My back window got quiet with the warmer weather, so hopefully I'll only have to put up with it during the colder months. Unfortunately, I just developed the VIN plate rattle. Frikin' grrrrrrr.

Engine Bay rattle

Seems that when I am in a high gear and start to engine brake, I get a rattle directly behind the center dash.
I am hoping it is a loose pitchmount or engine mount...heck...it could be the tranny mounts possibly.
+1 for one of the best threads put together. Great job!
I have one in the fromt passenger door pocket. When there is a song with bass it will vibrate. So far my fix has been stuffing a little towel in there to absorb the sound, Ive been meaning to take off that panel to see what vibrates behind the pocket. LOL
I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND IT DROVE ME NUTS!
the dealer fixed it for me and they said it was from a lining between the speaker and the door card getting unattached and resting on the speaker, therefore when the speaker moves from bass the door panel rattles. I had the towels too haha.

Just take it to the dealer and show them, i'm sure they'd help you get it out for less than 500 bucks. But if i had to guess i'd say turbo turbine.

Make sure it's the VIN Plate that's actually rattling. If it's not, then do the fix a lot of people have done already. Take off the long vent trim piece along the windshield and apply silicon to all of the white plastic clips.

Also check to see if it's your cupholder. I'm troubleshooting a current rattle/squeak that I originally thought was my HU (I have the OEM gauge pod housing my HU), but now I have pinpointed it to the cupholder. Every time I eject the cupholder, the noise goes away. Something is obviously loose back in there - I just gotta find a ghetto fix for it :)

I also have the infamous vin plate area rattle. Unfortunately, the normal silicone fix, which works for most, does not work for my case. 04 STI. I basically tried everything I can think of.
1. silconed the clips
2. Lined vin plate and area underneath with dynamat
3. Lined contact with thin weather strip
4. One day I got so irritated, I even chopped off the left most white clip from the vin plate, lol.
The rattle only appears on the driver side. It's gone when pressure is applied on vin plate or when vin plate is pulled up.
Your input is greatly appreaciated.

yep same as mine on an '04 rex. I haven't tried the other things you have but now that I know they don't work I won't. I had thought about making an indention in the VIN plate and hopefully that would create enough pressure on it to not rattle. who knows? good luck. Greg
My sti rear-view mirror rattles and buzzes when the bass hits. My stereo is not bass heavy. Rattle sounds start at about volume level 25 on the stock deck. It makes everthing sound like crap. If i want to hear the music i can hold the mirror steady wth my hand. Anyone have a solution? I cant tell if something inside the mirror is making the noise, or if the mirror rattles against the windsheild at the mount. Anyone ever tried to take one of these mirrors apart?
I have a dimming/compas mirror so there is a wire coming out of it that goes between the roof and roof trim. Also, that wire is covered by a piece of plastic that covers the wire and the mirror mount; it comes off pretty easily if you take a closer look at it. It seems when I remove that plastic piece the mirror rattle goes away. I tried putting some silicon on the underside of that plastic trim so it does not directly touch the windshield and that worked for some time, but than the rattle came back. So now it seems that its a combination of the mirror wire rattling against the roof and/or that plastic piece. I managed to mount that plastic piece snugly and havent had the rattle since. I would suggest pressing down on that plastic piece to see if rattle goes away, than temporarily removing it as you try to pin down the problem. Good luck!

I would suggest completely removing the trim piece and drive around without it for several days. If the rattle is gone, then you know where to attack it. In my car, I have a rattle that I *thought* was the trim piece but ends up being something under the dash! I'm thinking of stuffing some stiff foam in between the pillar and the dash since the rattle seems to go away if I put a light pressure on the dash near the defroster outlet.
I've found that the easiest way to isolate rattles is to sequentially remove trim pieces until the rattle goes away. Then it's just a task of finding out what part of the removed part(s) needs to be quieted.
A good example of this is a light rattle I had in the rear of the car. I removed the entire rear interior trim and it still remained. It ended up being the seatbelt reels which there was nothing I could possibly do about it. So, knowing that, I knew no amount of changes to the trim pieces was going to actually solve that rattle.

So did we determine if there is a solution to this rattle yet? I have it as well and it is so annoying! It got up to 45 or so and it was still there this weekend. Has anyone taken it to the dealer? Mine is still under a year old, so it should be covered for something like this, right?
OK, just took a drive with my girlfriend so I could find out exactly where my rear-window (the very back one, technically called a "back-light") rattle/tapping is coming from and hopefully describe it in detail.
I'm almost 100% positive that it's coming from the joint where the back window meets the roof under the headliner. When I pull the headliner down the sound definitely gets louder. It may also be coming from the side and bottom rear-window joints, but I can't get my head close enough to those areas to be certain...lol.
The best way I can describe the sound is like several girls tapping their fingernails on a desk, but really fast, so fast in fact, that it almost sounds like a scraping sound at times. The sound is quite brite, and certainly suggests that the joints holding the rear-window in are compromised.
Has anyone fixed this one?
i took mine to a local, and highly reputable, glass place to inquire about possible solutions and the best they could offer was trying to remove the window and then reseal it. our rear windows aren't really held in by any moulding, so the suggestion that thicker moulding would solve it, won't work. the moulding that is present is there primarily for cosmetic and protection of the seals around the window: not actually anchoring it persay. their assessment was that the glue holding the window down was coming free and that the window was, as we all describe it, rattling. they quoted $100 to remove the window and reseat/glue it...but that was if they could resue the window as removal will sometimes crack the glass itself.
one question/clarification i would like to make: does anyone have this rattling who HAS NOT upgraded their suspensions at all?
the rattle seems most prevalent on vehicles with stiffer suspensions...causing the body/chassis to absorb more impact and flex more, potentially loosening the rear window with the increased flexing...

Yeah get a louder stereo. LOL Naw that whole deck is always causing ugly noises for me too. Next time I pull the rear seat for something..fuel pump or whatever..I'll prolly put some extra sound deadener on the insides of the deck lid. Also check your springs. I had a noise coming from outside near the tops of the springs where they met up with the mount. Retighten your strut tops. Does it feel loose when driving.?

pay attention to the rear window rattle guys. a local NESIC guy had a rattle similar to what we've been discussing and it got worse and worse until, unfortunately, he was able to lift the rear driver's side corner of the window completely off the car. luckily, it didn't fall out and it cost him $100 bucks at a local glass place to have it reset...just an FYI...

I've had the super annoying rear windshield rattle since mile 400 on a stock 2004 sti. Took it to the dealer and got them to "agree" that the noise did seem to be coming from the window/frame seal... they then basically just refused to do anything about it because it is after all, just an annoying noise, and they would have had to remove/re-seat the window to "maybe" fix it... I tried the argument of a "compromised" seal, which could eventually lead to water ingress etc... NO DICE! (Santa Monica Subaru btw)
i've been living with it for 2 years now. Sucks, cuz other than this, the other rattles are frikin kid stuff...

Why not talk to someone directly at Subaru. Talk to someone on their internet site. I usually find it easier to kill someone with kindness over an email carefully explaining your situation. I do warranties for all types of vendors because I work at a wholesaler. Over the phone and in person can be tricky depending on the certain individual you may encounter. Try going directly for the head of the beast. Explain that you were inquiring to get another 2006 STi but before you sold yours you wanted to have yours fixed. If they don't want to lose a valuable and faithful customer they may think twice. They may not but it's a shot. Someone should try it.

Metallic squeak from passenger quarter window

On my '00 RS coupe I had a high pitched metallic squeak that was caused by a loose nut holding the quarter glass trim to the body. It is on a long stud that can be reached using needle nose pliers or a deep socket (7mm, I think).

Ok, i just found a rattle the other day. Ive thought it was the vent or the vin plate, but i found it was actually my sun visor that was rattling where it met the headliner. I tried tightening the screw but they were as tight as could be. Im going to try a rubber bushing type thing and see if it helps. those of you having the vin rattle that wont seem to fix, check the visor.

Use a flathead wrapped in a towel or rag so you don't scratch the dash. I usually start from the passenger side. Just pop it up from the passenger side and work your way to the driver side and the whole piece comes off. Those white clips you will see cause a lot of the rattles. Take the white clips off and apply a little rubber cement to where it attaches. Put the clips back on let dry. I got that off of Scoobymods.com
While that's going on you may want to put a little something under the VIN as that rattles sometimes. I put a small length of bicycle inner tube and that worked fine.
i have an appointment to bring mine in next week for the rear window, i'll let you guys know what happens.
so i was at the dealer for 2.5 hours while they tried to fix the rattle. they completly dismantled the back seats and rear deck and i drove him around to listen. there was one rattle coming from the baby seat hook on the top deck. he also tightened and lubed pretty much every bolt back there. they thought they got it, but weren't sure, and said to bring it back if it was still there. i left the dealer, and noticed the noise right away. So i went back to the dealer. Apparently the noise is coming from 2 body pannels that are crimped together, i think he said the outer and innner fender? They're going to have to get in there, and put some seam sealer between the pannels, there must've been a spot missed in manufacturing. They need to order some parts, like new window trim, because they have to take the rear window out to make sure that it doesn't break when working on it. So I'm going to take it back in next week when they have the parts, it'll take 2 days or so and they'll give me a loaner. All under warranty. I'll post a followup once i have more results.

Am I the only one who has a rattle in the ashtray? Haven't looked too seriously into a fix. I just leave it pulled out a bit.

Well, at least I have a possible cure for the door panel rattles. Not knowing, of course, why your particular panel is rattling (what speakers you have, etc). But IAPerformance sells some extended panel pins that would probably help you. They hold the panel out away from the door just a bit.

Well I just got done going through this thread and applying a lot of the fixes but I have not gone for a ride yet. I did Raammat the trunk lid and took out the insied trunk release and Raammetted behind that. I did notice that the small rod for the key trunk release rattled quite a bit so I split some 5/16 fuel hose and slid around it.
Is there anything in the hinges for the trunk lid?? If you just let the trunk swing open you can hear something and I think that I isolated it to the hinges??
I also put some foam stripping around the fuse holder so it quit rattling quite a bit. I will report more after a drive.
Later Super

A few weeks of searching and I finally found a rattle that was drilling holes into my sanity. This one was a doozie to nail down. Sounded like it was coming from the rear passenger door, but I couldnt' get a good bead on it.
I shut myself in the trunk with a flashlight and hammer, pulled off side skirts, removed and reinstalled everything. Finally put the car up on jack stands, ran through the gears and idling in 6th gear (wheels spinning at 40 ish making me really nervous) I poked the whole undercarriage with a prybar and found the bastard.
On the STi there is a chintzy tin shield up and over the rear yoke/driveshaft area and exhaust to protect the gas tank. Contoured up into the tranny tunnel. It's held in with 4 10mm nuts nad a couple of plastic pins. And it's not removeable without destruction or removal of a lot of the drivetrain... and I didn't want to expose the fuel cell to god-knows-what reason it was put there in the first place. Heat?
Anyway, those plastic pins are now loc-tite'ed 14mm bolts with huge shoulder washers on them. And several square feet of a thermo-wrap sheet has been threaded between the shield, the tank, and the drivetrain, pinched and RTV'd into place. The 10mm nuts are in place at 51 ft/lbs.
SERENITY NOW! Wow. What a difference. Smooth like a cadillac now. Thanks for that super thin metal Japan! :furious: You buncha nancies!
Anyone ever tried to take one of these mirrors apart?
for the mirror - What I did initially, was I took two thin stips of dynamat and pressed it into the top and bottom seam on the mirror housing... this worked for a while - then I got a bigger system and the buzzing started again... Then I taped up the majority of the mirror with masking tape - and took clear silicone sealant and squirted a little bit into the seam of where the mirror (itself) came into contact with the mirror housing - If you press gently (GENTLY) on the mirror - you will see it come away from the housing just enough to squirt in some silicone... let it dry, remove the masking tape and you will have a BUZZ PROOF mirror... its proven!

Alright, it's fixed! They ordered the parts (new window trim i think). I dropped the car off on monday, and just picked it up now wednesday evening. They supplied me with a rental car for the 3 days. According to the sheet i got, they took out the rear window to tighten body pannels at the left C pillar, they secured and isolated the wiring harness and antenna booster in the same area. they secured the panels under, next to, and behind the rear seat and rear area of headliner. They aren't sure exactly which of those fixes fixed the clicking, but it is gone. A big thumbs up to Dunning Subaru in ann arbor, for putting so much effort to fix what was ultimately an annoyance!
so i was at the dealer for 2.5 hours while they tried to fix the rattle. they completly dismantled the back seats and rear deck and i drove him around to listen. there was one rattle coming from the baby seat hook on the top deck. he also tightened and lubed pretty much every bolt back there. they thought they got it, but weren't sure, and said to bring it back if it was still there. i left the dealer, and noticed the noise right away.
I found and fixed a rattle that was right behind the "OH SHIII" handle on the drivers side. This has been the most annoying rattle to me that I have ever heard!! I actually started punch that handle one day leading to a bloody knuckle. Its a very distinct metal rattle and it sounds like it might be a loose nut behind that roof handle. You have to remove thea pillar housing, the visor, roof handle, and peel back the headliner. Be very careful pulling on the headliner as its super thin. There is a "spring steel" bracket back there that will rattle against the car body. I simply pryed it away from the body a little bit and I am rattle free so far!!

I found the "VIN plate rattle" It in fact does not have anything to do with the actual VIN plate. The rattle is coming from the vent pointed at the driver side window. The vent tube is an attachment to the main vent. The point where the smaller vent tube slides into the main vent was causing friction. Thats why when you push down on the VIN you are actually placing pressure indirectly onto the dash piece that holds the defogger vent and the rattle goes away

The Solution: Remove the defogger vent. Then wrap it with Adhesive-backed felt on the outer tube area. The felt was purchased at Wal-Mart for $.79 its in the crafts area. Re-install tube and presto!
Results: No rattle, well at least not that one anymore

Somewhere on my passenger door is a rattle. At least I think its there. It's either there or the glove box, although if I drive with the glove box open, I still hear the rattle. I think its my passenger side door.
I'm reading the description for the rattle posted in post#1 regarding the passenger door rattle and I have no idea what its talking about. Anyone have a pic of that?

I might play with it tomorrow depending on the weather, its supposed to storm here. I can hear the rattle when I have my stereo moderately loud (when the bass kicks in) so I figure thats the main cause, but there might be more to it than just the speakers.
I also hear a loud click/knock on the passenger's side whenever I turn my headlights on and off. Any ideas why this is???

Does it sound like a relay? That would be my only guess.

mine happens regardless of the stereo being on or off. It also only happens when I'm going moderately fast >=55mph, so basically on highway. You guys similar?
