Video lap of the Nurburgring, STi5 TypeRA Style part 3

Arnie 01-09-2003 07:23 PM

I think these last few posts from John need to be added to one of the FYI STi threads in the Sti Forum.
Iain 01-09-2003 07:27 PM

Book by John....

Training USDM WRXSTi: The Sequel
with a CD of videos that show how to do it all would sell like hotcakes!

Hell, this thread alone is a very good start on something like that. The setup information earlier in the thread is what many people on this site need to hear ... real world results with the reasoning behind it. Just like gold.

Wholly Flurkin Slipzhutz! Oh man, that really tugged hard on my obsessive compulsive impreza disorder! That's awesome! I know what I'm doing with my first set of tires when I get mine in 2005- I'm going to school in a parking lot! :D :D :D
johnfelstead 01-10-2003 06:45 PM

cheers guys. I need to get my hands on an Auto DCCD equiped car now. *whistles*

Nice series of pictures those arent they. :D

Update on the Video, all the footage is stored in the editing system and the laps with 2 cameras are all syncronised, things are making progress.

When i have some screen shots of the first draft i'll post these here and you guys can tell me if you like the look/feel and features onscreen.

The aim is to give an exciting mix of angles with a rotating race circuit map showing where you are, plus corner name indication too.

Re: the video-
Sounds great, looking forward to it, bring it on! :p
johnfelstead 01-11-2003 04:53 PM

Time for a new Video I think. :D

This was taken during my last trip to the ring in November. It was pretty cold and the track was very slippy, lots of damp patches under the trees, lots of leaves on some of the corners, not to mention all the sand put down at crash scenes. Particular points to notice are at

3:07 the barriers on the right are smashed, a Porsche hit those at least 130MPH and ended up at the top of the hill where all the cement dust is. :o

7:52 there is a huge amount of dirt on the track, going off line there would have you in a mess.

8:32 a French Impreza Turbo had just crashed. I had taken the driver out for a lap just beforehand so think he was trying to push it a bit harder than he should. Result of that was a stuffed in right front corner.

The camera for this lap is mounted on the right-hand door mirror, I really like the view it gives of the front wheel and shows hitting the apexes really well. You can also see how much input the steering receives on some of the tighter corners fighting oversteer, yet how little there is in the fast stuff where I am being very smooth.

The sound quality on this was lousy due to a problem with the microphone, so instead I have mixed this lap with some music a good friend of mine from Belgium recorded. Theo Van Daele is his name; he plays every instrument, mixes all the tracks and does the vocals too. I think its good stuff.

Hope you enjoy. :D

Very cool, I just started the download.
Sounds like an exciting angle, can't wait!
Dussander 01-12-2003 12:16 PM

Belguim style Metallica.. interesting. ;)

Man, that place looks really dreary in the winter.

Great driving of course.
thechickencow 01-12-2003 02:43 PM

Your driving is beautiful, music is awesome, best video yet!!!
johnfelstead 01-12-2003 04:40 PM

The ring in November is very strange, sort of earie at night especially. Almost everwhere is closed too. Sabine still gives it large in the M5 though, which is always fun to watch.

This is Sabine in her bar with a couple of my friends. She wanted an IFG Tshirt. See if you can work out what that means.

Hey John, I'm havins some problems downloading your latest. Is there anything wrong with your server? Unfortunately, it's probably me.
johnfelstead 01-13-2003 01:50 PM

unfortunately its not on a very good server. It should still download OK, but fairly slowly compared to the others.

IFG = I'm F*****g Great. :lol:

You forgot the fact she owns a bar Andrew. :D

I really enjoyed this last video. The dreary sky and music went well together. Nice work!

John,

Great stuff. Thanks for sharing it with us.

johnfelstead 01-13-2003 07:12 PM

Thanks chaps

it's on a faster server as a wmv file now

I saw the first cut of my video intro today. WOW, it's really good stuff. Cant wait to get this ready. :D
mlambert 01-13-2003 07:27 PM

that most recent video is great...so peaceful with the music...driving is so smooth.
skope 01-13-2003 09:44 PM

Are you going to put up a trailer once it's all done?
johnfelstead 01-14-2003 05:50 AM

Yes, once we are ready to ship these i will put up a short clip so you know what the pro video looks and feels like. If the first rough cut intro is anything to go by you wont be disapointed. :)
Fred 01-14-2003 04:34 PM

I was showing a few of your videos to my boss, a lady in her forties the other day, and she was enthralled. :) She's a bit of a car person, though; most of my co-workers think you're insane. And the guy I share an office with said, "Maybe I'm stupid or something, but how is it the guy in the Subaru is passing Porsches and BMWs?" I replied, "Because the combination of the car and driver is faster... "

Maybe I've missed it somewhere, but I was wondering if anything has ever passed YOU when you're out there...
johnfelstead 01-14-2003 07:20 PM

Its pretty rare i get passed these days, it does happen though.

This year in the dry i can remember 2 cars and 3 motorbikes passing me. Those were a Porsche GT2 and a YES (dont ask, stupid german kit car). The bikes were well riden R1's or similar.

In the wet i have had 4 cars pass me all year, that being a couple of 944 turbos, the ring taxi and the ring mini. This was in torential rain when i was driving on bald tyres, so i slowed down to stop aquaplaning. No bikes have in the wet.

I always do a slow sighting lap each morning to check out if they have closed a section of track, like T13 bypass, or there is anything obvious about the track condition. I dont count that as i am just cruising being ultra safe. Too many times i have seen bad crashes first lap because people dont check, they just go mental. Last trip but 1 a biker went head on into the T13 closer tyres, stupid idiot didnt do a sighting lap.

It doesnt matter what cars are there these days, i am pretty much faster than them, it takes a long time to get to doing consistent 8:30's all day.

Why do they think i am insane? It's a lot safer than driving on a highway in the USA with a bunch of half asleep people going to work pre coffee.

Amen! Driving 6000+ pound SUV's while putting cosmetics on the face with one hand and talking on the phone with the other is buisness as usual in america.
I guess that's why god gave us 2 knees.
grandpa rex 01-15-2003 07:21 AM

Hello John. The new video is brilliant! A question: a while back, I thought you mentioned that the Ring had banned car cams because someone had posted a video of a fatal accident on the net. Have they relented on this policy, or am I having a hallucination?
johnfelstead 01-15-2003 09:27 AM

nope, you remember correctly and as of yet they havnt relented.

What you are seeing is me in full stealth mode. :D:lol:

The camera i use is 4mm in diameter and 40mm long, this is connected to a camera control unit, that then feeds a seperate Walkman style MiniDV recorder unit. The audio is fed via a seperate micraphone and audio amp. All this is powered from a 240Volt AC inverter plugged into my cigarette lighter.

Rig setup.

Camera next to a Euro and Pound coin

This is how i can get so many diferent camera angles such as from my eye level on my helmet, or on the front splitter. I just stick a bit of blue tack on the bodywork, fix the camera in place then use tank tape to hold it in place. This kit is worth a few $K's.

On this last video i stuck the camera to the door mirror then made sure i entered the track when no marshal was to my right. :o

You can see the camera on my mirror in this photo. (or rather the tank tape)

John -

I swear, your car looks positively svelte compared to our WRX's. What is her "running" weight?
johnfelstead 01-15-2003 09:52 PM

mine weighs in at 1240kg (2733lb) and has 280BHP stock with lower gearing and front, centre and rear mechanical/electromechanical LSD's etc.

a WRX saloon weighs in at 1385Kg (3053lb) and has 215BHP with higher gearing, no front LSD, viscous centre and rear LSD.

a WRX Wagon weighs in at 1410Kg (3108lb) and has 215BHP with higher gearing, no front LSD, viscous centre and rear LSD.
Kostamojen 01-16-2003 05:44 AM

ARG!

Get those vids down to ~10mb so I can actually download them :p

I want to see how your car handles compaired to mine... (my L weighs under 2600lbs)
johnfelstead 01-16-2003 07:49 PM

they will handle totally diferently. Mainly due to the gearbox/diff setup and the extra grunt.
Kostamojen 01-17-2003 03:49 AM

Not as differently as you would suspect, which is what I am curious about...
johnfelstead 01-17-2003 06:21 AM

i am curious, why do you say that? :D
Kostamojen 01-17-2003 05:22 PM

You said you werent running an expensive suspension, which I prusume means you have the stock RA suspension yes? Then I would have to say my suspension set up would probably be better, and from looking at the pics of your car in action it does look alot like how my car oversteers now, so I wanted to see how you drove it...
Dussander 01-17-2003 05:46 PM

I believe John posted somewhere in this thread that he runs Leda struts. The stock ones did not hold up to the abuse because they got to hot if my memory serves me.
Subie Gal 01-17-2003 05:50 PM

yep fancy struts n a little weight reduction...
that's all that's needed to drive fast

pardon my *cough* sarcasm...

there's so much more to handling than that...

starts with #1... the nutter behind the wheel!! :D

and JF is nutz as they come ;)

hehehee.. i KNOW!!! :D

J.
johnfelstead 01-17-2003 06:14 PM

LOL @ Jamie

Hopefully we get to have fun like that again soon j!

Thats right Dussander, i have LedaB with tuned spring/damper rates and the reason i changed from the very good inverted strut STi5 RA setup was due to overheating problems.

The way a car handles is far more complex than what suspension you run and how much the car weighs.

Our cars will be two completely diferent animals. You have to remember i have 280BHP and a transmistion system that splits the torque 65/35. Add to that 3 mechanical limited slip diffs and your talking about chalk and cheese.

I also have some very eficient AP racing brakes and 2 pot vented rears which allow me to do things with the car you couldnt do with a stock setup.

Uprated suspension helps a car big time, but you cant change its intrinsic power distribution or drivability in the same way as having lots of power and a sophisticated transmition system.

This will probably become more clear to you when you see the DCCD equiped 2.5T STi run rings round equally powered cars on track, it makes a huge diference.
Kostamojen 01-18-2003 04:28 AM

Fine then, dont compress it more for me so I can download it and instead sit there arguing about something I didnt say :p

Ill try to DL that 26meg version and hopefully my net connection doesnt disconnect sometime over night like it usually does...

Oh, and I run rings around WRX's autocrossing :p

And I havent been to the track yet, and I want to see how to drive a lighterweight GC8 (with some sort of suspension set up roughly simular to mine, which yours is the closest ive heard of yet with in-car vids) properly, which is why i want to see the vids!
Andrew Bacon 01-18-2003 06:10 AM

Watching this episode develop on the side, I figured it wouldn't pass without egos getting bruised.

....And I run circles around Toyota Echo's at Rally-X.....Espically when they are lying on their side!
johnfelstead 01-18-2003 12:00 PM

Oh please!

It's not my fault you have a crappy net connection. You are getting the oportunity to see some good quality footage for free. I could quite easily pull all my footage off the net and tell you to buy the video if you want to see anything at all.

The video is 10 minutes long, it's already as compressed as i can make it without it looking useless. If that isn't good enough for you then i am sorry, it's the best i can do.

If you cant get your head around the concept that the way a car handles has as much to do with power levels and torque distribution then you have a lot to learn. You obviously didnt read my last paragraph properly either. Try again.

I hope you dont whine so much when you get freebies from everyone else, people will soon be calling you Burns, and it wont be for your driving ability.
dorikin 01-18-2003 12:42 PM

hey now, i for one, would like to thank you for taking the time to make and post those vids!

i hope to drive the ring one day when time and resources permit and until then i'll live vicariously through your helmet cam!
skope 01-18-2003 01:11 PM

Don't change the size of the files! And thank you very much for putting these great videos up! :D
Arnie 01-18-2003 01:38 PM

Is it just me or is Kostamojen coming across as an arrogant, very ignorant, self assuming pr**k?

Perhaps I bow down to the temple of Felstead too much, but to have the ignorance to put his (kostamojen's) L with whatever fancy schmancy suspension in the same handling category as Jon's RA is a bit...much.

He runs circles around WRXs in autocrosses? That one pic John posted was probably taken at speeds over 100mph. I don't think you can compare the handling characteristics of a car on a 40 mph autocross to the 150mph John is seeing on this track. And as Jamie said, it doesn't matter how your car is set up, you need to know how to drive! And from what I have seen, John is probably the most talented and knowledgable driver on this board.

anyway, great material john. thanks so much for sharing these as well as your vast knowledge with us.
johnfelstead 01-18-2003 02:07 PM

It's a pleasure.........usually. :lol::D
dorikin 01-18-2003 02:24 PM

by the looks of those videos i'd be willing to bet that felstead could turn out a sub~9 minute lap in a touring coach

Please don't change or delete the files John. Even though It takes my machine and ISP several hours to DL a vid, that is perfectly OK with me...I get what I wait for, and I pay zero! :D:D:D

compressed vid

Kostamojen -

With John's permission, I host some of his vids and I took the time to compress a few using a Microsoft codec. The vid has lost some of it's luster, but it's down to 17mb. My server is on a very fast connection. I hope this helps.

JF - Keep up the great vids - the mirror cam was awesome!

Casey
Kostamojen 01-19-2003 05:09 AM

Why are you taking me so seriously? (*cough* English *cough* )

I dont get it?

Anyhow, I dl'ed the "doormirror cam" last night and it didnt help much... I mean, its hard to tell what the car is doing from inside-the-car-views. I could see the off-trottle oversteer occuring, but that was about it. I got more info from those corner photos.

What I dont get is why you think this is some sort of a freebie... Did you have to spend money to upload it? Everyone else is estatic to get their vids hosted for free. Heck, I wish I made money off of the "Impreza Tribute" vid i made that got download a few hundred times, but the fact that anyone even downloaded it made me happy enough! And it took me a week to even find somewhere to host it (and it was only 1.5mb)

I never said I was a good driver, I never said my car had the power of an STI type-RA, and I never meant any dis-respect. My problem is that all the vids ive seen are GDA's on the track with fair drivers, and that I havent seen vids with GC's and skilled drivers that I could learn something from...

And thanks wrxinfx for that vid, ill dl it ASAP

You just dont get it do you? I am anoyed by your tone, because like too many people these days, you moan about something not being 100% perfect for YOU and you completely forget that maybe other people are getting something positive. As to your wants as to comparing your driving, car to mine i am sorry i cant help you more.

If you dont understand the concept of a freebie, i.e. it costs you nothing, then you've lost me there too. The cost to me isnt an issue, if it was a problem i wouldnt be putting these on the net at all. I put these vids up so people can enjoy them, not to allow myself to feel estatic, as you put it.

I am in the middle of making a comercial video, the idea for that came from the reception my videos on here plus other websites have received. This is a big investment of time from both myself and a profesional TV producer. I hope that is something extra special and gives an insight into driving at the ring you dont get from anything else on the market. We shall see.

If it works well i may make a bit of money, if it doesnt then i wont. Either way it wont come close to breaking even on the costs involved in making these videos. But again, thats not the point, i drive at the nurburgring because i love to do it, it's the most challenging race circuit in the world and i am very fortunate to have the finances and ability to do it fairly regularly. If you guys can share just a small part of that then brilliant. I know i love watching other peoples vidoes, so i am returning the favour.

Casey, i really apreciate your help on hosting the vids! cheers mate, you are getting a freebie copy of my video when its ready.
Iain 01-19-2003 05:08 PM

I get IT!

... and I appreciate IT, tell everyone I can about IT, hope IT continues, and remain thankfully amazed that someone actually incurred the expense and time to share IT.

I would gladly pay for IT and am awaiting the commercial version of IT.

Thanks, John, for all of IT!

Ach, sorry, its so hard not reply to this...

Kostamojen, you make it sound like John made these videos just to teach you how to drive and now that you've seen one video you're disappointed that it doesn't give you step by step input on how to drive. This video "didn't help much..."? What the heck are you going on about? Who is it supposed to help? You make it sound as if it was just such a big waste of your time to even watch it. If you haven't gotten it by now, these were videos John took for fun to document some of his runs at the Ring. He never said that these are "how to videos". Nothing more nothing less. That he posted them to share with us at all was damn generous. Most will only dream of driving this track, much less in an Impreza STi RA. And that is it. If you want better videos, go buy something that suits your needs and quit moaning here.

And no he did not have to spend cash to upload but the equipment he uses isn't exactly cheap.

Why is everyone taking you so seriously and not just ingnoring you? Good question. Perhaps its because you are being such an A$$ in front of god and everyone and it doesn't seem like you even see that. Just need to point it out. I dunno, I just don't understand how you can be so obnoxious and disrespectful on this thread.

Exactly. Pretty clear the dweeb thrives on attention of any kind (including derision) so don't swat at it, and it'll go away.
zoomfactor 01-20-2003 10:08 AM

Not to get any more off topic but... John, what is the significance of the graffiti on the track? It seems to be concentrated in several specific areas.
johnfelstead 01-20-2003 10:23 AM

the grafitti is written by spectators either during the F1 race, as the ring is used for camping, or prior to the 24hr race. It doesnt help traction in the wet, thats for sure!
ChrisW 01-20-2003 10:59 AM

John,

great video work! I look forward to more vid edits:D

Here's an idea, with that cool little camera, can you get a sycronized view of the pedel box and a second view. the second view could either be a helmet cam, mirror cam, or a perspective view of the cabin so we can see your wheel imputs through the windscreen...

Are 7 minute laps in the future?
johnfelstead 01-20-2003 11:15 AM

That's a little tricky now, as they have banned the use of videos.

I could probably do something like that at another circuit though. I am just looking into booking a day at Spa, i think that would be a cracking circuit to film on.

I cant see me doing a sub 8 minute lap in my scoob, not without taking big risks and running slicks anyway.
skope 01-20-2003 12:50 PM

Are there any other places/tracks that you attend often?
johnfelstead 01-20-2003 12:59 PM

I have driven on virtually every track in the UK, i know Donington like the back of my hand, done over 1000 laps there.

I tend to do one track a month on average, i used to do 2 a month but it got a bit too boring/repetitive.
