My reverse lock out rattle is DRIVING ME INSANE.
IS there a fix for this?
My knob would vibrate like a woodpeckers' beak.
I installed a series of shift extenders and knobs, looking for the best match.
During this time I must have lost the pin that is in the reverse lockout.
Once I figured out that the missing pin was the problem,I slid a like size object in, then I clipped the extended ends off with a wire cutter.
No vibrations now.
It is a temp fix as it is not a flush tight fitting pin.

Suspension Rattle? Maybe?

I've got a rattle that I've been trying to nail down for a while... Every time I upshift shift from 3rd to 4th there is a rattle coming from the right rear fender area. I get the same noise occasionally shifting between other gears, or occasionally when engine braking down a hill... It kinda sounds like a woodpecker going crazy in there. When shifting the noise lasts about a 1/2 second. When coasting downhill its pretty constant.
Has anyone experienced something like this, or have any ideas? Or if this has been solved in another thread please point me in the right direction.
Trunk rattle from subwoofer:
I had a rattle that I couldn't hear in the cabin, but when I opened the trunk and had something with heavy bass playing, it was rattling like crazy. There are two "vents" of some sort on both sides of the trunk behind the interior liner, right behind both rear wheels. It's a black, square shaped unit with small squares cut out and thin pieces of plastic that rest against it. It's hard to describe, but when the bass would hit, the little plastic strips would rattle. They're meant to be loose I think, allowing air in to the trunk or something. I just took a couple pieces of foam and wedged them in there so that each little vent would stay open. Anyways, if you have a crazy rattle in the trunk, look behind the interior panels on the sides and you'll see what I'm talking about. It doesn't rattle now.
THANK YOU!!! I had the exact same problem. When loud bass is playing you can't hear it from the cabin, but from the outside it rattles like crazy. I will try this out tomorrow, hopefully it works!

i haven't read all 22 pages of this thread but i'm having loud annoying sounds coming from the rear deck/window. i checked the deck and it was loose around the center car-seat anchor so i tried stuffing some socks from inside the trunk. it decreased the amount of noise but it is not gone altogether.
i checked my rear window while keeping the trunk open i grabbed the very bottom of the rear window from the outside (where the "AWD" sticker is) and i lifted it up to see if it would move and it moved almost to the point where i can stick my fingers through the gap.
so basically i need to know how to fix this, do i need to do something with the plastic molding strip that runs the length of the top of the car and down each side and remove them and put silicone to seal it up? or are there going to be any screws once i get in there?
thanks for the help guys

My windows rattle when they are lowered, but not when they are all the way down. It's horrible! Does anyone have a fix? I've also read through this entire thread but this did not show up at all.

Mine do this as well. It's a plague I guess when you don't have a full window frame. This happened in my Celica and it's happening again in my WRX. I have no solution except turn the music up haha.

Have yours always done that or did it develop over time? If so that would imply that's it's something that can be corrected. I guess I'll strip the door cards and take a look.

I'm not really sure. They may have happened over time, but I am used to the noise occurring. If anything, you could tighten the window guides I believe.

Guys I'm having a rattle near the drivers A pillar vent. When I press down on the VIN number plate on my dash it goes away, I tried tightening the VIN plate but they are just pins and not actually screws of any sort...i think.
anyway i know its listed here somewhere that others have this problem...have we fixed it?!?!?!?!?! please help. I find myself far too often leaning up and pushing down probably way to hard and in frustration when driving...this probably isnt a good thing. thanks!!!

I just fixed a rattle that I thought was in the glove box, turns out it was actually the metal cover over the ECU in the passenger foot well being a little loose.

Try sticking a match or a thin piece of cardboard underneath it. Even a wadded up piece of kleenex sometimes works....;)

Those square black panels are in ALL cars. They let the pressure out of the cabin when all the windows are up and someone closes a door. Whatever you do, DON'T tape them closed!

For all you 08+'s out there.
A-pillar rattle: I took the plastic completely off to check the wiring for the air-bags, and foamed and taped up all of the connections. Rattle was still there. Turns out, it's the base of the actual plastic pillar itself where it meets the dash. Subaru taped little thin pieces of foam to the bottom legs, but those things probably shifted or fell off when it was really hot in the summer time. Re-apply foam to that area, and the rattle should go away.

My wagon hatch rattles just going over bumps.
I took everything out of the back and drove around and it was still making noise from the back and so I started pulling on the hatch from the outside and it moves a bit even when closed and rattles.
I'm thinking I might try adjusting the latch to see if that helps, but if anyone else has any suggestions I'm open.

I had the same problem for two years and finally got pissed and took off the rear hatch cover and the rear wiper motor mount bolts were loose!! I tightened these up and locktitied them and the ride is silent now:banana:
wrap some electrical tape around the U shaped latch thinggy if you get a little rattle from the latch

i drive about 20 miles to school everyday and they were repaving the road and it was all hacked up the whole ride. after driving on it for a week i got a bad buzzing rattle. when in the drivers seat it sounds like its the pass window. almost like glass on metal but when in the pass seat it sounds like its comming from the dash. its hard to find because when you sit in different spots the sound seems to come frome different areas. idk what to do

I've been reading on the defroster panel vent by the windshield rattling on Imprezas. Does anybody know how to remove it in a 2008 Outback? I've got a horrible rattling by the windshield and that could be the clips holding the defroster panel down. If somebody has successfully pried this out, please let me know. Thanks

well I signed up for the service manual pdfs and it looks like the whole dash will have to come apart to get to these clips but I did find the service bulletin on how to do this so maybe I'll take it to the dealership this time.

I'm trying to do the scooby mod thread to remove the defrost trim and silicone the white clips. My car has a sun / temp sensor though in the defrost trim which doesn't seem to want to pop out. Anyone know how to remove / disconnect it?
I tried removing the clock pod to see if there was a clip inside the dash... all i could see was vent tubbing though.
Anyone ever tried to disconnect that little sensor before?
thanks

ive got a rattle i havent seen on here yet...
its in the drivers side door, around the armrest area (almost sounds like it could be where the window is. its very noticeable with bass-ey music playing or if the car hits a low tone from the engine making it vibrate.
also, around where the center console is (in the area of where the ciggarete lighter and the ash tray are) it sounds like there is something rolling around in that area (like when i stop you can hear it rolling forward then when accelerating it rolls back)
and then it also sounds like it could be comming from the drivers side rocker pannel.
ive got no idea whats going on with it

well i've just spent like the last hour and a half reading through this thread and i'm more confused than when i started. :unamused:
I am a member of the "elite" group known as "wierd rattle from 2000 to 2500-ish rpm in the engine bay" and I've read everything from wastegate flutter to loose heatshield to crack heatshield all the way to really loud EBC (electronic boost controller).
I'm at the end of my wits with this sht :furious:, has anyone in the great wide universe of nasioc actually figured out what this is?? I seems like most people have figure out solutions to thier rattles but this seems to be the elusive unicorn of rattles. People recognize it and make assumptions but no one seems to have a definite answer, and i've searched up and down nasioc so please dont tell me to google.
and of course the subaru dealership here, has twice said that theres nothing wrong with the car yet everyone who rides in my cars asks what that noise it. hell the tech that did the ride along *twice!!* says he doesnt hear anything...:sadbanana:
here's my stats:
2007 WRX Sedan
5 spd
Turbo XS ABE ( noise was present before the exhaust was put on)
if you have some real advice/direction as to where to go with this please pm me so that way i can try and resolve this issue.

I had the exact problem you did and it drove me insane. Here is what I have done and it is completely gone. I have an aftermarket dp and have removed the heatshield that covers the turbo. This solved it. I had a heatshield bolt a little loose and that is what was rattling. So replace the dp and take off the heatshield and you should be rattle free :)

so im guessing the general concensus is that it's the turbo heat shield because i damn near lost my mind checking my lower heat shields ie cats downpipe uppipe crossover headers and i couldnt find any that were loose. i looked at the turbo shield but it didnt seem loose.

Try to let dealer fix rattles if you still have warranty

I was in doubt if any of the dealers would be patient enough to fix all the rattles I've had so far on my 09 WRX. Guess what, with two visits and a few days wait, the dealer I went to fixed all of them. I'm a happy new car driver now (until I get other rattles which I'm sure I will, of course). You may need some time to find a good and friendly service place, but to me it's definitely worth a few trials.

So from what i read the only "possible" fix for the rear view mirror/compass was to somehow fill silicone in the cracks...
and another problem I have that i couldnt find was that i have this kinda "poping" sound that almost sounds like a tapping a hammer on thin metal when i accelerate or stop at slow speeds (parking lots)...coming frmo right rear. Someone mentioned to me maybe rear diff bushings? thought i would ask before purchasing. Everyhting else is tight.
thanks.

Hey
I've got this rattle/knocking noise coming from the left rear of the car. It only happens over uneven road surfaces, or when i turn right--> It doesn't make the sound over speed bumps or anything like that. It sounds like its coming from somewhere in between the rear seats and the trunk.
I took it to the subaru dealership and they're saying its the strut... Has anyone experienced this before or know what this could be??
Thanks

Wonderful, So I am thinking of selling my fd rx7 that is a rattling monster and thinking of possibly picking up subie and now I have this to look forward to.

It's really not that bad. You eventually get used to most of them, or fix the ones that drive you crazy like this one.

There was a rattle that I've been trying for a year to identify. I've crawled underneath the car probably like 10 times, but failed to identify it. It turned out one of the exhaust bracket that my subaru dealer found for $20.
My car is close to rattle free now even though car is 9 years old.

This is similar, but not a rattle. Anybody ever thought there was a static noise coming from their door tweeters?
That's what I originally thought but it's actually a certain wind noise coming from around the window where it slides up into that black plastic sleeve by the mirror... can't get rid of it!! (unless I open the window)

i had something kinda like that. except mine was the rubber on the mirror that you can see from the inside when the door is closed. it was ripped/cracked. had to use some electrical tape to shape it around the window again and that solved it. need to redo it soon. the tape isnt super durable.

Ok just seeing if anyone has any ideas:
Rattle developed after first autox of the season, I have been all through the interior and underneath the car and everything looks ok.
Mods at the time for suspension:
F&R sway bar/endlinks
Bushings
Noise was not there before and was there after an autocross so something must have happened.
Since then I have added springs, stiffer from sway bar and more bushings and the noise has been consistant. I ruled out:
Hood, Hatch, Interior plastic, rear bumper, front bumper, sway bars, shocks/struts, springs, exhaust (noise there with 3 different downpipes and 2 different catbacks), heat shields
Basically it sounds like it is under the car more towards the front and only occurs at speeds of 30mph or more and only when I hit a quick bump. It is a consistent sound and occurs during turns and going straight over bumps. Best way to describe the noise is like a desk drawer as if it were bouncing rappidly against the desk while closing. So 3 or 4 rattles in a row and thats it.
This is an 08+ STI, anyone have something similar? It is getting rather annoying, I plan on having a shop look at it eventually but will probably not go to subaru.

Hey I might know whats causing this sound you have. Is yours a wagon by chance?
If so, it the tailgate rubbin against the rear bumper/frame. So really, the sound is metal rubbing on metal. What I did to rectify this problem was I got some Automotive Weatherstripping and flat circle rubber sticky pads(used to put under furniture legs) and applied them to certain point on the rear.
The weatherstripping I applied on the sides and on the bottom where the tailgate meets the rear. The circle rubber sticky pads i applied to where those circle rubber grommets hits on the rear.
I know pics might help, let me know if you need them.

^^ Actually, I noticed on my wagon recently that those rubber bump stop things on the hatch door are threaded into their holes. You can adjust them accordingly. That said, I don't think his STi is a wagon.
joeytheking:
Have you checked for any worn bushings that may be allow ing metal on metal rubbing?

Hey guys,
I'm new here and recently purchased a 2011 Impreza 2.5i LTD Sedan. Now a rattle has developed in what seems to be near the rear passenger side corner. Now after riding around in the trunk with my friend driving, it seems to be coming from in between the plastic behind the rear seats and the metal brackets in the trunk. The sound resembles a thin metal wire hitting a piece of metal...what could this be?
I'm thinking it may be this:
2. Rear window rattle - This seems to be the seat bracket
Solution - Take the reat seat back out. The center latch on the seat rattles against the hook bolt. Put some dynamat or some durable thick rubber on top of the bolt head. *note* i put dynamat, it worked for a few months.. but it wore through.. and started ratteling again.. next will be piece of thick leather.
But it still happens when all rear seats are folded down.
Does anyone have any other ideas????
Thanks,

Cruised today on the fwy in the rain. Randomly (and never before), a rattle occurred from the front end. It was louder than the radio at about level 10 volume. Sounded like plastic hitting the wheel, one of those un-even yet repetitive sounds. Also it sounded like you would splash the pipe with high pressure wash (water being splashed onto DP from the wheel at high speeds?!?!?). Got off the gas, it went off. Immediately took it to the shop. While pulling up to the shop went through the puddle of water to try and re-create the sound and it happened again. At the shop put it on the lift, had it inspected and nothing: everything is tight, no leaks, splash guard solid and secured. A mechanic took it out for a spin, found nothing.
Going home, at about 70mph again, rattle.
Rain, tranny, clutch, dp?
any feedback related to the topic is welcomed, thanks.

the rearview mirror (possible) fix:
not sure about subarus, never taken one apart but what could be so different about the mechanism of it, right? i had a friend with honda accord, he took one apart because it was wobbly up and down. theres an anchor inside, which you can manially re-anchore, tighten to keep it steady.
im not 100% sure itll be a fix for YOU but it worked for him.

Steering colum rattle gone! WOOHOO

I just wanna say a huge thank you to whoever was the first person to isolate this most annoying rattle that was in fact the spring in the cruise control assembly. I took the lever apart and 'stretched' the spring like you guys recommended and the rattle is GONE! And for that I say 'Thank you NASIOC' this is just one of many helpful tips/repairs I've learned from this site. I took apart my whole steering colum trying to figure out where this noise came from, I would've never guessed it was a stupid little spring in the cruise control arm!!! :furious:

I just fixed a rattle that has been driving me ape **** for the last 1 and a half years. It's a clicking/clacking coming from what seemed like the strut tower on the passanger side rear. After stuffing a buddy in the pass through in the backseat and driving around, we isolated the noise to a bolt that holds two panels together below the plastic cover on the rear decklid.
After tightening the crap out of the bolt the noise was not nearly as prevalent but was still there over big bumps. I bought a roll of RaamMat and did the entire underside of the rear decklid and I haven't heard a sound since.
I was ready to sell the car because of this rattle.

Rattle that sounds like plastic on plastic coming from (I think) behind the dimmer switch/mirror controls to the left of the wheel on the dash. Any ideas?

ok so i have been reading thru the thread and have done almost what everyone has suggested and nothing is working. For months now there seams to be a metal on metal" clunking rattling ticking noise coming from my back seat area. at first i thought because i have removed the rear seats so often that i just had to securely tighten all the bolts down and align everything the right way but the noise is still there. i removed the seat once again and drove around and the noise is there and extremely louder. so i figure the seat is muffling the noice and therefore its not the seat. i had found this post.....
Take the reat seat back out. The center latch on the seat rattles against the hook bolt. Put some dynamat or some durable thick rubber on top of the bolt head. *note* i put dynamat, it worked for a few months.. but it wore through.. and started ratteling again.. next will be piece of thick leather.
which bolt head is he/she talking about. theres nothing but bracket-like structures underneath the seat. and is this the most likely problem ?

How do you fix the rattle from the cargo cover on the hatch? Someone said electrical tape but I'm not sure where you put it. Anyone have any pics?

This one's been driving me crazy for some time now. It's coming right out of the rear passenger seat belt anchor in the c pillar. It's a buzzing metallic/plastic sound. I don't know how to remove that panel without breaking it.

Has anyone tried to pop the driver's side defroster vent out on a 2009 Impreza?
Or has anyone had it fixed under warranty at a dealership?
Mine squeaks like crazy, I've been cranking the heat even in the summer to get it to stop!
thanks much:D
