I already have a fresh set of Azenis from the Porsche, and another set of Hankooks that we won earlier in the year....why not?:D I wouldn't warn anyone just yet....car will need some work before it gets to play.
Anyone know of a decent Subie shop in SD/OC that can replace the timing belt and stock/OEM-type clutch and not break the bank? T-belt definitely has to be replaced, but I am not sure on the clutch....first time driving AWD, definitely different hehe, feels a touch of slip in the 1-2 shift, but that could just be the way it is.
Back on-topic, the Finale is coming up quickly, I will be driving up from San Diego on the 19th in the afternoon, stay in St. George for the night, then onward to Salt Lake City to pick up my co-driver's Miata. Then go from SLC to Boulder. Stay the night, drive fresh to Topeka. Matt Kogan and I did the drive straight on through in 2004, I will NEVER do that again unless we have 3 drivers!! I have a late flight home from KC on Saturday to SD, no more driving.

Hopefully Max will chime in ... he will probably recommend his sponsor, Timmons Subaru of Long Beach. THE place, although not convenient for you, is Suby Specialties in Monrovia ... on the OC side of Pasadena. :-)
Oh ... check with Naren ... he works with a garage that does a lot of Suby work, I believe that might be in OC: [emailprotected] or [emailprotected]

You can always pm me if this is going too OT, but some suggestions for FSB setups, struts, and stock wheels (15x6? Offset?) would be great. Not a lot of "what is Stock Class legal" information floating around here for the non-turbo chassis.
+1 for Vilven! They did an awesome job with our tires earlier this year. $10-15/tire for shaving, I think it was? I know it was $100 total, including the shipping to Ohio.
TireRack will shave tires that they sell. $25/tire (for street tires).
Another +1 for Vilven, for the great shave job on my set of 255 RA1's for local track use

The RE070's are great. Bridgestone certainly did their homework on the STI when building that tire. It would be awesome if they offered the exact tire in a 245/40/17 as a performance upgrade for WRX's, but alas you can only have the stock size.
We will be running the CSC 3's this year. Our first test on them was this weekend. Considering we were running them at full tread depth, I am pretty happy with the times we set. The tires have less void area than the CSC 2's did, they still transition amazingly and have excellent turn in feel. I'll be driving around on this set to get used to them. We will have another set for nationals, of course they will be shaved. :)
As far as the Advans, they had great grip, but the car felt numb on them. I'm not sure why, as they do look like a great street tire for autocross. They just did not have the transition and turn in feel that I like and the car felt weighted down coming out of the turns. It may be a feel that works for some, but I have never liked a car to feel like that.

I would be curious what you used for pressures for camber on the Yokos.
I followed the advice of many here on the boards, and started with low 30 range and -2.5 camber, far less than I was running with the 070 and 615. Simply put, i didn't like the Yokos at those settings. They felt very blah. By the end of the Atwater Pro I was 40-42 and -3.5 camber and it was a world of difference. I wasn't the only one running these higher pressures and camber settings either, as Alec and Garret have been running them all year.
So, lesson learned for me, do my own testing.
Chris H.

We started the tires at 42psi with ~3.5 camber. I took the tires all the way down to 34psi, as that's where I normally ran the RE070's. The felt numb everywhere.
The CSC 3's we seemed to get the most grip around 32psi! I was pretty surprised they went that low and still felt responsive.
Glad to hear some info about the RE01's as we considered those at one point.

both shaved and unshaven ... compared to the 615's and 070's. But as we know ... a car needs to be set up to a specific tire. So start working on a RE set-up. ;)

I have considered the possibility of an L in HS. Same basic setup as the GS car.
225 V710's. I'd give the hoosiers a shot as well now. KYB AGX's are a great improvment over stock. Though I think Super stiff Konis will really be the ticket.
A front bar makes a world of a difference. There is a 25mm bar made by addco and specifically for the older legacy. But it will fit directly on an RS with some minor bracket fab. Alginment is crucial, 1/4 toe out in the front, rear set to whatever you like, max camber front as close to 0 as you can in the rear.

Do the 225's fit? The V710's are stupid-wide, we ran them on a 9" wheel in PCA autocross and they squared right up. There are some inexpensive +50mm 15x6" wheels on TireRack that are fairly lightweight. The listings for Koni's start with the '99 RS, but I have noticed that the full-body replacement KYB's are the same part number for the L and '98, so I do not see why the Koni OTS inserts would not fit in the factory housings.
I know the big front bar is used to counteract the inherant camber gain up front with suspension articulation---do you really need to go that big? Any provisions for camber adjustment bolts from the factory?
I am trying to pick the car up tomorrow. My wife is not thrilled with selling the Porsche (E-Stock, 924S Le Mans) because she likes it so much, but I am willing to have a "boring L sedan" for a dual-purpose car that I wouldn't mind driving to all of the Western ProSolos next year :-)

The front uses a single camber bolt on each side. With my RS I was able to get just over -1 degree out of it.
225-15 shouldn't be an issue. RS boys were running 225-16 and even 245-16 with some minor rubbing in the rear. You'll want to take advantage of the offset allowance to get the tire off the rear strut body.
I ran a 22mm whiteline front bar on my car, and would prolly go bigger if i was doing it over again.
I would get a pair of front konis and revalve them. Call Lee at Koni and see if he still has the graphs Priebe ran. I can't find mine anymore. You could also revalve a pair of rear konis, or just run a pair of AGX on the rear. The final set of rear Konis Priebe revalve ended up nearly identical to the stock AGX.
Learn to adjust rear toe on the fly, it works wonders on these cars.
Depending on the Mini count, I think a 2.2L Imprezza could be in the trophies on the West Coast.

Eric Sung would adjust toe, front and rear, to set-up the car for different tracks ... he was very successful doing that after his course walks. Maybe he was also adjusting rear camber ...

We probably still have Priebe's shock dyno sheets around the garage somewhere.... Although they have long since been redone, revalved and work much better-er....:D I'm running the ECU from that car in my EJ22 Impreza right now for FSP.....what a major improvement over stock (EJ18 that is) Goin 'wabbit huntin' next season....
My wife is not thrilled with selling the Porsche (E-Stock, 924S Le Mans) because she likes it so much, but I am willing to have a "boring L sedan" for a dual-purpose car that I wouldn't mind driving to all of the Western ProSolos next year :-)
-JW
225's are the only way to go. I tried 215 hoosiers and its just not enough tire, not to mention the gearing hit was hell.
you want the biggest fsb you can fit. you just can't get enough roll resistance in Stock to make the front end work.
camber is only adjustable in the front, with max being generally ~1.3*. Lots of toe adjustment though, especially in the rear. Adjust to taste.
I always ran the KYB's. Never tried the konis as I didn't think they would survive the other activities my car is used for :) FYI, KYB makes the factory struts as well and they AGX's really seem to work well with the stock springs. Since this will be a DD for you, they last forever.

Thanks for the info! There are 15x6" +55mm stock steelies on the car, and some +50mm at 13.5lbs on TireRack, as well as some +45mm at 15.5lbs. Before I order, I just want to know what will "fit" without rubbing on the fender lip if I'm running 225 V710's. I guess I could run very small spacers if I get the lighter wheels. Recommendations? Do you suggest running 205's in the rear? Victoracers in the rear to aide rotation?
Trying to pick up the car this evening, just sold our "other"car (1995 Saturn SL2) this morning, the $$ sure helps.

+45 won't be stock legal, just FYI. The +50's would be OK. Spacers will not move these wheels closer to the +55 stock dimension, but farther away.
Whatever you do for tires, just pay attention to rolling radius. You can mix and match, but the rolling radius needs to be nearly equal.

pretty much what Andy said. The rolling diameter has to be close or you'll fry the center diff.
As for the tire, with the RS, some could fit the 225/50 16 with no rubbing or very little, and others had more, though never to the point you couldn't run them. I'm not sure how the fitment will be with 15's. I would imagine it would be less of an issue if an issue at all with 225/50 15's.

Forgive my noobishness...what type of differential(s) does the L have? I thought the RS '00-'01 was the only one to have a rear LSD, do all of the AWD cars have a viscous or mechanical center coupler? Front? Good call on the +45 offset, I always mix up the 1/4" allowance once we go to Metric. Just want to make sure I don't rub on the strut with a little negative camber. Any recommendations as to a reputable USA Whiteline dealer, or one that is NASIOC-approved? Benefits of either of the 3 types of front end links (wire metal + urethane, aluminum + urethane, rod-end) with use in the crazy-big bars?
Need to wake up my wife and make her take me down to pick up the Impreza from the previous owner!! Pregnant ladies sleep too much :-)

Endlinks: PM me if you're interested... I have a rod end design that works very well using rod ends. The GC chassis cars use a double shear bolt in the control arm and a single shear bolt in the bar and, of course, the bolts are different sizes. I solved this problem and have a believer or two in my design floating around out there. Total cost is under $40, if I recall.
Big front bars: I bought my latest 7/8" from IPD and the transaction went very smoothly.
Camber: You won't get enough to worry about rubbing the strut body. :) The biggest strut issue is rubbing the spring perch in the rear. Its a bugger, more offset and you rub the strut... less and you rub the fender.
Diffs: You should have open front and rear with a viscous coupler in the center. On my RS, I had the center bind up on a tight course with the same size tire all around. They do work and can be tight.

I'm a believer in Andy's endlink design and have been using them for years.
The diff damage that can be caused from different sized rolling diameter is at the center diff, which is a VCLSD in everything but the STi. Basically, its 'sees' the difference in wheel speed front and rear as slip, and is constantly trying to send the power to the larger (slower spinning) wheels, creating a constant load on the fluid, wearing it out prematurely.
I think you'll be ok with the rubbing with the shorter tires. Just go more towards the fender than the strut :)

Boy, I can't wait. It's going to be a blast this year in DSP. Jay and I have already been smack talking over on rs25.com.:D
We got 7 subie drivers. Jay and his co-driver Ed, Myself and my co-driver Mike Brown, Joshua Sandel and Noel and Gilbert De Los Reyes.
My co-driver and has been giving me a run for my money and has been close on times like last weekend. We were at a divisional in StL. I ended up winning by .1sec by he had me by that much on the first day. Looks like we will have our own mini battle in DSP. Hopefully the SEB comes threw for us and moves the BMW's in 07.

Well, whoever picked me on SCCAForums to win STX, you're sweet, but I had about a snowball's chance in h*ll. :) I figure it probably wasn't someone on here though, you guys know my driving too well for that. :) But anyway, to the 3 people who picked either Phil or I, you should change your votes.
That's the positive attitude! :)
:p  Actually, it's just realistic. I personally think I'm faster this year than I've ever been. For the most part this season, I've actually been able to pull my head out of my *** and DRIVE. I think any given event, I can probably beat one or more of the top drivers in STX. So do I think I had a good chance at trophying? Yes, actually I do. My times have been really close lately to Phil's, McCance's, etc. But win? Hmm, well let me put it this way, the Pick the Winners contest isn't like horse track betting - you don't get more points for picking the long shot. :) And IMO, I'm definitely the long shot. I'd pick a lot of people before I even THOUGHT about me - Billy, Josh, Fitzpatrick, Courtney, Phil, McCance. Jason beats me more often than not, especially recently. Even though my driving stepped up a huge notch this year, Jason has REALLY stepped it up IMO. I'd take Chang and Randy instead of me too. (Sorry West Coast folks, I haven't seen most of you drive, so I just have no comparison.) So, KC, can I stop yet? I'm starting to get an inferiority complex here. ;)
What? Why? B0rk3d car again?
Nope, car's fine. Car's running great, actually.
Finances just took a rather unexpected turn for the worst. Mortgage still has to be paid, and food still has to go on the table. So anything non-essential gets cut. And $350 in National entry fees (and waiver fees), $230 in ProFinale entry fees, and $400 in gas is tops on the list. As far as I could tell, that was basically the bare minimum. Even if we didn't eat out at all, just munched on the free dinners. Even if we skipped the hotel and camped. Still couldn't get around the entry fees and gas. We could save a little $ on gas by driving out there and not towing, but not enough of a difference, especially since the car ran like total crap on that stuff they pass off as gasoline in Missouri and Kansas (and that was with the stock ECU, BEFORE we were tuned for the Sunoco 94 that we always use in it). I even considered just doing the Finale and not Nationals (or vice versa) to save on entry fees, but decided at that point, it isn't worth the trip. So the tires that are already bought go into plastic bags and saved for next year. Phil and I will miss you all, but them's the breaks sometimes. :( But next year you boys better watch out, cuz I'm a comin' for ya! :D
Oh wait, I think Jason said he was going to tell you guys that the reason we weren't going to be there was that Phil broke his foot fighting a bear. So yeah, that's it, forget everything I just said. It was a bear! :D
Oh yeah, while I'm thinking about it, we had a non-smoking room reserved at the Super 8 for Thursday the 21st through Friday the 29th. I think it was a king room for $72/night. Anyone want it? If so, contact me via PM, and I'll coordinate with the Super 8. If I don't hear anything within the next day, I'm just going to cancel the reservation.
