Now we need to find a place to get POR15 from. Anyone knows if HD or Lowes carry similar products?
it can be found at any sort of mom and pop parts store that generally caters to classic car customers. its main use is on truck/car frames during restorations.......and no, HD and lowes do not carry it i promise. it can be ordered offline as well.

i have never used it on any projects of my own so i have never ordered it. i really dont think it comes in different colors or finishes i may be wrong tho.
por15 will not permit rust to keep forming, but you cant just paint it over loose rust, it needs to be wire wheeled or sand blasted off first.

all these people trying to figure out the best way to prep their parts so it sticks.......why bother? its crap. i have painted PLENTY of stuff and have never even had a second thought of useing plastidip. if i want texture i simply hold the can of spray paint a good 1 to 2 feet away on the last coat and give it a few spurts. looks great but not to textured to where you cant even clean it lol.

Because you don't prep it right.
If you take time to prep by: sanding, fine sanding, using adhesion promotor and/or primer, then it will last a long time.
I only paint interior pieces, using it for exterior is just silly when you can use high grade automotive paint.
So far my door cards and center console have held up for almost a year.

I know that proper prep work is necessary, but it still doesn't make the stuff anywhere near durable. I guarantee that if I ran my fingernails across your door panel or scuffed it with my foot, the Plasti-Dip would scrape away. It's a good quick fix if you want to change the color of parts or don't have the cash to have it done professionally, but I think a lot of people get the impression that it is great to use any/everywhere.

Yep, this stuff is durable, but not that durable. It's great for interior only.
I found it silly I've read in this thread people wanted to:
-Paint their wheels
-Paint their entire car
-Paint the undercoating
This stuff won't stick at all properly without prep; imagine painting the undercoating, it would require weeks of prep work to make the work pay off.

^^^wow. I did my front lip with that stuff and one small scrape caused it to slowly peel away with time. The small scrape caused an opening which slowly got bigger and bigger until I just peeled the rest off.
That is one cool thing about it. If you dont like it, peel it right off.

Depending on how its applied it can be different textures as well.....
-Smooth
apply heavy untill its almost ready to run
-Matt
apply the same as Smooth and a test piece. Apply again when the test piece is set to tacky from a 18-24" distance until you see the texture build up. If you apply too much ( an area will go shiny/smooth ) shoot until smooth and try again......In my experience this is by far the hardest to do ,because you have to get the dry time just rite for the 2nd spray to bite in and flow ever so slightly
-Textured

i finally did that ugly silver in my dash with this stuff and i love the way it turned out. only pain in the A$$ was that i took the ash tray cigarette lighter door off and it was a pain to get the spring back in. but other than that it turned out awesome all i did was washed all the parts with dish soap and then sprayed them with about 4-5 coats. turned out awesome

plasti dip blows, i used duplicolor vinyl and fabric spray on the headliner and all the pillars and everything thats the same texture as the pillars 2-4 coats and ur good. dry to the touch in about 10 mins put the pillars back in and nothing scraped off like plasti dip, and no prep work was needed. oh and it worked great on the OS handles as well

Okay, so I've read a lot of the plasti-dip threads, but I ahven't found an answer to this question; How well does plasti-dip hold up to high heat conditions?
On my 09 OBS there is a "underguard" on my rear bumper that is currently silver, but I think would look good plasti-dipped (along with the front "underguard" as well). Any thoughts on how well it will hold up to the heat from the tailpipe where it passes through the bumper? If it's just going to melt, discolor, and/or burn, I'll probably skip it.
I suppose I could rhinoliner it instead if that hold up to heat better.

RhinoLine it! I Plasti Dipped my A B and C pillars and they have been holding up great. But i used some good ol' Rustoleum on my dash/darth vader lookin vent trim (HVAC as some people round these here parts call it). You can't go wrong using Plasti Dip on low low touch traffic pieces. It can kinda come off like shrink wrap if you rub it pretty firm.
Some say that hillbillies have been known to Rhino Line their whole vehicle under the cover of darkness deep in the back woods of Appalachia and none have reported a scratch let alone heat wear of any sort.

hey quick question and i basically read through the entire thread because i have tried a few times already but
my question is what does everyone set it one while spraying. the shifter trim piece, that hold the ashtray as well, i cant get the plasti dip to remain even while it dries.
the curved part of the piece always ends up with a big glob along one edge (which ever edge its leaning toward when drying)
ive been spraying from about 10-12 inches and trying to do it as light as possiable but for it to be coated i feel it has to be applied pretty thick or is it just me?
i dont have a lot of spray paint experience so any tips on how to get an even coat would awesome!
thanks! Merry Christmas!

You need to spray thin coats (as you are doing) and/or sand it to make it stick better. A textured surface allows the coating to adhere better as opposed to the glossy smooth trim.
A thin coat will set the surface and will allow you to spray thicker coats later on.
A thick coat on a bare surface will run and gravity will be a factor in your job.

I spray it, dry for 30-60 min, repeat once or twice depending on how it lays, dry for an hour or so, and go around the emblem with a toothpick to break the seal. The most important part to remember about the whole thing is PATIENCE! If you F it up, you have to start all over again. :)

Sheepdog, was the thread that mentioned it ME looking where to purchase it? If so, what an awesome 34 pages of info from it and if not, it's still awesome! I am super stoked, I have all my a, b and c pillars, roof lights, outer covers to the seat belts, flippy mirror thing all drying in plasti-dip. I have my roof out, awaiting new black suede, and I am going tomorrow to pick up a rear passenger side door, that matches my cars color, and will replace the only major dent in the car!!!!! I hope by next weekend I can start on finishing up my new amp racks, start on my next fiber glass enclosure, and somewhere along the line, learn to fill some simple dents on my roof so I can wrap it in dinoc cf. Then, at that point, she will be better than the day I bought her. Just did new spark plugs and replaced a bad coil pack ( thanks lavid2002, checks in the mail) and she's running like a top! I am pretty stoked. This thread is awesome.

Nice--I've been deciding how I'm going to be getting rid of my chrome strip and actually thought about using the plastidip.

there's a nice write up on 3gwrx about removing the strip. pretty sweet for 5 bucks, used about 5 coats of spray

Also plastidipped my center console about 2 years ago and have not had to re-spray it 1 time since then.

Not a Subaru, but I helped Plasti Dip my brother's MS3 wheels. They turned out great. Hope it lasts.

I did my grill and my rear chrome piece and then sprayed them with a matte clear and it has held up for 2+ years. I just sprayed me underlip spoiler (after a kiss with a crub) but have to spray it again when it gets warmer out, so i can hit it with the matte clear.

There's a plastidip matte clear? They need a gloss. Lol
