RallyCross national championship... part 2

rupertberr 07-18-2005 08:31 PM

I talked to Sue a couple of weeks ago. The National Championship has been moved to Hastings, Nebraska on October 15-16. Of course Sue is now retiring, so...
MarkA 07-19-2005 02:04 AM

Thanks - I had heard the Hastings date/venue change as well so at least I know I'm not going crazy.

Now if only the SCCA could confirm and put out some info considering it's only 3 months away...

I wouldn't count any eggs. What I have heard from our RE's conversation with Howard Duncan that there will be no 'Rallycross National Championship' in 2005 at all. He too mentioned the need for a better divisional & national tour like program before there can truly be a 'National Championship'. I don't think we'll see a 'National Championship' until 2007 at the earliest.

I think everyone should take a deep breath and relax and not make any plans until it is offical.

Lets all just relax until we hear something direct from SCCA. Afterall if you go to SCCA.org there is nothing on the rallycross calendar stating what you are. So what was speculated in GRM & Sports Car obviously isn't true or it would be on the SCCA site & Calendar.

Take care guys.

I guess I agree. Even if we had no other evidence, I would say that the lack of organization and preparation is one strong indicator that it won't happen this year.

But, you've got to admit that Sportscar is a pretty official source, so you can't blame us for believing it ;) It just makes you wonder what's happening up there at national...

RallyCross National Challenge
Finally - it's official! The first SCCA RallyCross National Challenge will be held October 15-16 in Hastings, Nebraska. More information can be found at the SCCA website or by going to the Nebraska Region's website. By tomorrow there will be a sign-up on the Nebraska Region site to get e-mail updates on the event as the details become available.

There will be two different courses (one for Saturday and one for Sunday), each about a mile in length. Planning is underway to make sure this will be the most fun you have ever had at a RallyCross, both on AND off the course. This won't be your usual SCCA Saturday night event party!!

NOTE: The forum software will not allow me to post a link to the Nebraska Region site because I am a new member! This should let you figure out what it is: The usual three letters. nrscca. The usual three letter ending.

I'd fly out for this (maybe) if I could find a co-driver... otherwise it's a LOOONG drive from New England. (ok... it's 150 miles further than Topeka that I drive out to every year... but don't want to do it 2x in one year) :)

I think he typo'd that - the SCCA site says 14th-16th.
Jerry Doctor 07-22-2005 04:03 PM

Sorry guys - my typo. The event will be Saturday and Sunday, October 15-16. I have corrected the original post.

There are plans for early registration check-in, tech and practice on a shortened version of the Sunday course on Friday, Oct 14. There will also (DEFINITELY!) be a "social activity" Friday night.

If you are thinking you want to attend, you'll want to register for the e-mail updates on the Nebraska Region website. That should be working by tomorrow (if not tonight). Since I am still too new to be allowed to post a URL link, let me just say again: The usual three letters. nrscca. The usual three letters.

From the SCCA page today

Continuing its pioneering evolution of the sport, Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), Inc. officials have announced that Motorsports Park Hastings (MPH), in Hastings, Neb., has been selected as the site for the SCCA RallyCross National Challenge, the first National level RallyCross in SCCA history.

Set for October 14-16, SCCA Nebraska Region will host the event, which is open to all SCCA members and will serve as a prototype for both a future national RallyCross series and a national championship.

We are excited for the opportunity to add another chapter into SCCAs long history, SCCA Vice President of Competition Programs and Region Development Howard Duncan said. We wanted to elevate our RallyCross program to the next level, and we feel Hastings and SCCA Nebraska Region provide what our National RallyCross program needs for a successful launch, thanks to the amazing community support of other SCCA events.

MPH Managing Partner George Anderson said many communities in the area are already prepared for the event.

I can't go anywhere these days without someone asking when the next event is, Anderson said. Having a RallyCross National Challenge will draw people from all over. The recent RallyCross made the front page of the Hastings paper, and even last Sunday, the track project made the Grand Island Independent's front page.

Hastings' population is 24,000, Grand Island is 40,000 and Kearney is 20,000. This population base is waiting in anxious anticipation to be involved in SCCAs world.

SCCA Nebraska Region Regional Executive Jerry Doctor said his group would be up to the task of hosting an event that will feature 10 classes spread over four preparatory levels.

The Nebraska Region is proud to host the first Rallycross National Challenge, Doctor said. Our region has a reputation for fun events, and we are planning an entertaining weekend both on and off the course that neither fans nor entrants will soon forget.

Fans will see a wide range of vehicles, which are required to meet minimal, yet strict safety standards. The cars will fall into one of the four categories - Street Stock, Rally Street, Rally Prepared or Rally Mod. Complete rules and a further breakdown of categories and classes can be found at www.scca.com.

Since its start in 1997, SCCA RallyCross has evolved from five events in its first year to more than 150 Regional events, four Divisional events and now National-level competition annually.

RallyCross is an automotive competition held on an unpaved, mostly flat surface where turns and maneuvers are connected by short straights that emphasize the drivers car control skill, as well as car handling and agility rather than speed or power. Competition is based on comparing drivers times needed to complete the course, and is similar to an off-road autocross.

For more information about RallyCross or other SCCA competition programs including Club Racing and Solo, visit www.scca.com.

I wonder how many actual rally teams will show up considering LSPR is the next weekend and Nebraska is rally-dead man's land.

I wish I didn't have a wedding that weekend or I'd consider it.

After making plans for a rallycross championship in Topeka & now cancelling them, I'm going to sit this one out & hope it goes well so there's another one next year.
KC 07-25-2005 01:04 PM

Ahh I thought this was a championship. Count me out then.
omahasubaru 07-25-2005 02:11 PM

Why not make the trip? Many have already planned on some kind of event, why does the location make you less interested. The site this is one is likely better than anything found in Topeka as it will be fully prepped and is HUGE!

It is the First National level event and the winner will be a National Level winner, just because they don't call it a championship doesn't make it any less of an event.

If you don't go, you will regret it I'm sure.

wife said ok and work said ok, i am planning to attend, course sounds great, 1mile in length and supposedly well prepared surface, friday and saturday evening parties...!!!
omahasubaru 08-19-2005 09:34 AM

Glad you can make it.

Make sure you sign up for updates at http://www.nrscca.com so that you get the info as soon as it's available. There is going to be some pretty sweet offerings for early entrants...

I'll come back here and post a new thread once the details for registration cost, timeline etc. are more finalized.

You don't want to miss this event. By my estimation both the East & West courses will be close to 3/4 mile long.

It's not the location - it's something along the lines of "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me." Don't want to make plans again, just to have them change the date & location again. :)
10th Warrior 08-19-2005 12:07 PM
Don't want to make plans again, just to have them change the date & location again.
from the sounds of things, you can take this event away from Hastings when you pry it from their cold, dead hand ;) i wouldn't be worried about it changing again at this point.
MarkA 08-19-2005 02:20 PM

I seriously doubt it will change again it better not Ive already taken the time off and made travel plans and hotel reservations all the way from SoCal.

If youre on their mailing list, theyve even put out a preliminary weekend schedule already.
randy zimmer 08-19-2005 04:38 PM

From the video, the ruts look to be monumental.
For a large field of cars, dirt alone doesn't hold up well.
Good luck.

jr4jc 08-19-2005 05:09 PM

sue at scca said they were going to get large equipment to wet and pack the surface so it would be a good surface for the weekend.
Fred 08-19-2005 11:47 PM

Hmmm... I wonder if I can talk Sue/SCCA into doing that to our field...
jr4jc 08-31-2005 09:19 AM

they got discount motel rooms for the 1st 40 rooms $25 fri and $25 sat nites, got mine reserved.
i do want to see what they do to the field and how it holds up!?!?!?
