03twrx 05-01-2006 05:03 PM

3,000mi worth of blue painters tape?
I'm going to be leaving for a 3,000mi trip tomorrow nite and was wondering what kind of tape I should ust for the front of my STi. Painters tape? The front end is flawless right now and I perfer to keep it that way no matter how retarded it looks.
el_bobbo 05-01-2006 05:03 PM

just don't tailgate people and you'll be fine....
sizzflair 05-01-2006 05:06 PM

You must of never gotten caught 500 feet behind a dump truck befor. And this trip is a little short notice for me so I have no time to find a bra.
silver-RS 05-01-2006 05:11 PM

SinisterSkube 05-01-2006 05:21 PM

whats the difference between a long trip or a short trip to work........ if chips are going to happen they are going to happen anytime not just on long trips.....
SinisterSkube 05-01-2006 05:21 PM

sorry it posted twice
03twrx 05-01-2006 06:18 PM

I never drive on the interstate. ever. No reason to, as of now. I'll put it this way. I have 8,500mi on my 04 and it's my only driver.
aren040 05-01-2006 06:53 PM

wow that's some low mileage... but yet some painters tape will due.
invadersevlow 05-01-2006 08:32 PM

What about inquiring at a dealership for some of the protective plastic the cars usually ship with? Dont the dealships usually just throw the stuff away?
AlbanianImpreza 05-01-2006 10:02 PM

bra is good, but it discolors. tape is good for a quick trip like ur running, painters tapes dandy like candy
e11ys 05-01-2006 10:07 PM

You have good reason to be worried. I drove my friends blue Jetta GLI from SC to Vegas when he was moving out there, and the paint on the front was trashed by the time we got there. The entire front was speckled. He's like, meh, it's time for a paint job anyways. I know I'd be pissed if it was mine....

No... but you can try.

If he wants to do it, let him do it. Don't push your thoughts on him. Hell I'd be doing the same thing.

ever see those commericals where the two people run in slow motion towards each ohter and then embrace? Thats subaru and clear bras
Nitro Don 05-02-2006 08:36 AM

I would recomend the blue 3M automotive paint tape. Regular blue painters tape is going to turn into glue when it gets wet then dried and will be a real bitch to remove.
russd32 05-02-2006 09:21 AM

It's a car, mmmkay......You can take the plastic off of your furniture too.
johnnywu 05-02-2006 10:26 AM

are there other colors to this 3M painters tape or is just blue... inquiring minds would like to prepare for a xcountry trip

I dont want to take this thread off-topic here...or hijack it. But! i am going to subway here in a few moments on my lunch break. We're taking my friends ford escape. Should we tape it? its only but a few miles down the road.
DUC748 05-02-2006 01:08 PM

Why not try something like Griot's Spray-On Bra? Sounds like it's just what you're after.

Love it! :p

way to go on not even knowing what a spray on bra is. the have that stuff at walmart or any automotive place. Comes in black and clear and is made by 3M.

Congrats Moss for contributing useful information to this thread

wht93gted 05-02-2006 01:35 PM

ok, so back to reality...this spray on stuff really works?

I have an entire Lamin-X kit sitting in my basement, but maybe I'll just spray it on!

okay, okay. Before this gets carried away.

I have a Clear bra on my car. Its a year old, has 33,000 miles on it...and the front end is perfect. They work. the only reason why people hate them is because they "cost to much"

the spray on stuff is just that. Spray on.....its TEMPORARY. its for a road trip...for a 3 day escapade. crap like that. It comes off with soap, water and a powerwasher.

that one little thing in the front is a bug i hit on the way to the shoot. i didnt catch it right away. :(
WashmyScooby 05-02-2006 01:53 PM

Why not just rent a car and save the miles on yours? Prolly get a Nice Kia or something for like 20 bucks a day.

.... Mkay.... I'm not braging. I got lucky enough to get a job a mile and a half away from my house. Anyways, in case anyone is wondering. I drive this car. As I said befor it's my only ride.
antny 05-03-2006 03:31 AM

I blue taped my car coming back from Tucson back to OKlahoma and it worked great. I didnt want my car to get beat to hell through the desert. I am about to make another trip to florida here in a couple days and there is a roll of blue tape waiting to be applied to the car. works for me. Also I did see some purple painters tape at wal-mart if you wanted ur car to look like Barney.
AlbanianImpreza 05-03-2006 10:06 AM

dont they make painters tape in diff colors? like red white blue black? find ur assoc color. lol

yeesh... 3000 miles? yeesh, that's a friggin haul.

Forget the painters tape, what you need is an oil refinery. Can't imagine what the gas alone is going to cost you.

Good luck on your exploration of the Lewis & Clark trail!
dont they make painters tape in diff colors? like red white blue black? find ur assoc color. lol
Purple (lavender) and blue. The purple stuff has even less stick than the blue and might have a tough time sticking.

This whole idea is pretty  either way.
03twrx 05-03-2006 05:24 PM

$250.00 each way....

FWD WRX 05-04-2006 10:39 PM

i have a 2-piece leather front bra for 04/05 WRX for sale if anyone is worried about this kinda stuff
Chas Metivier 05-10-2006 02:22 PM

A similar product to the Griot's spray is a urathane (think wet suit) spray called Diamondite Spray Gard specifically for chip protection. I have used it on underside edges and leading edges that are low, like end of the rocker panels with good results. It also peels off when you want to change or remove it. I got it from Autogeek.com.
Two tips for applying: It's a big can but doesn't seem to go vary far, buy more than you think you need and If you mask off edges, you need to pull the masking tape off right after spraying the stuff on or it will want to come off with the tape.
Good luck!

Too late now and perhaps I'm missing something obvious, but did the OP ever hear of Southwest or JetBlue

I'm gonna check into a clear bra, this subie's front end looks immaculate!

AlbanianImpreza 05-10-2006 07:34 PM

i kinda like that color, id do my whole car in that. lol
antny 05-10-2006 08:45 PM

Yup it saved about a thousand bugs from leaving tis mark on the front end of my car. I made it from Oklahoma to Florida without one bug mark on any leading edge of the car besides the windshield. Its an easy choice for me. 6 dollar roll of tape or 100+ for clear bra or reg bra when i only take road trips once in a blue moon
DUC748 05-10-2006 08:56 PM

LOL :D

The baby blue and silver actually look kinda good together. ;)
antny 05-10-2006 09:17 PM

LOL yeah
AlbanianImpreza 05-10-2006 09:30 PM

yeh i like it alot actually, you might have just started a fad. lol. now anybody going over like 100 miles is doing it. lol
jandree22 05-10-2006 10:04 PM

So what's the deal with the painter's tape. I assume it's sticky enough to adhere to a 80MPH moving car, while not leaving and adhesive residue behind? Is another coat of wax required after removing it?
AlbanianImpreza 05-10-2006 11:02 PM

yes its true its the fastest and best way to cover ur car without damaging, and no u dont, but hey why not add another coat?
antny 05-10-2006 11:04 PM
