4EAT short shifter mod

Im not sure if this mod has been done before or not, so...
I never really liked the stock shift knob, and the Momo knob was a bit too bulky for my taste. So, I decided to seek out something different (not knowing if anything would fit properly). Along the way, I noticed that the shaft of the shifter was just too long. So, in order to give it a new look and better feel, I locked myself in my laboratory.
The end result is a retrofitted Razo knob (which feels so much more comfortable on shift), and a shortened shifter shaft. In my eyes, it looks a lot cleaner and gives different vibe to the interior. Plus, my long arms enjoy the shorter length.

Any feedback (good or bad)?

looks much better. i was going to do this with mine (GC) but there is a shift lock button that has a separate shaft running through the shifter.
| hqp921 | 11-04-2005 11:21 AM |
I think that's pretty cool. :)
But if you like it, that's all that really matters, not what other people here think.

wow, interesting! i know razo is actually a very respectable company but i would have gone with a different shifter- they always remind me of cheaper brands and honda civics...
| Mr. Sadface | 11-04-2005 11:34 AM |
Yeah, Razo gets a bad rap from the ricer sorts. However, they do make some nice products. Plus, they were one of the only knobs that came with a number of inserts for different shaft sizes. I may end up going with something else down the road.
| Handsdown | 11-04-2005 11:41 AM |
check out my thread, i custom fit a eurostar cf knob to my shifter and i'm very happy with it.
| occytron wrc | 11-04-2005 11:52 AM |
How did you go about shortening the shaft? Did you cut it? I think it looks great, I hate the height of mine too, as well as the stock knob. Good Job, I thought a lot about trying somthing like that.
| Mr. Sadface | 11-04-2005 12:07 PM |
Yep, just hacked it right off. I put a hole through the bottom of a shoe box top, and slipped it down over the exposed shaft. This caught all of the metal shavings, and kept my interior clean during the cutting. After measuring the height, I ended up cutting at the bottom of the threads. I took off about an inch. You have to be careful when cutting. I had to keep a firm grip on the shaft (yeah, I know it sounds ghey) when cutting, so it didnt move around.

Lexus IS style~ nice...i did this when i had my 4eat with the chrome RAZO knob just like urs

I like it. I may do this too, looks much better than the stock setup.

Heck yeah! It should shave at least a second off of my quarter...
| t3hWIT | 11-04-2005 02:58 PM |
I often wondered if that could be done myself, my 97 has a 4eat, and the shift knob I stuck on there was just too big. Looks good, now if only Scoobyroo would make it OEM

yo man do a DIY and tell us how to do !! is so interesting!!! where did u get the shift knob?
| Mr. Sadface | 11-04-2005 05:15 PM |
Well, theres really not much to it...
First off, Im not sure if the shift shafts are similar on other years. So, dont go cutting away at your car unless you know what youre doing.
1. I removed the factory shifter by turning it counter clockwise.
2. I calculated the height that I wanted the new shift knob to sit. In my case, I needed to trim 1 off of the shaft.
3. I took a box top from a shoe box, and punched a hole in it. This was then slid down over the shaft to act as a reservoir, catching the metal shavings from cutting.
4. I hacked 1 off of the shaft, while keeping a firm grip on the bottom of the shift shaft with some rubber and vice grips, to keep it from moving around. Be CAREFUL when cutting, as a slip will leave a nice scar on your dash trim.
5. I then chose the appropriate size adapter to fit the shaft diameter (the Razo knob came with 3 sizes), placed it into the shift knob, and placed the shift knob on the shaft. Cutting only an inch off of the shaft, left a few threads behind. So, I was able to simply screw the knob on, and it self-threaded itself on to the adapter.
Thats about as complex as my DIY gets. It took me all of 20 minutes.
I picked up the Razo knob on Ebay, for $20! Im sure that any shift know could be made to fit with patience.

The 2005+ Legacy uses a pretty nice auto shifter. Installed, it sits much shorter than the original Impreza/Forester shifter. In the 2003 interior, its low enough so i can reach the climate controls without a problem. Originally, I wanted the leather version of the OEM but was sent the legacy version. Plus its pretty comfortable to hold, and it matches the interior well (although 2005+ have a slightly darker shade, and the leather portion is perforated like the steering wheel). I'll try to get pictures of it soon.

I love the way it looks. I spent two hours driving to different speed shops looking for an acceptable knob to replace my Momo microphone.. looks like I'll have to get one on the web.
Is it necessary to have ANY threads on the stick for that brand knob?

| Mr. Sadface | 11-06-2005 01:27 PM |
No, it's not. It just worked out that way for me (luck). Initially, I was going to drill the adapter out a bit, to match the diameter of the shaft. The, use a little super glue or something to keep it from coming off. I'm sure there are many ways to keep it on there.
| white-shadow | 11-06-2005 04:07 PM |
i was thinking about the same thing about the threads...is super glue really a good idea?
| PeteDucati | 11-06-2005 04:50 PM |
PrimeraRob3, thanks for starting this thread..
Here's what I was able to come up with. The knob is off of a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I bored it out a bit with the drill and was able to screw it down the rest of the way. I may use some silicone or superglue if the knob is too easy to twist. I didn't have to cut the stick at all.. and I'm still gonna keep looking for a knob that I really like, the Cherokee knob was free.

when you pull that down into gear, though; does it knock against the plastic housing?

No.. that's the closest it gets.. once you start pulling through the gears the clearence gets bigger. One more twist tighter and it would touch. I'll take another picture when I get the car back from the tuner.

I remember how dumb it was trying to excecute donuts with the selector in D. Still a little technique involved even here.

The factory knob is really tall and it's more comfortable having the shifter closer to the console.. why have something so large and intrusive if you never use it? I generally shift out of park - put it in D and do the reverse when I get to where I'm going.. of course I get there faster than your car will.
Here's the microphone shifter - different angle but you can tell how tall it is.

Well gang, I took my 4EAT short shifter mod to the next level. Some of you might like it, and some might not. I have some custom work to do on the boot, in order to lose some of the extra leather. But, you get the idea. I'm not trying to pass my auto off as a manual, I just like the look. It's cleaner to me.
I simply swapped my 4EAT shifter console w/one I bought on Ebay for $35. As soon as Japanparts has new stock, I have the S204 dash kit coming! It will look really nice with the all-black dash.
Let me know what you think...

I dont really have any step by step pictures of the mod. You can see my write-up for the shortened shifter on the first page of this thread. Its pretty self explanatory. As for the boot, I simply swapped my 05 auto shift surround with an 05 manual shift surround. The fit is the sameplug-n-play!
Im not quite sure what you mean by the conversion of the auto temp. When I receive the S204 interior from Japanparts, it will come with the blacked out JDM temp dials.
