Steering wheel rattle

My car recently developed a rattle in the left steering wheel spoke. When turning the wheel counter clockwise about 110 degrees, there is a rattle that comes from inside the spoke. It happens when turning the opposite direction as well when the spoke begins to go upside down. I haven't taken the steering wheel apart because of concerns with damaging the air bag. The car has just over 5,000 miles, so if no one here has heard of this, I will probably take it to the dealer. However, I'm I'd like to fix it myself since the two times I've taken it to the dealer it comes back with a new problem related to the work they did. I appreciate suggestions anyone has.

I don't know about a rattle... but when my car had a few thousand miles on it, less than 3K i think, there was a grinding noise while doing the same thing. It turned out to just be a piece of styrofoam left over from shipping that had found its way to just the right spot and was rubbing on the back of the steering wheel as i turned it. I took off the little plastic piece (cover) on the bottom of the steering column and it fell right out.

for the lock rattle on glovebox,
i got some really strong glue and put a thin bead around the lock housing where it meets the plastic on the glovebox w/ out interfereing with the lock hole itself.

This use to have photos, but is still very helpful for the defroster panel rattle.

I have a 04 STI with 30,100 miles. The little ring on the shift nob that you can spin around rattles. It sort of clicks in place but not really tight so it still rattles a little. Should I just super glue it or does it need to be able to move around?
3. passenger Door rattle - this seems to be wiring rattleing against the inner door panel or the cover. Use some sticky foam and wrap wires..
Can someone answer...where does this rattle sound like it is coming from? I have a rattle in the front passenger door that sounds like it is coming under the controls of the door but possibly above and to the right of the speaker...it could be loose speaker equipment from the install of my MB quarts, but I was wondering if it could be this as well.
Has anyone had this and notice a larger volume of rattle when the bass is up? I don't notice anything with music turned off.

doubt it.. you decided to install a 12" aftermarket sub which causes the rattle that you're experiencing..

If you haven't performed any sound deadening, that's the first place to start. if you have performed sound deadening, you might need a little more. Or at least firm up the speaker baffle, door card and interior door panel. Also locate any resonant or rattling pieces and quiet them down.

For a speaker rattle, its a good idea to take care of the entire door, and not focus on a single rattle. This will help improve the speaker's performance, block out noise, and address the other rattles that will occur with higher levels of vibration (larger bumps in the road, bigger amp).
Check out what these guys have done. That should give you a good starting point. If you still prefer to do it piece meal, take off the door card and start tapping with your fingers in the area you heard the rattle. On any spot that rattles add some silcone caulk, sticky back felt, or sticky back foam. Use zip ties to tie up any loose wires. Look for any areas where there will be plastic to plastic contact and use one of items mentioned to add a cushioning layer.

thanks for the advice. I seemed to have fixed the problematic rattle. I used felt pads all around my crossover for my tweeter and zip tied wires.
now I just need to take care of the roof rattle caused by too much bass. maybe I'll drop my headliner and put deadening up there. not sure if that will help or not.

I have two noises I would really appreciate some help with.
The first is my tach/speedo seems to buzz during decel if I go above 4k rpm's. It is so bloody annoying. Sometimes I can hold the buzz if I hit the magic rpm, usually about 4200.
The second is my passenger door seems to vibrate to certain tones on the stereo, only certain tones though!
Both seem like harmonic vibrations but the first one is REALLY making me nuts. If a dealer replaces the speedo does it go on my title as unverified mileage? I have had them pull out and reinstall the darn thing, they couldn't find anyting wrong.
Thanks!

If the dealer replaces your speedo, they have to , by law, have the new speedo set to your exact current mileage. We have done it numerous times under warranty at my dealership...it happens more often that you think.
I found the "VIN plate rattle" It in fact does not have anything to do with the actual VIN plate. The rattle is coming from the vent pointed at the driver side window. The vent tube is an attachment to the main vent. The point where the smaller vent tube slides into the main vent was causing friction. Thats why when you push down on the VIN you are actually placing pressure indirectly onto the dash piece that holds the defogger vent and the rattle goes away

The Solution: Remove the defogger vent. Then wrap it with Adhesive-backed felt on the outer tube area. The felt was purchased at Wal-Mart for $.79 its in the crafts area. Re-install tube and presto!
Results: No rattle, well at least not that one anymore
Need help, massive rear deck rattle.
It sounds like the ENTIRE rear deck is slapping something when the bass hits. Not just some small plastic cover, but as if the whole rear fibreboard (or whatever it is) deck is hitting metal. I tried to alleviate this before, but it didn't help at all.

I have this same rattle, I slap the lower left corner of the airbag and it gets worse (is induced). I have taken out the glove box, upper vents and clock pod and cup holder to try and isolate it, no luck. It sometimes goes away if I run the heat through the vents for several minutes, perhaps this expanded some plastic and temporarily stops the rattle.
ANY OTHER SUGESTIONS??

Alright, it has to be the defroster vent clips. When I'm driving, I reach forward and tug on the defroster vent just in front of the passenger air bag and the rattle instantly goes away, let go, it comes back. I'll 'fix' these clips this weekend and report back. I'm certain this is it, it just sounded like it was coming from the area near ther air bag.

My mirror started rattling yesterday. Its one of the auto-dimming/homelink/compass models. I know the dealer will replace these under warranty. But since the rattle is so common in these mirrors, won't the rattle just come back? I'm thinking about just taking it apart and fixing it myself. before I do, can anyone who has had thier mirrors replaced confirm that the rattle DIDN'T come back?
| lndbrusr | 02-01-2007 01:18 PM |
I have found that the mirror rattle is where the wires connect into it on the back (towards the windshield). I sorta repositioned the wires and that put different pressure on the connector to mirror interface and that stopped the rattle.

When I got my '02 WRX, it came equipped with the autodim mirror (Donnelly brand). When that one went in the pooper due to the autodim feature malfunctioning, I purchased a new one from Subaru. Apparently, Subaru's got Gentex making them now. Anyways, the Donnelly one used to rattle when my music got loud (I've got two Bazookas in the trunk) and going over rough pavement. The Gentex one has been rattle free for about six months now :)

So was mine and some others who have reported squeaking from the seat. I don't know why tightening the bolts helped, but I suppose if the seat isn't secured/seated (no pund intended) properly, it may throw off the stresspoints of the cushion? It's just a guess; just saying for me that a couple of my bolts were loose and after tightening them, my squeaking went away :)

This stuff may have already been covered but I thought I would show what I did to get rid of ALL of my dash rattles.

I've got more squeaks than I can count. Guess I won't bother with most of them. :D
squeak comes from the seat itself...
I have a MY05 and my driver seat squeaks too. I can reproduce it every time and it isn't from being loose, it is inside the seat itself.

Im getting a loud tapping sound when i drive over bumps. Its coming from the passenger rear side. I rode in the back seat sounds like something plastic is tapping against metal or glass. I drove with the truck open and the sound is gone. Definitely coming from the trunk lid area close to the rear window. Anyone find this tapping? I've taken off the rear seat and cant find nothing!

You're not alone, posts 230, 231, 232, 233, 237, 238, 239, 250, 251 & 267
all seem to be talking about the really obnoxious tapping in back.....
I disassembled pretty much everything, took out the spare, the jack and
damn near everything and mine still made the tapping noise. I just stay off
the two freeways it does it on now
Oh and I replaced the left trunk hinge cuz it was already worn out......

No pics but if you follow this guide for removing at SCOOBYMODS>>>>http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1205
It is easy, just lift straight up and the clips release. Used silicone on both sides to silence these.. Check my post above for pics.

I had same tapping from behind, took it to dealership (full 100K miles warranty) - they've fixed it. It's a strut cover or somesuch. They say aside from the tapping noise there's abolutely nothing bad about it. So if you don't care (or can't hear it cuz you have no headers :) ) then ignore it.
