I am pretty sure that car is painted with a special paint that duplicates aluminum....

You will not be able to get the hood anodised unless you find someone to acid dip it and get all of the bonding agent out of it. The anodiser will not take the chance of ruining his vat with that crap. It would look cool..but way too much work to keep up and over time it will get thin....good for weight...bad for looks (the suns heat could warp it at that point)....just get it fixed....
That car was actually bare aluminum polished to a mirror finish as a show car for the new aluminum body.
Go for anodized!
an entire car blue anodized would bo hard to accomplish, but would definitly be interesting

It'd be much easier with a convertable...somebody should definately do it. But I just meant anodizing instead of a clear paint finish or something equally tacky. Clear anodized would always have that nice sort of waxed finish on the bare aluminum.

you would cause like 9230429348-012384 accidents a day, let alone your hood in the summer could be used as a griddle!!

do it!

do it take a chance, worst case get it repainted.
axelthrasher 01-16-2008 12:49 PM

Was this ever done - post pics ASAP. I would really like to see how this looks.
ekw 01-16-2008 01:11 PM

wow.
sometimes 34 months goes by in the blink of an eye.
nice bump of a vintage thread.
ride5000 08-14-2009 10:01 AM

still haven't done it.

my hood, however, has progressively stripped itself of more paint, and grabbed a couple more dents in the mean time.
vision.dynamix 08-14-2009 11:44 AM

Im off to the junkyard to find a hood to polish now..
JavaBot 08-14-2009 11:57 AM

Only thing about this... what will you do with your hoodscoop? If you strip that down you'll get to plastic.... Keep that part painted?
vision.dynamix 08-14-2009 12:00 PM

Carbon.

Actually..Im going to try to find a flat hood..

The RS hoods are made of steel. Polishing that will give you a very different look.

I woulld not leave it raw at all. AL is very eisily stained and if water drys on it it will most likely leave perminent water spots. the only way to slightly combat this is to polish it to a mirror, which in your case would suck and is illegal in most states. getting it anno'd would be expencive but look very cool and rock chips wouldnt effect it unless they scratched deep.

"perminent water spots"?

two seconds with a fine scotchbrite pad = nice virgin aluminum all over again
SomeoneWhoIsntMe 08-14-2009 04:02 PM

leave it raw aluminum, it'd be like the VW rust hood thing, but cooler

edit: the company that became fuji heavy industries left a lot of it's fighters raw aluminum in world war 2, and they looked pretty sick.

I saw a Scion at SEMA that was done like this, of course the bumpers were painted to match, but everything else was bare metal scuffed up to look brushed and then was cleared... IAG has some pics of it on their site...

I think that scion looks like crap. But to each their own i guess.
verdee 08-15-2009 12:21 PM

I think it could look good, but it is going to be very shiny. And to get it shiny, it is going to be a lot of work. I recently built myself a hackinstosh, and wanted to polish the case. It took me hours upon hours, and I still couldn't get it right, and eventually I bit the bullet and took it to a metal polisher and it came out like this.

wait wtf this thread is from '06
borisbsp 08-15-2009 05:44 PM

It's possible to scuff (directionally as seen with the Scion) the bare aluminum hood, then clear coat it. You can probably paint a flat or satin clear that won't attract as much attention as polished.

you build it and put it in a stock mac pro case? nice
avionator 08-17-2009 03:34 PM

a couple people have done this with miatas. the ones i'm familiar with did a mirror finish. looks kinda neat, but aluminum actually scratches easier than the paint did. the 3m idea is cool though! i'm a scoobie-newbie, so a quick question: do the 08/09's have aluminum hoods? (2.5i, base model 5 door)

 '05 actually.
1MPR3ZA 08-17-2009 05:42 PM

OK. Scuff and clear. This is prob. the easiest and most efficient. I work at a body shop and asked the paint rep about this. He said the clear will stick just not as well as it would to paint. So, worse case scenario is that it may be easier to chip. (rocks or other minor oopsies) But this is what I would do. Use a scuff pad and go in the same direction. Like a green one from the kitchen. THIS WILL LOOK GOOD!
imprezaowner27 08-17-2009 05:50 PM

just do it
