and now for something totally different......

KC & Jason,

While in grid, I noticed one item on both your cars that should be corrected, to avoid future protests. Both your cars have gaping holes in the fenderwells, where you removed the stock airbox. If one of the other top competitors had decided to be a jerk, this may have resulted in a successful protest. The fix is simply slap some duct tape over the holes (a la Mr. Hoppe's lovely fenderwell fix:p ). There is also a more elegant fix - I seem to recall mention of some plugs from the RS that fit the holes perfectly.

-Steve
KC 09-16-2003 09:54 AM

By removal of the airbox, (intake is free) that hole was exposed.

That hole is there from the factory and the plug from the RS is not legal for update/backdate.

--kC
Patrick L 09-16-2003 09:56 AM

Explain why that is not legal?

BTW, great driving everyone and you too KC and Tom, you suck. :p
He beat me out for the last trophy spot. :D
My car's alingment was setup more for the dry. Friday was fun, Thrusday was not, for me.
I want to thank [emailprotected] for his support in the little things he did for me that helped. I wil most likey be back in STS next year unless something else comes up.;)

--kC
My bad. After looking at the rules again, it may actually be illegal to cover the holes with anything!

Looks like we've found your secret...all that extra airflow from the holes in your fenderwell HAS to be worth a couple seconds!
KC 09-16-2003 10:48 AM

It's not legal because the rules don't say any exposed holes can be covered. :)

Although it would be legal if your cold air intake kit came with parts to cover the holes, since intakes are "free" and you're re-using the holes from the OEM intake.

I was in heat 5, and was able to see some of the STX class runs. Thursday was less-than-ideal conditions but I suppose the mark of a champion is that he can run truly excellent in any condition set forth! Congrats to all who competed!

In heat 5 we had 2 runs before the rain started. I was waiting in grid for my 3rd run when it really let loose and everyone outside ran for cover. I thought all the DSL drivers took our 3rd runs, but the results show times for only Patty and I, at 78.9xx seconds, what a laugh. I could barely see where the course went, had to keep stabbing the brakes to find my way and to see through the sheets of water on the windshield. That 3rd run was a water-cross, it was literally a sea of cones, and after I was done & watching other drivers we saw some of the cones moving, floating on the flash floods.

Still, the event was too much fun. Hope to meet some of you next year.
adhowe70 09-16-2003 10:06 PM

I was also in Heat 5... It was a blast! I managed to get around in 77.7xx as a 2nd driver in G Stock but it wasn't easy. At least now I know the limits of 4/32nds Ecsta V700's in the full wet. And I have to say it wasn't that bad.

I know Annie Bauer took her 3rd run, but it was scored a DNF. I know several G Stock drivers had DNF runs because they couldn't see where the course went.

10th Warrior 09-17-2003 12:54 PM

all i can say is it better rain for all of GS's runs next year  Good job Andrew. I'm also glad to see Carpenter take it to those pesky Celicas :)
adhowe70 09-17-2003 11:47 PM

We're going to jump ship in 2004. More than likely, we'll be campaigning a Honda product. Either our RSX-S in G Stock or an S2000 in B Stock. We're leaning pretty heavily towards an S2000 right now.

If we get ambitious, we might campaign a Boxster in B Stock or wait for an Elise to run in ASP.

It looks like theres a decent chance our car will still be active, though. My wife's codriver, Kala, really enjoyed the car and wants to drive it some more. If the contingency is still there next year and she wants to drive it, I'll prep it for her. Anyone else want to be GS fodder in a renal car? :D

For the record, between the Subaru money, the co-driver deals and the Kuhmo money that my wife won, we pocketed $1125 for the trip. I'd call that almost breaking even.

Andrew
Corey 09-18-2003 07:59 AM

I was actually meaning to ask some people. How do we get this Subaru contingency money? All 3 drivers in my car should be getting checks...

Call them and make sure that they have the amounts right and don't screw it up. They take a VERY long time to get stuff out to you.

no joke. i'm still waiting on mine from the topeka pro. the kumho check is already in the bank :)
Draken 09-18-2003 11:07 AM

Last year...it took until January before i got my Pro money for being highest placed Subie in the challenge championship. It only occured, after I called Steve Johnson (who actually answered the phone.) I e-mailed him the 5 unanswered e-mails that were sent to Howard, Tasha, and the lady responsible for the money payouts.

Kinda a pain...but at least i got it. The kumho money always came quickly...

Weird. I think Chris was talking about his placing in this challenge:

KC 09-18-2003 03:29 PM

Chris Hartman wasn't the top finishing Subaru in the Finale (that was indeed Tom) so therefore Tom was teh Winn4r of the event and top Subaru earning teh bling from the event intself.

HOWEVER,

Subaru may have also paid out to top Subaru at year end too. :)

Here was the 2002 ProSolo Contingency:

Pro Solo National Series:
-------------------------------
Payouts will be made to the top finishing Subaru drivers in the Open Challenge. In case of a tie, relative qualifying positions will determine the award winners.

Awards:
First Subaru $500
Second Subaru $300
Third Subaru $200

Pro Solo Year End:
-----------------------
Awards will be presented to the top finishing Subaru drivers in the Open Challenge Championship. A driver must have entered in and competed in a Subaru product in all qualifying Championship events.

Awards:
Class Champion (10 classes) $500
Overall Pro Solo Champion $500

Chris... did you get lucky?

Indeed. Subaru contingecies rock! I hope I can actually make it to some nat'l events again next season so I can get in on them too (assuming they keep paying out to us lowly GC8s ;) )

It was the year-end dealio. I sucked ass in the finale. But i managed to get top Subie points in the overal super challenge points standings for year-end.

Chris H.
That's cool. That must be the 'ProSolo Champion' payout then. :)

If that is the case, then Tom might have another $500 coming at him for being the top Subaru in points at year end. Heck just that one win in Oscoda would have been enough! :D

--KC
Draken 09-18-2003 05:27 PM

unfortunately, i noticed the wording was changed for this year...probably because of me ;)

It use to read something like "top finishing Subaru in the overall challenge year-end points blah, blah, blah." now, it reads that you need to be the year end super challenge champion.

that is a pretty big difference.

Next year...I'm going to go after the lucrative Fiat and Nankang tire contigency payouts. Talk about cash...

trhoppe 09-18-2003 11:03 PM

No, I was talking about year end last year as well. In the list that you have here, they ommited my Peru points from last year where I reached the quarters or semis. That gave me enough points so that I was tied with you at the end of last year, but because I made the finale challenge and you didn't I took the tiebreaker. The web page points from last year were and are wrong.

The wording hasn't changed since last year either. It said the same thing, but they stilled payed out for highest subaru in the overall challenge just like they will this year..... :)

Also interesting to see (related to the driving tip discussion in another thread) how Keith is exactly on the cone in the picture above. My picture at that point shows me about a mile from the same cone. :o
trhoppe 09-29-2003 02:42 AM

You know, looking at those I was seeing the same exact thing. Look at me on that cone. I did NOT hit that cone on that run :)

What heats should I look at?
TheWRX 09-29-2003 12:10 PM

STX ran heat 4. North course on Thursday, South on Friday.

Yes, Tom, you're also nicely aimed at the cone! There were a bunch of other cars who look to be on the perfect line. I wouldn't be surprised if most of them were the cars running fast times.
thechickencow 09-29-2003 12:11 PM

I think I broke it.

off camber and 40mph. You aim FOR the cone and the car will slide *right* past it.

At least thats what I was doing :)

Slip angles baby
-Tom
KC 09-29-2003 01:57 PM

That corner.... downhill, off camber away, braking hard, and you're turned in much sooner than those pics show due to depth of field, and being of all things.. a still picture. I have video of STS running that corner... and the game on that one was getting your rear around that cone ASAP.

Sure there's slip angles, but I don't think that we were going 40 in that pic. 20-25 maybe. (At least that's what I think I was doing)...

The part that you don't see is what the 'rear' of the car is doing (rotating, and pulling the car away from the cone too). If you think this is bad, try winter rally-x in the snow... you're turing WELL before the cone. ;)

Here's another pic of what slip angles are like... sure the ground it wet... but look at my steering wheel position and how deep the wheel (pass side) is turned already... just 1/2 along that wall... and what 6"-8" off the cones? I was going low-mid 2nd gear there chanting during the whole run... "keep it clean!" :D
