2006 SCCA Solo Nationals thread part 2

solo-x 08-23-2006 04:48 PM

jason is my 2nd pick for STS champion. sorry dude, you woulda got my vote if you'd stuck with the honda. i picked corey to win. i predict rain on the first day for STS and corey putting a pretty big lead on anything 2 wheel drive. jason will be in 2nd, kevin in 3rd. nothing will change for day two, but corey will only have 4th fastest time but will be close enough to just stay ahead of jason and kevin. jason will take fastest time on day 2 in the dry. a civic will not win this year.

*puts tarrot cards away*

unfortunately, i'll probably miss this battle. i'll either be in grid, running or in impound since CM runs the same days as STS.

STU will be won by Mike Neary. the EVO/STi crowd won't be able to use all their power on the tighter courses. the bmw's better balance will carry it through on the largely sweeper intensive courses with minimal, if any, straights.

anyone else want a "pulled straight from my a$$" prediction? i'm making room for my head.
PhilC 08-23-2006 05:08 PM

Let's hear STX and BS Nate. :)

I'm entertained: Keep going. :)

Based off of your STU predicition, an '06 WRX won't catch the 330s either, in your opinion? :p
Based off of your STU predicition, an '06 WRX won't catch the 330s either, in your opinion? :p
Steven Rankins will likely be the fastest Subaru driver. Will he catch Neary's M3 (not 330)? Good question.

Nate, can you tell me how FS will shake out? I don't want to waste my time again like last year if I don't have to.

Karen,

Are you competing in FS or FS-L? If you compete in FS-L you'll be my pick to win over Crissy Weaver!

Steve Rankins and Mike Neary will have an awesome battle in STU. I'm tipping my hat in favor of Steve but the win margin in this class will be extremely narrow.

I hope Jonathan Roberts can get the job done in AS, but against the super fast C4's and S2000's, it'll be tough at best.

Josh Sortor FTW in STX!!!!!
Chiketkd 08-23-2006 07:59 PM

Btw, I picked Justin Rest (aka alltracin) to take DS!

I'll be there doing my best to piss off as many Subaru/Evo owners as I can in 10 year old car that makes an awesome 189whp (on a Mustang).

Mike
#27 STU

edit: didn't mean to exclude the Evo owners :D

Good luck to you Sir. I didn't see Rankins name on the drop down list, but if he's a late entry into the class, you'll have a battle royale on your hands! Should be very close.

No love for Billy? :(
No love for Billy? :(
There's love for Billy Brooks! I wouldn't be dissapointed if he won the title as it'll be another Subaru owner at the top of the podium!

Same goes for Mike King if he runs his WRX in the class...
PhilC 08-23-2006 08:46 PM

If it rains for everyone in the class for a full three runs STX is going to be owned by Billy. Quite simply none of the rest of us can come close to his ability in the wet. If you didn't get a chance to see him drive in the monsoon in WDC you really missed an interesting exhibition. I think Billy's got a damn good chance to unseat Josh this year in both Pro and Nationals with Jason's car under him even in the dry.

Does Mike even own a WRX? Last I heard he had jumped into a Spec Miata for fun and still had his E46 M3 for a daily driver. Mike helped partly finance our season last year by co-driving our car.
jcroy66 08-23-2006 08:52 PM
Same goes for Mike King if he runs his WRX in the class...
Mike bought another WRX??

Karen, FWIW, I picked Billy in the Pick-the-Winners. I think that if it rains, it's gonna be all over (and I'm wagering that this year Billy doesn't get screwed by having it rain after first drivers, but before his first run). And even if it's bone dry, Billy is a solid bet. :)
solo-x 08-23-2006 09:02 PM

STX is simple. Billy. 'nuff said.

BS, KC trails after day one. Drying conditions while the class runs leaves KC trailing after 2nd drivers get better conditions. Day 2, lead changes hands every run. As the dust settles, teh old man is victor with fastest time of the day for BS. margin of victory is .044.

FS... my crystal ball is a little cloudy here. No, wait, that's a g-string from Club Orleans. well, now all i see are b00bies. seems karen ditched nationals and stayed at club orleans? must go now. *leaves room carrying crystal ball*

No love for the West Coast? I hate to bust your bubble, but there are a few new kids out here that'll make some noise at both the finale and national championships. Let Billy and Josh get all the votes, but it'll be two different drivers that put on the show.

As for BS, I see KC and Isley leading after day one, but new dad Joe Geoke taking home the hardware after a blistering third run on day two. Also, Max Hayter will take STU in a shocker, just in case anyone wondered.
steverife 08-23-2006 10:14 PM

Hollis seemingly has it all locked up. I know that STS2 has gotten faster, but I'm surprised that no one thus far has picked last year's winner. With that said, I'm not either. I'm pickin' Feinberg.

I'm also hopin' that a yellow Z messes up everyone's plans in BS. :)

I think this year should be close for sure.

For the record though, my wet time was .236 seconds slower than BB's, more than made up for by my dry advantage of .544. So, nobody actually got screwed... Except maybe Basham. ;) poor guy....

(BB definitely got hosed on a spot better than 5th though....)
Jsortor 08-23-2006 11:19 PM
No love for the West Coast? I hate to bust your bubble, but there are a few new kids out here that'll make some noise at both the finale and national championships. Let Billy and Josh get all the votes, but it'll be two different drivers that put on the show.
Naw.... you'll crack under the pressure..... :p
jcroy66 08-24-2006 06:54 AM
(BB definitely got hosed on a spot better than 5th though....)
Yep, that was my point. I didn't mean that he would necessarily have WON last year, just that all the 2nd drivers lost out on chances at better positions than they ended up with.

Also, I certainly did not mean to take ANYTHING away from your National Championship, Josh!! I have to say - I was impressed to see that you'd stepped way up your wet performance after 2004. :) And then Friday - blistering fast runs! It was such a blast watching you guys run! I just hope that some day, I'll be able to at least challenge for a trophy, instead of just going "geez, where were those extra 5 seconds?!?!" :)

Chiketkd, my point was that unless something has changed recently, Mike King doesn't own a WRX (and hasn't in 2 years). You'd said "if he runs his WRX".
KC 08-24-2006 07:44 AM
Hollis seemingly has it all locked up. I know that STS2 has gotten faster, but I'm surprised that no one thus far has picked last year's winner.
If a certain RX7 was running at Nats after having a strong start at the beginning of the year, I would have picked him... but he seems to have stopped trying STS2.
I'm also hopin' that a yellow Z messes up everyone's plans in BS. :)
Just like the Z itself... fat chance.

Let's keep going with 'pull it outa your a..' predictions. Evo/STI for the win in BSP?

Dave
djb_rh 08-24-2006 09:07 AM

Don't sleep on Jonathan Roberts in AS. I'm still hoping to get some shocks out of Steve before Nationals, but even if I don't, I think the car can win at HPT. Jonathan had a lot of sand at Wendover. There's also the chance that AS could run early on Tues/Wed (as well as a chance of weather) that could help us. I'm not sure he needs it, though. That car suits his driving style *really* well, nevermind the fact that he's an incredible driver.

It'll also certainly be course dependent to a certain degree. My opinion is if things are pretty tight, the S2000 wins (Windveen would probably be my choice). If things are a little more open, Jonathan wins. But we shall see...
Lieber in the Evo IX for the BSP win.

My vote goes with Tak. He's usually the faster of the two at the local events. As for voting for you...we'll see how you do this weekend in Oscoda. Its looking to be a preview of nationals anyway (you, Jen, Billy, Jason). If you can beat Billy, I'll change my vote!
There's also the chance that AS could run early on Tues/Wed (as well as a chance of weather) that could help us.
That's why I voted for last years winner... Paul Kozlak. Weather could very well be a factor, and the Porsche is a force to be reckoned with in the rain... as last year was very telling in this regard. :)

It doesn't hurt that he's from my region. :D

Yeah, I guess it's hard to sleep on the Kozlaks no matter what the conditions. They are a force no matter what they drive, and that 993 does definitely look good on course. I suppose Paul would be my choice if I had to pick one person, right now, regardless of conditions. For most folks I'd have to say that having not seen them at a National event this season probably hurts some, but not for them. They've just got too much dang experience and have probably at least run some local stuff. I know I've seen their names on some PCA results, too. All we can really say is that AS will be one heck of a battle, and IMHO, my STi will at least be in the mix of it all. :)

Me, I'm just hoping for a top 50 finish in it.

Kumho Tires Presents:
Solo Community Cone Academy (SCCA)
Conee Video Awards Party

Thursday, September 28, 2006
Heritage Hall, Kansas Expocentre

Your Emcee and Host, Roger Ohio Johnson, will be putting out the red carpet for you to enjoy an evening of Food, Drink, Racing Movies, Music, Solo Videos, Comedy and Awards

Conee Solo Awards
 Best in car Video
 Best DNFs and Spins Video
 Funniest Solo Video
 Best Overall Solo Video

Plus, Special Conee Awards
Best Musical Performance of a Video Song of the Year
 Video Titles, various categories
 Best Conee Hat

Rules for Conee Awards

1. Participants are required to have fun, no exceptions.
2. Those not having fun will be the first targets in next years Dunk Tank.
3. For those not having fun more than once, they will be required to serve a year on the SEB working exclusively on kart rules.
4. Real Rules:
a. Videos
i. Videos submitted for judging should be two minutes in length and absolutely no longer than three minutes.
ii. Videos must be submitted as a DVD. VHS tapes will be used to level tables.
iii. DVDs must be set up for a quick queue. Scoring will be reduced if we have to watch someone re-program the DVD player or we have to watch videos of your dog while getting to the good stuff.

b. Video Song of the Year

i. Performers will be invited by the Conee Committee from past talent show participants. All along you thought you had just been performing for a set of tires each year, when in fact, those shows had been 15+ years of auditions for this moment. Sort of SCCAs version of American Idol.
ii. The performer will choose the song they want to do, but the Conee Committee will connect it to the video title.
Example: If John Doe wanted to perform Moon River, the Conee Committee might connect it to the fictitious video, The Dick Berger Story: The Bottom Drops Out. Suggestions from the performer on a video title are encouraged and tolerated.
iii. Interested past performers should contact the Conee Committee at the SCCA Solo department to let them know they are still available and are not tied up on that world tour with The Flock of Seagulls.

c. Video Titles of the Year

i. The categories, titles, and winners will be made up exclusively by the host and his loyal gophers.

d. Best Conee Hat

i. One and only rule: there are no stinking rules. Let the haberdashery and millinery splendor begin!!! Wait a minute, one small rule; clothes must be worn while having your Conee hat judged, as this IS a family show.

Let me get this straight. 12 Nationals, zero talent shows? You've really missed out on some serious fun.

I think I only missed 2 or 3 talent shows in my 12 appearances in Kansas ('90-'00, and '03). Alas, this year I'll be missing it by a few weeks, as I'll be there for the Runoffs, not the Solo Nationals.
