The home depot here does.

in the middle of mine now...
notes:
light coats make it look FURRY almost, unless you are careful and persistent with the coats
too wet, and it dries smooth/lumpy/pitted
The good thing is if you don't like it it peels off, and you can start fresh.

Did you sand it too much? The "Furry" appearance is what happened when I used to rough a grit. in terms of the pits, they disappear with a few more coats.
| scottjua | 05-03-2007 11:17 PM |
Actually I think it was part because I was a bit too far away, but in the end, I kept the texture, and it dried like a crinkle texture almost like a rubberized powder coat a la the red crinkle paint on the STi manifold... weird, but I like it.
I actually did everything twice... I didn't like the first version as the can starting dumping drips and there were some gobs, and uneven areas that I didn't like. So off it all came in a few strips. This stuff is cool, as you can make it look a few different ways depending on how you apply it apparently, and if you don't like it...just peel it off.
I didn't sand or prep the surface any way other than wiping down the stock STi trim pieces.
I'll get some decent pics in the daylight, and some macro shots as well.

Is there an easy way to paint the dash without taking it out?
| sheepdog | 05-04-2007 12:03 PM |
I wouldn't even try it. The potential for overspray and the amount of masking you would have to do would take so much time it wouldn't be worth it, and it wouldn't turn out as good. Pulling the dash cover isn't that hard.
| stripperluva | 05-05-2007 12:19 AM |
Ok I did all of my trim with the plasti-coat.
It looks great but is a dust magnet on all pieces.
So....I took the advice of one of the local antique car restoration people (evidently the plasti-coat/spray vinyl is a good trick) and coated the plasti-coat with SEM Classic Coat -low gloss black. This is a flexible paint for vinyl, leather, and plastic resotrations.
HOLY CRAP!!!! It looks exactly the same but as the plastic-coat absorbs the Classic Coat and then dries to be tuff as sch*tt.........still flexible..........not tacky......and a bit smoother.
I am VERY VERY happy with this combination and now it is even tuffer than it was with Plati-Coat alone.
Take my experience for what ever it is worth but this porved a great combo for me.

Looks great, the consistency of your finish is OEM like!
| ATK | 05-07-2007 04:48 PM |
I really love the look of it and even considered spraying some pieces like that but then I thought about how tough it might be cleaning if something got on it or wiping dust off of it. Let us know how it goes.
| scottjua | 05-07-2007 08:26 PM |
lint from microfiber cloths seems to catch easily, but so far its been really durable... especially after curing. That said, I've found so far to get lint off, you can just rub it with a moistened finger (water) and lint clings to your finger instead of the rubber.
I'll know more as dust builds over the weeks and report back, but so far, its no worse than keeping the alcantara clean.

It looks good but im worried about the lint and dust as well. I think Im just going to go buy flat black paint and do a couple of coats of that first. If it doesnt work out then i have the plasti dip ready.
| sheepdog | 05-08-2007 03:29 AM |
seriously, I used armorall natural finish (meant to not attract dust) and wiped it down and it worked just fine. I'm not sure about if you get the finish scottjua got.
| scottjua | 05-08-2007 03:47 AM |
The best thing about plasti-dip is the ability to peel it off and have a perfect OEM piece underneath. Paint would be much harder to do this I would imagine.

that plasti-dip stuff really does rock....but plasti-dip boogers don't...i gotta wear a mask next time..

Hey guys, so I got to lookin' under my hood last night and I have been trying to clean everything up. I don't like the super bright yellow caps all over the place (but I know the point is so you can find them easier). So I'm testing out how this stuff works under the hood. I'm not sure what it will do so I will keep you posted. I sprayed the coolant cap, washer bottle cap, dip stick, and oil cap. I really want to do the other caps and that little clamp that holds the hood stick (can't think of what its called).

I pulled the whole insert off and wrapped the fabric around the edges, sticking it to the back side. It's one layer of fleece for padding, and a layer of micro suede for the texture. If you're interested in doing it, search for a How-To thread I made in this section of the forum.
If anyone has an OEM grey set they'd like to trade, I'll gladly consider...
ATK - That looks pretty damn good. I'll have to give that a shot, as some of the Fuzion paint cracked off where the plastic has flexed on certain caps.

i'm looking at the 02-04s and i can't tell if i like it or not. i think its because of the picture quality. lighting and flash marks usually ruin the picture. i don't know how the pieces would turn out as well in texture.

you may be able to find it in Red or yellow. Typically most stores that carry it just carry black
| SwisSlesS | 06-07-2007 04:14 AM |
I've been thinking about this stuff but the possibility of dust attraction and complications with cleaning have somewhat deterred me. This got me thinking, how would clear coat over the top work? Make it easier to clean and keep essentially the same look? Presumably it would still be relatively easy to remove, since the plasti-dip is the base coat. What do you guys think?
