The WRX is on the same line as the STI, technically you could swap the STI engine into a WRX.
The weak link in the STI drivetrain is the rear axles. Don't launch the car with the bias all the way to the rear. :)
Tom have you looked at putting the front LSD from the 05 STI into the 04? I think it works much much better than the 04 one. I'm going to be running a Cusco 1-way LSD next year.
I'll give chase to the M3s next year but if I'm unsuccessful maybe I'll look into building one of those "class-killing" old RWD cars like people talk about that hasn't been built yet. For instance, it's relatively easy to build an old RWD Chevette with a Buick Aluminum 3.8L V6 engine. It only adds like 25lbs of weight to the car... 300whp, run 285 tires on it, and you'd have to ballast the thing to 2200 lbs.

It was also a JOKE people. I welcome the competition. ESP will be fun because all the events will be like a national, kind of like it was this year with me and mikey in STX. I learned a lot about "just friggin drive" this year, but I also learned a lot about car setup and the fact that its very important. Most of my car setup is of the "mark daddio" theory, so I respect the guy a lot and it will be a lot of fun if he decides to run the Evo instead of the Viper....
Good luck in GS. Any car thats not an 05 Cooper S = backmarker.

Ahh, we are learning NOT to underestimate other drivers now - that is good. Karl sure surprised you, didn't he??? Though I am an STi owner (and hoping to go STU for 05), I have to say count your blessings that Karl's normal AutoX car is an EVO VII he imported and is not legal for ESP. You seen what he could do in an unfamiliar RWD BMW - and in the WET!!! Imagine if he had an ESP legal EVO VIII??? :disco:

Yeah my car is in pieces right now. I just swapped in a stock front suspension and steering rack tonight along with my STI RA takeoff struts. Did the rears the other day, still need to put a stock WRX rear diff back in. I haven't really daily driven the WRX in about 8 months, but by the end of this month it will be the daily driver again.
The new car probably won't even be registered.

Oh ooooooh! The local Mitsu dealer just left me a VM. I was almost thinking of an EVO VIII for a change, but as the MR was supposed to be out soon (and thus making the 5spd obsolete maybe?), I decided it was not worth it (along with the poor quality control as evidenced by even something as little as the heater control nobs). And then hearing the MR would not be out till mid next year, I decided to stay Sube and get the 05 STi with all its improvements. Well, the VM he left me said he has an MR in NOW!!!!!!!! Could this be TRUE? Will have to see tomorrow. But if so . . . . . . could that hurt the 05 STi's chances in STU????? Will the MR be that much better? Or will it even be allowed in STU???
| ColinL | 10-14-2004 02:09 AM |
MR will have the same problem as the STi for autocross: damn short 2nd gear.
the '05 Evo RS is the ticket assuming you can drive without ABS. all '05s have the helical front LSD and all have the old TME turbo-- all the info is on mitsubishi's site.
btw, buying a new $35k car based on autocross performance alone is
But not as bad as paying $40k (if lucky, more like $50K) for a Lotus Elise! Talk about a spartan interior? My old Europa at least had carpeting all over, a wooden dash, and a passenger seat that adjusted too hehehe. At least the MR is more practical for every day than one of those. But I have my doubts about that aluminum roof though. In one of the imported DVD's, they show that roof being made, and how they had to come up with a way to mate it to the rest of the steel body. Its basically pop-rivets! But, in the same video (Best Motoring, Factory Fighters), they did a slalom test with the STi (not sure which MY tho), EVO VIII, MR, and the Skyline. The driver said you could really feel the difference with the roof being lighter (and the center of gravity now lower), and turned the fastest laps with the MR. On the test track with a huge banked turns and a high speed slalom after, again he said the MR felt the most stable, and was too easy through the slaloms, where the STi had problems.
But, when they did a 5 lap track race, the STi Spec C came in 1st, but the MR (6spd, there was also a 5spd MR too) was right behind it at the end. There was also a Limited V STi driven by the rally driver Arai (who they said help test drive and develop the C or V), but he was darn near last.
So, now the smack talking will begin on the 2 forums . . . . . . again.
By the way, it IS true. South Coast Mitsu has 2 white MR's in their showroom. I just stopped by there to take a peek while they were closed.

is the MR going to be THAT much better than your current STi? if you were looking to buy a car before you got the STi then it would be different. are you really that good of a driver that you can tell the shortcomings of a modded EVO vs STi before you've completely modded them?
i diagnose this as a case of "must get whatever's best on the market(according to magazines) no matter what, and how much money i lose" instead of being happy with what you've got.

The MR in the states isn't going to be as lightweight as the JDM one, in fact it'll be the same weight as the EVO VIII.
Unless you are some super driver that can eek out the best performance of any car you drive, it's not going to make any difference. The cars are just about identical in performance. You seem very excitable about swapping to the "best possible car." Probably won't make you any faster.
From 30-60mph in 2nd gear the USDM STI is still going to be faster than the 2L EVO and the JDM STI. One EVO guy said the larger exhaust housing on the 05 EVOs will probably hurt autocrossing due to more lag, I'm not sure it will make that much difference. Oddly enough C&D? or R&T? did a test between the MR and the 05 STI and found the STI easier to drive.
Like Colin said the model to autocross is the 2004 EVO RS. The 5 speed in the EVO has good ratios for autocross.

right-- but if you really WANT an Evo MR for non-autocross reasons, whatever those might be... then it's your money, do it.
but again the performance difference is meaningless... the better driver will still win, imagine that.
