Atlanta ProSolo part 2

racerjon1 04-12-2005 04:32 PM

i will be at the Pro, co-driving Steven's RS of course, my first pro solo effort, it was weird to check the "rookie" box.

Biggly, I am looking forward to the battle of the Evos in Ohio this weekend, I will be driving the AMS Evo VIII in One Lap, and so with friends at both TopSpeed and AMS its going to be fun to see them shoot it out, for me its a "win-win" situation. I almost wish I was going up to watch.

(ahhh! Did I just think about watching a drag race over running an autocross? Must be a lack of sleep.)

So I have a problem. 2 tire places can't get my V710s mounted on my wheels... any place down in atlanta that is known to work miracles with getting tires to fit? One of the places gets 225/50-15 Hoosiers on 5" Honda wheels.

Also.. will there be any tire support from Hoosier at the Pro in the chance that I have to buy some Hoosiers, I can have them mounted there?

This sucks.
AUTOwrXER 04-12-2005 05:26 PM

No tire support. Tom doesn't come down this far. Knowledge has squeezed on a number of oversized tires while I've been up there working on my car. Recently I saw 275s go on a 7.5" wheel. Heath McMillan has also had them squeeze some pretty big tires on his Honda, but I don't know the specific sizes...

I'll be going over to Knowledge on Thursday night or Friday morning to have a fresh set of tires mounted (after destroying the current set in the dial-in school).

What 5 lb sausage are you trying to get into what 1 lb bag?

Putting some 245/35-18s (V710) on some 18x9s took three guys.
trhoppe 04-12-2005 05:34 PM

There is also Gran Turismo. I'm hesitant in recommending them because of my "close" tire shave, but they are a racer shop, so they should be able to do the tires if Knowledge can't

-Tom
WJM 04-12-2005 05:34 PM

215/50 on a 5 inch took one. :p

Im sure that Tom Hoppe knows someone in ATL that can do it.

If i can get a tire machine im 100% sure *I* can do it by myself.

edit: speaking of Tom...he just ninja posted right as I did. :disco:

I've personally seen 245/35-18s on my wheels that I have. It took 1.5 hrs to do all 4.

Just the people I've taken it too have having difficulties with it.

I remember seeing a website which had a list of shops that had the latest Hunter tire changing gear, I can't find it now. One of these could put a 285 on a 6" wide rim using only one hand.

Joel...

Any contact info for those places so if I show up on Friday with some wheels, I can get them on? The Hoosiers would have to be delivered to your place Friday by Friday afternoon. I'd like a plan B if they can't get the 710s mounted... and that's Hoosiers.

Who would I have to call or contact tomorrow to let them know I might be coming down? I can stop anywhere on the east coast tomorrow if anyone knows of anyone that can do this with the good equipment that TyrannoSully posted.

Corey 04-13-2005 07:56 AM

Keith,

(Time to plug my sponsor)

Phoenix Performance in Palm, PA has the TC3500 that TyrannoSully linked to. They mount Corvette racing tires all the time, and never have a problem with any of my stuff. You could give Kurt a call... to see if he will be around when you would be passing through. Tell him Corey sent you. 215-679-2232

Corey #89 STS
KC 04-13-2005 08:08 AM

I'll call them this morning... I wasn't planning on being in PA until 5ish... But if I have to leave earlier, then I will. I was planning on working 1/2 day and leaving from work and it would take 5 hrs to get there... not breaking any speeding laws. (Especially through CT).

--KC
KC 04-13-2005 09:07 AM

Just called, Kurt is out the next 2 days, but the nice lady that answered the phone said I can get them done tomorrow. I plan on being there around 3ish barring any traffic.

If that's not the machine that Knowledge Performance uses, it's a slight variation on the design. It's very wheel-friendly as well.

Anybody need a little extra power for the ProSolo?
Hey guys,

We've got several folks coming by to get an STX or ESP legal tune done for the ProSolo, so we thought we'd post up and say hey.

If anyone needs a little extra power for the weekend, give us a call here at the shop. We're running a special for ProSolo competitors and we have several kickass EcuTeK maps developed for STX, SM, STU and ESP. The pricing for this is too low to post here... :D :D

We'll be open as late as necessary (1AM? 2AM? sure!) for anyone who is interested.

Thanks!

That was my first ProSolo, and it was so much better than a normal autocross. Not getting completed annihilated by the Mini's certainly helped, but with the drag start, multiple runs back to back, etc, the format is just great.

My high points for the weekend:
-1.996 60'
-0.507 RT
-Only 0.034s slower than 1st place GS on the left course....and yes it was a Mini

This is what my best run on the right course looked like:
http://filebox.vt.edu/users/pgillett/23%20GS%20-%20ATL%20PRO.AVI
If only I hadn't decided to try running part of my last run on the right course in neutral.

Tara has a video of Karen launching Stompy, as well as a video of the 55 L2 WRX eating first gear on the launch.

Hopefully everyone got home safely.
WJM 04-17-2005 10:18 PM

I guess I wasnt too bad for a first timer....had a few HORRIBLE RTs...some around and over the 1 second mark.
wrx2.0 555 04-18-2005 06:35 AM

My first PRO also.........
I ruined my first set of runs....dnf/28.5 on the left and one cone on each run on the right. :(
Didnt improve that afternoon on the left but made clean 27.4 run on the right---got bumped up 3 spots.
Sunday I lost time on both sides--dont know why--ended up almost dfl for the weekend.

I most definetly enjoyed this more than the Tour, though. Must do this again, for sure. :)

and I had an absolute blast this past weekend. Even made it out to my first car show with some suby boyz. we had fun  !!! Hopefully makin it out to another event but we'll see- ohio and michigan are a bit far.
SMiLEY 04-18-2005 01:23 PM

That was a ton of fun, and soooo different from a normal autocross!

My first day I decided to run on my ancient 215/45/16 Azenis (215) for better acceleration. Unfortunately they were about as grippy as hockey pucks and I was 8th of 10 in STX. For my last set of runs the next day I put the 225/45/17 Azenis (215) on and I ran a few tenths faster on the left and over 1 sec. better on the right. I kept bogging the launches on the bigger wheels, but I managed to pull up to 7th at least. Places 4-8 were all very close together in combined times though.

Oh, and good driving folks!

-Jeff Hunt
jcroy66 04-18-2005 02:27 PM

Well, Phil and I had a blast, as always. Great to see you again Billy, Jason, Corey, Tom, Karen, Mike, KC. Great to meet you Tara, Scott, Will, Porter, Doug, Joel, "fullup1" (I'm sorry, I remember you and your car, but I'm just awful with names!!)! I know I'm missing naming some other NASIOC folks too, but my brain is a little fried from the whirlwind weekend. And I know there were a few Subaru folks that I don't think I met at all. Hopefully next time I can meet a few more of you. Every Pro I meet a couple more folks... :)

Corey, I totally forgot about giving Anthony the Kumho contingency forms. Please apologize to him for me. I hope he got them from Karen?

Tara, I hope you can make it to the other Pros. I love having other Suby girls in L2 with me!! Cuz Karen, you're not racing Stompy at the other Pros, right? And actually, what class is your RS in, Tara? Maybe you wouldn't be in L2 at the next Pro either... :(

Lessons learned from this Pro:

A 0.000 index is sweet! First place here I come!! Woohoo! For all of 5 seconds. (Until they noticed that somehow didn't seem right. )
When you get a Manual Start, don't even THINK about saying you're ready for at least 6 seconds. Cuz that's at least as long as it should take. When the starter asks if you're ready, pretend the shot clock is at 6-7 and it's time to start revving, looking ahead to the course, etc. Cuz if you say "oh sure, I'm ready" like a dingbat, you end up with the tree going while you're idling, a 1.3 RT, a 2.4 60', a completely wasted run, and blown concentration for the rest of your runs. :furious:
Don't even look at "how much time do I have to drop tomorrow to make it in the Challenge". If you focus on dropping X amount of time, you won't. Period. *sigh* I know this, so why can't I ever actually DO it??? I was nice and relaxed for Saturday afternoon. And so I did very well (at least I think so! :D ) I move into a trophy position and POW! All of a sudden, I realize I'm only a little over a second back, so I actually have a shot at giving Karen and Danielle a run for their money, and so I biff. Zero improvement on Sunday morning. Zip, nada.
Evolution instructor co-drivers ROCK. Phil and I often tell each other "you look a little slow, so drive faster". But having someone tell me "you look a little slow going through X section, so drive faster" makes an amazing difference.
Atlanta's traffic is truly awful. We were making great time and thought we'd make it to the event site around 1:30. Loads of time to get ready before practice starts. Hah! Nope, add an extra hour and a half for Atlanta traffic. Grrr...
Darrin is an unhappy camper, after Tasha tells him she's not even gonna try his T&S improvements and he just wasted a thousand hours of time... It's been a long time since I've seen anyone quite that livid. Mike, I actually saw you earlier, over in Tech, but I wasn't gonna go say hi until Darrin had calmed down (or wandered somewhere else to go ballistic). I hope he didn't let it bother his driving. :(
Don't let Tom make dinner plans. Make dinner plans and then TELL Tom where he should meet you for dinner. :D (You know I love you, sweety, so don't worry about it, I just like to tease you... )
Almost no one wants to go out drinking with you when you're saddled with your parents. Thank you Corey for not only putting up with my 'rents but even buying them dinner! You rock!
Oh, and finally, let me just say. Doug and TopSpeed are the BOMB. I'll be updating Tom's "STX maps" thread with more details soon... [/teaser]

Thanks Jen. My car would be in L2 because I normally run STS. *sigh* The only reasons i'm in there is because of my intake- and i have a front strut brace and now a wrx rear sway bar on POS michelin all season tires. I do decently locally but I know its not even close to being anywhere set up for STS and I haven't been able to convince myself to take out the CAI because it sounds sooooo good. I think i might get really pwn3d if I end up making it. Haven't exactly figured out what's going on for the summer- plus my parents already think i'm nuts and I'm not sure how well they're going to take to me traveling the country all summer long for autox. I do plan on making nationals in Mass in early July because its only 3 hours from home! But after having my arm pulled a few different ways by a few different people to go to the pro event this weekend- who knows, i'll probably end up at a few more events :)

Did anyone get any pics from this weekend? Curt Kitchen is looking for some photos to choose from for the press release (since I was too busy to take any). I don't think Mom and Dad got any of the Challenge winners. Mostly just me, Phil, and Ron (who was at least a class winner!). Maybe 1 or 2 of Corey (another class winner) and/or Billy. But I can't confirm at the moment, cuz the camera is at home (and I'm at work for another half hour or so). Do you think he's be interested in any of those?

I just realized that Stompy would have had the perfect possible result for both the Tour and the Pro if you had found that 0.019! KC 04-19-2005 08:38 AM

My thoughts are my own! :D I made it home with nary an issue. The weather all weekend down and back was great.

Actually.. here's a few things...

1) Walk the course before putting on a larger front bar. Sweepers were not my friend.
2) Cops are tricky bastages on interstates. One doing radar in a truck stop tucked in between semis... one 1 mile up the road.. another 1 mile up the road from that. (I wasn't pulled over, but all three pulled over people coming up behind me)
3) My speedo reads 3 mph too fast. And that's probably a good thing. Entering one construction area, the 'Your Speed Is' was 3mph slower than what I has the cruise set at and at that only read for a split second (only car in the area) and then changed to slower. Entering another area... only car in the readable area... it couldn't get a fix on me here either. RX-8 = stealth? :D
4) 25 miles to the gallon on a rotary is very nice.

It was nice meeting all the same faces again and meeting new ones at the event. Thanks to Joel for being a gracious host. Great event and overall nice guy. [Homer]MMMmmm Class. [/Homer]

Can't wait until the next event!
