Mont-Tremblant".
Hey, that's good stuff, great exposure, well deserved!

I watched the "incident" again last night (with 1 & 3yr old boys, I tape all day time broadcasting), and the BMW driver clearly did not check to see if he had cleared Gary, fully intending to run to the edge of the track on exit. Infact, he was barely ahead of Gary at the apex, leaving Gary with little opportunity to avoid contact.
I think Dorsey's comments would have been different, had he seen complete footage of the incident.
Gary, I think the complete footage will fully vindicate you.
Martin

wow, that was a hard hit Gary. Yeah, he gave you no room and probably never looked too see if he clear you. I bet he feels like an ass now.

Holly cow, that is just plain scarry. I will just have to wait paitently for speed to allow you to release the in car footage. I am wondering what action is taken in this type of situation, or is there none at all? I hope for the best in your career gary. I have watched you fervently ever since i saw you in the comparo of scoobies way back when in SCC. I almost wish Sport Compact Car would do a good size feature on the wrx you campaign, and only hope for the days when Subaru uses an sti to do battle with the big boys in this very same type of atmoshpere with the audi. ;).
