About to start new bugeye headlight project part 4

turbo tecnica 06-24-2006 12:40 PM

They look nice!
natoli4 06-24-2006 01:14 PM

close up pics please...what fitment issues? looks pretty good to me!
brcewane 06-24-2006 01:25 PM

There is a large gap at the bottom of the light.. the right one fit in better.. but to get it to look right, the top bolt doesn't line up.

The left light sticks out too much at the fender, and I can't get it to suck in tight.

^agreed... they look great in the pics that you posted! Can we get a pic with the lights on as well?

great job!

kkam030 06-24-2006 02:57 PM

OneArmedScissor 06-24-2006 03:27 PM

holy moly! THAT LOOKS FABULOUS!
Suby.LOVE 06-27-2006 01:45 AM

holy crap those are nice.. when you get done take some pictures with your lights on. I want to see how they look.

great job man!
ScoobyFreak 06-27-2006 08:51 PM

WOW!!! Impressive. I'll bet that guy that was talking crap doesn't have the cojones to speak up now, eh?
brcewane 06-27-2006 09:54 PM

I'm trying to source some more clear bugeye lense covers to try a slightly different approach to see if I can get them to fit like stock.
Handsdown 06-27-2006 09:58 PM

hella optics would make these things SUPER sweet!
szeny 06-27-2006 10:16 PM

yeai gave you crap earlier about em, but they came out really nice..only thing is i think they would look 10x better if you painted the insides black not silver....they strong enough to be baked back apart again if you decide to do that?
Hank3 06-27-2006 11:24 PM

They look great on your ride.
STiShawn 06-28-2006 08:14 AM

wow, fitment issues asside those are great. Nice work.
InfamousDX 06-28-2006 10:59 AM

wow... great ****ing job.
disaster999 06-28-2006 11:11 AM

it looks great tho!
brcewane 06-28-2006 11:53 AM

I couldn't do the final fitting until I actually siliconed the lenses on there.. so I was hoping to get lucky :D
njskatchmo 06-28-2006 11:56 AM

azimiut 07-01-2006 04:43 PM

those look alot better than the ones i made originally. glad i could give you some inspiration. and you spent a little bit more time than i did too. that helps alot. they look awsome. good job.
Uncle Ben 07-02-2006 04:05 AM

Wow man... amazing. You should look into producing these for sale haha. Best DIY/dedication I've ever seen!

+1 for painting the inside black though :p
brcewane 07-02-2006 07:35 PM

I'm still trying to source some stock lenses.. hopefully I can get them soon.
TygerStile 07-03-2006 05:25 PM

good job man, they came out looking sweet.
o2sys 07-03-2006 05:32 PM

good job but with your skills you should of went totally custom instead of making it look like something. Now everyone is going to compare yours to the JDM ones and ofcourse as nice of a job you did isnt really goin to be as nice as the JDMs....

but props to you none the less
Handsdown 07-10-2006 11:30 PM

bump for pics of the cutoff? i know why the non-projector version of these lights have such terrible optics... they use the same damn unit for hi/lo beams:eek::mad:

i'd like to see what the hell kind of beam your projector is throwing.
brcewane 07-11-2006 08:29 AM

I'm in the middle of trying a different way to retrofit these into the stock lense/housing... I'm hoping to get beam pattern pictures this weekend of the projector
deejai35 07-11-2006 10:46 AM

Great job on the headlights! If you can find a way to produce these, I'll place an order. I'm really impressed!
Handsdown 07-11-2006 12:07 PM

awesome! great work so far.
brcewane 07-11-2006 01:22 PM

I got some stock lenses and was trying to cut the ebay housings to fit the lenses but with no real success... So now I'm attempting to cut the ebay housing to be the same shape as the chrome piece that people paint for the painted headlight mod.

Then I am gutting the OEM headlight unit and mounting my custom piece in there. So hopefully the end result will be an OEM headlight with the custom projector housing inside of it.

I'll take pics of the progress as I go along.

Stay tuned.... :D

And a Before & After shot:
Im sure this is going to be a dumb question, but why are the lights switched on the bottom (ie the before has the projector on the outside, on the finished its on the outside)? Will that mess with the light pattern?
Handsdown 07-11-2006 03:47 PM

no, as long as they're aimed properly it is the same exact beam and the same exact angle/attitude, only in a different location.

they're switched because the JDM lights he's emulating have the lowbeam on the inside.

Adam Corolla says hilarious stuff and then plays "the more you know" jingle during his radio show. F'ing hilarious.

Anywho. I was very skeptical these lights would look even half that good. Nice work man.

How many hours would you say you put into them?

God... way too many hours... just ask my wife.... defininately not a "save money" project if you add up your labor.. but more of a I'm going to see if I can do it since the $$$ cost is low and it is a fun hobby..

Who knows, maybe when I finish them, I'll manufacture them and put in Hella 90mm modules for a lower cost projector alternative for around $400.. we'll see

in on order. :)

******** UPDATE **********

Did some more work on the headlights today... basically I have cut the ebay headlight to a small shell of what it once was.. I cut it to be the same size as the chome surround piece of the OEM headlight so that it will fit in the same.

And I am fitting it into the stock OEM headlight housing as seen here:

As you can see it doesn't go back into the stock unit all the way, but I did have to cut some of it away to get it to go back in far enough and to get access to the bulbs. The stock lense actually covers all of the gaps you see around the projector housing.

I now just have to fiddle with fitting and the lense to get the projector housings in the right place. And then I will make sure they are pointing in the right direction by lining up the beam pattern.

My passenger housing should be here around thursday to try and do some more fitting. I still have some cleanup to do around the rough cut edges of the projector housing as well to make it look good in the stock lense.

************ UPDATE ************
Managed to get some time today to work on the headlight project. I was able to retrofit my projector housing into the OEM housing

So then I test fitted the OEM lense over the housing and glued the housing in place with hot glue. I then made sure I was able to get the lense back off. Then I put the polyester felt in around the housing to seal it all up. I managed to leave the OEM vent for moisture. Laid the resin to it... So now I should be able to pop it in and start aiming the projector beams.

so this is what you look like? :D cute pic of your daughter. so is she gonna get daddy's bugeye WRX with the custom projector fit lights? awesome work man! hope it all fits.
kiwee 09-05-2006 01:34 PM

very cute tim.
wrxzboost 09-05-2006 01:43 PM

you bugeye owners have it so much easier than us 04-05 wrx's. Even though there weren't any usdm subies with projector hid's, they're cheap to buy and retrofit while the 06's already come with everything.
imprezawrx1212 09-05-2006 01:48 PM

Nice job!
brcewane 09-16-2006 06:05 PM

*********** UPDATE ************

I managed to finish up the passenger side headlight this morning. The Mrs and the little one were off visiting for the morning, so I got to work. So here are the pics:

Finished the retrofit and bondo touchups and re-painted:

Here is my version of baking the paint :)

With a little coaxing, I was able to get the stock lense back on there and the projectors re-installed:

And here are the installed pics. I hopefully can go out and aim the headlight and see what the beam pattern is tonight.
