Photos of todays California Sports Car Club AX
I was lucky working first ... no rain. Street Modified ran 3rd group ... track still wet, but no rain. As you can see, later in the day we had torrential rain. Crazy Californians ... a lot of them don't own Rain Gear!
We had to run a short tight course today (fast times were in the low 60's) because our Ca Speedway parking lot was so flooded yesterday. See these PHOTOS
Even though the course started to dry for my runs, I stayed with the short 245/35/17 Falken 451 Tires (thanks Tom) instead of the Hoosiers ... and they proved to be the right choice for this tight course. I ended up second, about 0.2 out of first ...

Reminds me of the Atlanta ProSolo last year in February, except it was about 35 degrees in Atlanta that weekend as well. Second most miserable autox conditions I've ever been in.

hahaha ... I pulled my car next to the safety boundry and shot out of the side window ... and still got somewhat wet. The not very sharp photos of cars splashing through the water were through the front windshield ....
If you thinking these shots are good ... what until you see Alberts shots ... the fellow under the umbrella. I will post a link to his WONDERFUL professional shots when he has them up in a few days ...
My shots were taken with a Canon D-60 (6.3 megapixels) with a Sigma 70/200 f2.8 lens with a 1.4X extender. The camera's smaller then 35 mm imaging senor also magnifies the image another 1.6X. Total focal length thus equals 450 mm. It was getting so dark I had to set the ISO to 1000 ... that's why some are so noisy/grainy. You will see that Alberts pictures are sharper and have more "snap" to them ... because his Nikon lens is sharper/contrastier then my relatively inexpensively Sigma lens.

Wow, that's alot of rain. Funny thing is. It was Sunny and 79 in NE OKlahoma for our event yesterday. Man, I would have thought I was in south Texas.
| omahasubaru | 02-21-2005 08:06 PM |
Either way you all suck... our first event isn't until March 20th. We even had some drizzle/sleet today with highs around 38.
I need to move somewhere with an extended autocross season.

Lots of Volvo photos because it belongs to a Team Blew fellow who wrecked his WRX on the freeway during one of our recent rain storms. He found a great deal on a special edition 850R ... and it was his first time out with it ...

That blue tape is just painters paper tape, available in 2" width at any store with house painting supplies.
Steve Warwick is just getting started in AX. He was 4th out of 13 in SK1 on Sunday ... getting beat by a STI, S2000 and a EVO 8.
But Randy Chase has been racing his Elise for a number of months now. The stock spring/shocks are too soft for the rapid transitions found in AX. Robert Puerta's Elise should be ready to join Randy's at the ProSolo in Fontana in a couple of weeks. They are working of stiffening things up. It's going to be interesting to see them running in AS ...
... one of S.D. Paul's great AX'ing shots ...

Kinda surprised that the Elise springs are too soft for autox, but i'm more of a trackwhore then autoxer..
BTW Ratt_Finkle I've seen Z06 Vettes at the track with hoods completely covered in that painter tape.. As if it's going to protect it when the guy in front of them takes an excursion into the dirt kicks little pebbles everywhere on the track...

SK1 = one of our popular regional Street Tire classes ... SS, AS, BS and FS ... with Street Tires, with Tread Wear of 140 or more ....
1) 2) 3) (f) (g) STREET TIRE (SK1 & SK2): (a) Purpose: To encourage drivers who compete in CSCC SOLO II events to race on the same tires they use on the street. (Also referred to as Street Stock.) (b) Eligibility - SK1 & SK2: Any Stock Class legal car, prepared in accordance with Para. 13 of the 2003 SCCA National SOLO II Rulebook, with the exception that all of the tires mounted on the car must have a TREADWEAR number of 140 or higher molded by the manufacturer on the sidewall. (c) Indexing: Each car competing in the Street Stock class will be indexed in accordance with the PAX (performance) index. For the sole purpose of team championship point calculation, times shall also receive an additional Street Tire index (SK) which is listed in Appendix C. (d) Separate classes: SK1 consists of SS, AS, BS and FS. SK2 consists of CS, DS, ES, GS and HS. Men and Ladies shall compete in separate classes. (e) Registration: Each Street Stock competitor shall, in addition to listing SK1 or SK2 in the Class block, shall list the class he/she would normally run in (e.g. if a competitor normally runs CS, he would write SK2 in the Class block and CS in the Indexed Class block). Results: Every Street Stock competitor will have their corrected times listed, then the PAX index for their car, followed by the best 'indexed' time, arrived at by multiplying their best corrected time by the PAX index number for the cars class and also the SK index from Appendix C. [Example Calculation: (Best Time) X (Class Index) X (Street Tire Index) = Final Indexed Time] Trophies: Trophies will be awarded for each event in accordance with Para. 7.12

So it's basically a steet tire stock class. Here was just put a T in front of the Normal designation, and everyone is grouped together.

We have TOO many cars/drivers in our region. When they open up a practice session, which is typically limited to 80 drivers ... if you don't have your check in the mail that day ... you won't get in. During the winter months we have to limit our race entries to 250 ... otherwise we might run out of light. We had one winter event last year where the drivers in the afternoon only got TWO runs ... because we had something like 350 drivers! Luckily, with San Diego close by ... we usually get at least two to four days of AX a month.

man, I'm all for rain and everything during autocross but I hope it doesn't dump buckets for the ProSolo. A bit of rain = good, Lake Fontana = bad...

Originally the ProSolo was suppose to be held in a different parking lot ... but CA Spdwy took it away from us. Yes ... it would be a problem to hold the ProSolo in Lot 12 if it rained like last weekend. It was much worse then last Oct. when the course I designed had to be radically altered to work when we started to lose the southwest corner of the lot. We had to move one corner three times before we started the event! ;-( The advance weather outlook does show some likely hood of precipitation in the days leading up to the ProSolo ...

Yeah, our region is usually about 225-250 members in the summer events, which are the most popular. And when there are that many, we get 3 runs. Luckily, there are numerous other clubs to race with.

i have both ridden in and driven an elise and i would say that the stock suspension is dialed almost perfect for autoX(only other comparisions are stock WRX wagon susp.). those cars are an absolute dream car for autoX.

We have a Elise being driven by an ex National AX Champ ... and he says that the stock Elise is too soft in rapid transition, ie. slaloms. They were trying the car out with Hoosiers ... so perhaps it was the extra grip of the R compounds that was too much for the stock springs/struts.
| Calamity Jesus | 02-24-2005 06:15 PM |
IIRC, one of the major changes that Lotus made to the Elise when they brought it over, was to increase suspension compliance because of Detroitian roads.
?- What stock cars are good enough for race rubber on an autox course out of the box?

| makofoto | 02-24-2005 06:25 PM |
I believe most of the National classes for the Elise require R tires to be competitive ... so our local drivers are I believe working on getting their struts re-valved. I know one was having the stock struts dynoed to get a base line.

Albert is giving us a great deal ... $60 for coverage of our entire 11 or 12 race series, plus probably the local National events. You get your own on-line folder on his site with hi-res versions of your shots, a CD with all of the shots at year end, plus a number of enlargement. We're so lucky to have this type of quality photographic coverage in our region.
