2006 SCCA Solo Nationals thread part 4

KC 08-28-2006 11:45 AM

The WRX TR (and sedan) is already 150 lbs lighter than the STi. Everything you can do in STU to an STi to lose weight you can also do in the WRX.

Does that 150 lbs make up for the diffs/HP? Probably not much. But HP isn't everything. You have a longer 2nd gear in the WRX... and every shift on a course is roughly 3/10s a second. If you have an STi that's got to shift twice into/out of 3rd gear, you're looking at a WRX making up about 6/10ths without having to lift a fingah (not a fingah!!!). Fancy diffs on an STi cannot make up time lost from shifting.

makofoto 08-28-2006 12:04 PM

I've always heard that 3/10th ... but I find it hard to believe. And on courses where the two types of cars, STU/STX, stay in 2nd ... they aren't necessarily that far apart ... talking about national level cars and drivers here.

Shifting might cost the STI's a bit of time ... but the ferocious acceleration that they then continue to create makes up for a lot of that shift time. The WRX's are falling on their faces wringing out 2nd gear.

I've been extremely impressed by one of our local ESP Foresters. 2.5 but with the small turbo and five speed ... I guess it's the 6 speed with only five gears? It paxed 8th out of something like 130 drivers recently ... with a driver that was celebrating his one year anniversary in AX'ing.

Chris is now driving a Tahoe and won't be at Nats. He hopes to have a SM2 280Z or some such nonsense for next year, but given the current state of it and his history with project cars, I wouldn't hold my breath ;)
I've always heard that 3/10th ... but I find it hard to believe.
Data loggers don't lie. You can see it right in the logs.
And on courses where the two types of cars, STU/STX, stay in 2nd ... they aren't necessarily that far apart ... talking about national level cars and drivers here.
So you're equalizing the cars? Ok, I'm for that.. makes them even closer. :)
Shifting might cost the STI's a bit of time ... but the ferocious acceleration that they then continue to create makes up for a lot of that shift time. I still think that a WRX can still have a shot. :)

I felt your pain for a long time. I had zero national event trophies (Tours or Nats) until '04. I had many near misses. Two good days in Topeka sealed the deal. On any given day (or pair of days), you're good enough to trophy. This is your year, Karen... I can feel it. :)

Actually Chris is taunting me that he'll have the SM2 Z at an October event this year before I get the blower install done on the Miata. Oh well, not the first time a project of mine took longer than expected. :( It looks like I may have a Pro Finale ride in Clyde's RX-8 if he makes it in. (fingers crossed) If it happens it will be entertaining to see the differences between anRX-8 and the Z. I hear the Mazda doesn't have "ice mode" issues like Chris' Z but that the lack of torque is a major issue.
Wow, what's chris driving? You guys were doing well this year, why sell the car now?
We have had a pretty good 2 years in the Z, though I blew it last year at Nats. This year I'm going to try to stay out of my own head at Nationals, just drive and have fun.
I think part of the issue with the Z was we couldn't find a setup that worked for both of us. Chris tosses a car more and rfb, I'm smoother generally and lfb so when it was loose enough for me Chris had a hard time keeping the car under him. When we had it balanced for him, I had "ice mode" ABS issues trying to maximize braking and rotate it by trail braking. The car is just unbelieveably tight by design and the things to make it work at auto-x wouldn't make it a practical daily driver.

I would have to agree with you KC. Equally 'STU prepped' 2.5L WRXs and STIs should be on relatively equal footing with each other. The WRX will definitely have an advantage in weight and reduced shifts, while the STI will have the better diffs and acceleration. Braking may not be significantly different between the two cars but the STI will probably have a slight advantage (despite the extra 150+lbs).

With that said, if I was going to compete in STU, I'd pick an STI over a 2.5L WRX.

The no-smoking in grid rule only became part of the national rulebook last year I think. Prior to that, it was often in the supps (not sure how long that had been going on, as we only started doing national events in 2004).

Oh, I'm worried about the M3s. Brian Hanchey (1st in STU after day 1 last year) and Terry Fair, in the same car, are really good drivers in a very well prep'd car. If the nationals course is really twisty with lots of transitions I think they'll be tough.

Yeah - I was reading the Vorschlag website last night. Definitely very well prepared and expereinced as well.

It's going to be very interesting to see how everyone compares. Richard Jung is really the only West Coaster who has run STU Nats before. Richard runs mostly in San Diego while Simanyi, Teague and I run mostly in LA, so even we are not totally sure how we compare.
