Atlanta ProSolo

I saw a few Subaru people signed up. I signed up and am making the trek from Wisconsin. Atlanta is a fairly easy drive from here once you get through Chicago. I saw Jeff Cashmore is also going down. I talked Andrew Scott (ascott) into going in STX and another guy from Louisville is going along as well. I may have a co-driver from here going down with me as well. It better not be cold down there! I'm sure we can get together in Atlanta as I know at least some of the local guys. Anyone have any hotel recommendations for that area?

Phil when is the Pro in Atlanta? If your co-driver cheeses out I may be interested, if it is cool with you.
By the way, how is the new engine doing?:D

Second week of February, the 14th/15th. I'll let you know. You should bring the STI down. The engine is running ok but the car is still very untuned, I have about 850 miles on it now. Probably won't have it tuned very well until late January. All the oil and gas leaks are fixed though. :)

I'll have my hands full as the regional chairperson of the event, but I'll be there. I'm also doing the Evolution dial-in school the Thursday beforehand. Stay tuned for more hotel info. I'm negotiating group rates at the HIlon Garden Inn and the Hampton. Should be in the $70 range for the Hilton and hopefully mid $50s for the Hampton.

BTW, it may be cold. You pretty much roll the dice and see what you get in Atlanta that time of year. Actually that's pretty much any time of year. I think it was 65 yesterday...
I would have liked to have done it later in the year, and I actually would have rather had a tour than a pro, but you take what you can get from National. The tour calendar was set months ago; I'm gunning for 2005 on that one...

I'll be the one getting my a** kicked in Street Mod driving a naturally aspirated 2.5RS... Fortunately, I'm also taking the EVO Phase 1 school at the same site the Thursday before the event! :D

Is there anything special to know about participating in a prosolo event? (I have a season of soloII under my belt, but thats all)
I have never been and could use any advice you guys might be willing to share...
Is a regular soloII license usable for prosolo?
Thanks a lot,
Scott

There's no such thing as a Solo-II License. :)
That said, you DO need to be an SCCA member and pre-register.
The 1st ProSolo you can run without needing a ProSolo license (pay the fee, you get the license).
The ProSolo is a National compeititon that takes place in 8 or 10 cities this year where the drivers need 3 of 4 events to qualify for the ProSolo national finals in Topeka in September. This is some of the closest, exciting, FUN auto-xing you'll ever see as some of the nations best talent comes to play. If there were ever a series that could be televised... the ProSolo series is it.
There are two courses run at the same time by two cars, mirrors of each other (never come near crossing) where both cars start out at a drag tree. The lights go down, you go do your side. Once you trip the lights from the finish, you slowly corss over to the other side, line up to the lights again and run the opposite direction of the course you just finished.
You do 4 runs on Sat morning (2 on the left and two on the right), 4 runs on Sat afternoon (again 2 left/2 right) and 4 more on Sunday morning. Your best left side and best right side runs are then added together to get your final time.
The thing that makes the ProSolos what they are is those 12 runs you did, are qualification to get you into the Sunday Afternoon Super Challenge, where the class winners (and the rest of the drivers closest to the class winners time fill the 32 spots... except at Finale) face off aginst each other in an elimination series on indexted time. The tree no longer starts at the same time for each driver. It'll give the slower cars a head start. It's just like drag racing where an auto-x happened. The car to finish 1st, factoring in their reaction time (.500 is a perferct light) wins. :)
Red lighting will get you a DNF. Red lighting in the challenge is a big nono... and I've done it TWICE in Two years at the Finale. This eyar was an even bigger oops than in 2002. *sigh*. One of these days.
Hope to see you there!

yeah, ProSolos are way more fun then a regular auto-x. the competition is pretty fierce but don't worry about that, just go out and have a good time and meet people from around the country.
no atlanta for me, but dallas, peru, toledo, and maybe oscoda instead :)

Atlanta's a bit of a haul for me.:( Plus, my car is currently set up with the stock suspension for Ice Trials!:p
I'll definitely be doing the Pro's this year - Farmington OR Dallas, Peru, Toledo, and Oscoda.

That sounds great, KC. I appreciate the detailed response.
I can only assume, since you run back to back, that any cold weather would be nice for the azenis'??

Yes, especially since they have changed things a little.
You used to run Left -> Right then rest for a while then run Right -> Left. Then You're done for the morning. Same thing for the afternoon and Sunday.
However, that's changed this year (and may be temporoary) to Left -> Right -> Left -> Right. No rest in the middle and no L-R-R-L. They figure that it'll help keep the event moving, but I cnanot remember a time when there was a gap waiting for cars get to the line....
In places where it gets really hot, it's gonna be messy for many cars... not only for overheated tires, but overheated cars. 30 seconds of hard running then another 30-50 seconds or so waiting to get back into line... repeat that 3 tmes and some cars made to run short durations are gonig to have some engine cooling problems. (You can no longer cool down your tires/IC/Radiator after the 1st 2 runs like you were able to do before).
In the beginning it might work because temps are generally cooler... but once we hit summer... I think it's gonna get messy...

I had a question about the run order. Is the big change that their is no rest in the middle? Previously was the grid split up so other cars run while you are resting? Do you run head to head against cars in your class, or do you all run the same sequence?

Cool Damon! I'll give you a call tonight.
I had one more question, probably for autoxrxer. Are you going to have rule books forsale at the event? I'm going to assume having the rulebook will be required for the event. When does the 2004 rulebook come out? :)

If I take my car, it's 2 1/2 days without pay. If I fly, it's 1/2 day.
Since they upped the Prosolo requirements from 2 of three to 3 of four, most of the prosolos now are 1000 miles away... with the cosest to me being 600 (Petersburg). ;)
I'm not complaining, I love it. When you figure 4 pros max... that' going to be 10 days of leave right there...
Then a week and a half for nationals.... and we're up to 20 days. When you get 10 days/year vacation.... I lose about 2 weeks worth of salary. I'm just lucky to work for a company that lets me take this time off! :D
Thanks Mike. I need to make flight arrangements soon if I'm a gonna fly. :)

Hey Damon, the highest number you can use at a national event is 99. And one of the drivers needs to have a number 100 greater than your number. So if Nate is signed upas 5, you have to be 105, or vice versa.

How a ProSolo usually works:
Friday afternoon---
- 1PM Tech Usually opens until 4-5pm (Cannot remember EXACT time)
- Between 2PM and 3PM You can do Practice Starts. You purchase tickets for these starts. It is used to become familiar with the tree.
- Practice Starts end when all tickets are used
- Registration opens for a little while after practice starts. This is usually around 5pm. You need a CURRENT rule book to show them.
Saturday Morning----
- Arrive early to walk course.
- Registration is open for a little while in the morning to help late arrivals. If it closes and you're not checked in, have a nice weekend! :)
- Novice explanation right before running starts. This explains the lights, grid, pregrid and event operation.
- 1st runs are around 8Am to 9AM (Dunno exact time... they start when they start.) ;)
- Everone does 4 runs according to run groups (will be posted at event)
- You line up in grid by Car Number
Saturday Afternoon---
- Course open for walking between Morning and Afternoon runs.
- Everone does 4 more runs according to run groups (same as morning)
- You line up in grid by PLACE you finished in the morning.
- If everything goes well, done by 5PM
Sunday Morning---
- Starts a little earlier because everyone should be ready to go.
- Make sure you got your course walks in. :)
- Everone does 4 runs according to run groups (will be posted at event)
- You line up in grid by PLACE you finished Saturday of day times
- If everything goes well, done by noon.
Sunday Afternoon---
- Open Class winners and those closest in time fill up 32 spots for the Super Challenge elimination rounds where there will be one definite winner. :) Ladies Classes also go head to head. The Honda Street Challenge winner is decided via points that I'm not all to familiar with.
AWARDS Immediately Following Challenges. Stick around for these! Even if you don't get any! :)
Hope this helps. :)

Corey, I am almost half temped to ask if you want a co-driver. You could pick me up at the Baltimore Airport.

Hmm... I pass right by Baltimore... It'a only about 3 hours from me. I'm waiting for an answer from a local guy here Pat. If he doesn't take the deal then we'll have to talk more about that idea!

Thanks KC for helping a Prosolo newb. One question. You said we need to show them a Current rule book. Does that mean everyone has to own a rule book? Is it the same as the solo 2 rule book?

That's why I asked earlier about whether they would have rule books forsale there or not. The 2004 book is supposed to be out soon? Last I looked I couldn't find my 2003 one and the SCCA is slow as molasses about sending rule books out.

It may not be enforced for Atlanta. Who knows. They may have them there for sale. Again, who knows.
The ladies in the truck know full well of the supply situaton. I guess... try and get one. If you can't well don't worry about it and explain the situation. They're human. :)
But come other national events in April/May... you should have one by then. :)

ProSolo license

KC, can you give me more info on this:
The ProSolo NationalSeries provides national-level competition in a series structure using the all the regular national Solo II classes. While entrants must be SCCA members, a ProSolo license is not required until their second ProSolo event of the season, when they officially become part of the ProSolo NationalSeries Championship series.
How do we go about getting a license? I will be doing at least 3 ProSolo's this year...

OK- got some info. Rookie as it is on the sign up sheet- that means you have never done a ProSolo event- hence you have no ProSolo license. Looks like a few of us need to change or reg. info (Nate...)
