Can we get a "fix those rattles" thread going? part 16

eurospek 10-19-2013 11:01 AM

Sure have. But its definitely resonating from the interior, not exterior.

I have one on my Saabaru too- the spot I found was the 'channel' that is in between the dash pad and the plastic part of the dash behind it. Try putting some business cards in the far left hand side of this channel until it has some pressure pulling it apart and if it stops you have the same problem I do. If you do, I haven't solved the problem either, but will probably get some black weatherstrip down in that corner of the channel at some point to make some pressure; fortunately it's about the last one I have now.

What dash pad are you talking about? The flimsy padding that runs near the glass all the way down to the pedals near the firewall?

Currently I have the drivers side A pillar cover off, along with the long horizontal trim piece that runs closest to the glass with the sun sensor also off. Also took the bolt off that holds the dash down in that corner too. I'm trying to pull on the dash and put pressure in various spots to see if it stops the creaking when it does.

I'm really running out of ideas here and not really looking at taking out the whole dash apart for this because any trim piece I take off, I usually break something in the process. :D
eurospek 10-22-2013 06:18 PM

So I wedged some folded up carbboard pieces (roughly an inch thick) in the place I think you meant and still creaking/stressing. I've inserted it in two places as evident in the pic by the white stuff.

The creaking/stressing is happening in that left corner right right below the cardboard wedge. I just don't see what can be doing this.

Hmmm, may still be the same issue as mine, but putting something between the piece you have removed and the textured part of the dash in the lower part of your pic has worked fine for me and sounds like the same thing you tried. If I find the actual main source this weekend (installing remote start), I'll let you know.
Bradrcr 10-23-2013 04:22 PM

Scratch that, I missed the white stuff in my first look at the pic- try reinstalling the piece you removed and give what I did a shot, should only be able to fit in something narrow. If I'm explaining it weird, let me know and I'll take a pic.

for that rear hatch knocking/rattle sound
I followed this guys stuff and its the best 20 mins I've spent on my car so far
(20 mins because I engaged in a war with a particular mosquito or group of they all looked the same)

the pieces that hold the clips for the trim pieces do move, so I added some heavy duty electrical tape behind each corner to keep the moving to a minimum and muffled.

Ifl. Fiances new 08 hatch creaks like crazy over the tiniest bumps when the interior is cold. Never thought a car with 19k miles on it could creak n groan so much

Unfortunately it's from the a pillers which seems to be the unsolved one. Ill let everybody know if I get something to fix it

I solved it on my 2010...i put a thin piece of felt in between the connection point at the bottom...

For some reason these cars are some of the only ones i've ever worked on that don't have felt or some sort of material in between the plastics to keep noise down...little bits of felt in the right spots REALLY help to eliminate creaks and squeaks...on my 2010 Forester XT i'm going to have to pull the door panels off to line the door frame...

I got 4 square yards from JoAnn fabrics for 4.50$ like a year ago when I first started solving the creaking noises. Still have plenty of it!! haha:rolleyes:

I hear that in mine too, it sounds like its something under the dash. Don't really wanna have to pull the dash apart.
dsn112 12-03-2013 11:54 AM

the connection of the pillar to the dash is most of the problem when it is cold. Do that first and see what happens. I used 3/8 foam weatherstripping on mine and it is dead silent.

I hear it as well. I will experiment with the A pillar. But to fix any rattles use RAAMMAT & or Second Skin.

Does anybody get the driver side switch panel rattle? Whenever the music has even a little bass, the switch panel rattles like crazy. If I put my hand on it and put just a slight bit of pressure on it, it goes away. Not sure if it is the switch panel itself, or the switch panel against the door panel. The sound system is completely stock, no subwoofer rattling it... Yet.

I get this in my forester... Pull on the handle and see if it goes away... I think it's from inside the door where the plastic curves back and almost touches the metal frame. Haven't taken it apart yet but I think some rammat in there might solve it
kev1N 12-17-2013 10:07 AM

I have to figure out how to upload a video. I have a 13 wrx with 5k miles on it. You should hear the vent cover rattles. Im about to take a hammer to the dash.
Movado 12-28-2013 11:57 AM

I haven't read all 23 pages yet, but I do plan to.

My question is if anyone is having the rear view mirror rattle? I have the auto-dimming mirror w/ compass and I notice that if I leave my mirror in the exact same position it vibrates with road vibrations and the cabin vibration from running an open SPT mid-pipe.

I could just change the angle by a degree and it seems to make the mirror right again but after a couple miles it jiggles loose again and the sound becomes audible, any options? I don't like changing my review mirror angle during every ride, it gets dangerous.
Bradrcr 12-28-2013 02:45 PM

I have an '05 and '11 mirror of that style and neither rattles, but I have an older car with that issue- wound up having to put some adhesive on the ball and socket joint.

There are a couple "layers" in the mirror mount assembly. Just take it apart and tighten everything up. Same thing happened to me, but haven't had to re-tighten a second time, and that was about 6 months ago.

I have 2 new rattles that I'd like suggestions fixing.
1) center console, on the drivers side of the e-brake. its kind of a dull permanent vibration. if i press in towards the e-brake on the side of the plastic in between the seat it goes away.

2) front and rear driver side door arm rest. rattles/vibrates like crazy. it is insanely loud and obnoxious. if you press down on the control console it will go away.

Where did you put the weather stripping? Where the control console sits inside? Did you do anything with the cables? What piece was actually rattling?

Very good thread. It helped me solve a lot of rattles in my Subee. THe only one left is somewhere in the rear. I have a 2009 Impreza sedan. It sounds like plastic rubbing against something. I can hear it the most when it's hot outside when I turn or go over the bump.
gunny11218 03-12-2014 10:37 PM

Such a great thread. Helped me to fix the dreaded A-pillar creak (sp?).

Hopefully I can contribute to other solutions
marshallwrx1 03-13-2014 09:57 AM

I just fixed my A pillar rattle with some tape.

Now I got a buzzing coming from what seems to be the rear deck lid area? It's more annoying than the A pillar issue.
Dziwiszki 03-13-2014 10:48 AM

I finally found my problem in the back. I was reading this thread again and I completely missed the lock part on the back seats. Folded down the seat and no squeeking/rubbing anymore. I guess I just need to find something to wrap the lock so it doesn't do it anymore. Thank you for all the posts. You guys are great

Genius thread. I always thought my wagon hatch area rattle was coming from the spoiler. It continued even after I tightened it. I never sat back there to check it out. Going to foam up those tabs tonight!
What other forum would have answers to every minute problem that could ever occur to your car. And this thread has been going 8+yrs.
Just wish I could find the source of the leak in my hatch. Gonna have to take the trim pieces off and have someone hose it down while I sit back there. I've searched and can't find it posted on here.
dirtysoil 03-16-2014 02:56 PM

I had a rattle somewhere in the back of my 5-door. Of course the dealer was always unable to replicate the rattle. So in an attempt to fix the rattle, I started by putting electrical tape on the upper seat latches-(still rattled). Then I put foam tape on the underside of the plastic trim cover the spare tire rests on-(still rattled). Removed the cargo shade-(still rattled). Then last night I was really annoyed with the rattle. I pulled over and had my wife sit in the back to pinpoint the source, and the rattle stopped. The M-Fing seat bench was the problem!

Removed the bench and placed felt tape between the plastic locking brackets and the body, felt tape wrapped all three attaching loops on the bench, and for good measure, placed felt tape between the body and the hard plastic cover that protects the electrical connection that is behind the middle seat connection loop/locking bracket. So far the rattle has stopped!

Hopefully this helps someone else. Sorry, no pictures, I was determined to solve the rattle.

Hey all,

Bought a 2013 STI last fall and my car has been starting to make some noises this spring.

I took it to the dealer and went for a ride with a tech. The tech said that it is all basic noise, but I'm not confident that this can't be the case. We also weren't able to take it onto the highway where it is most noticeable. There is just way too much rattling and sometimes the noises get shockingly loud and that is frightening.

1. Rattling on driver side near air vent or the panel to the left of it with the airbag is

2. When slowing down with the car in gear I notice the front center dash (Near clock) makes a rattling noise. (This is the one that somtimes gets pretty loud)

3. Rattling noise from right passenger side dash or door. I haven't been able to find it.

4. general heavy noise when listening to music with bass at 0

I love the car and I know I didn't buy a luxury car meant for zero noise, but I don't think the cabin should be as loud as it is. I am also posting this a little premature. I have only put in about 20min with the search function

Any opinions/suggestions on possible fixes would be greatly appreciated!

It will happen. Mine was like driving in a styrofoam box filled with hungry kittens before I went loco and pulled the dash. In the winter especially... I would have been fine to trade the cost and not have it come with a radio to have had a better build quality in the interior.

I am cool with the plastics even and don't care about soft touch crap that everyone seems to dig. Who sits around finger bangin' their interiors anyway? I really was just looking for a reason to type out finger bangin'.

That stuff should work. The foam I have is slightly different but that should work. You want the foam to add a little tension to whatever you are trying to insulate. You don't want to use a foam that is super dense.

Lol don't worry I'll find a fix for this and get back to you. The dealership can't replicate the sound because the technician probably isn't good with warranty squeak/rattle work. It usually doesn't pay well so I can see why they are brushing you off, but if you kniw what you are doing, it can be a money maker.

chimchimm5 09-10-2014 04:53 PM

2011 WRX my passenger side door was squeaking while driving, right in the part where the door mates with the dash. I think it was exacerbated by the detailer putting "shiny armor all" type stuff on all the panels.

Fixed the squeak by waxing the contact points. Used that exterior sealant (Eagle1) and just wiped a coat onto the mating surfaces. Squeak GONE. :)

Oh crap I forgot to post in here again! On my car, I removed the door panel and when you look at the back side of the panel, there is a metal bracket held on by 3 screws. I removed the bracket and applied a small amount of felt on both sides of the mounting holes and then reinstalled the bracket. After I did this, I haven't heard a single door panel rattle since. Now I need to figure out all sorts of rattles from the rear. Haven't had much time lately to diagnose other rattles. Hope this door panel fix will work for you and anyone else with the same issue. For the rattles on the dash vents, you need to remove the panel on the left side of the dash, remove some screws for the driver side air vent, and then remove the dash vent (small one) and then insulate it where it makes contact to the dash. For the passenger side, you need to remove the radio bezel, the whole dash trim piece that includes the passenger vent (screws and clips) and then remove the dash vent and insulate the same way as the drivers side. Confusing sounding without pics I know, but message me if I can be of any help!

Loose center-console lid screws
If your center-console lid screws have loosened, you end-up trying to tighten them, only to have them loosen again.

The issue is that specially designed self-tapping screws are installed into the plastic cover and/or the plastic console base.

A solution that I discovered a long time ago is to wrap an inch-and-a-half or so long piece of Teflon-tape onto the threads of each screw. By doing so, you build-up the diameter of the screw and effectively 'add' to the worn plastic hole of the lid or console base. Reinstall each screw to snug; do not gorilla the screws in or give them an extra 1/4 turn.

Anybody else with a 2013 or 2014 have a rattle coming from somewhere in the trunk? I only hear it at low speeds going over speed bumps and pulling into gas stations. It's almost like a knocking sound more than a rattle and its kind of random possibly on the drivers side trunk wheel well area but its hard to tell.

On my 2013 I have the weirdest noise coming from inside my door panel. I can replicate the noise if I shut the door and put pressure on the door panel with the side of my leg. It sounds like a weird popping and groaning noise. I took the panel off and found out it is a piece of metal that is bolted to the inner skin right in the middle of the door. It looks like it kinda braces up the window and guides it as it goes down. If I crack the window at all the sound will go away, but with the window fully rolled up I pushed on the inner door skin metal right where its bolted to that piece and it makes the noise. The space behind there is very limited, and even if I completely remove the bolts the piece doesn't come off so I can't put anything behind it to deaden the noise. Any body ever have this problem? I can replicate it on both driver and passenger sides!

plastic noise
Hi everyone, i'm a new owner of a 2010 Subaru Impreza Hatchback sport pkg. Just bought the car earlier this week, this is my first Subaru, I always wanted one so i am very happy.

One of the concern I have about the car is in regards of plastic noise I hear coming from everywhere, mostly from the dash, passenger side and from the roof (it's look like) near the rear window. Not sure I can call these "rattle" (english is not my first language) so i'm not sure it's the good threat to post about my problem but there are kind of sound we normally hear in cheaper car. I can reproduce the sound by pressing a bit on the plastic pieces where they seem to come from (ex: on the dash just over the gloves box).

It's really annoying, are they normal sound for a 2010 Impreza. First I was in the impression that it was because of the cold temperature outside (i'm from Montreal) but even when the car is hot running for 30 minutes or more I still hear those plastic "clics".

Is it normal or it could be a sign of previous undeclared car accident, etc?

Is there something to do with it?

Thanks for your advises

^ It's completely normal man. You can do some things, but these cars have always been rattle traps.

Has anyone figured out how to fix the passenger AC fan?

It's not super loud - but definitely loud enough when the AC or heating is on that it bothers me at low speeds.

Finally figured out the annoying rattle that sounds like it's coming from the drivers door panel.

After a weekend of applying foam tape to every contact surface of the door panel, the rattle still was there or worse. Wat was odd was that the rattle would minimize or dissappear depending on my seat position/pressure. Finally, I realized it was the damn seat tilt lever. It was making contact with the trim that goes on the side of the driver seat. Applied foam tape to the back side of the lever and the noise is gone for good.

Hope that helps some people if it hasn't already been mentioned. It drove me nuts. Now I hear all of the window switches rattling. Sigh

Anyone have rattle in 08-14 hatch coming from the passenger side dash around the defrost vent? It has become more prominent since I've switched to coils.
