After two years, a carbon fiber 22b wide body kit emerges. part 2

Now how bout a widebody kit for the old skool legacies? I just bought a 91 turbo that was crunched and this might be a good opportunity.........
Haha, thanks! I think the older Legacies will have to wait in line... right behind the GC8 coupe, GC8 sedan, GDA, GGA, THEN, the 04 GDB, GGB's and so on. The demand isn't so high for a wide body on a 91 Legacy :p
Kostamojen 10-20-2003 03:17 AM

Only 245's up front! That sucks, I thought we were gunning for 275-295 all around :(

Not a high demand! There's like a whole three on the board here! I'm sure at least a third of them want it!

Ben,

That's a future possibility, but the focus is on the kit pieces, hood and wing right now. :)
kaneda3 10-21-2003 01:20 AM

ummm i think you may want to do some recalculating on those tire sizes

i was running 235 with only a fender roll on stock fenders

it really all depends on what offset you use

im pretty sure with a 38-42 offset you can still run 265-275 up front and alot more in the back

mike
Aerosim Research Ltd 10-21-2003 02:28 AM

Yeah, I figured that a 245 would definitely fit in the front and possibly a 255. I know that there are guys in the UK running 245's on 9" wheels on their 22B's and my fronts are a little bit wider. Until I can get a production set on my car and get it down to Kinesis to fit some wheels, I'm going a bit conservative. Also, I want to make sure it fits with DMS's since those are probably the worst coil-overs in terms of back spacing. the other thing is that unless I can stuff 275's in the front, I need a combination with the same diameter and that's 235/265 or 245/275. I'm not sure but there might be a 255/285 combo that works too ... have to check into it.

One other thing is that I can get Prodrive GC-07's and GC-010's in 18x9.5 with a 5x100PCD. So, that's going to limit things a little bit in width.

Anyway, we're still making molds but things are going well. The list of parts to make has grown and does include door panels and a dash as well as the inner panels for the rear and a panel to cover the big hole that's left when you remove the rear seats. And yes ... the 4 door. Kym's car just happens to be a 4 door L so there's no need to look very far for a donor car.

We'll have vendor status again on the 1st of the month and I've got the Aerosim Research username. We'll also have our new website up and running soon with all sorts of products as well - help support the wide body kit fund:D

ImprezedRS 10-21-2003 02:51 AM

how much are the Prodrive GC-07's and GC-010's in 18x9.5 with a 5x100PCD going to run?

I don't have any prices yet but I'd guess somewhere in the $600+ a piece range would be retail. We can't discount Prodrive parts, but we can discount the kit price for a package deal.

hey stevers,

really looking good, man. certainly was a pleasant suprise to see how much progress you've made so far on the widebody kit from the last time i talked to ya. though i haven't been on the forums in some time, i'm still very much interested in your kit (as soon as i can scrape the money, hehe). also, good to hear that you're health is improving; wasn't aware of your condition, but very glad to hear you're doing better.

cheers to you and kym! keep it up! :)
Aerosim Research Ltd 10-22-2003 01:06 AM

Oops .. missed the first post on this page. The 4 door won't fit on a wagon because of the D-pillar, but we'll make one, it's just 3rd on the list. :(

I think a wide body Legacy would be awesome. Something really subtle and classy ... not in your face, but enough to swallow 275's all around.

p1fan - thanks, things are coming along really well healthwise and kit-wise. It's good to have someone like Kym prodding me when I start to slack off.

If anyone's local (So Cal), check out the !El Halloween! party thread on SCIC and stop by next Wednesday. Food and free stuff (no free fenders, sorry).

Another definate on the GF8 would love to have it!

Question on the bumpers. You said the kit will have new bumpers but does this mean it will still fit on the stock bumper beams?

Thanks,

Chris
stever 10-23-2003 03:37 AM

The rear bumper defeinitely fits on the stock bumper beam but I think the front has to have some of the bottom part trimmed off of it. Similar to what's needed to fit aftermarket Japanese bumpers.

I've followed this thread for over 2 years now. I remember when it was 1 post long in the other thread. I never said much other than watched in awe. I got in a bad wreck with my RS, they told me I wouldn't walk again. They fixed the RS, I sold it, had more since. Here I am walking fine, no probs at all, and about to buy another RS. Full circle. Glad to hear your feeling better Stever, I know for a while I kept reading about how bad you felt and this and that, but it's in the past. Oh, and let me know on availability. This new RS will at some point in time sport this kit soon.

If you were a bit closer to Michigan I would let you guys go to work on the Legacy......

Wow, I'm sorry about your wreck but glad that you're back to normal. Thanks for the concerns, things are getting better every day for me. Some days still suck but overall I'm feeling way better. It kinda looks like everything is finally turning around, health and business.

I'm still way behind the schedule that I thought I could keep, but I'm working harder than ever. At least I now have Kym working for me on the retail end selling a bunch of aftermarket goodies. It certainly helps pay for the fender molds and everything.

I'll keep this thread up to date. As soon as Kym downloads the pics from her camera, I'll post the latest. Not much to see, but at least there's a left rear mold now. The first one's always the worst and it came out a lot better than expected.

Thanks again for the well wishes.

THANK YOU!!!

OMG i have been following this, like so many others, for the past years.

I am still very interested in this kit. You are right the first fendors looked like ass. What you have now looks much, much better.

I would be looking for a kit for my street car---turned rally car. How do you think it would hold up as far as the seams and the such on such a hostile environment?

Also how fast would this kit be able to be installed by you guys?
If it is able, i would be willing to drive the car out to you and spend sometime in the nice weather while the car gets done.

Let me know.
THanks
Congrats again.

Thanks for not giving up on me. There's no way I can sell anything I'm not happy with and those first fenders were total carp.

The fenders will hold up fine. A good quality epoxy will bond really well to bare metal and carbon/epoxy parts. It's like a good weld ... the fender or the metal on the car will break before the bond breaks.

I actually have an awesome guy in North Bergen who can install the kit for you and paint it. He's just bought out a Ford dealer or something and he's setting up shop. I think he said 7 lifts, paint booth that's big enough for 2 cars, showroom, etc. etc.

I'll hook you up with him when the time comes.

4wheelflyer - Thanks, it's coming along ... one day at a time. Can't quit my day job yet.

Wolfen42 - Tell me about it ... seems like everything I do ends up as a blessing in disguise. If it wasn't for an old lady crashing into my M3 in '99, I would never have bought the RS.

MGXsport - It's coming ... I'm not letting the wagon guys down.

Thanks again everybody.

Weight difference?
Steven:

Besides the great look and opportunity to run MUCH wider tires...how much would this whole set weigh compare to its steel OEM predecessor? Im guessing its tons lighter than stock but you know how much less?

Benjamin Tang 01-20-2004 04:12 PM

i tried reading all the posts but... has ne1 asked about the front fender liners? will the oem ones be to short? do u remove them completely?

also wondering about the rear... do u have to cut out the rear wheel arches for tire clearance?
MGXsport 01-20-2004 08:56 PM

Actually I haven't read anything about that.
Aerosim Research Ltd 01-20-2004 11:39 PM

Thing's have been hectic at the shop. Steve recently moved at the beginning of the year. Not too long after that, he got strep throat and was off work for a week. Aerosim also got our new lift in last week and so he's been putting in 12 hour+ days installing it, with the help of a few friends.

... but as of now, Steve's gotten over his strep and the lift is installed. We'll finally be able to start working on the fenders again. :)

Anyway, I'll try and have some new pictures up for you guys tomorrow night.

-Kym
[emailprotected]
Benjamin Tang 01-20-2004 11:45 PM

strep throat dosen't affect his ability to type does it?

jk... sorry but the suspense is killing me!
[emailprotected] 01-21-2004 03:35 PM

Sorry for the absence, things really got crazy and then I got sick. We just finally got an internet connection at home and since I haven't been to work since before the holidays I've got a lot of e-mails and pm's to catch up on.

Anyway, if you have any questions, e-mail me or PM me at this username ... it's my "corporate" one since we're vendors once again. I had to divert my efforts from the fenders to install and sell parts to pay for the shop and fenders, etc. It's a vicious cycle. And then it got so crazy that I had to get a lift ... which we finally installed this weekend.

And now back to the kit ...

Front fender liners ... none are included but the oem ones will work if you cut them lengthwise and then rivet a strip of aluminum or plastic between the halves to widen them. There's a possibility of some kevlar ones if there's enough interest.

The rear fenders do have to be cut out for increased rear wheel/tire clearance. Basically the inner and outer fenders need to be cut and re-welded to maintain the rigidity of the unibody. Doesn't have to be pretty though because it's all covered.

As far as weight goes ... it's probably a little heavier overall than the oem body because the rear fenders go on over the oem fenders. The front fenders are marginally lighter than stock but it's just because the stock ones are made from paper thin steel.

We're going to work out a deal with a local bodyshop in Southern Califonia if you're local. If you're anywhere near NY/NJ, I have an "authorized" installer there who will do the work. As for pricing, I'll see if I can get a ballpark estimate this week.

Kevlar is perfect for the wheel liners. It takes rock hits really well.

Sorry about the dusty pics ... we've been moving things around in the shop to install the lift.
