^^Thats cool, but I am also gonna replace my clock with the Defi triple gauge pod as well, so thats not an option for me.

I had asked this question a while back and some people posted some pics. I ended up putting mine in the glove compartment. Had to drill a small hole in the back of it, but it works nicely. I can take a picture of my setup tomorrow, since it's dark out now, if you want.
Edit: In addition to the switching circuit to allow the gauges to dim with the dimmer switch, I rigged up a little circuit to inline with the output of that circuit that is a 15-turn, 10k Ohm adjuster pot from Radio shack and put a 1k Ohm (I think that was it) resistor across the 2 outside legs. That way I can adjust the relative gauge brightness, since the Defi gauges were brighter at the same dimmer switch level. Just sat in my car at night in the dark with a small screwdriver and adjusted the level... it looks almost even now, really nice and handy :D

Buttons light up white no matter what color gauges you get. The color of the buttons can be changed though. Magic marker is the very cheap way and looks half ass.....you actually color in the top of the LED. Buying new surface mount LED's is the proper way and you can order what ever color you want. On the one in the S2000 above I kept the hyper white LED color but installed 2 extra ones. There is 3 that come stock in it.....now his has 5!

Soldering surface mount LED's is not for your average person. If you have extensive practice with a soldering iron then go for it. You would need a .5mm tip with a very low heat. If you are interested I can point you the right direction for the SM LED's

Lots and lots of grinding. The back of the control unit, the circuit board and the chassis of the cup holder all have to be ground down. The part where the unit sits below the vent has to be ground to perfection and so does the cup holder face. Then there is all of the material above the radio back in the dash that has to be ground out. I had to custom make two brackets that mount to the piece that holds the vents. It took about 6 solid hours of grinding and fabrication just to mount it there....that does not include wiring it or anything. I was also moving at a pretty good clip since I do this type of stuff for a living. Most would have a difficult time grinding into the circuit board of their brand new conrtol unit.
If anyone would like to attempt this they can send me a pm with their phone # and I would be glad to call you. It is easier to explain on the phone. Just leave a name, # and best time to reach you.

I have mines inside the armrest compartment. It's nice and stealthy but I am going to be recording my drives a lot later on so I'm relocating it into the Forester DIN pocket (looks stock).
That is a nice place for the people with single din headunits.

How about the rest of you my05'ers out there? Where have you mounted the control unit?
| rainwrx | 03-27-2005 07:51 PM |
Inside glove box. I used velcro/tape to mount to top of glove box. Nice and clean, out of the way, but still easy to reach to check peaks, etc. Easy to run wires into cockpit in that location as well.

Regarding Broadfield's setup, it certainlly is nice, but I think we can all agree that the cup holder is pointless, so why not install the Defi unit in place of the cup holder? This is what I intend to do in the next couple weeks. I've disassembled the dash already. At the time I can't forsee having to grind the Defi unit at all. I'll share my results soon.

Here's mine. I removed the glove compartment, took the compartment apart to cut holes for the wires and to run them. It's pretty clean, you cant see the wires unless you contort yourself into the glovebox. (crisco helps there)

Thx - I have a friend local who's in the mobile electronics biz. We were discussing spots for the control unit (I wanted it in the cupholder spot originally, but he felt it would be overly tedious in terms of Dremmeling) so we looked for a new spot. Believe it or not it's actual quite functional......now that I know where to feel for it I can record w/o a glance. I included the profile pic so you could see how much it extends, but due to the angle of the trim above it seems more flush IRL.
