After finding a Spec C Type RA full interior for an awesome deal, I began researching swapping seats into an 06 WRX TR. The 06 model has a "smart airbag system". More info about that can be found at this thread.

Unbolt neg. battery terminal first.
The below pics are from my passenger detection system swap. This system includes, a seat belt sensor, passenger weight detection bladder with module. The seat also has side airbags integrated into the seat.

The seat belt sensor is a direct swap just unclip, unbolt, bolt to new seat, and reclip. It doesn't get any easier.

I used the resistor trick to fool the side airbags.

You will need to lift the upholstery retainer clips on the seat (two small black plastic clips on the sides,

and one long plastic piece on the front of the seat.

Fold back the upholstery slightly, and lift the foam. You will need to pop out two little green retainer clips.

The bladder will then slide right out from the front of the seat.

Removing the module (black plastic box) is a little more involved. You will need a drill for this. Unplug the harness, and drill out the two rivets.

Here is the bladder in the specC seat. The module is not mounted in this picture, but I used industrial 3M double sided tape. I also had to fabricate a small mounting bracket to hold the signal transducer. (This is the black plastic piece that converts the gel bladder's mechanical signal to an electrical signal that then goes to the module.) I used a small piece of steel much like the small L bracket (to the left of the drill) in the above pic.

Re-attach everything.
Edit: 12/12/11, I just picked up a huge bag of 3.3 ohm resistors, pm me if you need some.

I performed the removal part of this mod today... removing the weight sensing bladder and control module from my stock 06sti seat. Maybe soon I'll get around to attempting to install it into my aftermarket seat.
The removal was SUPER easy, by the way.

and here's a step-by-step of placing the occupant detection system into a Corbeau CR-1 passenger side aftermarket seat:
Here's the pressure bladder, removed from the stock seat. It's three layers - a felt pad, the bladder itself, and then a protective plastic sheet on top:

remove the rails from the new seat (if they were already installed):

this is the bladder, the seatbelt sensor, and the control module. The bladder and seatbelt sensors plug into the module:

peel back the upholstry to gain access to the bottom. On the Corbeau seats, it's a velcro flap:

This is the underside of the seat exposed. You will need to get the bladder between the pad and the springs:

On the Corbeau CR-1, you can lift up the seat-cushion a little bit and gain access to where you need to get the bladder:

Here, I am sliding the bladder into its new home from the gap in the seat-cushion. It's a tight fit so work carefully. You don't want to rip the nipple off the bladder:

Continue working the bladder into place from below to help guide it. Don't forget to gently pull the connector through:

Once into place, use zip-ties and the pre-existing slots in the bladder to secure it into place:

There is also room to mount the module to the underside of the springs using zipties:

Notice the springs are recessed up into the bottom so the module doesn't hang down much:

connect whatever sensors you can and dress the cables carefully with zip-ties:

close the flap over the module with the two sensors sticking out towards the seatbelt side:

replace the rails, routing the seatbelt sensor and plugging it in such that it won't hang on anything when you slide the seat back and forth:

Now you can reinstall the seat back into the car. You'll need to substitute a 3-ohm resistor for the airbag connector and then just plug the remaining connector from the module into the matching one in the car. Once reinstalled, you can test the operation by starting the car and leaning over onto the passenger seat and putting your weight on the cushion - watch the light in the clock assembly to ensure operation. It should go to ON once you have put some pressure on the cushion (and bladder).

but thank YOU for figuring out how to get the occupant detection out of the stock seat :)

Is there a way to trick teh light to stay "on" with a resistor? if so what size? 3.3ohms?
| nhluhr | 10-30-2006 11:35 PM |
3 ohms is the resistor to fool the airbag system when you simply unplug/remove an airbag. I know of no way to trick the system for removing the occupant detection system.
| TRooper | 10-30-2006 11:43 PM |
^There probally is, but being that it is a "smart" airbag system, the computer wants to do more than simply activate the airbag. It not only wants to deploy it when neccessary but it wants to know how hard to deploy it. I am sure if you take some ohm readings while sitting on the seat, you can figure out the proper resistance needed and use the corresponding resistor to keep the bag on full deployment. But this raises more questions. What would the resistor have to replace? Would it replace the gel-filled load sensor only, could you rig it to replace the load sensor & load sensor computer all together.

Good info from all. Unfortunately I don't think the Sparco Evo seats would allow for the use of the bladder, although with some work it might be possible.
Question 1: Where'd you get the resistors for the side airbag plugs, and exactly what ones do I need to get?
Question 2: If you still have the passenger airbag sensor disconnected, but have the resistors in for the side airbags, does the the dash airbag light go off? If not, I wonder if I coud just stuff the sensor under the seat so it's connected?
Too many sensors. I should have gotten an '05.
Thanks guys.

i really don't mind seeing the airbag light, but is there anything else to be concerned about.
and when you are using the resistor is that tricking the car into thinking that there is an airbag there and it turns off the airbag light correct?

i have a question for the drivers seat. where is the drivers seat position sensor? if it runs next to the seatbelt one and goes through the back of the seat how do i remove it? its the last one before my airbag light turns off.

Driverside (DS) rail position sensor is fixed to the bottom of the seat. It surrounds the rail. You can unbolt from the stock seat and secure it to the underside of the Bride or zip tie it out of the way. I am not aware of anyone who has made this functional on an aftermarket seat. I recently switched to a 06 USDM base with my JDM DS seat, thus I was just able to clip it into the factory spot. The only way I could see the DS rail sensor needing to be functional is if the driver is very short. You can look at the factory rail and notice that the sensor will only become closed or "triggered" when the seat is slid extremely close to the wheel.
thats ****ing retarded
I think it's a good idea to NOT deploy the airbags when the system detects a fault.
For one, airbags are extremely expensive and secondly they are extremely powerful. Deploying them to an occupant that is sitting much lower than they would on stock seats could be very dangerous. It's called a "failsafe".

I just completed this mod with some NRG Carbon Fiber bucket seats. They don't have the springs like these and are not adjustable back seats. I used some velcro on both sides of the bladder to attach to the seat, and the seat cusions. There is a handle hole in the bottom of the seat where I routed the wiring below the seat.
So if you got some bucket seats, as long as there is a hole in the bottom of the seat, you should be good to go!

No, you could remove the detection system if you want. Save about 2 lbs!

There are 2 clips that have little tabs with arrows on them, i pushed them down and disconnected no prob. but there is one other clip with no visible arrows, and I dont want to attempt to force it and break something, Any other 06+ drivers out there that have removed there psgr seat able to offer any advice? thanks in advance!
quick questions, do 04 STi have such "bladders" in the driver's or passenger's seat? Or is this a 06+ models only? Thanks.
Looking to swap EVO recaros into my 04, anything needs to be transferred over from my OEM seats besides the seatbelt clip?
The 04 STi does not have the bladder in question. This is for 06+ only.

The Driver side rail position sensor needs to be plugged in, but does not need to be attached to the rail. If you are still getting a light, there is an error somewhere else in your system.

....and the correct resistor needed for the drivers and pass seat air bag delete would be a 3.3 ohm 1/2 watt resistor?????? All of my modules and sensors are plugged in and initially i had a 2.2 ohm resistor in each connector....still had the airbag light. now i have a 3.3 ohm 5 watt resistor in each connector and still have the light. I know 5 watt is a little big, but i thought it would work.

The wattage rating refers to how much power it CAN handle so bigger won't hurt you.
If you are sure all your resistors are of the correct rating, you need to check the other connectors to make sure appropriate simulation or replacement is made. The driver's seat position sensor, seatbelt latch sensors, the passenger detection module, etc.

So i guess im gonna try a 3 ohm resistor......see what happens.

Just did the Passenger Sensor swap via this guide. Much easier than I anticipated ~ I <3 my new JDM STi V7 seats :)

Glad to help Subie Blue GD. The V7's are fantastic seats and a huge improvement over the USDM STi seats.

I'm not sure what version mine are, but I got the black seats a few weeks ago :)

Does anyone know what the actual weight limit for the sensor is? I need some published (online is ok) documentation that states a number for one of my managers at work.

Bumping this as I just did my Evo Recaros in the STI. These instructions worked very well. Thank you! The one issue I had was the passenger bladder itself in the Evo seat. I had to turn it sideways to get it under the cushion. But it still works regardless.
Also I didnt have any 3 or 3.3ohm resisters so I soldered 3 11.1ohm resisters in parallel and got he same results.

I did this recently, it was a bit of a pain trying to get the bladder into the recaro's but it works. Also trying to drill those rivets out are a pain, they like to spin while you are drilling them, so you have to hold them with a pair of pliers while drilling them out.

Chris just realized you did this write up last year..it was very useful with my Aftermarket seat install. Thanks!

The Driver side rail position sensor needs to be plugged in, but does not need to be attached to the rail. If you are still getting a light, there is an error somewhere else in your system.
In addition to this.. as you can figure, the Positioning Sensor functions the way it's named. the further away you sit from the steering wheel the harder the airbag will deploy and the closer you sit the softer it will deploy.
so yes the sensor needs to be plugged in to make the system happy by not throwing the "Airbag" light. now by not attaching the sensor to the rail..or not tricking it when installing an aftermarket seat, the system's default will tell the airbag to deploy at it's max or close to it.
now the danger in this, is that if you are short or sit close to the steering and you get into a collision that'll set off the airbag..be prepared to get knocked da fcuk out! if you are tall..you won't have to really worry.
wut i did was trick the sensor by making it deploy at it's softest setting..since i'm not that tall. by doing that i had custom fab a metal bracket that sits between the magnetic sensor at all times. sorry i do not have a pic to show you but the sensor is easy to spot out and easy to figure out how it works just by looking at it.

i will be swapping out 02 wrx seats for 06 sti seats. i will be removing the bladders/module from the 06 sti seats assuming my harness won't support it anyway..
since my 02 is not eqipped with SMART air bags my question is this.
my 02 harness will only have air bag leads for the side curtain airbags correct? so that being said will they clip right up to the side airbags of the 06 sti seats? plug and play? to be more clear are the side curtain air bags for 02 the same part # as the side curtain airbags for the 06 sti. or somehow different? i don't want to devalue the 02 wrx seats by removing the airbags but will if it makes it somehow easier.

Its a direct plug in for your 02 WRX. All airbags will remain functional. This write up is for owners of 06/07 vehicles.

do not take the sti seats apart
there is NO NEED!!!!
just unplug the 02 seats and plug in the 06 seats and leave the unused plugs on the 06 seat alone
PLEASE

yeah this tutorial is ONLY for people who need to make their Airbag system work again because they are using nonstandard seats in their 06+ cars!
don't tear up 06 seats if you don't have to! it will destroy their resale value.

This was a awesome thread. Well I want to put in Sparco EVO seats cuz they look tight but i dont like the airbag system to be turned off.
| TRooper | 10-24-2008 01:50 PM |
Your airbag system WILL NOT be turned off. This tutorial is to make the airbag system functional when using non stock seats. The Evo seats will be a great alternative to STi seats.
