Of course I would. When is the last time you pulled your own teeth. Sure, the Nascar people use their own pliers  But I would rather go to a professional anyday. Goto the link from ZMW, I went to the same place. Frankly, I love the feature.

Did you guys see the wrx rollover pics from that Prelude site's thread? It looked like the bar in the roof saved his life. After seeing those pics I wouldn't want a moonroof if it cut into that.

Hey does anyone know if it's ok to put in one of those rally roof vents that go along with the roof scoop. The scoop and vent are $109 each. So hey it sounds good to me, i was just wondering if it would be ok for the structural strength. The scoop isnt really big so I'm not sure how much it would affect the rigidity of the car. I hope this hasnt been asked before. And does anyone have one of these installed? if so pics please!

Since it doesn't touch the structural support bars it should be fine. If you want more protection (sunroof or not) you could always have a roll bar installed. ;)

I think it is funny how everyone said that Subaru would never put a moonroof in the WRX due to the structual bar that goes across the roof... and look what is an option on the '04 model!!! I dont like how Subaru has the glass go in below the sheetmetal and above the cross-bar because it drops the headliner 2.3" lower than a standard roof. That is the only reason I did not get the Premium Package on my car. I am 6'3" and I did not fit with the roof so low!!!
I may look into an aftermarket one though... When I get some money. ;)

I would love to see pictures with the roof liner out of a 2004 to see if there is a difference between it and a 2003. I am real familiar with the roof of the 2002-2003 wagons. :)

Dale: I would think that they share the same roof structure.
elixirvtec: The 2004s added the Premium Package which comes with a moonroof (although it is somewhat small for what you pay for it).

OK other then speculation is there any physical proof that removing that bar is going to compromise the structural integrity to a dangerous point? i.e. anyone hear anything from someone with one installed that rolled their car? I know here in AK of one guy that rolled his rex wagon...totalled the sucker...but it didnt have a moon/sun roof...so much for wagon satisfaction :)

Like Triton has said, I've rally-x'd, auto-x'd, taken some very spirited drives through the CO mountains and I haven't noticed any problems.
I guess the only real way to tell if our moonroofs effect the integrity is that someone with one rolls their car. But I'm not gonna volunteer myself for that experiment.;)

No it's not. From my understanfing, for the JDMs, they had a small enough moonroof that fit between the structural support, and like you said, the current one goes underneath the support. It's still there in each application, and it's still quite relevant.

I really want a sunroof but I am not going to cut that large beam.
The idea of a small sunroof that opens to the ouside of the car is something I am very interested in.
I talked to Zeibart about a sunroof and the guy told me it would be no problem to put one in. He could just cut the beam, they do it all the time.
 So much for that idea.
I need to find a good custom shop like some of the guys here have done.

So are these sunroofs/moonroofs that we are seeing ones that just pop up, or do they slide back as well? If they pop up only, then the integrity shouldn't be compimised much. If they slide back, either inside or out, they need rails that would run through the center cross rail, and that would affect integrity. I wouldn't worry so much about auto/rally-x, but crashes. Here's a sedan that rolled, and you can see where the collapsing roof stopped - at the cross rail.

It can be done, just be aware of the trade-offs and don't just believe the seller that 'everything's OK'.
I wouldn't be suprised if Subaru took time for the '04 to design a cross rail that could accomodate a sunroof, without loosing much crashworthyness.

| reno_bk | 12-23-2003 11:35 AM |
For all the earlier posts implying that the USDM Impreza's roof is somehow different enough to not allow a factory sunroof, I'd like to add that the upcoming Saab 9-2x has a sunroof optional. Since the 9-2x is identical to the WRX/TS wagons in every way except trim, I'd guess that adding a roof is not going to kill the structure of that car. From the looks of the Saab's sunroof, it's the same size as the OEM sunroof in teh WRX sedan for 2004.

I got the roof installed back in June and it's been great so far; no leaks, no defects, no nothing. I use it every chance I get. There's a bit of wind noise at speeds above 75mph (getting really bad above 100mph) but if you close the shade, you can't hear anything.
It sounds like I have the same roof as the original thread poster. Webasto-Hollandia, one-touch open/close, auto (if you want) close, two presets, new headliner, $1100, etc.
I enjoy "spirited" driving as often as possible and have not noticed a difference in the way the car behaves from before and after the install. I will be participating in a trackday/weekend in April as well as some Auto-X events this coming season and will probably find any ill-effects then.
Sorry for jumping on the bandwagon a little late but, I didn't see anybody post some up close pictures. Hope this helps anyone decide.

LYHTSPD,
To be honest, I didn't ask if they cut the beam that's on everyone's mind. I'll call and ask here in a couple of days.
As far as how much lower the headliner is, couldn't tell you. For what it's worth, I'm 6'0," keep the stock seat slid as far back as possible, reclined in a fairly upright position (although my Dad disagrees), set on its lowest, height adjustable setting (I think), and have about an inch of clearance between the top my Arai RX7-RR3 and the headliner. The B-pillar and hand grip might be a slight issue, depending on the corner, but nothing to get in a fuss about.

To everyone who wants a sunroof: do NOT get one made by "ASC" ... they are crap and the one I had installed in my truck 4 years ago still leaks to this day. As if thats not bad enough, sometimes it jams halfway shut.
A friend of mine has the factory moonroof in his euro-spec 02 WRX. If anyone wants me to, I can measure it and take pictures.
