Carbon Wide Body Kit part 19

stever 01-11-2008 12:19 AM
im still here too

whats the story on the hood, trunk and rear wing?

also want to know about coating the cf to prevent fading in the sun... i dont know much about but thought you may have a clue(i never planned on painting the parts)
The hood is coming. I need to sell some fenders to pay for the hood molds, but it's gong to get done. That will be first. The wing is such a pain in the a$$ to make molds for, but it'll probably happen. No idea when I'll get the wing and trunk done though. Maybe another 7 years :D Glad you're still hanging in there.

If you want to keep it unpainted, we'll have to make a special set. We're experimenting with one layer of really thin fiberglass on the outside and carbon underneath for strength. That way, the surface finish is really nice and there are no voids. Unfortunately it looks like fiberglass. The bumper is the real problem because of the ducts and all. To get the perfect and line the carbon weave up, it would take a lot of time and be more expensive. Probably best to do it with pre-preg (dry carbon), but it would be expensive.

There are some reasonably cheap UV inhibitors out there. Or like silentbob343 said ... paint.
akcel 01-11-2008 12:53 AM

dry carbon is nice :)
stever 01-12-2008 02:13 AM
dry carbon is nice :)
Cha-ching. I made the molds from carbon assuming that I'd make them out of pre-preg, but the price is just too ridiculous. It used to be around $15/sq ft per ply before the price of carbon went up. I'm sure it's close to $30 or $40/sq ft now. It would probably end up being something close to $8000 just in carbon. Yikes.
wrxsnowstyle 01-12-2008 04:49 AM

ooh. subscribed to the 7 year thread...22b is always worth it.
will there be a full fiberglass version?
Yes, fiberglass and carbon.

The kit started out being a 22B replica kit and ended up being more of a WRC replica. The bumpers are WRC replicas and the fenders are sort of an amalgam between the 22B and the WRC. The wheel on the front left is an 8x18" speedline tarmac wheel, so there's definitely a ton of room for more.

So far no 4 door. It's a major PITA to extend the door jam properly, but I might do it in the near future if these sell well enough. I'll have these parts posted in the vendors section as soon as my Aerosim Research Ltd. vendors account is renewed.

Oh yeah, the parts in the pics are the test parts. Basically the first parts out of the molds and are just taped in place on my car. They are not fitted or trimmed completely. When fitted and bolted/bonded on they will match perfectly, although they are pretty damn close just held on by tape.

dont extend the door jam then. . . there are other ways to make a 4 door widebody. just make this one have a way to access the rear door handles or relocate them into the new door skins so that its legal in my state.

This is my next mod. Saving up now for the FG version

i actually do most often; and i do as of now like the 4dr but i go back and forth. just make the rear doors swell out but meet in the same place bottom and glassside. it may even make the 1/4 panels look better that way.

HTautos is making a 4 door rear with door handles but yours looks much better and money is just money. besides im sure since it took 7 years for this one; in 3.5 years to finish the back half of another one? whos to say how much money ill have to throw around

hah :p just playing with you. but really id like to see what you do with a 4dr

Wow, the widebody kit doesn't even match the color of the car, WTF is up with that? And look at those widebody pieces barely hanging on with the Uline packing tape, you can't even drive over 10mph with that kit or it'll fly off. Good for nothing Misorea Love Co.!

Yeah, I guess I would use the rear doors if someone put them on my car. It wouldn't be too much hassle to make the kit work for a 4 door. I'd have to mold some extensions to the door jams that would get bonded on to the fenders. I would have to make some inserts that could go into the mold so I could make a front half and a rear half of the rear fender. Let's just hope it doesn't take 3.5 years. I don't want to wait that long either.
Thread got my hopes up :sadbanana:
Am I missing something here? The fenders are done. I'm starting to produce them. My car isn't finished, but the fenders are. I have one fender done in carbon, but I was waiting for a complete carbon kit to post pics.
does not look very great..
Any comments on how I should make it better? Maybe make it look like an '08?
its neither finished nor in Carbon yet...
It's finished, but I have not finished the first carbon set. I'm going to be laying up carbon parts over the next couple of weeks. I'll post pics as they go if people want to see them. The first carbon kit is going on my car and I'll post pics of the install as it goes.

Awesome job Steve, can't wait to see your finished CF pieces!
Thanks Ben. You're to blame, it was your crappy Uline packing tape. Just so nobody thinks that I'm leaving it like that ... the first set was a test set to get the molds seasoned and to figure out what kind of vacuum and layup schedule to use for the parts. They're not production pieces, but they are dimensionally the same. I just taped them to my car so people could see what the kit looks like on a car. It's only temporary and will be replaced by a carbon kit in the next few weeks.

I'll post pics of that as it happens, including pics of how the rear fenders are modified for clearance, etc.

And for those who are pissed off because this took so long, I'm sorry. There was nothing I could do, but at least I didn't give up. I doubt that many of you would dump as much time and money into this without throwing in the towel.

Thank you. They're released ... I just posted in the Vendor For Sale area last night. I should be able to get one complete set done a week, give or take.
Quick question, Will the Rear fenders and sideskirts be available? Or is it an all or nothing deal?
Well, the side skirts with the rear fenders and rear bumper might fit the 22B front fenders, but I can't guarantee it. Shouldn't be too hard to do a bit of massaging to the side skirts to make them fit. Hopefully it doesn't look too weird since the wheel well opening is bigger on these fenders than the 22B and stock RS.

Anyway, I don't have a problem selling the rear fenders and skirts. You would need the rear bumper though. Nothing else will fit the fenders.

Ooops ... answered your post on the other thread. The parts that you'll see pics of are solid bondo. I haven't made any of them yet, but the kits have carbon or fiberglass skirts ... not 10 pound bondo skirts.

I didn't even realize that there weren't any decent pics of the whole rear bumper. Sorry about that I'll post some on the other thread as well. Didin't even think of taking pics of the rear bumper for some reason.
