Can we get a "fix those rattles" thread going? part 8

drewzter 10-09-2007 07:39 PM

Buzzzing
I have this rattling sound, almost a buzzing that occurs whenever I let out the clutch and the engine pulls a little. It sounds like the fron lisense plate but I checked it twice. And it only does it when I drive so I can't see it from outside.

Any Ideas anyone?
Buzzing on power could be an header/uppipe leak.

I got two rattles that need solving, first when I shut my driver side door I get a slam (from the door) then a squeek, I tried lubing the hinges, but to no avail. Also when I shut the rear driver side door on my wrx wagon, the area around the rear hatch/rear wiper rattles like crazy!! Help,or I'll go insane!!
Two things come to mind that you did not mention. First one is Post 406. Check that and then check the trunk latch. It is adjustable. It slides up and down for engagement/tightness.
I'm going to try both of these tonight or tomorrow to fix the stupid rattle I have coming from the back of my 07' WRX...will report results!
eurospek 11-07-2007 07:50 PM

So apparantly it wasn't the AP banging in the glovebox, since it's getting colder the rattle is getting more and more annoying, and IMO it's coming from below the glovebox or front passenger door. I'll take the glovebox out over the weekend and see if any cable may be hitting something, and it shouldn't be the DRL connector since I made sure to zip tie to something to avoid a rattle. Any ideas of what it may be, it's more a click than a rattle I would say like plastic against plastic click.
Bondy007 11-11-2007 02:06 PM

^ I have a similar problem.

I also hear a cricket noise. It's not always there, but it gets quiet annoying. Any ideas?
Atomic 11-21-2007 03:42 PM

So i finally got rid of some rattles that were piling up.

Rear shelf "finger nails" on rough roads - in my case the seat belt retraction box - hit with silicon gone.

Shifter rattle, especially in 3rd and 5th gear pulls. this came on after my TIC bushing install, expected some NVH, but not this. Turns out it was the shifter diagram in the top of the shift know, pryed it out and silicon - gone

Left front "vent rattle". Well I had done everything for this one and still had it (took out the defroster vent lower left panel and siliconed and taped all clips, pulled side top vent and wrapped with tape so tight, etc. - none worked). Well took off the kick panel again (the one with fog lights, IC spray, light tilt) and noticed the fog and IC spray were not "snug" and if tapped lightly would replicate the noise I was hearing. wedged a piece of foam between them and it is gone. Why I would go away when pushing on the vents is beyond me, unless it was new after I did the other stuff.

Makes driving the car so much better.

Hope that helps someone.
Bondy007 11-24-2007 03:01 AM

With my 'cricket' noise, I found out its coming from my fan. When I turn my fan off, I don't hear anything, when its on any speed 1-4, I hear it slightly, the faster I move, the louder the sound. I guess its loose, going to try to fix it when I get the car back from the bodyshop!

Hope that helps.

I have this problem in my 06 wagon too. it's driving me nuts... I think the solution for the "cruise control stalk rattle" may be the same, as they're basically the same thing. I'll try it and post my results...
simonbsays 11-24-2007 05:36 AM

Removed the steering column panels, and took out the light/signal stalk... not sure how to take it apart further though... My rattle's coming from the very tip of it, which I'm not able to open up. It stops when I hold on to it :unamused: Since I'm under warranty still, I'll just see what the dealer says.

Thought I'd snap a shot of the stalk:

I didn't notice updated in the first post...and I didn't re-read the whole thread...but what are you guys doing about the rattle that comes from the rear passenger oh **** bar?
Bagelw 11-29-2007 04:30 PM
Okay, since this whole thread is on rattling noises, I figured I might as well ask about my own
I have a regular 2007 2.5iwith nearly 12000 miles on it
My car started making a really strange buzzing noise around 3500rpm, and it would go on for about 200rpm past that, no noise before, no noise after about 3700.
I brought it to Mastro Subaru of Tampa 3 times now, and each time they've said it was the heat sheild, they tighten it, and say the noise is gone. But as I drive the car off the lot, I hear the noise.
It is a noise that is only made when the car is moving.
I've talked to several mechanics, all of them say it is neither an engine, nor a transmission noise. It seems to be coming from the engine bay, when I hear the noise it sounds like it's right from the center of the dashboard.
Anybody have any ideas for next time I bring it in? Any idea what it could be?
Thanks.
Ever get this one figured out? It sounds similar to what my car is doing around 3000 rpm. It sounds exactly like a heat shield vibration but I've checked them all and the dealer has checked them all. The sound seems to be coming from around the turbo but it's hard to tell since it won't repeat the sound on the lift. The dealer claims my turbo is going bye bye but I would think the car would drive differently if that were the case. Anyone have any other ideas?

Bump for this it's driving me nuts, I took off the glovebox over the weekend and it's definitely not the drl plug since now it's definitely zip tied tight, and I could not see anything else loose there to form this constant plastic clicking sounds, and it only emits going over the concrete connections on the highway or over pot holes.

i have a 04wrx, and whenever i switch on my headlights, i hear a loud clicking noise near the passanger glove box. and as its clicking, its also flickering the lights, interior, and headlights. i've been told that its the relay. and i've also been told that its the combination switch. what i dont understand is, how if i change the combination switch, how would that solve the clicking that the relay does. any thoughts?
Seems liek there's a Lot of repeated questions of rattles.

So I'll just list what I got from various threads.

SOLVED

1. Steering column rattle - This seems like it's the Cruize control button.
Solution - Take stalk apart, remove button, spring and ball, stretch spring. reinsert. no more rattle

2. Rear window rattle - This seems to be the seat bracket
Solution - Take the reat seat back out. The center latch on the seat rattles against the hook bolt. Put some dynamat or some durable thick rubber on top of the bolt head. *note* i put dynamat, it worked for a few months.. but it wore through.. and started ratteling again.. next will be piece of thick leather.

3. passenger Door rattle - this seems to be wiring rattleing against the inner door panel or the cover. Use some sticky foam and wrap wires..

4. wagon spare tire rattle thanks "sjl1614" for solution
solution - Where the spare tire "cover" sits down and rests of the plastic trim, right under there, the trim sits on metal tabs. Which is the souce of the rattle. use some foam tape on the metal tabs and the noise is gone - sjl1614

5. Drivers side door handle thanks "Flat4 STI"
solution - Drivers side door handle, where you pull the door closed would rattle. 3m double sided tape on the bottom of it where the screw pokes through.

6. Steering column top plastic rattle thanks "Flat4 STI"
Solution - 3M double sided tape,Once you take off the top piece of plastic, nearest the steering wheel theres a piece of plastic that sticks up,I used two layers to touch the column plastic pieceAlso about the middle of the steering plastic piece i put another piece of 3M there also.Kinda hard to descibe.

7. Rear deck area rattle where third brake light is "Flat4 STI"
Solution - center seat belt plastic cover in trunk was loose, the piece that covers the retract part,Silicone around top edge to hold it in place.

8. high pitch rattle behind ear thanks "gh32"
Solution - Very faint metal-on-metal high-pitched noise that took me a while to identify. Turns out it was the zipper on the passenger seat on the top of the pass-through (roughly behind where your neck is). Easily fixed with a piece of tape.

9. glove box key hole
Solution - try using some thick silicone grease? if the problem is within the lock, if its outside then, remove the unit and add 3M windows seal

10. glove box rattle thanks "hank3"
Solution - I had the glove box rattle and what I did was wrap some black electrical tape around the U-shaped bracket the door latch attaches to. That fixed the rattle

UNSOLVED

1. Seatbelt top cover rattle - I put this on unsolved because to me removing outright is not a solution.

2. Driver side A Pillar, Vent cover - put puressure on the vent cover piece by the A-Pillar and rattle stops. -
Things I tried
- siliconing the white clips..
- taping the vent cover piece to the bottom piece..
- strips of fuzzy side of velcro (helped a bit but still there)
- removing the entire vent cover

*edit you can emulate this sound by pushing down on the vent piece. repeat until you have the right speed and pressure.. the only way i see to solve this it to jam some thick cloth to maintain the pressure, or take the dash apart... i have not done this yet...

3. Steering column rattle - left wheel goes over bumps - when only the left front wheel goes over the bumps the whole steering column shutters... I dont' think there's going to be a solution to this..

4. Rearview mirror - if you have warrenty left then it's all good but what if you don't? any one have a fix for this?

anyone else like to add?
New one to add:MY07: Drivers front door.. sounds like something loose inside panel; front of door where I/P meets door.., or close hold down screw for door panel in general. Not annoying enough to give to dealer yet, but if no soultion found.. will be done well before warranty is out...

Rattle from antenna area... but not antenna
I have an '03 wagon, and I've started to notice this really annoying vibration noise coming from where the antenna is mounted (above driver's side door). But it's not the antenna b/c I can make it stop by pushing really hard (from the inside) on the felt liner (not quite the roof, but just above the driver's window). Anybody else had this problem before? Any ideas on how to get in there to dynamat that piece?
rickr01 12-11-2007 04:20 PM

Addition to vin plate dash rattle
Ok, I found that after I pulled the windshield defroster front trim piece and stopped all the white clips from rattling, I still had a (squeeky when cold) and full fledged (rattle when warm), coming from the drivers side dash that as others mentioned, could be stopped by pressing lightly on the vin plate. I tried all the vin plate tricks and also the drivers window defrost tube trick to no avail. Still there. I then pulled the thin trim that goes between the windshield and drivers door window. I believe it is called the A pillar or something like that. anyway, there is a long plastic tang that slides into a slot at the dash. it was moving up and down and rattling side to side making all kinds of racket. I put some thin foam tape around the tang and put some electrical tape around the foam to hold it securely I re installed it and NO MORE vin area rattle! It's at the very bottom of the trim piece and when you pull it it's an obvious trouble spot.
rickr01 12-11-2007 04:23 PM
I have the same F*CKING problem. Its the piece of plastic that the VIN plate is on. It rattles for me alll damn day. If i just place my hand on it its gone. Someone find a fix for this PLEASE!!

thank you :)
I found the fix. Look farther into the thread. It's a small tang on the bottom of the trim that goes on the A pillar.;)
2007 STi - Noise from Right Rear behind seat.

Ever since the first day I recieved my 2007 STi there has been this rattle that starts at speeds above 40 MPH. The rattle is there regardless of road conditions.

The sound - Its coming from the trunk/gas lid door cable vibrating against the inner fender.

The Fix - Pop the trunk open and loosen the inner trunk liner on the right side and you will find the trunk/gas lid cable. Rap the cable up in some electrical tape to absorb the vibration and tape the cable up to the wire harness next to it. This will not affect the cable's operation at all.

Hope this helps.
Thank you!! that was annoying!

I didn't read through all of these pages but, i got wind noise coming through my driver front side window above 45ish. I have to switch the window down a bit and back up to "seal it better?" its annoying... every time I drive

I think to fix this you could cut the solid tube that comes up from the bottom of the dash board and connect the two pieces with a felxable connector. I think that the rattle is fromt he dash moving independantly of the vent and the vent tube (which is rigid hard plastic).

Haven't had a good look at it yet. Specifically, what is there to tighten?
Airborne Guy 12-25-2007 11:56 AM

There is 2 screws that are on the other side of the steering wheel column that hold the the gauge into place.

Tighten those and see if it works.
txl146 12-25-2007 06:15 PM

Problem: squeaks coming from driver side seat whenever moving body in foward/backward motion with the seat belt on.

Solution: discovered that seatbelt strap was rubbing against the plastic wrap. Just relocate the plastic wrap to eliminate this annoying squeaks.

Yeah! I had this problem (#1)!! I couldn't figure out for the longest time ever what the hell it was. Came out it was making that pop on the floor mat/carpet that I had there (OEM). It slide up a little too high and the pedal was getting caught on it slightly.

I've got a similar sound. Try checking your side air bag connectors under the seat. On my 03 Sedan, the metal brackets and connectors were loose and rattled on bumps. The sound bounces around and I swore it came from the passenger door or glovebox. I fixed it by stuffing some foam between the metal brackets, then taping the plastic air bag connectors with electrical tape.

BUT THEN, I noticed ANOTHER sound coming around under the glove box. Turns out the plastic gears or cogs that route the position the fan blows air to are loose when in the first position. That's the position where it blows air to your face. I could jiggle the cog around to replicate that plastic tapping noise I hear time to time.

So far I have no solution for this but to turn it to the second position (face , legs). the cogs seem tight at that position.

To remove the a-pillar, start up at the top..., just work your finger under the panel and the headliner, and just start to pull towards the rearview mirror. It is attached by a metal clip, and a plastic clip... I think it is almost impossible to break, but just start at the top and start to pull it off. It is pretty easy and i dont think you will break anything. I would worry a lot more about other clips on the car. I think it would be hard to break the a-pillar.

In cold weather my 06 2.5i has a metal cricket sound when underway. If the car isn't moving-no cricket. As near as I can tell its coming from the dash area though untill I can get someone to drive while I poke around it'll be impossible to tell. I do have aftermarket speakers and cd head unit. I also am running STI springs so there is more road transmitted to the cabin but this noise is ridiculus! The noise can be modulated by whats playing on the radio but if I turn it off the noise is still present as long as the car is in motion.

the third brake light is the one in the rear window, not spoiler brake light, i guess the spoiler one is the 4th brake light?

can someone please tell me what is the quick solution to getting rid of all heavy rattles in my doors when i blast some music??? ive tried caulking on all the clips and foam tape around spots that touch but it only slightly helped.

Uh..... no it's not. Actually it depends on what car he has. On my car it's in the spoiler, not the window. His profile is incomplete so we don't know.

does anyone know how to get rid of the stock hoodscoop spliter squeek? It sounds like a cricket and i dont know how to get rid of it. Its the rubber part rubbing on the intercooler i think.

Does anyone know how to look for year of production based on serial number of the car?Is that the last number defines what year it is?

I think I am having this exact rattle. I tried taking off that panel by removing the plastic screw on the side by the door as well as two metal ones I could find under the steering wheel but I couldn't get that panel off. Any help?

Is anyone getting this whistle sound coming from the engine bay? I htought for sure it was my rubber IC splitter but i took it off and it wasnt it. It only happens when your on the gas. Whenever i take my foot off the pedal it stops. I cant stand it.

Also, my glovebox is making this plastic on plastic sounds. I absolutly cant stand it. Anyone got a fix?

Teh turboz :p

Maybe it's coming from the foam stripping that seals the hood to the body when closed. my Prelude had that going on. It was in the back cowl area, just glued the loose peice down and the noise went away.
