just wanted to say, I did this right after this post opened...1 year later, this stuff looks great in the car, no fade, no peeling...looks like it came with the car....this is one mod I don't regret doing one bit.....there are times I thought the car came this way.

I used 2 cans to undercoat my car.
| t3hWIT | 01-08-2008 08:51 PM |
I have had some issues.
1. The C pillar trim for seems to haze over with a whitish film, so ever once and a while I have to go over it with the Meguiars trim.
2. I sprayed my dashboard too fast, and I still have issues cleaning dust off it because it has a textured finish.
3. Also, the lower B pillar and kick panels are nicked up pretty good from the seat belts and my feet.
Despite these "problems," I'm satisfied with it, and it will hold me over until I can get the OEM grey interior to replace it.

I sprayed the bottom of my cupholders. Soda cans dont chew the plastic up anymore. I did this 8 months ago and still holding strong. cleans up easy too.

| sheepdog | 01-15-2008 02:45 PM |
From when I first started this thread, all the plasti-dip has held up great, except the door sills. They are starting to wear off a good bit actually, but those are such a high traffic area I'll have to figure out a new solution, or figure something out to make this stuff stick even better.

That's what I would like to know and also if so how did you tape it off?
Also are the results of Plasti-Dip the same color of the STi Limited Interior?
To avoid hassle I may just buy the STi Limitired Interior.

I want to do my entire tan entire in this stuff I think and possible fabric paint the door cards and package tray. Seems pretty straight forward but what about the air vents. For those of you that did the entire dash did you get new black airvents or spray them and if so did you use the plasti dip stuff or regular paint?
Thanks
Thanks

I got tired of my ugly rusty grills in front as well as my extremely messed up seibon cf hoodscoop and painted them with the black plasti-dip. Layed it on thick with about 5 - 7 coats for the extra durability and that flat-black look. $10 for 2 cans at Lowe's and I love it. My hoodscoop looks like a part from a tank or a stealth bomber... I want to plasti-dip my entire world...

Didn't tape ANYTHING off, just removed and took apart all the pieces, makes it a lot easier. I wouldn't ever buy the limited interior with as easy and effective this method is.

no odor at all, this isn't 'paint' in the normal sense, it's literally a rubberized coating. before it sets, you can peel it off, but once it sets it stays on pretty darn good, few times I scraped the console with what I thought would have damaged the plastidip, and surely would have scraped off regular spray paint, and it went unharmed.

OK, I'm about to do mine, finally. How do I get the silver rings around the ball vents out? How do I get the top section of the center console out (the bit around the two central vents on an 05)? How do I get the shift boot off the bottom piece of the center console?
Everything else I want to paint I've removed before, so other than those three issues, I'm good to go.

Bump for that answer because I want to know!
| inkpreza | 01-25-2008 12:47 AM |
the vent rings are a beeeatch but they are held in place on the lft and rt,i used a screwdriver to pry em off. the shifter boot has a ring that clips on from underneath, flip it over and pop it off with screwdriver. when prying off vent rings find somthing flat to put between dash and driver to avoid damage to dash. the top section of center console has 3 screws upsidedown under the vents, then pop out similar to the piece under it.if you have any other ?'s let me know
| sheepdog | 01-25-2008 03:33 PM |
Yea, the center section comes apart kind of in sequence starting with the shifter trim/ashtray piece, then the head unit/hvac surround, then the upper section with the upside down screws.
The rings, wrap a flat tip in electrical tape and carefully pop them out.
As for durability, my wiper arms are plasti-dipped and have been for like a year, have held up great through 2 Colorado winters.

As others have said, wait the full 30 :) I did the whole process twice after getting impatient. Used about five coats on the center console interior. As noted elsewhere in the thread you can get a different finish depending on how you spray, too. Spray lighter and further to get a more prominent texture, or heavier and closer to get a smoother one.

I just came in from spraying coat 4. First coat, I sprayed too close and was getting a lumpy gloss finish. Second coat I backed up and it started to look better. Third coat, something went wonky with the can and it was spitting little droplets instead of a spray, but thankfully it leveled out as it dried. Fourth coat seemed to go on ok, it's drying now. I've got about 20 minutes until I go hit it again for a fifth coat. I'm not 100% sure there's enough left in the can though.
How long do I need to wait before I re-install? It's in a sun porch being held at 75F with a heater right now. I'd like to put it back on the car for a meet tonight, but that would only be about 90 minutes after the last coat. At which point it would be in a car at about 20F, probably dropping into the single digits overnight. Do I need to let it cure overnight, or can I go ahead and install the parts if I'm careful?

i let all my stuff dry for 3 hrs in a heated garage, about 67 deg. i think you can get away with less but i don't think 90 mins then ultra low temps is ideal but you can give it a shot

Hmm...
Well, 5th coat just sprayed. I've got 100 minutes before I need to leave in the car. Unless someone knows this stuff cures at lower temps (but just takes longer), looks like I'm going to the meet without an interior.
I'll just tell them I'm such a hardcore racer that it's for weight loss

Obviosly too late, but my take is that it's WELL worth going without interior for 2 days to let this cure properly.

dipped Wheels?

This may seem random, but has anyone Plasti-dipped their wheels? It seems like if done right, it could make a nice flat/semi-gloss finish, but be more durable than spray paint... For those of you who have used the stuff, would it look decent on a set of wheels, for that blacked out look?

Since this stuff will allegedly peel off if you change your mind, I wanted to leave the surface below as virgin as possible. So no sanding or primer. I washed the parts with Dawn to remove any grease or oil. I had planned to wipe them down with alcohol just before painting, but I couldn't find the bottle I thought I had. This is 5 coats sprayed 30 minutes apart at 70-75* Fahrenheit. To get the texture I was looking for, I ended up trying to hold the can a little more than a foot away from the pieces.
The coating is incredibly hard. I accidentally scraped one of the pieces against the sharp threaded top of the shifter and it didn't mar the finish at all. However, if you rub your finger across this, you'll leave a slightly light color smudge that will only come off with water. It's pretty strange.
It's amazing how much better this ties together the center console. It matches the hazard button and shift boot better than stock! I'm not sure why Subaru didn't ship the car with a black center console to begin with.

1) The finish is already flat
2) Plasti Dip makes a clear coat but it's glossy
3) Plasti Dip is not a paint in the traditional sense, just shooting clear onto it might have ugly results, contact them to ask

Alright, so I'll be the one to take this too far...
I have a WRX hood I've been waiting to get painted to match my RS (hood is CGM, car is RBP). I've had the hood for almost a year now and still can't afford to have it painted. What do you guys think of plasti-dipping the hood to make it flat krinkle black for now and then peeling the plasti-dip off in the future when I can actually afford to have it painted?

I think it would be a pita to remove. If anything paint it flat black primer until you can have it painted. It shouldnt cost much more then $200 to paint a hood I would opt to not put it on until you paint it.

What do you guys think of plasti-dipping the hood to make it flat krinkle black for now and then peeling the plasti-dip off in the future when I can actually afford to have it painted?
dood, buy buy a quart of paint, then bring your hood and the paint to your local Technical highschool. Mine charges $7.50 an hour for labor.... whole hood painted will be less than $150.
That light coating is your skin cells sloughing off, along with your natural grease and oils from your finger.

does anyone have a link to how to take off the upper ac vents for this? Or will I know once I get the rest out. Ive had most of my center console apart, but not the part where the radio/ ac vents are.

I asked the same question about 5 posts up and got an answer. There's three screws along the bottom. The only confusing part is that the hazard button pops out the FRONT of the trim piece, not the back like everything else.

I just finished my console. I did the knobs and the ring around the knobs as well. It turned out great. Here are a couple pics. Terrible camera phone quality...but they look great and are slightly textured.
Now I just need to get rid of the horrible stock deck.

update on my plasti dip experience,
i did not do any prepwork except for wiping everything down with rubbing alcohol prior to spraying.
i wish i wouldve sanded before i started haha i went to put in my jdm red hazard button today and pulled out the center piece and barely scraped the bottom of the ac top piece and the base is exposed now :furious: the plus side is that it does peel off if you make a mistake like i did.
so my project tomorrow is going to be re-doing the pieces but this time wet snading off the base so the plasti-dip adheres better

How do you get the adjustment rings off of the HVAC controls? They pop up a quarter inch but thats it.. it feels like I'm going to break them. :\
