Rally Car Part of X Games 12 in Los Angeles August 3-6, 2006
ESPN X Games, the premier action sports event in the world, will add the sport of Rally Car racing to its sports lineup, starting with X Games 12 to be held August 3-6, 2006, it was announced today by Ron Semiao, senior vice president, ESPN Original Entertainment. X Games 12 will air live on ESPN and ABC Sports from its home in Los Angeles, Calif.
Rally Car Racing features a driver and co-driver racing street legal cars on closed sections of roads called stages. The goal in rally is to accumulate the lowest elapsed driving time on a prescribed course. The co-driver navigates the course and communicates upcoming road conditions to the driver, so that a high rate of speed can be maintained around and over natural obstacles such as blind crests, jumps, hairpin turns, dips, etc.
Rally Car Racing is a sport we have been watching for some time now, explained Semiao. We feel it matches our existing X Games audience while having the ability to attract new viewers, as well. Rally Car Racing is incredibly dynamic and exciting. ESPN is committed to motor sports as evidenced by our acquisition of NASCAR and its return to ESPN in 2007. Adding Rally Car Racing to the X Games furthers our goal of always looking to progress the event and the world of action sports.
The X Games rally will encompass two days of competition, featuring six scenic rally stages on Friday, Aug. 4 and a Super Special timed event in a stadium setting on Saturday, Aug. 5.
Bringing some of the worlds best rally competitors in front of the X Games viewing audience is a huge step for our sport, said J.B. Niday, Managing Director of Rally America, the sport organizer for the event. Were packaging a diverse and exciting rally into two days of action-packed entertainment, and were sure X Games fans will be able to see and feel the intensity of rally car racing.
Details on the complete format, teams, location, tickets, etc. are forthcoming later this spring.
ESPN, The Worldwide Leader in Action Sports, first developed its X Games franchise in 1995. Today the X Games and Winter X Games are the biggest action sports events in the world. As part of the ESPN Original Entertainment division, X Games, Winter X Games and All Access are just some of the original action sports programming currently shown on ESPN and ESPN2. The brand has also grown to include international X Games events, EXPN.com, EXPN Radio, the large format film ESPN's Ultimate X, and various X Games-branded retail products. X Games will remain in Los Angeles through 2009.

It's the X Games Rally. It's not part of the Rally America championship, it's a special event just for the X Games. (Note there's no dash in X Games, to keep the marketing guys happy :D) 6 stages, and a super special. So just like freestyle MX is part of the X Games, now rally is also. I'm trying to talk them into a Winter X version with full on ice tires and studs... Heh.

Wow this sounds like good news to me, even if this might not have happened without Pastrana.
Is this going to be Group N? That wouldn't count as "street legal" in CA, would it? Maybe they use the term loosely.

Participation is by invite only, and a selection committee is in the process of being formed. Nothing is final, but the talk is Open class cars, and we're pushing for a few (2-4) 2WD cars that can put on a good show to hopefully garner some manufacturer interest in the series. I'm not going anywhere near the definition of what's street legal in CA... :D

Sounds about right. But at this point, I'm glad to see some real interest in the sport at all. Hell, everybody knows Tony Hawk thanks to the X Games, so maybe, just maybe, this can generate more interest in the full-on rally events that are already being held here and across the world.

although - this could be both good and bad.. but ay, if it takes over nascar, is that such a bad thing?

I dunno... a lot of the X-game viewers have a 'r3sp3kT y0!' for the competitors.
Could be just what they needed to bring rally to the next level. Heck I bet 50% of them have played one of the rally games on consoles. And they... buy stuff.. based on what is used in the sport.
But is rally ready for this 'merican glitz and glamour mainstream of a sport that's been around much before cable? Before satellites? Before... TV itself? In other countries, Rally is big. Not here.
I remember the 1st X-Games in Providence. The crowd buys that **** that the pros use. Subaru? You listening????? Don't drop the ball on this one. You wanna be hip? Here's your platter.

I've been skateboarding and snowboarding for the past 14 years and I am a buyer for the best skate shops in the mitten, so I feel pretty qualified to give an opinion about the x games.
First of all, it is for the greater good. Rally will undoubtedly pick up some popularity because of this event. It has always been my opinion that athletes from these sports make damn fine drivers because they are used to high speed negotiation and precision. You gain an acute understanding of tolerances that your traditional sports just can't offer. So what I am saying is it will increase the competitiveness of the sport in the distant future as well as increase it financial support by making it mainstream
Now, for the die-hards this probably leaves a bitter taste in your palette; however, you will be happy to know if it really takes off, you will see a whole lot more track opening all over and possible government support. When I started skateboarding I had to drive to 3 hours to go to a skatepark and I live in the Detroit area. Now, I cant even count how many skateparks we have in our area. That is what making a sport mainstream will result in. Its love-hate, your sport will be bastardized, people looking to make money will infiltrate and take money for the deserving companies, but in the end, the sport will be better off despite all of the drawbacks.
I do believe, this is targeting the right market. Someone into top-fuel drag racing and nascar probably doesnt get rally; but downhill mountain bikers, snowboarders, skateboarders, etc. will. They are not all about the crashes or mines bigger than yours. The sports emphases individual participation and in many ways, exclude those who dont at least try. I think it will be important to show that you can get into rally on the cheap, it will catch on if people get the impression they can have a good time for little money. This in my opinion will be the tipping point. If they make it too exclusive it will just be a side show, but if they show the grass roots side rally will blow up.

This is a great news.
It's probably more likely to lead into a stadium rallyx type offshoot than directly to more stage rally...but anything that exposes rally cars is good.
Although it's also likely to make it even harder to find a good G2 car...I've been sniped on the last couple I've been looking at.

the best part is that someone at the x games realised that they had to include real rally stages and not just super specials like the ROC uses.

I'd say the odds of Travis and SOA not having some hand in this are slim and none.
It'll be interesting if the new interest will transfer to "real rally" rather than stadiumized super special stages.

it'll be interesting to see the after effect, as unlike all the other x games sports, a 13 yr old kid can't partake in rally. it'll grow intrest in rally, but it won't explode the particapation #'s like we need for rally to grow, the costs, dedication, skills to get a car prepped to run are probably outside the range of most x games followers. you may buy a board or bike 'cuz tony hawk/dave mirra ride it, but are you going to plunk down 25k$ to buy a car that looks like what Pat Richard races? although a PR edition WRX would be the ultimate in Pro models :)

VW is taking care of UNPIMP your ride right now. :)
If the younger "Rice" culture can grab on to the Rally as they have with all the other neckbreaking sports and move Rally into mainstream US culture like it is in Europe we may end up eventually with an International event coming our way before I die.

Wow... great news. More publicity for the sport is a good thing, and now I'll have another rally event to partake in, other than Rim.

What a bummer. After what they did (or didn't do!) for the MX and Pikes Peak coverage I can't wait to see how they delay or hack the rally coverage. Any bets on how late the timeslot is?

I can't remember the last time I got to watch a full event... Speed had the WRC coverage on so late that I'd fall asleep
If the teen market can grab hold of Rally it's just a matter of time before they become the competitors and the next generation watches from their living rooms. This is awsome... if they give it full support that is ;)

Its love-hate, your sport will be bastardized, people looking to make money will infiltrate and take money for the deserving companies, but in the end, the sport will be better off despite all of the drawbacks.
Kurt, is that you?

Well this is pure hearsay, but there was talk of airing a couple of events before the X Games to help promote it. X Games is ESPN's baby and they have a vested interest in making it as popular as they can. Of course we'll do all we can to get the best air time possible, and if there comes a time when some lobbying from all you folks might be of assistance I'll make sure to let you know where to be heard. We shall see...

Some of the X Games coverage makes it onto the main (ABC) network during weekend afternoons and prime time, yeah?
If the superspecial "finals" (or however they set it up) can make it on there, that is going to be a LOT of extra eyeballs.

that's my take on it as well. I used to rollerblade and remember when the first X Games and in many ways the popularity the sports gained changed them. With rally, that will be more difficult because it is so expensive. However, raising awareness will really help us all attract/retain sponsorship and get more people out in the woods to watch and encourage tv coverage. If nothing else, the fact that more people actually know what rally is will help organizers out tremendously, especially with getting new roads. And hey, if Subaru sells some more cars because of this, so much the better, their start money and parts truck really helped me out alot!

Again, this is not cast in stone, but talk was that there would be at least a one hour show on ABC prime time for X Games Rally (it's hinted at in the release, even). I guess that's about as much exposure as you can ask for, eh?

I hope not.....he sold out and doesn't even like rally! He just goes where the media attention is...that's not a true rally person! AND....the current crop of rally drivers (Pat etc.) would make him look like a clown in the dirt!

There are a lot more than just 13 year olds watching the x games and the 13 year olds have parents that watch and want to be involved in sports of shared interest. Furthermore, lots of young adults are no longer abandoning the sports once they get a car, it isn't being treated as a trend anymore, now that it has proven it can turn a serious profit. In many places, you will see more kids at the skatepark on a Saturday than in the fields playing traditional sports. The paradigm has shifted, get use to it.
Another thing, go to a public skate park around 7pm, about half of the cars in my area are imports being tuned/modded and not in the obnoxious way. The car culture is already deeply embedded in these kids; they just need some where to race that isn't on the streets. Rally is so much more of a rush than drag racing; most of them will quickly realize this. These young adults can more than afford a rally car. They afford dirt bikes, snowboards (you can easily drop $1500 on gear alone, not factoring in tickets, season passes, etc), why couldnt they afford a used entry level rally car? They have tons of disposable income. Sure, we'd all like to drive what the pros drive ($$$) but most of us have to settle, why would they be any different?
In summary, the kids not old enough will become followers until they can participate (other than in the video game format) and for the older ones. An entry level rally car is not much more than they are already are spending on their other sports. The grass roots side of rally is already all about doin' it on the cheap.

Rally has arrived.
It's about f'in time! A thousand thanks to Doug and everyone else involved (I can only assume SRT USA as well) for getting this deal done. I haven't watched the X-Games in a few years, but I'll definately be tuning in this year!
This is definately a shot in the right direction, targeting the best audience possible to get interest in the sport rolling here. Just keep in mind not to expand too fast, you'll need the infrastructure to control/accomodate all these new (potential) fans at events.

I think it would be cool to see rally-x on TV. I love watching rally racing, but it seems to me that rally-x is easier to watch and follow and could become more popular in the mainstream. We all know how Americans don't like to think when watching TV. :cough:NASCAR:cough:

One car at a time is not so exciting. Now you put a bunch of cars at once onto a car-sized motocross track...
... and you have SCCA CircuitRally (don't hold your breath...)
