nice job KC and Billy :D

apparently some joker snuck a cone magnet into my car for the weekend, so i didn't do as well as i would have liked ;) however, at least the two subarus in GS weren't last. 6 & 7th. top 4 were celicas to some degree. 5th was my old nemisis Rich Wise in the SCX, until it broke and he finished out in my scoob. it was fun watching him flog my car :D

HUGE thanks to Andrew Howe for the wheel stud!!!!! it was great to meet you guys finally!!

Good luck to everyone who is still in topeka!
zosima 09-08-2003 12:39 PM

Excellent work KC! Wagon owners everywhere are proud :). Now its time to do the same thing in SoloII.

Now the secrets come out!

So is this also vindication of the 2nd gear left-foot braking technique:)

CONGRATS to Steve Sulatycki for his 17th place finish in DSP, only 4/10ths out of the trophies!!!! not bad for an ITE car :D and also the top finishing subaru in class  i smell a trip to Baby Dolls with all that subaru money

All I want to know is who is Erik Eston who placed 8th in HS in a '00 Impreza 2.2L? on Michelin tires? His second course time was the 5th fastest in the class...

Two local guys from my region won titles so far. ES (Jeff Cashmore) and CP (Darrel Padberg). Jeff won the class by over 1 second and if he hadn't coned on one run he would have had the 6 fastest runs in the class period.

Erik races with the two local clubs here in Akron. He's very fast, and repeatedly spanks my G Stock times. Not sure what tires he was on at Nat's though. More here... http://www.soloracer.com/eeston.html
zzyzx 09-11-2003 01:19 PM

Thanks, Jeff!

Talk about crazy fast competition!

Actually, I was 0.316 out of trophies, or 0.158 per course.

I was 11th going into the second day, and the trophy was mine to lose - which I did, unfortunately.

For some reason, I could not figure out the South course. As always, the North course rocked and the South course sucked. I wonder why it always ends up that way...

My RS runs like a dream right now and is certainly faster than I am. Already planning the mods for next year, though... :)

god is punishing me for not going :( it seems to be raining today, the first day of GS competion :( arrrrgghhh i wish i was there :furious: on an aside, two of my friends from stl are in the trophies in DS (in an ITR)
Dussander 09-11-2003 03:56 PM

Yeah, I'm thinking the Subarus are going to win in STX now that it has rained for the first day unless it dries up too much before they get to run. Tom claims to not be that good in the rain so KC may pull ahead on day one.
I'm bummed I couldn't go, but I was REALLY needed at work this week, so it was probably a good thing that I didn't attempt to go.
Peaty 09-11-2003 04:10 PM

It's been raining here in Topeka pretty much all day here since around 7:30AM ;)
10th Warrior 09-11-2003 04:39 PM

go Heather Howe!!! 4th in GSL and in the trophies after day one :D
Dussander 09-11-2003 04:44 PM

Neal Tovsen seems to be doing well in SM, even though he is driving a Volkswagen.

go KC go!!
dwx 09-11-2003 09:58 PM

Only the first day but I'd like to see a 1-2-3 WRX swap in STX. Kick that Mini out of there. :)

Rain changes EVERYTHING, considering last years champ (Jeff Brown) is sitting in 29th. Some can drive well in the rain and others can't, all depends on experience.

For instance take SM class where the guy in 3rd place, Chris Raglin, is driving a Civic which probably has about $5k total into it including the car. I know from driving against him at divisionals that there is no way in hell he should be beating most of those guys. If it was dry, Bob Tunnell would likely be killing everyone, but he's sitting in 10th place, almost 2 seconds out of the lead.

The top AS STi is dave bruener a local guy here and is also on the board, as dave bruener. He placed 12th in STS last year in a 2.5RS. He's had the STi for all of a month I think and has done 2 autocrosses in it.
rosss 09-11-2003 10:01 PM

Go Heather! Great to see a fellow Oregon Region subie racer in the trophies.

Good luck also to the other three Oregon drivers in that car -- Kala Rounds, Andy Howe, and Michael Gatza.

Did anybody notice the four STi's in AStock? I didn't think there'd be that many, and at least one is in the trophies as of tonight. Anad an EVO is in 3rd! Zowie.

Good luck to everybody tomorrow!

What I am waiting to see is the ESP times for the EVO...
KC 09-11-2003 10:24 PM

STX
Run 1 was on wet ground with puddles and standing water
Run 2 was on drying ground and less puddles with standing water
Run 3 was on almost dry ground with less puddles and standing water on the far part of the course.

Meade and Brown are listed in an IT-R, but Todd brought out the Si for them to drive, not the IT-R... which there's only one IT-R now in the class.

My front tires are my Azenis which I ran at the beginning of 2002 up to the Peru Pro (More tread) . My rear tires are the tires that I got for last years Peru Pro. (and the other two are in the paddock).

Yes, I didn't buy any new tires for this year. ;) My wife isn't happy that the tire budget wasn't touched... because I can buy 2 sets next year. :D

Good running by everyone, but weather was a factor in the results. A bigger thing is the tire choice for that weather. One thing we found out? The KDs are NOT the tire for the wet.

Tomorrows another day. It's going to be very interesting to say the least. Positions will be changed.

Some solo2 cars are very well presented,
with distinctive touches.

How many smurf blue wrx's or spa yellow s2000's
are there ? It's good to be distictive.

I liked this one:

which Si? The red '91 or black '02???

I see that 5th heat was called off due to weather after their 2nd runs.
KC 09-12-2003 07:21 AM

The red one.

Yes, after 4th heat, it started to rain right when impound for us was complete... and many got the hell outta Dodge. ;)

I heard they cancelled the running, going to be interesting to see where they pick things up today.

--kC
trhoppe 09-12-2003 08:10 AM

Yup, the KDs are NOT the tire for rainy/drying conditions.

I got shafted as I was the 1st car out in STX and the conditions were drying, so I had the 3 wettest runs out of the 43 STX cars.

My fastest run on the KDs was a 66.7. Kiko ran his 64.x and 65.x on the SO3s and switched to the KDs for the last run. He ran a nice 68.0. The only other KD car out there was fitzpatrick in the E30 M3. 68.x........

I guess next year I will be on azenis if its wet/cold/not super hot. Just a stupid mistake that cost the whole damn season.....

Great job KC and bring it home today!!!!

MattN 09-12-2003 10:10 AM

Tom, I should have told you about the KDs in the wet. I was less than .2 off of West in the "[emailprotected]" running on year old Azenis'. I should never be that close to a Suby (especially *that* one) in the rain. I was just stunned at how well the Azenis did in the very wet.

KDWs, perhaps???? Of course, then your tire budget just blew way past $1000. And you may never use them.

Matt
Dussander 09-12-2003 11:27 AM
The KDs are NOT the tire for the wet.
I have been saying this for a LONG time. For the wet I'd run Falken's or S-03s (have not tried).

BFGs just do not like cold at all. They need to be hot. Also, the tread sucks for standing water. I realize most of you know this, I thought I would just clarify for noobs. ;)
Draken 09-12-2003 03:27 PM

Toyos
We've had fairly good luck with Toyo T1-S in wet conditions. If I were running my Subie in STX, i would have Azenis for dry and Toyo T1-s street tires that could run in the wet.

Good job to everyone! I wish i could have been there.

Anybody onsite know the results for SM?

Neal Tovsen, who was in 2nd yesterday!, is NASIOC member SUV-ETR. His "race" car is a VW G60 powered 1977 Scirocco, wondering if he pulled off the win???

Neal fell back a bit. I didn't catch the final results, but the BMW's absolutely DOMINATED today. I believe Reitmeir ended up winning. However, Bob Tunnell's last run was unbelievable - he smoked everyone by like .6 (too bad he gave up so much time yesterday...)
MNbiker 09-12-2003 07:05 PM

Big news for Suby lovers.....

Keith Casey brought home the win in STX!

Courtney Cormier was second in a Mini Cooper S, and Billy Brooks was 3rd in borrowed WRX (Jason Wong's car).

Way to go Keith & Billy!!!

There were a bunch of Suby's in the mix - I won't try to list them, as I'm sure I'd miss someone. The complete results should be posted soon here:

Wooohooo! My last post was a prediction.. yeah... thats it. Okay, so I am a novice and didn't actually understand the event was run across 2 days. Anyways, my "Mr. September" statement stands :) Excellent work KC!!! Wagons Rule.
trhoppe 09-12-2003 07:39 PM

Yup, good job KC!

I came in 3rd fastest raw time today after screwing up my 3rd run and going slower on it. I was a little under 2 tenths behind KC and a tenth behind fitzpatrick. It was enough to move me 14 spots into the last trophy spot.

Oh how different would things have been if my dumbass either had azenis or it stayed dried both days........

btw my azenis are on order and should be here middle of next week

Is it just me or did scca.org die? Everyone assumed Tunnell was going to wipe the floor with everyone in SM, which would have happened if not for the weather. His time in BSP (SM legal) last year would have won SM.

Anyone know how Dave Bruener did in AS? Did he manage to hold on or did he get passed up by the Vettes?

I suggest that we rename KC to Fast Bastard.

Congratulations, great driving!

I had one short moment of hope during the very first run. I just heard that Tom came in with a 69 and one of my regular local rivals with a 72 before I went to the start line. Then I drove a totally crappy run (almost got lost on course)... and had a 69 myself. Well, reality set in soon enough! I wanted to do better, and missed most of my personal goals. But at least I was there, and gave it my best. I'll be coming back with a vengeance next year! ;)

What happened to all the protesting that was suppose to go down? :)

KC, you want to do us a big favor? Post your setup and evaluate the value of each part. I know you have/had your setup on your web page, but how you rate each part could be informative. Feel free to put it all on your web page if you need the hits. :D

Does Billy Brooks post on this board? I'm curious about his setup as well.

Looks like Courtney learned to drive Richards car better then Richard did. Makes sense considering Courtney has been driving that think sense Ft. Myers.

So, for whoever was there, how do you think it would have panned out if it was dry both days? Do you think the Cooper S or BMW is the better car for the class in the dry?

Kiko, I guess you decided to get that tranny fixed? Are you going to stick with the WRX for a while or do you still plan on getting an Evo?

Joel, PM me or post here on how your week went. What worked and what didn't on the car?
MNbiker 09-14-2003 11:51 PM

I'll let KC speak to his car setup. One comment though - I think KC could have won in half the cars on grid last week. He's really been in a zone of late.

Billy's driving was also pretty amazing, as he was co-driving Jason Wong's WRX, not his own RS. Jason's car is well prepped, but not really optimized for autox.

I don't think a dry Thursday would have helped the Mini's. The North Course (Thursday) was very WRX-friendly, wet or dry. The big losers in the rain were the cars on BFG tires. The South Course (Friday) seemed to be ideal for the BMW's, and they got a perfect day to run. With a dry two days, I think the biggest changes in the overall standings would have been Tom Hoppe and Brian Fitzpatrick moving into in the top 5.

-Steve
bbimpreza 09-15-2003 07:17 AM

Congratulations to Keith once again. He drove amazingly this last week and deserves winning both at the Pro and Nationals. Concerning the setup of Jason's car, he is running Tein RAs with 7kg springs in front and 6kg springs in back. He also has a front strut tower bar and cusco swaybars front and rear. As for the engine, he has a Blitz intake (new item), uppipe, and a JIC Magic catback. We were not able to get the downpipe and Greddy E-manage finished in time. It was only the second time that I have driven/raced the car and there is still some things that need to be changed for next year. The cusco front sway bar is not needed in my eyes, it causes the car to push too much. We are going to try and solve that problem with higher spring rates, similar to what KC and Tom are running. I definitely had a lot of fun running with the STX crowd at Nationals, more so than running with STS would have been, and hope that you will let me run with you guys again next year.

Hey hey hey now! We had some fun too, even if I got my butt kicked all week long.

The best I could manage was a 15th place finish out of 53. That's right, 14 trophies and I am in the hard luck spot.

The south course was great for the RS, and I should have done better on Tuesday. The North course was pretty open for me to do much. I ran as good of a run as I had in me and it wasn't enough.

I wish I could have seen STX run. Congrats on the win KC!

I had a great time all week and look forward to seeing you all again (Ft. Meyers?)

Corey #89 STS
KC 09-15-2003 08:34 AM

Well, I'm at work, so I finally have time to post (got in last night).

Thanks ppl. I can't believe it happened. I'll be doing a separate writeup on the event itself in a little while.

But to answer the setup question....

1st and formost, the thing that made the largest difference is suspension. I have a different setup than most other autoxed WRXs out there, and probably even more so than most wagons.

I'm running Tein RAs with 8k(448lb) springs in the front and 10k(560lb) springs in the rear. With the 'extra' weight of the wagon being behind the rear axles and up high, some people suggested a higher spring rate might help controlling that weight transfer... and turn it into an advantage in rotating the wagon.

Well whadda ya know? It worked! I'm willing to bet you will not get the same controllable results with these rear rates in the sedan. Maybe, maybe not. No way of telling until Nationals next year, or unless you run on that surface. You see, Topeka concrete is unlike any other surface you can race on. It's sorta bumpy, sorta smooth at times, could be grippy in one section more than another, and it has yumps that you need to brake before hitting or you'll miss your turn in point. ;)

I worked all year trying to tune the car for the past week.

Ok, on to the next most important thing. The driver. (Maybe this one should have been 1st, it's just as important). A few years ago when I started getting really competitive in Solo with national events I used to concentrate on winning and I'd hear people say "Oh I'm just here to have fun." That used to piss me off. I mean, this is the big show! It's competition! This year... or the end of last year... I got it. It's not about the winning. It's only something you can figure out for yourself, in your head. "Just for fun", to me, means.

1) Don't pay attention to the times that you need to beat. Removing that "Gotta beat their time" distraction will help you concentrate more on what YOU need to do which is:

2) Just go out and run the best that you can. Who cares if you come in 1st or last, that you hit a cone? Braked late/early? If you showed up, made the trip out, you did something that others for different reasons couldn't or didn't want to do.

3) Don't let a bad turn on the course get to you when you're out there. While you're driving, and you brake a little too late and push, just forget it and concentrate on the line you need to be on for the rest of the course. (There's plenty of time after the run to reflect on the course). I felt I was getting everything right, and I exited the slalom a little too hot and was off balance, and I pushed FAR into a corner that I needed to be tight on. Well, I can't change the past (the push) so I just concentrated on my line I needed to be on. I came through the finish... two tenths faster.... being my fastest run (and last one too). Sure, I can now say/lament/thinbk about what happened on that one corner that slowed me down, but when I was out there, I didn't let that one bad corner get to me DURING my run or it may not have been my fastest run. Funny how that works.

So to sum that one up... think positive thoughts. Think about what YOU need to do to get the job done.

Hmm... what else... the power added through the exhaust didn't hurt. Funny thing happened last week. We found out something that amazed almost everyone... The stock ECU is good for the HP over Unichip or ECUTECK. I'm running a Stock ECU and I was only making about 2-4 hp less than those running a chip. Tom hooked up the datalogger and we pulled some 2nd gear pulls in a variety of WRXs in various states of tune. The numbers shown on that showed we were all practically equal.

Anything else you want to know about the car?

Oh, one more thing... I was running the Azenis that my co-driver for the Peru Ppro LAST YEAR bought for the car. The tires on the car that I ran were over 1 year old. :)

Thanks for the congrats everyone. I'll be writing something long winded about the event itself soon.

Tim and all, that is definitely what this sport is about, and Freds a great example of how
many autocrosser volunteer to help people in trouble. There have been several National events
where Ive seen people get someone to drive their trailered cars home so they can trailer a
disabled car of a competitor back for them.

My experience this year was during the Nationals where a top competitor began fuel starving on his
second run and needed gas. We gave him the gas he needed, and that was the gas that gave him his
best run, jumping in front of me in the trophies J

Meanwhile, we ran out of ice water to cool the tires and intercooler (a big deal in the ST
classes). Keith Casey, who had pretty much already won, had gotten doused with ice water. He
began wringing his shirt out over the intercooler, while two other top competitors brought over
their sprayers to hit our tires.

These are the kind of things that make me realize it would be hard to ever stop competing with
these kind of people. This is definitely a "Shirt of your back" kind of competition.

Yeah, I got doused with freaking FREEZING water (it had ice in it for chirssakes). My voice went up 3 octaves when I tried to scream. :D

Bastards (You know who you are). Payback is a beotch.

Brians a great guy. One comment I'd like to say is I tried staving off any celebration because the runs weren't done yet and the fat lady hadn't sung. I would hate (hated) to be that guy doing the last runs to see them celebrating the winner BEFORE I even had a last shot at winning. Guys? Next year... wait. It's called something like sportsmanship. When Brian needed water, I ran to my gridspot and grabbed my watersprayer... wait.... it's empty. Doh! Run back and started wringing out my shirt. Every little bit that I could get out of it. I also needed gas, and someone (solo-x/Nate) went combing the paddock trying to find it. I also lent some of this borrowed gas to Brian Mettuchi in his BMW.

One thing is for certain (you'll see in the writeup)... I'll take cold water over Champaigne anyday. :D

As far as the waiting thing....we didn't hear that brian had a rerun until after we did that......I don't think he ever took one either though did he??

I hope that STX is a class next year....as tempting as the AS ride might be for next year, if we ARE a class, I think I will stay in STX....if we aren't though, STi here I come :)

I have a question for anyone qualified to answer.

I have only been participating in solo II for less than a year and have been wondered something.

What can someone expect after a National win like KC has just experienced?

How does the rest of the racing world look at a Solo II National Champion?

Are there sponsorship opportunities, endorsements, etc?

Just Curious,

Scott

And congradulations on you victory KC!!

Congrats KC. You drove like a champ all week and deserved the victory.

I had a blast in Topeka and thoroughly enjoyed meeting you all and racing against ya. There were some great drivers in STX and some great guys in general. If STX is around next year, count me in. Hopefully in a slightly faster car.

Oh yeah.... this was weird...

My wife and I were driving home, somewhere in KS or Missouri and it was raining... but it was a full moon and morning at the same time...

I figured that since you showed your ass to the rest of STX on Thursday and Friday, I'd just return the favor...

Hope I didn't cause your wife to puke or anything :p
