Anyone else excited about Dakar ?

Robby has his site up now at http://www.teamdakarusa.com/ . I hate Hummers and Nascar but, the idea of the beating the French always makes me happy. Take off that plastic shell and that is one high tech looking piece of kit. Some really nice shots there of the guts of the thing. How does Nascar factor into the Dakar and a US team running hummers? Robby was an off-road racer and indy car driver well before he ever ran stock cars. I am excited to see the Dakar again this year and I am glad to finally see more American involvement with each passing year.

I've always liked the dakar rally, as per the topic question:
Is there a Subaru in it this year? Oh.

Yes, I'm looking forward to it.

No, no Subaru in it.
Dakar is always fun. I just wish some channel besides OLN was covering it for US audiences.

I think that H3 looks pretty tough, we'll see if Robby can keep the wheels on it.
I hope he finishes, doesn't die, and places well enough to doit again next year. :)

Why? I thought they did a good job with the coverage of it last year. More coverage of it would be nice, but I'd say that about most non US motorsports.
And yes, I am excited.
Also, its interesting that Robby is running Toyos.

Yes they had a lot of coverage on all the americans competing (big surprise there considering that it was a broadcast made for the US) but they covered the other teams too.

I have two events per year I look forward to and watch every teleivised minute. The Tour de France and the Dakar rally raid. It's good Robby is on a vehicle/truck he is accustomed to driving. I hope he does well. The bikes have a pretty good effort on the Red-Bull KTM's. They are shooting for a podium.

lol, two problems with OLN.
One, I don't get OLN w/o paying for Digital Tier 2 or something like that :p Not worth it when the only thing on *any* of those channels worth watching is Dakar and Rally America.
Two, I was pretty underwhelmed when I did see it. Too much of a biopic on the American teams (which isn't a bad thing in moderation) and not enough actual racing. It was good, but it didn't do it for me like the past Speedvision and Speed Channel coverage did.

Agreed 1000%. The years I had Speed channel I watched all the Dakar coverage - tasteful handling of the sport, with educational bits and a lot of time spent covering the field.
OLN's coverage was unwatchable. When I saw that ignorant bubbly guy with the thick New Jersey accent out in the desert trying to talk to the drivers I was finished.
OLN's Tour de France coverage is top-notch, their untainted A1 GP coverage ideal (apart from the squashed aspect ratio), even the Rally America shows were ok, but Dakar? They need to leave the commentary to the experts.

Robby's truck this year isn't really a Hummer per-se. It's more like a SCORE Trophy Truck with the tube-frame chasis and a Hummer body shell on it and most likely, a Chevy powerplant. :)
Their support vehicles are actual Hummer H1's, though.

I admit that I know next to nothing about the Dakar Rally, but I was reading about the H3 entry into the rally (there's a nice writeup at Car and Driver), and it sort of bummed me out. Granted, I doubt that any of the other manufacturers use stock-based cars in the race, but I don't see how they can call the H3 entry an H3, when the only piece it seems to use from the production vehicle is the front grille. It's too NASCAR-ish for me, where the 'race car' has nothing in common with the street car. I wish they would've just called it the Chevy DakarDominator or something, and been honest about it.
| Howl | 12-24-2005 08:36 AM |
Rallying is about real cars on real roads.
Dakar isn't. It's about who can go from point A to point B the fastest. Some of the entries are home-built buggies. The problem is it is very expensive to build a competitive machine, so most teams make a deal with a manufacturer to dress up their vehicles to look like a production model. The manufacturer gets press and the team gets money. There are also factory entries, were the manufacturer assembles the vehicle and hires a team to drive it. Again, underneath these are not production vehicles, but are prototype designs that are in effect being tested.

Almost all of the factory cars/trucks are one-off race machines. The exterior looks original for obvious advertising reasons. Like all televised racing it's a show for the sponsors.
Imo in rallying I like to see special built hardware. Plus Dakar does not have roads so stock or stock prepared vehicles have a difficult time traversing at a quick enough pace to keep the general audience interested. In other words they have to crawl through much of the terrain just to finish. I like the speed and excitment race cars deliver.
Santa's brining my new dvd recorder just in time :D

There is nothing NASCARish about driving 9000 km trough most grueling conditions whether by motorcycle, one of those prototypes or 3 axels truck.
I hope I will not miss this year coverage on Speed. I remember they were showing one of the KAMAZ's trucks passing on straight line driving trough african beach one of the factory sponsored Pajero's
Memory bring me back when I was racing my military truck in Kazakstan desert. What a feeling!

| Foxy | 12-24-2005 11:49 AM |
Oh, I fully realize why the manufacturers do the things they do. It just seems dishonest to me. I'd be much more impressed if they had used, say, a heavily-modified H3 engine instead of a modified Corvette racing engine, or anything else mechanical off of the H3. The front grille? Give me a break. I understand that the H3 and other SUV's entered into the race would all die if they were left close to stock.. but it doesn't stop me from wishing, right? :)
It's a complaint I have about racing where the cars in the race bear no resemblance to the street cars, yet, they share the same name, etc.
Feropont, I never said that there was anything NASCAR-ish about the driving. The Dakar rally looks absolutely insane. I can't fathom doing what they're doing. It's certainly on a different level than making 800 left hand turns in a row.
However, it is absolutely NASCAR to me to say, "Hey, let's name our RWD, V8-powered, 2 door car after our FWD, I4/V6, 4 door family sedan!" Similarily, I don't like how they are calling a tube-frame chassied, V8 sand rail a H3, when the real H3 has a I5 engine. The "race on Sunday, sell on Monday," theme just doesn't work on me when it's such a huge disconnect between the race car and the street car. That's why I like watching Group N rally, Speed World Challenge, and similar series.

Can't wait, not just one of the best races in the world, it is one of the great events/spectacles/challenges in the world. I love the new rule this year limiting the on board GPS to only speed and direction which will force them to use the road book for directions.
No, it's not the same as WRC or Group N or SCCA, it's not supposed to be. We already have those, this is something different, and it is great. Survival of man and machine in the harshest of enviornments against a backdrop of racing-- there is nothing like Dakar, and IMHO all else pales in comparison.

That sucks big time for the DeRooys. They have been a mainstay for many many years. IMO a blow to the race and organisation.

remember that about 2/3 of the rally is at non-race speeds in transits, so I don't think 24 coverage would be too exciting.
first day coverage seemed ok to me, OLN is using the Euro feed for daily updates that they didn't do last year which I'm very happy about.
OLN is picking up more racing all the time with this, R/A rally and A1GP.

I have been very pleased with OLN's coverage this year, they are treating it like a motor sport instead of last year when it was more of an X-treme Axtion Sport y0! I am pretty sure however that those longer 1 hour shows will just be re-edits of the 1/2 hour shows, so don't get your hopes up too high.
I am following the action with the coverage, which is a day behind, so all my comments will follow as such....
First of all, it is great to see Il Madatore out there!! And in the WRC-like early stages he showed his form and drove the wheels off that thing. Let's hope he measures his pace carefully in Africa, although if you can expect any "rookie" to know enough to do that, it would be Sainz.
I'm very interested that Robbie's Hummer is 2WD, anyone have any thoughts on why they chose this route? He said they went with a heavier more stable vehicle rather than a small nimble one to impove performance in the dunes, let's hope that pays off.
Otherwise my favorites going in have to be Petterhansel (really going out on a limb with that one! :p) Roma (1st year on 4 wheels but has the experience), Saby, and my rooting interest Gordon.
Does anyone have any background on Miller the American driving the VW?

I'm very interested that Robbie's Hummer is 2WD, anyone have any thoughts on why they chose this route? He said they went with a heavier more stable vehicle rather than a small nimble one to impove performance in the dunes, let's hope that pays off.
Otherwise my favorites going in have to be Petterhansel (really going out on a limb with that one! :p) Roma (1st year on 4 wheels but has the experience), Saby, and my rooting interest Gordon.
Does anyone have any background on Miller the American driving the VW?

Coverage isn't half bad. Much better than last year, of course. Was it 2004 when they had the excellent daily coverage?

I know last year Robby very publicly said the VW's compact and short travel design beat the F out of it's occupants. He was not a happy camper.
I am looking forward to seeing that 30" or so travel smoothly walk by the bouncy little cars everyone else is so accustomed to.

I love innovation, but you have to question whether it's wise to discount so many years of development that have led to the currently successful form factor.

What happened to yesterday's coverage? They played the first day's coverage again?

Well as Gordon doesn't seem to have a time for todays stage and the tracking gizmo just shows him stopped on the course those may be fitting words.

Good point and true, big trucks have been run in the past. Maybe it's just not rough enough or all out speed over the rough stuff is not that important? Maneuverability(sp) and navigation may be the key.
The winners in the past have also had major factory support along with huge support during the event. The trucks that have run in the past along with Robby's effort is basically a privateer effort.

I think the OLN coverage has been quite decent.
Have the Windows MCE set up to record all week @ 4:00pm.

There's also the need to go full-bore for at least a few hours every day, plus a lot of highway-speed miles (9,000km's in all), for 15 straight days with virtually no time for major repairs. Driving a regular trophy truck in the Dakar would be like driving an F1 car in the 24 Heures Du Mans. You might do okay for the first quarter of the race, but you won't last the distance.
