plasti-dip part 16

lordhumongous 09-13-2012 02:55 PM

BTW sorry about the link but can't seem to embed images... Technical difficulties trying to do this from my phone!

Some very creative uses in this thread, keep up the good posts.
Just did my grille surrounds. I think it makes the car look more aggressive from the front. What do you guys think?/7982742129"]http:[emailprotected]/7982742129
Looks good with the lip. Did you plasti dip the lip too? Hard to tell in the pic. I'm going to show this to my buddy who has the same color car. I keep trying to convince him to do something with the grill.

I plasti dipped my wheels about a year ago and they have held up really well except where I scratched it torquing wheels.
lordhumongous 09-14-2012 07:03 AM

No the lip came that way
jm02466 09-14-2012 01:19 PM
No the lip came that way
Have you considered dipping the lip too? Might look good. I think it would bother me if the lip and grill were two different colors of black. Not my car though, just throwing it out there.
lordhumongous 09-14-2012 04:57 PM

The only issue would be that the lip is a flexible plastic and the plasti dip would look like crap within two weeks because of road debris, rocks and any loose gravel that I am lucky enough to find. The dip matches the grille so it looks ok.
jm02466 09-14-2012 11:57 PM

Fair enough. Looks good either way.
Trudd84 09-15-2012 10:26 AM

I have some videos off my phone of som eplasti dip removal off of an STi hood scoop. Photobucket is being a douche with uploading it. Can I email it to someone and you upload it and throw it in here for people to understand more about removal? pm me me email address if you don't mind helping me out.
Trudd84 09-15-2012 01:25 PM

Well, I am a firm believer in plasti dip depending on it's application. I have done an "Audi" mask, the area around the license plate, and most recently this STi scoop. I did it while I was waiting on my Grimmspeed WRB paint, which I am on day 3 of working my way to a proper paint job on it. None the less, I wanted everyone to see, especially people unfamiliar with this product, just how user friendly it is and how easy the removal process is. Now, I used 3/4 of a can on the scoop itself so it was thick coats and probably 4-6 coats. I have learned that thicker is better, just do it in layers and have patience. None the less here are the videos. Hope this helps someone!

I've literally been looking at this for ten minutes, trying to figure out if I like the blacked middle section. Can't say I do.

I love it. It reminds me of the audi/Evo fronts

I'm running the same painted lower bumper setup, except mine ends at where the towhook cover line is.
DKDunn04 09-17-2012 11:56 AM

Entire car. Used 3 gallons through the Wagner gun, and will put on at least one more. Its only been on 2 weeks, but its holding up great. No chips in it, and all the bird crap and pollen has washed right off.

And running into cones at 60mph didnt leave a mark! Maybe because they are the same color....
Trudd84 09-17-2012 06:58 PM

Lol, looks great actually. If you watch my vids in my post above this a few up, the more layers the better! Good job!

rynzilla 09-20-2012 12:05 AM

Wow thats an amazing color, also it looks very clean. Do you do this professionally?? I'm planning to have my car dipped, I would really like a new look

Nice! That's bad ass man. Let us know how it holds up. Does it pose a risk to your factory paint if/when removed?
DKDunn04 09-20-2012 07:38 AM

I dont do it professionally, just took my time. When you take it off, I have found that the paint under it actually looks better than it did before. Its like a stick on clay bar!
Trudd84 09-20-2012 10:28 AM

There are also two videos a few pages back that I posted of removal, and the paint actually looks cleaner than before. Its all about an even thick build-up so you can actually peel it off!
jesseber 09-20-2012 11:01 AM

Wow. That's tempting..

Did you use anything to thin the Plastidip before applying it?

-Beach
DKDunn04 09-22-2012 08:21 AM

I used the pre-thinned gallons from dipyourcar.com. Next time I will buy the dip myself and thin it. Most people use a 1:1 ratio.

Hmmmm... I wonder what they thin it with and whether or not it has long term affects on the paint. I've seen a couple places where people say that it has made their paint somewhat hazy, with the clearcoat ending up not as "clear" as before? IDK just curious

My project for the past weekend. Did the stock '06 rims and the grill surround. Painted the calipers while I had the wheels of. Great cheap way to make your car look good. Love this stuff!!

You painted your calipers with plasti-dip?

Do you have any idea how hot those bad boys get? Calipers require high temp materials.
bugeye_ry_RI 09-25-2012 09:50 PM

My buddies using this stuff to paint his car, i don't know how I feel about it but it seems pretty legit

Nah. I got some caliper paint for them. Just did it since I had the wheels off
IceWilly 09-28-2012 01:07 PM

Can you guys chime in on how this matches the oem dash in a 05 sti? (black)

I want coat my gauge pod with it, but it has a good bit of crevices that are hard to dust off. Does dust stick to the plasti dip pretty good?

This is actually the same color as mine (and the same gauge pod actually).

It's def not a bad match, but i think the difference is the kicker. Is there a somewhat glossier finish that might match better?
myrt1987 09-28-2012 01:41 PM

If you spray close to the surface the layers will come out more glossy. normally dust sticks pretty good to it. can probably clean it with a brush tho. if you dont like it you can peel it off.

Just ordered a wheel kit from dipyourcar.com

Does anyone have experience with their shipping? How long does it usually take? I'm trying to get my wheels dipped before winter mode.

I'm thinking about dipping my front lip white, but I've read time and again about how the white gets filthy. Anyone try a clear layer on top of the dip to help with clean-up and dirt resistance?

I've read about this matte clear, but I haven't seen it.
Freemanwrx 10-15-2012 11:58 PM

Loving the plasti dip!
goob_os101 10-17-2012 03:34 PM

I dipped the chrome grills and bottom of the bumper.

Can't remember if I posted mine up or not. Did my car a while back.

And did a tutorial on the process:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=h4NUjVh3zTA

It was a fun project. So far it's been about 2,000 miles and two months. I've been on the highway with it quite a bit, and I've scrubbed the hell out of it in the car wash, and it still looks new. Definitely a good investment if you just want to clean up the look of your car (which I obviously had to).

You can clear it. But be warned, its gna be a PIA to remove it.

Anyone have an example of wheels painted with the gold metalizer? I saw one example, but it wasn't very good. I am looking for something that is similar to the gold bbs look.

I'm planning on doing my trim on my 04 today.

I'm thinking sand with 2000 or so, clean, then primer and paint? Or with Plasti-dip do I not need a primer?

Also, should I go with Plasti-dip or Dupli Color Vinyl & Fabric?

I don't want it to stray too far from door panel trim colors.
chet24 10-20-2012 06:52 PM

I think the point if plasti dip is that you don't need to prime, sand, or anything like that so it is removable. If you are going to do all that, you might as well pick a better quality paint. But vinyl is another good non-permanent option.
WRXGOBerserk 10-21-2012 09:27 PM

Just finished some of my trim. 4 coats, 35 minutes in between coats. Am I not getting a good cover on it? It's more textured than I'd like. More coats? Hold the can closer? I'm spraying from 8-12" away.

I'd like it to come out a little more glossier than this. Can I adjust and do another 1-2 coats to get that or should I start over?

When I did my old stock wheels a long time ago, the first time I tried it came out too textured. I was spraying from about 12" so I re-sprayed from a bit closer and it came out much better. I read that if you spray from too far away, it partially dries before it has time to form a layer, enough to where it is very rough looking.
