gs300cky 12-13-2012 02:38 PM

Wow I didn't make any sense at all.
I bought a paint gun and 5gallons for $300

I painted my whole car using 4 gallons of flat black (I did 5 coats that way it's easier to peel off)

Then I messed it up on the final coat so I ripped it all off (it took less then 2 hours to rip every inch of it all off)

Right, it looks good, but you will not even be able to see light through it at all with 5 coats on it. I remember when I painted mine, I left it over my brights, you couldn't see ANYTHING haha.

Question for all you plasti-dippin' experts:

I just did my first project with PD and after 4 light to medium coats, with 25 min between each coat, the final finish isn't what I was expecting. I've got complete coverage, but the finish has that orange peel sort of texture to it. its not totally smooth like I was expecting. Is this normal? I've never seen anything PD'd in person.
gs300cky 12-15-2012 03:08 AM

Post a picture of your finish. And I know the first time I did it, the metal of the car was to hot so it looked like rhino liner and was really rough.
I just peeled it all off and redid it. Now it's 100% soft feeling without the bumps. I will do a close up of mine so u can see it.
tuxtattoo 12-15-2012 03:58 AM

If you get too far away while spraying you'll get the "orange peel" texture with your PD. I had that happen by following the distance the can recommended. I've had much better luck spraying ~4-6" away.

Try to spray closer and get medium to thick coats. Just keep trying and be sure to spray enough or else it will never come off.
Shohin 12-15-2012 06:19 PM

I think the issue was I followed the directions!

Without removing the 4 coats I already did, I added one more thicker coat that was sprayed on from about 6" away. It looks better and more even for sure. Not sure if I'll re-do what I've done or not. I'm sure from more than 2' away it looks black.

It was my exhaust finishers that I dipped. Took them off the car to do it, so its not like a big hassle. I'll post a pic when its done. I suppose to orange peel texture does makes it look OEM though.
Anyone try th clear color? I'd like to spray my front bumper for road debris protection.
I haven't yet, but I'm about to. I know others have done it and had good success with it. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than the 3M clear bra stuff.

The only differences that I can tell is the clear dip will leave more of a "satin" finish as opposed to a shiner one. I think it's sexy though.
tenaciousZ 01-22-2013 11:39 PM

Haven't read any mention of people using the pre-dip spray offered at dipyourcar.com for any members PD projects ... Has anyone actually used it or has dawn and/or an alcohol wipedown done the trick for u guys? Thanks..
Alex15 01-23-2013 12:10 AM

I just put on plasti dip blaze yellow on my wheels. it seemed like a totally different texture. I wonder how well it will hold up and how hard it will be to keep clean?
tuxtattoo 01-23-2013 12:23 AM

I've actually just recently used the pre-dip spray for the first time about a week ago. Normally, I just used alcohol to wipe stuff down.

I'll have to say that I was pretty skeptical of the pre-dip spray, but it really did seem to do a good job getting some really caked on brake dust off of wheels. I sprayed it on fairly generously and let it sit for a couple of minutes and the dust really started to dissolve and break up.

Then I wiped it off with a towel. I think that if I would have had a toothbrush, the process would have been even faster.

It doesn't seem like snake oil upon first impression. I remember how long my first set of wheels took to clean with alcohol and these wheels were way worse, but I was done way faster.

I'll be dipping a whole car using it coming up soon. We'll see how it does there.

What kind of texture were you getting? Were you using a rattle can or the pre-thinned dip?

Also, how close were you and how cold was the dip?

Yeah. It could only be a satin finish for sure but that wouldnt bother me at all. WAY cheaper than 3M and possibly just as good depending on how many coats you put on. Ordering today since home depot doesnt carry the clear.

Plasti-dipped my wheels last night. I put about 5 or 6 coats on them and it covered up everything beautifully.

I love how the armor all stuff is just re branded plasti dip for 3 times the cost. Look at the number designators on the bottom of both cans, they are exactly the same.

Can someone explain what I did wrong?

I started with one coat, it started to look nice and smooth

I let it dry for 30-40 minutes and decided to give it another coat, and it came out like this

it's not smooth now, and feels like the dash, uneven...

1. what did I do wrong?
2. how can I fix this now?
BSP671 04-24-2013 06:11 AM

Was that only two coats? You could try spraying some more light coats (2 or 3 more) and let the dip re-cure itself. You could also peel it off and try again with 3-4 coats. I use a heat gun to let it dry in between coats so its a lot faster to dip. Maybe 5 about minutes cuz I'm impatient lol
Hyper 04-24-2013 07:07 AM

yeah, 2 coats
I am afraid it well get worse with more :p

Make sure the tips are nice and clean, and make sure the cans are warm and shaken well (this makes a huuuuge difference).

The good thing about PlastiDip is that it reliquifies when you add more on top. So you can just keep adding layer without a problem. Try the steps i suggested right over the top of your old layers.
what is the best brand or place to get plastidip?
Walmart carries black and white for 7 bucks
tuxtattoo 04-24-2013 03:55 PM

I found that Lowe's and Home Depot had the cans the cheapest in my area ~$6 a can (for black).

Personally, I'd just peel it off and start again. If the first picture is what you got with your first coat, that's part of your problem. The first coat is WAY too thick.

Also, not knowing the weather conditions you were dipping in (was it cold/super humid?), could have impacted the drying as well. 30-45 minutes is also a really long time to wait between coats. If you were following anything the back of the can said, ignore it.

As others stated, keeping the cans nice and warm and shaken up really helps with a nice even mist.

My method is typically as follows:

Make sure the piece is clean and dry. Rubbing alchohol works great most of the time.
Get one of the [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-241526-Comfort-Grip/dp/B0015RJ41I/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1366832593&sr=8-5&keywords=Rustoleum+spray+paint+grip"]Rustoleum pistol grip[/ame]. Lowes/Home Depot also have them. [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Rust-oleum-243546-Spray-Grip-Handle/dp/B000DZFE44/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366832593&sr=8-1&keywords=Rustoleum+spray+paint+grip"]This one[/ame] is not the one you want.
Place the item up high enough so you can get side/upward angle for the edges. At least knee high should be enough.
Shake the can really well (and make sure it's at least room temp. I like to sit the cans in a bucket or sink of hot water before hand (especially on cold days). If it's cold, toss 'em back in between coat.
When spraying, keep the can around 4-5" away. Do not follow the directions on the can or you'll have an textured orange peel effect.
Test your spray on cardboard to make sure it's even and not splattering and blobbing.
Spray a nice even coat keeping your wrist locked. Pay attention to your stroke and see if you are pulling up or down at the end of your stroke. Up puts you at risk for orange peel texture. Down you risk thick blobs and bubbles, etc. You always want to keep the can at the same distance through the stroke.
Don't stop your stroke in the middle of your item, you'll notice a thicker vertical blob when you do.
For your first coat you want a nice ~50% coverage. You don't want to thick or you'll end up with an uneven finish (as you've seen).
I typically wait 10-15 minutes between coats unless it's cold and I can't bring it indoors.
When possible, move the items inside to dry if you are outside. Wind, bugs, grass, will always pick up and blow crap on your drying dip (at least for me it does). Or your neighbor will decide he absolutely must mow his monkey humping grass 5' from where you are working.
Shake the can really well between coats. I like to give it a good 10 second shake every 60 seconds or so. Test your spray pattern again before jumping back in.
Apply the second coat about like the first coat. Thin and even. You'll proabably be ~75% transparency.
Third coat, I go a little heavier, but not overdoing it.
4th coat, I usually do a bit heavier than the 3rd. This is usually plenty for most applications to provide a nice smooth and durable finish.
5th coat+ if your item will be subject to heavier abuse (grills, wheels, etc).
I hope this helps.
