John,
Like many others here, I've always enjoyed your videos.
Was curious on the type of on-board video cameras you use. Bullet Cam? What do you use as a recording device? (camcorder, hard drive, other?) What suggestions would you make on the upgrade path? Have you used Hard drive devices for capturing?
I've been using an inexpensive little bullet cam made/sold thru ChaseCam.
See example here: Reinmeister Video Quality on these is OK (they say 480 lines) but was interested in your Hi-quality setup.
Questions2: What do the Tv companies use for their high-quality on-board racing shots? Let's say the WRC for example. What do they use to capture the video? Is it streamed by anteane? How expensive is a set-up like that out of curiuosity?
Thanks,
Davis

Figured I'd bring this one back....
Went up to the Nordschleife today and I'm happy to say it's only 1.5 hours away! Wow, what a track. The videos do absolutely no justice to this place, especially wrt elevation changes. Got there at 0800 and thought it was closed...but it wasn't. Since it was still very wet most folks were waiting for it to clear up I guess, because in two hours is was pretty crowded. It's good to have AWD! My worn out RE070s made it a slip n slide at first, but in the dry later they were pretty good.
Lots of fun cars there today a few that caught my eyes: Challenge Stradale 360 and a 911 GT3 RS...and of course the Scoobys. Of which there were 5 or 6 STis.
6 laps and I feel like I barely know the first few turns...

You had to remind me again? Dammit. I'm going to be in Germany in November. I think I'll go visit the ring on the last day it is open. Usually nobody is there, so I can take my happy time around it. Thing is, you have to be mindful of the piles of leaves that gather on the road....

Hi Guys, so sorry for the delay in updating the thread, i have been away from home for 3 months now and finding it hard to keep on top of everything. The good news is i have been back home for a couple of days and aranged for the video raw data to be sent up to me so i could build the menu's and finish the DVD myself as the person doing this for me just hasnt had time.
I installed a DVD burner and a software package onto my home PC to allow me to do the final work yesterday and have just finished the first PAL version, the master is burned and playing away on my TV as i type this. :D Big relief as its working as expected and the menu system works too. :o
I have asked for the raw NTSC video/audio data to be sent to me now and i'll build a master NTSC version next, hopefully that will be done when i get back from the ring next week. So it looks like it's finally ready for duplication in PAL format and should be ready in NTSC format late next week.

Hi Davis, The cameras i used were a mixture of Mini DV, some were normal hand held units, others were seperate recorders with external bullit cams and mic's. I havnt used any hard drive capture systems yet, but should be using a new system based entirly on hard drive/PC technology very soon. I cant say much about it yet as its in its final stages of design, buit it should be quite an impresive setup.
The F1 cars still use streaming data from the cameras, which is picked up via a helicopter link, thats why you see the picture break up when they go under a bridge. WRC cars use similar technology with data sent to an overhead light aircraft, the major cost is in the aircraft and datastream technolgy, rather than the cameras as such.
Bullet cams have come down in price a lot in the last two years, you can now buy digital zoom hi spec units for under $200. I expect capturing to hard drive will become more popular as the problems are ironed out, but right now using a MiniDV based system seems the easiest solution.

Will do. As soon as i have the NTSC master done i'll get things setup and be able to take some orders. I havnt wanted to do that so far because i havnt been in control of timescales, duplication is quite a quick process by comparison.

I won't be able to make it to any of the full weekends now. Bummer. Two weeks ago I got a chance to drive a Nissan 350Z (Touring) around the 'ring 4 times. It was my first time driving a RWD car fast. They were fun laps, and thank goodness for traction control! Now I prefer the performance of the 350Z over the stock Euro STi for the 'ring. But in my opinion for looks/snow/rain/gravel the '03 ('04) STi is better.
John, I hope the DVD process goes well for you. Best of luck.

Pretty sure the alignment specs are back in the thread somewhere Arnie. I use the same specs as on the road, nothing specific for the ring as such.
RWD on the 'ring is a lot of fun, epsecially when you know it well, there are some fantastic places to drift the car, my favourite is just at the foot of the climb to the Karousel, you can go sideways round cars on the inside line for ages. :D
When it rains its really hard work in a RWD car though, the tarmac used is very low grip and also very inconsistent, so you have to be more careful than with an AWD car because you have less oportunity to catch the car if you get into a bit of trouble. Taking the car well off the racing line makes a big diference there, in the wet my lines are very diferent, using a lot of the outside areas of the track and avoiding the normal turnin and apex points.
Thanks It-x, i'll let you know when i have an update.

Hi Guys, thanks Casey!
I am told the export of the NTSC files will be happening tomorrow night, so i should have that with me by weekend to do the work required to build the menu and get it off for reproduction.
I have just had the first batch of PAL copies made, they are being collected tomorrow so i should have those ready by weekend.
As long as things still go to plan, i should have the US DVD's with me in two weeks. Once i have the US DVD finished and burned the master for duplication i'll start to take some orders. I'll be gutted if this doesnt happen to the timescales required for you guys for Christmas, i expect it will be sorted with plenty of time for shipping etc.

I'll be placing the PAL version in the shop on scoobynet at the start of next week. If you want to get info in advance to make sure you get a first copy send me an email and i'll make sure i get one to you from the first batch.

Is SubieGal still the US Distributer ?
It would be GREAT to help support SubieGal's dirty habbit ... rather then some unanimous U.S. distributer ....

yes, i will be doing this in two ways. One will be with Jamie taking payments and aranging the shipping, the other will be with myself taking payments and shipping through a US distribution point. I'll give you more detail on this shortly so you can see which method would suit you best.

You better contact Nick about this before you start selling. This thread is very borderline (against the rules to me and most paying vendors on this site).
I'm not a mod of this forum though.

I didn't realize you were actually going to make it a sort of "instructional" video - that's AWESOME. It will help me practice.. for Gran Turismo 4 :)
:o  seriously? If there is going to be a demand like that maybe i need to get some idea of numbers together sooner rather than later so i get the first batch ordering right. :o
Price is going to be $29.50 plus $2 for postage and packing, for multiple orders to the same address shipping costs will be as low as posible, i need to get more info on that together in the next few days. I'll update the ordering details shortly. :)
Here is the finalised DVD Cover. Hope you like it. :)

Hi Hey1, the website will be down for 24hrs. should be OK tomorrow. :)
Is there going to be any 'mad tite d0rift0' johnfelstead 'this is how you drift 8mins of Nurburgring'? ;)
Seriously, I can just see in the middle of the video:
Pop Quiz: "In order to attain the higest exit speed of this off camber corner in the wet, did I:
a) Late apex abrupt throttle lift and then trail brake
b) Change the CD bias to full rear and power over through the exit
c) 100 mph hand brake
d) became a hooligan
"
:)
I can't wait for the video. Whenever you get your 'vendor johnfelstead' status finalised, let us know! :)

Glad to see you went through with it!! Put me down for 1 if NTSC is available.
| Fijimunkii | 11-03-2004 10:08 PM |
How long is the dvd going to be? I'll most likely be up for a copy. Does anyone know if the video is going back up (online)?
| johnfelstead | 11-04-2004 07:44 AM |
I should have the NTSC master files with me tomorrow, they are being burned to send up to me right now. It will only take a day or two to get the menu's sorted then that will go down for duplication. I hope to be able to update you after the weekend with more concrete info on ordering.
