Ok, so here is my dilemma. When i had the stock bulbs, the module in the engine bay removed the DRL. I converted to HID. The DRL's came back. So searching, i did the pin out method. IT caused the check engine light to turn on and the cruise control light was blinking. Either way, DRL still turned on when i put the ebrake down. So i placed the pin back and reset the ecu. Another search said to removed the black connector thats in the passenger kick panel. DRL are still on. So i just replaced everything. the lights do not flicker with the DRL but i want to lengthen the life of the bulbs. So i tried 3 different methods, no success. Anyone have a solution with pics if possible. I have an 07 wrx wagon. Stock headlights housing, but have HID conversion. Thanks anyone
| Eppster | 06-22-2008 03:26 PM |
I did this and it worked for about 2 months on my 07 WRX wagon...then, my DRLs started working again! I have no idea what happened. I had both ends sealed tightly with electrical tape. Gnomes in my engine bay I guess.
Now I just drive around with my HIDs on all the time since I've been too lazy to try the other options.
How do you get the black part out of the white piece to begin with?
The white piece actually locks into the black piece. iirc you can gently lift two points on opposite sides of the black connector (I've circled one of the points on one of the pics posted earlier in this thread), and then the white piece can be pulled free.

Yeah just push the pin with a tooth pic and comes out, yeah right . After trying for 30 minutes I gave up :unamused: and decide to cut the wire. For some reason my DRLs are still running, I'm pretty sure I cut the wire in the center. I am gonna take pics tomorrow, maybe my car is haunted.

Pull up one click on your parking brake. That will shut them off.

Remove the glovebox. If you've already installed HIDs re-install halogen bulbs, find a level parking area and turn the ignition almost all the way on(without starting the car). Pull the parking brake handle. The relay you need to disconnect will click making it easy to find.

That's the exact wire I removed on mine, only I actually removed it from the plug; I doubt it makes a difference how you do it..I highly doubt a TR would be that different from a stock, base 07 WRX, but seeing as yours are still working.. more creative thought is required

took me 10min to do:banana: very nice rightup, after hearing about all of the issues with taking out the pin i just cut the wire as close as i could to the stock electrical tape if anything comes up "Warranty work" i'll just tape it up and no one will know but me:devil:

That wire only affects DRLs so unless you would want your DRLs "fixed", I don't see how it makes any difference for the warranty.

I know this thread is old, and this is my first post so forgive me, but I recently installed a McCulloch 5000k HID kit in my 07 wrx ltd and did the drl disable method of cutting the yellow/red wire under the glove compartment. It worked for the first week, then I installed LED parking lights (city driving lights) and now my drl's come back on randomly... not when I release the parking break, but after I've started driving. I'm sure I cut the correct wire. Any ideas or help? I'm thinking of removing the LED's to see if that works, but I don't understand why they would cause the drl's to come on... Thanks in advance.
| Blowby | 02-20-2009 06:15 AM |
I just removed the little module thing in the engine bay and it solved all my problems. No wire cutting at all, I just unplugged it and removed it all together from the engine bay. It has been working for me for about a month now.

Thanks. I was going to try that tomorrow, but I've read that's not the correct way to do it so I'm a little hesitant.

Ok, so I figured out why mine were doing the same thing. Basically my ballast was arcing against something in the engine bay where I mounted it originally. Here's what it was touching (I'm not sure what it's called so I took a picture):

So when I would start the car, the DRL's would stay off, but when I started moving the motion/vibration would cause the ballast to touch this thing and they would arc, causing my DRL's to flicker on and off.
Solution- I just wrapped the ballast in electrical tape and remounted it here:

Sorry for the large pictures.
I hope this helps, and sorry I didn't post this a while ago when I figured it out. On a side note, I'm thinking this kind of thing is why people have had their HID kits catch on fire. It scared the **** out of me when I saw it arc when I was messing with wires trying to figure out if I had a bad connection. I'm amazed the wiring didn't catch on fire.
Anyways, if you've disconnected the DRL's under the glove box and they're still flickering on/off, check to see if your ballast is arcing where it's mounted. Again, hope this helps.

I'm running into the same issue. I've had that wire cut for the last couple years, and the DRL's are back on after installing HID's from DDMTuning.com. I tried disconnecting the connector as well with no luck. Anyone have a solution for this yet? Mine is an '07 WRX TR. The ballasts are mounted directly to metal surfaces, but I don't know if this would cause an issue.
Thanks!

As I originally said, that wire has been cut a long time.
Nobody has a fix for this? I'm thinking it might depend on the manufacture date for the '07s that these tricks aren't working for some of us.

Been talking with Big-E, and he had suggested this fix (I'm sure it's been mentioned already): http://www.iwsti.com/forums/how-install/73434-2007-drl-disable-different-than-2006-a-6.html
Unfortunately, that must only be for STi's, since we do not have a green/yellow wire going into that harness under the steering column (excuse the pics, taken with the phone, upside down, and too close):

The green wire is solid, not green with yellow stripe.
I'm out of ideas on how to disable these things, except to mess around with the e-brake's signal to the system. The only time they shut-off is when it's engaged.

Removing the wire from the center of the black relay plug worked perfectly. If removing the pin remember to remove the plug backing plate otherwise you will never get the pin out without ruining it. Its a small white plastic piece on the back of the plug.
