Autometer- finally! part 2

virpacalis 05-28-2003 07:14 PM

Someone at Cobb's forum has pic's and installation advice. I've already painted mine, which arrived today, changing it from shiny black to a flat black. After my Saturday installation I'll post a review and pic's too.

Was there one offered for the GC8? 2.5RS
Kwyjibo 05-28-2003 09:51 PM

I got mine today too...and it looks like a piece of junk.

I don't know if it is even worth the effort to take out my dual pillar pod (which I don't really like), and put this POS in...

I can't believe they couldn't get a decent color match with the stock bezel....i mean it IS made for the WRX and they all have the same color bezel so it probably couldn't have been too difficult to ask for a good color match....

and for the price i really did expect a MUCH higher quality piece.
AndyWRXWG 05-28-2003 10:00 PM

well I saw post in the cobb forums where it fit perfectly with no obstruction of the spedo or the turn signals. So seems like there are either a few bad peices or like they said in the e-mail there might be a trick to installing it that you might not have done. I was thinking of getting this as well, but haven't decided what other gauge to put in so haven't ordered it yet. Hmm well hopefully this will be cleared up soon.

I don't know if you're referring to the thread found here on Cobb's Forum, but if you are:
It clears the top silver ring of the speedo 100%, but cuts the tach and left silver rings slightly as seen in pic. Turn signal lights are much lower than the top silver ring and are 100% visible.
What bugs me is the "..cuts the tach and left silver rings..." part. There's no reason for this to happen since the bezel is replaced -- the top part should fit just like the OEM one does. :(
AndyWRXWG 05-29-2003 10:03 PM

Oh I totaly agree, there should be no problem at all. I mean this is not a "cheap" part that I would expect this type of thing from.

As for the cobb post I did see the one you referanced, but I swear I've seen at least one post of someone who got it in perfectly with no obstructions what so ever. Either way if it were a good quality part we wouldn't have to worry about it.
Costanza 05-29-2003 10:13 PM

Matt from Autometer just sent me this email:
Henry,
I wanted to give you an update on the bezel situation. We were hoping a simple reprogramming of the way it is trimmed would fix this problem. However, after further investigation and test fittings, it appears the only real fix is a modification of the mold. The good news is we expect to have "fixed" product in about two weeks. We completely agree with the posts indicating our unit should fit like the OEM unit is replaces. We stand behind our products and plan on replacing units for those that are unhappy. I will keep your email and others that contact me and will notify you when we have the re-tooled bezels.

I would appreciate it if you could post this on the forum.

Thanks,

thumbs up to Autometer for remedying the problem.
MorePower 05-29-2003 11:16 PM

Good for them.

If they fix it and it fits, I'd probably buy one. Until then, I'll just wait and see.
drees 05-30-2003 01:56 AM

Yep, props to Autometer. Glad they are acking the problem and working on fixing it. A lot better than some other vendors out there.
Undepelo 05-30-2003 08:24 AM

Hey if you are still in contact with the peeps at Autometer, suggest they mold the parts in a dark gray that matches the rest of the trim. All WRX I believe have the same color. ;)
MorePower 05-30-2003 02:46 PM

Yeah, what Undepelo said.

I've actually got use to how it looks and the fitment problem doesn't really bother me too much anymore.
Snitt 06-01-2003 12:36 PM

I was disappointed when I first started reading this thread, because I've been waiting for this to come out before I start putting in gauges. But, if they fix it in their second version, I will definitely buy it.

Ha! I'm still waiting on the GC8 accessories. :o
Kwyjibo 06-01-2003 04:48 PM

I think i'm gonna send mine back.

I just tried to fit it and was VERY dissapointed.

Not only does the back hang too low, but I couldn't figure out how to re-use that rubber piece attached to the OEM bezel. I also thought the way the edges sit against the car sucks.

When I was putting the stock one back in I was impressed at how well the STOCK bezel fits without the screws holding it in...

Autometer better fix this...and I WILL NOT pay one dime to ship this one back and get a new one. It is their problem and it is up to them to fix it...It's inexcuseable.

Man am I pissed...I waited so long for this...

If you look in the Thesaurus for autometer I'm sure the word crap will be listed next to it.
blackdog 06-02-2003 10:14 AM

Bummer about the bezel fit quality. It would be great to have a gauge setup that looked stock. The problem for Autometer is that in the 04 model, the odometer is no longer in the middle. It's on the right now, because the speedometer is on the right. The right hand gauge would block the odometer. So even if Autometer wants to redesign the bezel to fit and color match better, it would only work on the 02-03. That's probably too limited a market to make it worthwhile.
Stilletto 06-02-2003 09:49 PM

blackdog,

Looking back at Costanza's picture (below) I don't think it would block the odo much. I'm guessing the odo is in the center of the right gauge and about the same size as the current one, but I'm not sure.

Well here are some of my pictures. It was getting late so these are at night. I will take better ones in the day. I was also tired of messing with it. I will take it back out and use the heat gun some more. I made a big difference then when I first got it out of the box. Well I will take more pics if you guys want, ya know, different angles and what not. Just let me know.

teamzzyzx, you did a great job remolding your bezel. Looks a lot better than the others, hardly obstructs the top of the stock gauges now.
MorePower 06-04-2003 10:02 AM

Well, just to add to the dilema, over on ClubWRX in a thread very similar to this one, there is someone with a prototype of this same piece. The main difference is that the gauges are angled toward the center slightly and don't seem to block the tach/speedo.

http://www.clubwrx.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27130&perpage=20&pagenumber=2

Of course, it will be available "soon". :p

However, it does look like the guages are actually angled towards the middle too much, but it's hard to tell as there wasn't any pics from the drivers view.

Autometer bezel pod
Review: After painting the shiny black piece flat black, I had it installed at ILP Performance with 52mm VDO boost & EGT gauges. The piece hangs lower than stock up top; mine cuts off the the top lines on the speedo, the tops of the turn signals, the 9K part of the tach (this last detail, no big deal). In any case, it interferes with no essential data and brings other important information into a very nice driver's view, one that other drivers cannot see (stealth is good). IMO, even with its shortcomings, it's a nicer arrangement than many a-pillar and dash-mount setups.

Better quality views of mine can be found at http://www.lafreak.com/html/virpacalis.html.

The fit of the prototype on clubwrx.net seems much better than Autometer's. But the Autometer angles IMO are fine. Given that we waited a long time for Autometer's arrival, I'll be happy with it until a better alternative becomes readily available.
mrazntre 06-04-2003 07:46 PM

that other gauge pod looks pretty nice. it appears as if it's out of the way... plus it's bubbly looking. .nice!
djerickd 06-04-2003 07:55 PM

I betcha that other pod was built using the stock one as it's "base" and moulded cups out of fiberglass.

Yeah, although they claim it is going into production... If the Autometer one fit, I'd probably just go with it. I think I'll just keep waiting. Sigh... oh well, I have other toys to keep me busy until then.

Where the heck did that come from:confused:

Day 2: I still haven't been able to get it completely installed yet....the gauges refuse to let the assembly line up correctly with the metal brackets on....i have two carbon fiber series gauges...how did you guys get them in without breaking and warping the whole cheap thing??
teamzzyzx 06-07-2003 03:01 PM

just put the screw through the plastic first then look behind it to see where the bracket is, then bend accordingly. thats what i did and it worked out just fine.

You're right, although I paid $48 for mine through out Autometer Distributor at work. I can tell you right not I wouldn't have paid anymore. You not only have to bend the bracket, but heat gun the hell out of it to make it not cut off the speedo.
Stilletto 06-09-2003 11:05 PM

Ok all installed....looks great...not cutting off anything but it did take 2 DAYS!!!!!!!

The instructions about the two little brackets at the bottom were WRONG...it was backwards...did anybody else notice this?

And, the holes had to be drilled out a little to get the screws to fit.....and the damn clips at the top kept falling off....

What a nightmare....depressing but after all was done it serves its purpose and actually is quite neat looking.....except for my brand new carbon fiber boost which i have found the face is a little off center, like to the left....Autometer is giving me a headache....
128d 06-09-2003 11:27 PM

These are all very good reasons why not to buy anything Autometer.

Most likely just camera angle.

We installed 2 today and they were exact.
Kwyjibo 06-23-2003 11:06 PM

I am VERY dissapointed in autometer and will probably NEVER buy one of their products again.

First this shody guage pod, which we waited MONTHS and MONTHS for.....

I emailed them about it and got NO reply.

and this one might be fixed, but I bet it is still garbage....

When I test fitted mine it was not only the spedo being blocked that bugged me, but the way it sits up agains the dash was horrible...

Also, the OEM piece has this rubber attached to it. If you move your steering wheel all the way down you can see it. The autometer piece does not have this rubber, nor has a way to attach the OEM rubber to its pod (not a way I saw anyway).

Bottom line is even though I don't like the look of the a-pillar, i'll keep it becasue I think it fits better than this POS autometer is trying to sell us.
