I should post pictures of mine, I'm actually putting on another 2-3 coats today, the 3 coats I did last time aren't 100% covering, only like 98% and it bothers me :P

does anyone know if they have a plasti-dip color that matches the oem pretty well, cause the guy that owned it before me got it all kinds of scratched up

comes in yellow, white, red, clear, blue as well as black.
I use it alot around my shop.
Another option, for people who dont want the rubberized feel,
is the Krylon Fusion for Plastic
Satin Black paint
I used it on the interior of my CRX and that paint dose not come off plastic,
i tried chiping it with my nail, I was impressed.
And it matched the OEM finish perfectly.

I spoke to someone at plasti-dip, and they said you can mix color into the white or clear plasti-dip's. I'm sure you could do it if you really wanted.

My dash is apart right now and I'm plasti-dipping. Pics to come.

This stuff is great to work with! I messed up pretty bad once and just rubbed all of it off the one piece. This was a great mod and it covered up all of the scratches in the trim pieces that I painted.

I did my HU, took me about 20 min to tape off, and I did like 5 light coats, but it worked perfectly. The silver on both my dash and on the HU were scratched and rubbed off, so I didn't think twice about hitting it with plastidip
After my old blazer, I swore up and down I would never paint my car with spray-paint again (interior that is), but this stuff has that rubbery compound, and is nothing like spray paint.
be careful you don't hit it with ArmorAll, it takes the rubbery feel away :(

Hmmm... I'm probably going to jump on this bandwagon. And, I think I'll try red Plasti-dip for the hazard button. Might be a small challenge to get the white triangles, but it's gotta be cheaper than buying a $25 button =)
UPDATE: I've decided to stick with the silver dash accents, but will do the hazard button, and make the A pillars and visors black.

Also, I pulled apart my hvac knobs and sprayed the part that turns with it, this was after my experience with the other pieces. Light grit sandpaper and a wash, then 4 coats of plasti-dip. It came out great, and it's pretty sweet having a rubberized grip feel on those knobs. The rest of the parts were sprayed with the textured paint for plastic, and the JDM s204 center buttons should be here sometime in the next month. I also stuck my new Clarion head unit in there, to give you a better idea of how it would look in the dash, but also just to show it off :D

Hey I have that same deck, but I just had to send mine in for service!:( one of the chips fried and it's going to cost me $85 to fix!

OK, I did my A pillars (black) and hazard button (red) this morning at 3AM. It is very cold outside!
Each has 3 coats on. I need to find a way to get the white triangle onto the hazard button... perhaps I'll drop by the local arts store. Still debating if I should dip the visors black-they're a bit more work.

This plasti dip stuff is crazy.
I re did my entire interior on my wagon...sprayed head liner and plasti dip every single pillar in the car.
Everywhere is holding up well except for my oh shiz handles. They've peeled beyond belief...I don't get why.

I tried it on door sill pieces, and it wore off with foot scuffing pretty quick. HVAC knobs seem to be holding up well though. I'm thinking a knob wouldn't last too long without a seriously rough sanding.

Update on my wear:
On the interior parts that I prepped only by washing, it has come off at least once. On the interior bit I sanded down to bare plastic, primed, and then coated, it's been rock solid with no problems. The hood, which received no prep work other than a wash, has proven immune to rock chip but not, strangely, to bugs. I took a big beetle of some kind to the front edge of the hood and it shredded the plastidip right off.

Nope, just the hood. Silver hood+dark blue car=football helmet. With a matte black hood, at least I only look like a ricer and I can peel it off and get it professionally painted since I did it in plasti-dip.

deffinately wanna try this for my interior, i've been debating on what to use for those damn tan pillars!
didn't read every post, so maybe i missed it, but has anyone tried this on a steering wheel? I saw that as an example on the plasti dip website, and my steering wheel is pretty well worn through in spots, just don't wanna ruin the rest of it if it doesn't work

^ I just did my light gray A pillars, and they turned out great. I think a steering wheel application will suffer from abrasion, unless you handle it like a baby -but if you are, why are you driving a Subaru? =P
If you'd like to trail blaze and try it on the steering wheel.. go for it. The good thing about Plasti-Dip is that provided it's used properly, you can peel it off later if you don't like it.
Good luck =)

LOL abrasion? dude, when i got the car the leather was totally worn through right around that 10-11 o'clock area of the wheel. it can't get much worse, and if it does, my second consideration was trying my hand at wrapping and hand stitching it, which would cover any mess i might make with this stuff :D
alright, i'll be considering it, but i'm leaving it for last

Anyone know how to pop out the 2 vent trim rings? I only need to do that and the shifter part yet, then i'll get pics up. They pop out with a flat head i'm assuming? I don't want to booger it up taking it out.....so far i did the top vent piece and the part around the head unit and it looks amazing. I sanded and primered it and gave it 6 coats lol. No chippign or scratching when i used my fingernail to test it.
| Kavik | 12-03-2008 11:38 AM |
i haven't done it, but in reading this, everyone seems to say a small flathead covered with electrical tape, and be gentle with the prying
| smurfwrx | 12-03-2008 11:45 AM |
yeah, those vent trim pieces pop right out. You probably even get at them with your fingers but a screwdriver with elec. tape as mentioned above will work if not.

just a thought, i wonder if a flat toothpick would work without risk of damaging plastic and having to fiddle with the tape? Or, my gf has these small wooden dowel rods that are cut at an angle on one end for her cuticles, or something manicure related, maybe something wooden like that is the safe way to go
