Even the side by side stuff like the WRC does sometimes would make an awesome sport by itself.

one should not mix togeather stage rally and rally/autocross (according to FIA terms). I've been watching CORE lately, and i admit it's fun to watch, but stage rally is about something else. if x-games can come up, with a stage tv coverage similar to that, used in WRC for a few times - that is the right direction.

I wonder if DC Shoe's Ken Block had much to do with it. DC is involved in pretty much every X-Games sport.

To me it looks like this:
ESPN starts judging big air contests for mediocre MX racers and hits a home run with fans. Now Freestyle MX is more of a draw than MX racing outright.
ESPN sees a correlation of hardcore guys up north doing cool things with snowmobiles and puts them into the show. Bam....another home run as the sport of sled racing takes off. Obsoleting any other sled-derived dicipline (like hillcliming) and killing any chance of TV coverage. It's only a short time before we see freestyle sled competitions. We already have the freestyle MX folks doing their thing on snow anyway.
ESPN catches an episode of Motorsports Mundial and sees some Euro rallysprints and puts 2+2 together, except they label it as something that is brand new and markets it as something it isn't or worse...totally botch the coverage and bring bad consequences to the rest of the stage rally world trying to secure media coverage and grow the fan base.
I'll watch it to see how it turns out but am cautiously optimistic at most. Hopefully it will actually help bring attention to the sport of rally through more coverage of stage rally. I fear that it'll make a mockery of it which will hurt or kill the chances of getting more media coverage.

if you read the whole press release carefully you will see that it is a real rally with six special stages and one stadium super special over two days.
the powers that be are looking to fill the ranks with existing north american rally drivers. not first time celebrities that will provide spectacular carnage.
it should be a great showcase for real tally talent. might even include some 2wd guys.

Don't know why we haven't discussed this here - it's been hot topic on SS.
Anyway, selection criteria has been posted:
http://www.rally-america.com/story.php?article=96
In short, driver selections will be:
a) 2-4 "At Large" entries for high-profile drivers not recognized as Rally America Drivers
b) 6-8 Rally America entries picked by a 7 member selection committee
c) 2 Rally America qualifiers - highest finisher at STPR and Maine, not selected above
d) 2-4 Rally America 2wd drivers
Criteria are talent, commitment to the series, speed factors, and 2005/2006 podium finishes, and the likelihood that competitors will be series regulars in the future. The selection committee consists of JB Niday, Ben Bradley, John Buffum, Ken Block, Nathalie Richard, Dave Coleman, and Bill Wood.

I hope they do it right, Rally can use the exposure. I agree it is important to promote the correct version on rally. Those stadium super specials always play to packed houses everywhere else in the world, so why not here? X-Games would provide a perfect captive audience.

I am also curious about the "2-4 "At Large" entries for high-profile drivers not recognized as Rally America Drivers" but will try to wait and see who they just might be.
I hope this helps fuel this sport in North America beyond WRC now haveing a stop in Mexico... maybe making room for a US stop as well. And getting more youth out and getting into rallying to help education and experiance at younger ages like in Europe.
Best of luck to all those involved in this and I hope it goes off as a success.

Let's just hope it gets more people into it, both competitors and workers. That'll lessen entry fees, increase sponsorship, make for better cars and drivers which will make a better show. More workers make for a safe event. We ain't ready for WRC yet.
that is funny.
it'll be interesting to see the after effect, as unlike all the other x games sports, a 13 yr old kid can't partake in rally. it'll grow intrest in rally, but it won't explode the particapation #'s like we need for rally to grow, the costs, dedication, skills to get a car prepped to run are probably outside the range of most x games followers. you may buy a board or bike 'cuz tony hawk/dave mirra ride it, but are you going to plunk down 25k$ to buy a car that looks like what Pat Richard races? although a PR edition WRX would be the ultimate in Pro models :)
you better effin believe kids will want to do that, and thats all that counts. They will find the money somehow.
this is such great news im almost beside myself :D

a kid can go out and get his parents to buy a bicycle that looks like a x games motorcycle.
what would be really cool is a power wheels that looks like a rally car that i could go out and buy my 4 year old.

The following is the official selection criteria document for the X Games 12 Rally:
X Games 12, Rally America, Rally Event
........
II.
Invitees will receive no expense reimbursement, appearance fee or other compensation, other than the prize purse, from either ESPN or Rally America. The prize purse will be established by ESPN. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place Drive and Co-Driver will receive X Games medals. There will be no prize purse or medals for 2WD entries.
...........
I'm sure McRae is capable of generating sponsorship on his own, that would make the trip worth his while.

VTsportscar is preparing 12 cars for the event, or so I am told. Didn't have the chance to ask any questions. I hadn't heard that rally was coming to the xgames...so that was my big focus.
Wondering if they are going to set it up like the IROC events...identically prepared cars etc.
As I don't see why they would go to the trouble of preparing that many specificly for that event for just their own drivers. Although 12 doesn't seem like enough for the hole field with the above given numbers....(ok enough for them to start, but doesn't allow for mechanical failures during testing etc[ie a car gets wrecked or fails do to non competition or practice])

Exposure is good at almost any price. This should help make rally more popular by bringing it to a new audience. This could work in our favor. Don't be too synical yet.
