I ordered mine in July and got it in August - they needed to effectively fill a cargo container so I waited an extra month.

I like it:

Wow, Subaru is almost like Ford back in the old days....any color you want as long as it is Aspen White or Obsidian Black.
Do you really think a small piece of stamped steel and a plastic interior bit would cost $450+ if it weren't rare?

I still really want one of these, but I can't justify the cost. I'd rather buy new struts or something..
just because it doesnt come stock on US models doesnt make it rare. seems to me all of you are having no trouble finding them....its a factory part............................................

there wouldnt be a crazy mark up if you jdm turds wouldnt want it. if no one cared, they'd be worthless..
WRX USA 09-21-2010 02:38 AM

^ Dude, did you not see my post that there are only 2 colors that Celtic Motorsports can source from Japan? The other five colors have NO ETA has to when they will be restocked by Subaru. They may not have been rare at one time....but they are now.

Not worthless, but I see what you are saying.

This is how service parts work: When an supplier makes a bid to an OEM to produce a part, part of the contract dictates the terms of "service" parts. Service parts are parts meant to be replacement parts supplied after the production of the vehicle has ended. As part of the initial contract, the terms of the service parts are dictated including how long the supplier must remain able to make these parts, how many they will be required to make, and at what cost they can sell them for. This is all determined on how many cars are sold with that part (IE: is this a 200 unit a year Lambo or a 600,000 unit a year Camary) and how critical that part is to the working of that car (pistons are more critical to keeping a car on the road than a optional roof rack).

In many cases, the part is common (a seat, a piston, an airbag) and the service life and quantity is great. At my company, we often must make service airbags for 10 years. The reward for this is that we get to charge a good amount more money for the service airbags than we originally got for the production units.

In the case of the Spec-C roof vent, I'm sure the supplier of the vents got very limited service quantities, considering the vent was only installed on a couple thousand vehicles ever. I'm certain the company did a build-out (built all the service vents they ever thought they'd need) and threw the tooling out (we often do the same). I'm sure Subaru never counted on people ordering these for vehicles not equipped with them from the factory. It will be interesting to see if the supplier ever makes more, or if they are done and we are scavenging the rest of the build-out quantities.

I'd be pissed if I had a Spec-C and needed a replacement vent for some reason and couldn't get one from Subaru any more!
REXMAN03 09-28-2010 06:25 PM

Thats awesome!
NewShockerGuy 10-12-2010 02:11 PM

Those that are worried about the install, seriously it's not bad... just take your time... No need to spend 200+ when there are how to's on here and so many of us have done it.

Save your money on the install and do it yourself. It's fun!
Subaru has now stopped making them. As supply goes down, the cost is going up. When I first got my car in 2006, they were running 210 for the kit. I got lucky and found one for 350 about 3 months ago. Most supplies have dried up at this point.
Where are you getting this information?

I've emailed a few places still listing them and they have all told me that this isn't the case.

This is what the parts guy at a dealership in Ca where I bought mine told me. I've been told since then by others that this isn't the case. It does seem as though Subaru is out of stock on some colors for the time being.

Sorry for the chicken little type post. :(
808-wrx 10-16-2010 04:40 PM

i just bought mine from edo performance. it was very spendy due to the us dollar being worth less then the yen. i paid about $500.00 for it shipped to my door and 3 month wait.
Road_Warrior 10-16-2010 05:14 PM

Got mine from Japanparts.com, taking advantage of their 10% off sale! It took about 2 weeks to get here including customs clearance

Was a bit scary cutting a hole in the roof...

If I may add something : as a body man, I would put some sealer on the metal edge of the roof skin where the cut was to prevent rusting. If let on bare metal, rust will form in no time. The best is panel bonding glue. You can also put some primer with a paint brush. then, seam sealer.
You don't want rust there.

I agree!

I applied two coats of primer, one coat of touch-up-paint, let each coat dry per the instructions for each, and once dry, then installed butyl-caulking on the edge and then installed the gasket.

just buy the ebay one. comes with everything.

no but if you look all the pics of the install its just a little peace of sheet metal with a bend in it, i was just going to build it and save my self 200 bucks for a $5 peace of metal. sins its only to hold the clip in place it dose not have to be as big as it would need to be if you were using the head liner plastic peace on the inside. like i said i got it for a car with a cage and no head liner. but if your installing it on a car with a head liner then if i were you i would buy the kit on ebay.

The metal frame is needed you can't make your own. It's not just some piece of metal it supports the flap when it's open.

If any one needs the metal frame/latch part, PM me. I have one I do not need.
Big-E 12-30-2010 01:19 PM

FWIW, if you have a sedan, you [more-than-likely] do not have to drill-out and remove the existing map-light bracket.

Why?

One is that I have done two such installations on two sedans and did not have to remove it. The other is that, and presumably, the Spec-C was a sedan-only model and thus this is the model of car for which it was designed.

I know for a fact that having worked on a wagon and having retrofitted certain wagon parts into my sedan (direct installation - no modification) that kpluiten is correct that the wagon's map-light bracket is forward enough whereby you cannot align the vent-kit holes to it. I installed the sun-visor and the wagon requires a bracket that locates this item forward versus the sedan.

Although the vent-kit frame is designed to utilize the existing map-light bracket, presumably on a sedan model only, you should dry-install the vent-kit frame in place before removing the map-light bracket and see if it fits. If it does, leave it in place and utilize it.

I am not back-pedaling on my original statement. After reading kpluiten's response and considering it, that it was necessary for me to make such changes so as not to mislead anyone regarding this particular installation.
kpluiten 12-31-2010 05:14 AM
FWIW, you do not have to drill-out and remove the existing map-light bracket. The vent-kit frame is designed to utilize the existing map-light bracket. By removing the map-light bracket you are a) doing extra unnecessary work and b) removing additional structural support for the vent-kit.

Think of it this way: when you open or close the lid vis-a-vis the lever, you are effectively flexing the roof at that point. This is where the existing map-light bracket, adds to the structural support for the vent-kit.

I've already done two installations and kept the map-light bracket in place and used it in conjunction with the vent-kit since again it is designed to do so. Put another way: simply look at every picture of the vent-kit interior bracket-frame and it has two holes in it to mount it to where the map-light bracket is (or should be).
Theres some debate on this. It did not appear to fit in my wagon. We worked with it extensively, and the map light bracket holes did not align with the holes on the frame. They were about 3/8" away. We messed with it a long time. I'm a mechanical engineer by trade and degree and the guy helping me has an ME degree from Stanford. If there was a way it was supposed to fit in my vehicle, we could not find it. Further more, the map light hole in the headliner did not fit under they vent trim profile. It was forward of the trim hole by 3/8" or so. I'm thinking some chassis or years had some change made to them for whatever the reason.

I agree, it was supposed to fit with that bracket, but that was not the case in my car. The vent still works fine with minimal to no deflection under operation of the latch. :)
Big-E 12-31-2010 06:01 PM

After reading this, a light went off in me. For other wagon versus sedan reasons I do agree with you and will edit my original post.
