That's ok, I'm wondering when the protest on Shenefield's Civic Si will happen...

Last I checked, '06 Civic Si's had torque-sensing front differentials, like the Integra Type-R has, which is a 1-way ticket to STX.

Over on SCCA forums, chris talks about his Nationals plans. I believe that 2006 Civic was intended for G-Stock competition. He decided to get a co-drive with someone in STS. So chalk the "2006 Civic" reference to forgetting to update his registration.

Just a minor clarification -- no wood in the trophies this year. They're made of granite or something. Quite heavy, and the base has fairly sharp wedge-shaped corners. Could be used as a weapon, or at least that's what the guy at airport security explained to me when I got busted for having mine in my carry-on bag. He let me take it, but told me not to try carrying it on again.

I just wanted to say that I was glad to meet as many people as I did, out there, and a pleasure to run with the STX group. If I didn't introduce myself to all of the subie community, I'll try harder next year.:D

Definetly a blast for me, and a great learning experience. Oh yeah I'll be back..........afterall I need redemption.
AUTOwrXER 09-28-2006 07:09 PM

Looks like J-Rho is at the top of the revised STS results that were posted a short time ago. I guess there was a "compliance" issue.
AUTOwrXER 09-28-2006 07:12 PM

Also, it looks like Pat Lipsinic is kicking some ass in DSP on the east course. He is only 3 tenths back from the lead with the (rumored) Subie-friendly West course ahead of him!
Draken 09-28-2006 07:22 PM

I saw that! Way to go Pat. My teammate wasn't that far off Toby Larson (E36) with his medium prep DSP 2.5RS at Packwood, so I figured Pat would trophy.

If the BMWs do get the boot, DSP should be interesting next year.

Also, EP is kinda cool. Hart 2006 Civic, CRX, RX3. What diversity.
Hey all,

Peaty's link has several pics of Branden's STU car and I though some of y'all might know what was up with it.

There is 1 pic of it sitting still at the line, and you can clearly see those are STi OEM BBS wheels on the car.

His car is registered as an '04 STi, so did Branden...

A) Win on 17x7.5 OEM '04 wheels with 225 Yokes

B) Win on the 17x7.5 OEM '04 wheels with 245 Yokes crammed onto them

C) Have the hub bearings upgraded to '05 ones (legality?) and use the '05/'06 17x8 OEM wheels, on which 245 Yokes make more sense...

???

I'm not meaning to take anything away or muddy up Branden's win. I'm just curious about the winning setup.

(and to think, I was told that my 8.5 wheels weren't wide enough for STU and that 9's were going to be the ticket...)

Thanks,
Mike
I was wondering how long it would be until somebody would suggest some way that I could possibly cheat. I kept the stock rims because I knew that fat rims aren't going to win. My opinion is that the cost of them isn't worth the slight performance gain for the dollars spent if you're on a very TIGHT budget like I was this year. Rest assured, if I market myself appropriately and get some sponsor cash for '07, i'll prepare the car further with more weight reduction, and probly some bling for rims. I'll only go to a 8.5" rim though.

I want to congratulate Terry Fair for 2nd, and Mike Simanyi for 3rd, as well as all STU trophy winners, and competitors. Thanks to all of you, we've gotten the National recognition that we were wanting for '07. The Bimmers did VERY well this year, far better than I thought they could possibly do on the HPT surface. But on my first run out feeling the grip levels I knew that things were going to be different. Hope to see all STU competitors next year and then some. Now that we're a National Class I think we'll see even more great drivers next year.

I achieved everything that I wanted to at Nationals this year so i'm happy, and I had a great time, and I was even more happy that weather had nothing to do with the results as they are today. No wet runs that give the upper hand to one make of car over another. Once again, i'm stuck keeping the car another year when I was considering trading up and going with something else.

Same here, a pleasure to meet everyone that I got to meet. Would have liked to got around some more during my first time down there but some D/E Mod 'issues' kept all of us in the IA Region camp pretty busy.

x2 on the redemption. Flat out choking on the east course and screwing up a different part of the same section (U turn at the far end) resulted in me getting beat by the B/F stock guys from home that I usually hang with by 4-6 seconds :(

Oh well, didn't finish last at my first Nat'ls, guess I can't complain too much. See everyone next year :)

As I said, I wasn't meaning to suggest you did any such thing... It's not like the larger wheel bearings would have gotten you anything anyway.

I just noticed those were OEM wheels on an '04 car, and it seemed small for the size of tire we run.

Congrats on your win. You certainly deserved it.

thanks for the pictures Peaty. Awesome shots (especially this one http://peatpics.com/gallery2/main.php/v/car-pics/2006_Nats/DSC_9918e.jpg.html )

I'm pretty darn happy with the last trophy spot in STU. I know it not a subaru, but it's still a respectable car. I normally race my 04 WRX in STX but it's been having issues and Russ (126 STU) offered to let me be the tire warmer. His car is prety well prepped and he's been doing well in it locally so I gave it a shot.

Topeka was my first nationals and only the second time I'd driven the car.

The car's owner (Russ) didn't fair so well, but he'll be back next year to hopefully trophy himself.

It was nice meeting all you STU'ers. I'll be back next year but will likely be in my WRX in STX so keep your eyes open

And I'm still recovering from last nights banquet. Went to a bar after it then drank more in the hotel. Doh! Long drive home but we made it.

Well actually your car was illegal last year Branden. You were running a piggyback (UTEC if I remember correctly) and that is not legal. Of course none of us realized that it was not legal at the time. I would not call that cheating, just uninformed (along with the rest of us).

Yep, that Civic is DSQ which had two top trophy spots. Jon was looking to trophy and looks like he's in a good position to do just that.

Pat is kicking ass, but no suprises. He's been VERY fast this year on his new (ahmen, Zzyzx...) coilovers. :)

Gilbert and Noel were running JICs on their 2000 2.5RS and the right rear snapped in two on Gilbert's first run in the "showcase" turn on the East course. The left was also cracked.
thunderbird 09-29-2006 11:28 AM

Congrats Branden! It was nice to meet you and talk about your car set up ( I was the guy watching the STU competition from the fence next to your family). You drove great, with no mistakes and a very clean line.

This was my first Nationals and I went as a spectator. While it was a good learning experience, spectating is nowhere near as much fun as racing. I'll be there next year, barring an unforseen disaster and I'll be racing whether my car is adeqautely prepped or not.

Its interesting to reflect on what it takes to win in STU. I've heard other people claim that the yokohama advans were the best tire for the class. Branden's success probably can't be attributed to though tires though. While his car was set up to the rules, he still has to drive the car well. He seemed to know his way around the course very, very well.

It was especially interesting to listen to people after the races during the post-race inspection. Obviously there is a lot of disappointment for some of those that didn't win. I think there's more of a tendency in the modified classes to blame the car setup, or the car. I heard a lot of words about how the course was a corvette course or an Evo course after the BSP heat on Wednesday. At least Branden put a Subaru on the champion's pedestal.

Last years use of a UTEC was a combination of reading the rules, and interpreting them incorrectly. Regardless, the tuning done on the car yielding 308hp to the tire (found out that the Dyno was reading 19% low because of calibration differences) is 22hp more than what I ran last year. Torque is screwy because we did the Dyno off of roll speed which has you lose a bit of torque. Car made good power this year with the cool dry weather.

Funny somebody brought that up. I was inspecting brake dust shield sizes between year models (larger on the '05 &^) and looking at Branden's lug pattern. Didn't suspect cheating, just wondered if anyone had upgraded their 04's. He got us fair and square.

Steve,

I saw you run twice earlier this year at a Triad autoX and the CommonWealth Games both held in Danville, VA. You were definitely in amazing form and comparing your driving to Mike Neary's at that point in the season - I felt you were definitely ahead of him.

Not knowing everything that was going on with you leading up to your trip to Topeka, I'd say the biggest challenge you faced was something you created for yourself - changing tire brands about 1 month away from the big event. I know you had the 24hr CCR event to learn your new set-up, but you mentioned in an earlier post that the tires weren't shaved to racing depth for that event IIRC. Basically, you were an experienced, gifted driver going into battle with a set-up that you were still learning...

My advice, use this Winter to develop your set-up, and run with the same set-up throughout the '07 season (with minor tweaks as needed) and go into nationals next year with that set-up. Top 5 finish guaranteed.

Show up in a well-prepped car, drive well, and hope that it's good enough. That's all you can do.

I could name a whole bunch of very talented drivers -- definitely capable of a top 5 finish -- who went home from this Nationals without even a trophy. You don't win at Topeka on talent and car prep.

Thanks for the nice words. We actually had to make an even more last minute tire change....the wheel/tire setup we ran was first run on the Nationals test day on Sunday in Topeka. We had planned to run the Sport Contact 3's, however they did not arrive in the US as an OE tire in time to be included. We made a last minute substitute to the Sport Contact 2's like we ran last year. Although a great tire, they are not as suited to the STi as the 3's.

There are a lot of things that go into a win, and like someone else mentioned, a big part of it is how the cards fall. When you have such a large group of talented drivers, any outcome is possible.

Funny that you mention that Max!

I talked to Hoppe when I was getting ready to board my flight home. He said, "I think I will "Cherry Pick" an STU jacket next year, but I need to find someone who will let me co-drive an STI."

I laugh when I think about that, especially after hearing Rankins tell me the story of Hoppe running 3 hot laps right after breaking first gear on the launch for "One Lap Of America".

Anyways, Hoppe says he will make it to Topeka in 07, which basically means the drivers meetings and Impound will be much more interesting in 07.

It will all depend on how much NASA stuff I run next year with the Fiat. If I run enough events, and feel competitive, then I'll probably run the NASA Runoffs at Mid Ohio. If not...then maybe i'll con some WRX or STi driver into a ride at Nationals ;)

I'll for sure make some of the West Coast events. Sean's DSP Subie is getting quicker, so maybe we'll be BMW fodder at Atwater.

Oh..and I'll prolly mis Fontana, as I'll be getting hitched March 24th.

Hoppe and I had fun bench racer over AIM during Tues/Wed competition.

FYI...protested STS civic had the following issues:
Exhaust didn't exit behind the driver
Underbody coating had been scraped off
Sound deadening under the carpet had been removed.

Personally...I ended up 23rd in STS. Didn't quite make the first page, but not bad for a first try in an unfamiliar car.

Congrats to Corey for a great 2nd day run...bumped him up into the trophies!

Nice meeting those of you I did meet...I hope to see more of you next year as I try a couple Pro events in my own car. STX watch out, here comes another one!

For more event pictures, www.digitalracephotography.com. At the moment they only have the ProSolo photos up. I can't wait to see if hey have pics of me killing 7 cones of an 8 cone wall on my last run!

7th place DSP. Well it was my goal to trophy this year. Wooohooo!!
Thx to all for the support!!
First off, I want to thank Tom(kartboy) for his support over the years. Steve of Zzyzx Motorsports for the great struts.:disco:
Plus I-Speed for the great reflash and I-Zoom Graphics for most of the graphics and the Calvin sticker with him pissing on the letters "BMW" :D which I got from Brandon.
I was very surprised to be only .3 sec out of the lead on the first day on the east course with a 52.045 . Not sure if the BMW's were struggling or were sand baggin as the possible BMW move to BSP was heavily on thier minds. My co-drive was just out of the trophies on the first day by about .04 sec. Second day on the west. I goofed on my last run by not lining up to the right to get a better run into the crossover before the first slalom. My best was a 51.073. Could have been in the 50's but oh well. It happens at Nats. My co-driver struggled to get close to my times and was bummed but he did great for not being in the seat for a long time and only having a hand full of events in my car. Big thanks to him, Mike Brown, for co-driving as I could have not done as well as I did without him. I would have never gotten enough heat in my tires as we did.
Great job by the De Los Reyes's on the second day as they ran very well as Gilbert had a faster time then me on Friday with a 50.754. I was bummed to see them break on Thrusday and not get a full set of runs as Gilbert was on his first run when he broke. BIG thx to Steve(zzyzx) giving them his rears struts off his car so they could run on Friday:D
Big thx to Jay and Ed and the other subie drivers in DSP and other who where there to chear me on. Jay and I want to stick a wedge in the BMW before they went bye bye. LOL

Congrads to all the others for a great showing. Brandon my boy laying the smack down in STU AGAIN!!!. ::banana:
Cory with the awsome 2nd day run to jump up into 9th and Jon for holding on the last trophy in STS
I probably missed a bunch others. If so, good job all.
i don't have any pics of the car at this time.

If the BMW's goto BSP, sound like a lot of the other RS's will be moving to DSP. Billy? Cory? :D

Very nice photos, as usual.... but none of me from the ProSolo, and only one of me on the East course (but 3-4 of my codriver). :( Oh well. It was a sucky week for me anyway, no need to commemorate it anyway.

Congrats to Corey on an amazing drive on Friday putting down a kick arse time and getting himself in a solid trophy spot.

Was great to see two subaru's in the trophies in STS!

Big thanks to Steve of Zzyzx Motorsports for all his help this season as well as Dieman Motorsports for letting us do and ECU comparison just before Nats.

Good luck with your 'new' plans for 2007 Corey! I too won't likely be in STS anymore.

Congrats to everyone else who trophied! Branden you were movin! Jerry for really flying on the last day in STU.

Pat for surprising a few BMW's and to the DSP RS guys from Cali for putting down some smoking times on Friday with some Zzyzx rear coilovers in place of their broken JIC's. It would have been interesting to see how they would have finished if they wouldn't have broken the first day.

Jon
